Casio owners gathering hahah. Mine cost me about 10€ and I've had it for years, working at a powerplant, I've subjected it to diesel, petrol, sludge, dirt, ocean water, scraping, bumps, and it still works like a charm. The bracelet finally snapped and that's why I'm here. Thank you for your video :)
Thanks! I had to push a lot harder than you did. I was about to take a fine pin punch and hammer to it, but paper clip held in pliers finally worked. This F 91W is remarkably accurate, about one second fast per month!
Thanks, David. My strap broke and I was puzzling over how to push the pins through, not realizing that they're solid, they don't compress. I've done it your way, and now I have a new band on my watch. Thanks again.
God bless you David!! After 2 years the band was tearing and I used day glo green gaff tape to keep it together 😂kinda like the nose tape on glasses. I knew the arrows on the band meant something I used a push pin but not pliers . Thanks for the tip now I can put a band on my favorite watch I 1:161:16 bought on clearance!! Stay blessed🙏🏽
Thank you so much! I am wearing a w91 since at least 15 years and before that in school. Most of the times when the wristband broke I bought a new one but kept the old ones in my drawer. One is already on my wrist again. Another one will be repaired later. So helpful! You made my day, thanks again!
Awesome. I would never have noticed the arrow. Or noted that the pin is actually tapered. Or thought to use pliers as leverage on the paperclip. Thank you. This made a seemingly impossible task super simple. Thank you!
Thank you for this! I had a legitimate Casio for Christmas and the strap broke! I bought a new one and it was a fake and I was gutted! But I decided to swap the fake watch’s strap with my real one with the help of your video!
Many thanks for this - just followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. One thing I would add, is putting the bar back in, make sure it's inserted all the way - it almost feels like it "clips" into place when it's there properly.
There are no arrows on the see-through strap so I watched the video carefully to see which way you were pushing yours and which strap mine, would not come out I had to end up taking it to the jewellers
You’ll wish you didn’t know this later but...a bit of scotch / cello tape tastefully applied to the bit that usually breaks (where the holes are) will get you 6 more months out of your band, if you catch it when the cracking starts!
I scratched myself with trying to remove the pin with a knife as i always did since years when i had to.. it always took minutes sometimes hours of sweat and high pulse…than I watched the video and successfully did it in 10 seconds. 😂 thank you
Great video! Had the watch years and the strap broke, just replaced it with a nato style strap. Tool wise - I used a corn on the cob holder. Worked perfect
Thanks so much for this! I have a W-86 and there were no arrows on the strap but your paperclip-pliers trick worked perfectly. I had to use a bit more force, but maybe just because my watch is so old (10 years+!) Thanks again! :)
Thanks David. Your video saved me hours of messing about trying to find how to do it. I am familiar with watch straps that have spring bars, so couldn't work out why I could not compress the bar on this type of watch. Answer - it's not a spring bar but a fixed bar system that needs a small 'drifter' to push it out *** in the right direction ***. Much appreciated.
Thank you. I've replaced several Casio watch bands but they always were spring loaded pins and I couldn't find the small compressible pin within the main pin; the F-105 has solid pins like in the video. I was going to cut the old band as you did, but I came across this video. Problem solved.
I think the strap on the W-91 is an 18mm one - oooo!! - which means you can replace it with a leather one or a NATO nylon type. I checked and there are other vids showing how this is done - and yep done it myself - but the big trick is learning from Dave Upton here, that you have to push the pin out only one way. Works with the Casio F-91W but not all the others - I have another Casio and that's stuck forever with that awful rubber thing.
I was gutted when my strap split and I decided to buy a new strap but wasn't sure how to fix it, so thank you for this video, wouldn't of had a clue otherwise
i was able to replace the broken strap with a strap from a previous f-91w that had a broken face, thank you! i knew it was the right idea to keep the old broken one 😂
Hello! Thanks for the video, it's really helpful! I used the tool that comes with a cellphone to open the sim tray, it works too! I wonder if after 8 years that you published this video your watch still have the same battery, they told me that it lasted for about 10 years?
I had to push VERY FIRMLY on the pins to get them out. (Thought I might stab myself.) They came out all the same. Thanks for the short and helpful video.
Update: Success! I cut down a larger sized paperclip to a length slightly longer than a finger width, and used it as a "chisel" by hitting it with the pliers in a controlled manner with watch resting edgewise on the carpet. Didn't need to hit my chisel/fingers too hard - accuracy was enough to get it to budge out the other side (thick end of the pin out first; so tap on the thinner pointy end as per direction of arrow on the original Casio band). Carpet as support was a good surface to work on too. Watch band replaced: F105-W. Thanks for the original video David - I was quite stumped like the others here as to how to "unspring" the rigid pin so am glad you took the time to make this for UA-cam. Saved hours of frustration. :)
Update: I replaced my strap again today (a silicone one this time, back to an original replacement strap because I don't like the bulk of the non-official ones). I looked at your video again but didn't watch closely enough and there wasn't a new arrow on the replacement strap - so I ended up pushing it in the wrong direction! ;o All is well though; no real damage and it all still works but yeah, the direction of pushing is from the minute side of the watch to the hour side just as you showed (F105-W). I should have checked both sides anyway because it's much looser and easier the second time around! I better make a note that I probably shouldn't even need the pliers next time.
to iCapyara post, although is an old one. Yup some isopropyl alcohol likely helped lubricate and loosen the crud holding old pins in place. Did not try peroxide or oil but thought of those. While wrist watches may be on the way out, as one poster mentioned, still like having mine, and I do have a cell phone which do not carry outside doing yard work. Still "ticking" in 2023!
My Casio W-59 has the same system, even with the arrow showing the direction but once got rid of the broken rubber strap I replaced the original pins with a pair of Vostok Amphibia 18mm springbars, which are really robust. Greetings from Spain (By the way, Gibraltar ir our ;-)
Yeah, I recently discovered those watches didnt have proper springbars too... thankfully I didnt do too much damage until then, LOL. But frankly the best thing to do once the original straps have fallen off (which they will invariably do after three years at most), is to put a NATO strap on that watch. Cheaper and far more rugged, and your watch will be protected against falling off from a torn strap much better too. Even if one bar gets torn out or breaks the watch will still hold on to the strap with the other bar.
@@davidupton3186 my FitBit strap and Casio strap both of them broke on the same day, some hours apart - what are the chances? I was actually going to buy a new Casio watch, but then I thought better, so once the replacement strap came, your video served perfectly with the task at hand! Once again, thank you :)
I agree, the old watch has a history to it that a new one doesn't. I replaced a battery on an old casio w59 and a timex atlantis recently, which felt good to keep them running.
I hope the friction is enough to keep the pin in place. Because it it slides you basically can lose you watch (not that a F91-W is expensive, but it would be a bummer).
My pins were a nightmare to come out. Bent multiple paperclips, broke my phone sim remover tool too. Way more stuck in than this vid. Ended up having to use the smallest hexagonal screwdriver head I have and use it like a chisel with a small hammer. Came right out. On the downside the hexagonal screw driver head widens too much as it goes up, I pushed it in too far and split the plastic around the holes. Grrr. But I did get the pins out, they just won't stay in anymore!
Thanks for this explanation. It's unfortunate that eight years after you made this, it's hard to find cheap Casio-compatible bands on eBay, the market seemingly dominated by bands for smart watches. Amazon has a few, but they're $10 - 12, and at that point you might as well buy a whole new watch. Sad.
I have one with a working strap. I tried pushing it out with the strap on and the pin doesn't come out no matter how hard I press with the paper clip. I'm guessing the strap has to be cut off with a scalpel for the pin to come out, which I don't understand why....
You shouldn't have to cut the strap off. The pin is visible from the side. Just make sure you're pushing in the direction of the arrow. You could try placing the watch over a hole in a piece of wood and tapping the pin out with a hammer and short piece of paper clip.
Where can I buy the straps? I know it sounds stupid because I can get a new one for very cheap price nowadays, but the watch was my dad's gift to me so I want to keep it forever :(
He he hehhh. I was actually in Kobe when my old strap broke. The Casio shop wanted to keep my old watch in 50% part exchange of a new one. No way, I bought a new F-91W for a few bucks full price from the Motomachi mall around the corner to keep me going (probably similar price to a replacement strap on eBay, actually) and kept my old one. I bought a new strap once I got home (eBay...) and now I have two watches!
I tried to do this tonight, pushing in the direction of the arrow. I used a push pin, safety pin, sewing pin, large and small sized paper clips, sim card remover, entomology pin. I tried grabbing it with pliers and pushing with all my might. I couldn't get the rod out. So, I gave up and just decided to wear it with the original strap. I figure the watch is so cheap that it's not worth buying whatever the tool is for that.
This is one of the most useful videos I have ever found on UA-cam.
Thanks David :)

Pretty useful for me, as I searched "replacing Casio watch strap" and this is what had come up. Now my everyday watch has a new, unbroken strap.

You might need to tap the pin out with a shortened piece of paper clip and a small hammer. Double check it's in the direction if the arrow.
I think them pins must tighten up over time on my old watch the pins are stuck fast.
Check that you're pushing them in the right direction and maybe use a tiny punch with the watch held above a hole in a piece of wood.
