Matt, I know you probably won't see this but I work on heavy equipment and deal with hydrostatic drive systems quite a bit. I know the brake system you currently have in the Bombi may be simpler than a hydrostat but I guarantee you would be able to drive that thing so much easier with a drive motor on each side. Your current engine could be used to power a hydraulic pump that would drive each track independently...
Was about to say the same. His drive shaft, axle and brakes is not much more simple than an hydrostatic system. You even have less contrain with an hydrostatic system it's more reliable too and almost maintenance free besides oil changes
Hydrostatic definitely seems like the right way to go. On tight trails like this you could just spin around in place to hook up.

Agree. And I would not even consider ceramic brakes as has been mentioned previously, they are specifically designed to work in a very high heat environment which is exact opposite of the intended environment for the Bombi.
I'm still shocked he went with brakes instead of hydrostatic steering. They did the brakes on case dozers in the 70s and 80s, and they found it to be the worst design in history. Consistently failed and never worked properly.
Imagine how much heat hydro would generate for a rig like this ..where would the big coolers go?
There are many different types of diferential steering. The brakes he has done is an option but only used for small vehicles with lower power. Hydro is the best, but a more complicated system they probably don't have the room for all the components. There is also double or triple differential, which is a complicated gearing way to do it, but would likely fit in the available space. However any of the better options would require the front drive axle to be heavily modified. Matt will likely keep the system he has, but change the gearing in the front axlefrom the posi it seems to be to a traditional gearing where one drive wheel spins while the other does not spin and can be braked easily.
My family uses a John Deere 350 Tractor-Crawler for salvage logging at our forest property, and the steering for the bulldozer is similar, but a little bit different than your setup for the Bombi. When one of the steering levers is applied _halfway,_ a *clutch* is disengaged on the corresponding track. It is only _after the halfway point_ (when the *clutch* is disengaged) that the brakes will engage. When pulling a heavy load, the reduction of power transferred to one track is usually enough to turn the machine on a dime. I believe this type of setup would enable you more control over the Bombi's steering _and_ (about 11%) more efficient general operation.

That sounds the same as a ripsaw. I think it was Cleetus that had one, and had problems with his clutches a year or two back. Each side, as far as I remember, had a drive clutch and a brake clutch.
They know screwed up big time on the build and are now removing my technical posts on compound differential that a simple google search would have given them. I suspect that the Bombi will be sitting for a while. Makes me wonder if the differential is even driving on the correct side of the ring gear.

Mat, I'm sure everyone is saying this, but, you MUST make this a dual drive unit somehow. Perhaps inboard clutches on the rear axle at the hubs instead of brakes just push a left or right clutch. Cut the axle tube and axle and incorporate a system to slip and lock that side of the drive. Weld up the spiders and have solid transfer to both axles. I'm confident you and your NASA engineer can work something out. LOVING the Bombi !

I’m always amazed at what they don’t have to do the things they do. I would have a land anchor. They are only $700. I would also have an induction heater for removing the bolts they are ALWAYS breaking.

Relying on brakes to steer EATS up pads. Both tracks should have independent drive sprockets. Thats how our Bradley's operated. We rarely ever used brakes. Each track having their own drive also allows for pivoting in place. This is so painful to watch.
I 100% agree. But what I don't understand is why is there so little slip in the differential. Or does it just have so much grip that it doesn't matter? Hydro drive would probably be better for this scale don't you think? Like skidsteer XL internals?

Would cross drill rotors help this at all with all the heat and ice cold temperatures 🤷

This was my biggest concern with them deleting the top vent. That thing was there for a very good reason.
My gut feeling is that this thing has way too much power now for a brake based steering system. Unfortunately, a hydrostatic conversion seems to be the best way to go.
That and larger tracks; also there is a hell of a lot of inertia in that drive train.
I don't think it is too much power, he has trouble steering when using very little power. I think either the differential has wrong geometry (acting as limited slip) or there is something wrong with the brakes, air, wrong type of pads,...

Would have to agree because not only too much power but when you brake one side of a differential the spider gears by design effectively raises the gear ratio many timesof the side not being stopped or slowed (it's said to be double but not exactly), so whan you brake one side like that it is like shifting from something like maybe first gear to fourth at way too low a speed,,, hence why you hear the engine bogg so bad and at times stall,,,,, this is the basic stuff they teach you in auto mechanics school (I just happen to be an ASE mechanic of 40+ years), he needs a hydrostat/full hydrualic drive system, with all the power that engine has he could run a pretty monsterous pump and that thing would be very fast and the power even greater than now for pulling, I built a simlar machine years ago for use in a junkyard moving dead cars and trucks around, it used a 16 horsepower briggs engine and some hydraulics stolen out of a old burned out mini excavator(pump and drive motors), the tracks were home made and very much like the bombi's just a bit narrower, it was slow but that damn thing would pull like a freight train and out do a full size pickup plowing snow and it was about the same size as a polaris razor side by side utv,, LOTS of massive power in hydraulics.
if you look at vehicles like the rip saw they are using multiple discs and multiple calipers per side, you are right the single disc is not enough, the single disc and single set of pads heats up so fast its just too low of a duty cycle to manage it
When Matt is nervous you know it's extreme! FYI you can build a shielded wire by wrapping a normal wire with strands of copper or wrapping foil around it and then heat shrink or electrical tape over that.
You can buy self adhesive copper foil tape - only for places that don't flex or vibrate, but pretty effective. You need to ground it at each end.
Never try this on an ignition cable - you'll just shorten the life a lot...
@@lardo666 Shields never get grounded on both ends, one end only so any interference can be directed off the wire.
If grounded on both ends, current from induced voltage may start travelling through the shield, which is even worse.

@@BitBuhkit That's certainly not how every shielded RF cable on the planet work - here we ground each end to the enclosing box to prevent signals getting in or out. If one end only works then job done - interference is always fun to suppress
That sometimes works but some of the sensors are such low power that any spike in another higher power wire for like lights let’s say it can make the reading wrong enough the computer freaks out so even the shielding can take current and make it read wrong in weird occasions simmilar to how a tv antenna will get bad signal around a wall outlet if it’s ran too close

I have been on that hill in a snow cat a 1000 times and at night its no joke.!! That spot is the first Really steep spot. Nothing to reference for distance and it can mess with your head for sure..Good job!!

Have you thought about large trash bags as an emergency coverup if you get stranded??? You use them for so many things. Compact and versatile.
Sketchy - Hope you get bombi sorted soon. Think converting to individual hydraulic drive motors could be a good plan so you can control each side (powerplant has plenty of power to run them) and something on tracks to stop side slipping.
No doubt you have plenty of things in mind to make it run well....Also don't know what it is with modern cam sensors the seem to crap out all the time, its probably compared to ones in late 80s/90s they have like no shielding on them or the wires.

Nice engine. Nice paint. It's a winter vehicle and no defrosters😮. Other obvious issues which have been highlighted already. I know you'll get everything working.

For that sensor you think is getting cross-talk, you might run that connection in shielded cable, using braided outer jacket wire, with chassis ground on both ends. That should help with any cross-talk.
But, you do need to fix old Bombi. Even just adding the lights, the engine cover, (so you can carry lots more stuff), and misc. items. That machine deserves to be closer to complete.
If you run shielded cables you only ground one end. Other wise you create a new interference loop issue. Major issue with anything over a few kbps of data transfer.

The Bombi needs a pivoting type high powered spotlight, mounted on the outside next to the passengers side, or mounted on the roof, which can be pivoted from inside the cab. Also an emergency survival - medical bag should be installed in the Bombi at all times.
Matt, you need to get cameras for the Bombi. I got one for Christmas to put in my 4-Runner. It has both forward facing and reverse facing cameras. And….it records!! You need these for all your vehicles. They are well worth the $100.
Bombi: unprepared, unstable, unbelievable. Matt, know when to fold em. Learn to just say No.
Caulen, number one rule of cold weather survival, keep your extremities moving. First they taught us in CWS, cold weather survival, training is to wiggle your toes & fingers constantly to keep blood flowing. Keep your ears, forehead, neck & mouth/nose covered to prevent heat loss. If you develop sweat, you have too much on & run the risk of Hyperthermia & passing out. Even in sub-freezing temps i never wear more than an undershirt, button down workshirt, & carhart style coat. Wearing too much is is just as bad as not wearing enough.
thin layers is the key wear 3 hoodies instead of a big jacket then you can shed or add layers as needed
Wool is the key here. As it is light on the skin, let moisture escape/evaporate off the skin, and in general feels much warmer.
The inner most layer primary function is to transport moisture off you body/skin.
Second layer is insulation
Third/final layer primary function is to ventilate out excess heat and be breathable.

That Bombi is a dumpster fire but the basics seem to be there. Solid. The drivetrain you guys designed and built is just amazing.

@@toddn.3123 All of you must have never taken Physics or you flunked. If this Bombi had skis out front it would be fine but since is doesnt even a basic open differential will not work because the differential does not have enough internal mechanical advantage for the non braked side to over come the resistance of the track. Those of us that run skidsteers or treacked tractors know this. There are only two ways to do this correctly. One way is with a compound differential as used by Cletrac and Oliver. The other is to use a clutch for each side like every other crawler maker did.
I did some digging and there is a new type differential in some vehicles that uses electrically enngaged clutches for positraction. One of these differentials might handle part of the problem but I do not know if they would have enough mechanical advantage to over come the drag when one track is engaged.
Hydraulic drive would not give them the speed they want even with a variable hydraulic pump. Me doing the build I would have found a differential from the appropriate size Oliver tractor and done it right.
I use rolls of rubber conveyor belt like from a rock quarry or grain mill to roll on the trailer, and provide traction for steel track tractors like that

I do feel sorry for Kaulin!! So cold. I know all too well what that feels like! Great job getting them out safely. Get the engine shut-down fixed, get the brakes to work properly and install a heater/defroster!!!! THEN you can take it out on recoveries 😁

🤦 There's no reason for 90% of the 17 people in every vid to even be there though. The last one I watched, they had 11 people there. Most of the stood around while 3 or 4 people did everything.

Have you considered something like a maybach, double diff steering system. I feel like it might give you the strength to drive the tracks with the same engine and transmission the way you want, but then use a hydrostatic system in parallel to provide the turning input. I feel like doubling the diff with your current setup would be quite manageable for you guys to do with parts you are already familiar with. Probably fab it together using 4 standard automotive differentials. Possibly for you it might be preferable to a full hydrostatic setup.
Although the simplest solution might just be to increase the break booster/piston size and stiffen up the break mounts so they don't flex and squeak.
Its weird that hydrostatic drive was invented because brake steering was so helpful in harsh conditions;) love the show and bombi episodes rock!!

It seems in interesting choice to take that risk just to recover a side by side
I groomed snowmobile and X-country ski trails for years with a Bombi in Idaho. You need a hydraulic braking system, and then you could do a neutral steer and spin around on a dime in the middle of the road.
You need to fix/make your tracks better. You could easily fix your tracks if you welded a bolt to the front of every rib. You would want to alternate the bolts to prevent digging as if all the studs were in line of each other. I'd think you would want to keep them as close to the tires and on both sides too. Example: Spaced as follows per side; 1" 3" 5" 2" 4" repeat, for a total of 10 ribs. I would think by doing that spacing it would help prevent digging a useless rut as if all the pins were in line with each other.🙂
BRAKES, double calipers or add rotors and calipers on the rear idler, you just need more sq inches of clamping surface area. In off road racing when we went from 33 to 37 tires [many years ago] we could not stop and boiled the brake fluid. Our fix bigger rotors and six piston calipers down sized on the master cylinder from 1" to 7/8 and line size from #4 to #3 this provides more psi, now you could lock up the brakes at 125mph and change.😎
You must have flunked physics. There is a Reason that A man name White invented a compound differential to be used in this kind of application. White compound differentials were use by Cletrac then Oliver and in military tanks and by Studebaker Corp in the M15 and M29 Weasel.

Ever seen a tracked dozer take off sideways on a side slope of ice? Tracks are great of flat land, not so much on slopes to the sides especially. Maybe should consider ice picks on the tracks.

Matt - Your brakes sound like you are using brake pads that are designed for long life and are quickly getting over heated and fading out. What I suspect you need is a brake pad with more bite. Also, in your previous video you mentioned maybe going to ceramic brakes. Assuming you meant brake pads, those are designed to be dust free. They are not designed for heavy use conditions you are in (pretty useless in my experience). I also suspect that you might be headed to a hydrostatic drive. However, in the meantime while you develop that system, the Bombi needs to be made to be safe and useable. I would suggest going to a more aggressive brake pad such as the Hawk HP+, EBC Yellow stuff, Wilwood BP30 or 40 (I seem to remember you put Wilwoods on the Bombi). I would also suggest going to slotted rotors. These will help with dissipating any water that gets on the rotors and maintaining good contact with the pads.
For what you guys do all the time and potential with the Bombi, hydro-static might be a better option. You could go to a heavy equipment boneyard and pick a hydro pump, radiators, hoses, final drives for each track. Draw back is it won't move as fast which would be a real bummer.
You need a backup camera, defroster on the windshield, road flares to see your turn around areas,also lights hooked up, that's a good start,and fix the other problem's , also..
How you are working out the kinks of the bombi on jobs provides great entertainment ... And love Chewy... Particularly with high fi audio headphones !!!😜
I live in Canada, 30deg F is a spring day. Get that Bombi fixed right, before someone gets hurt.
One idea I have is to use a set it up like a Bobcat skidsteer. Use a boat throttle to hold RPMs. The brake pads may work better when hot. Maybe switching to something that grabs more when cold could help too.

Look at the video of the Bombi loading up on the trailer looks like the track is completely ready to come off. Slippery also on the trailer could slide to one side easily. on ice conditions. Looks like it would take a bit more redesign and rework all the buds with the steering and breaking before it is a reliable winter recovery tool. Good Luck and the continuous saga.
Second recovery with the bombi and I'd say you need hydrostatic drive. And a 12v heater pointed at the window.

Heater box on the back wall with a duct tight to the ceiling to the windshield for defrosters would work good. You can put a couple taps for in cab heat you can open also.

Watching the hi-tech defrost in action, I'm reminded of my very, almost identical Hi-Tech windshield defrost on my 1985 Jeep CJ-7. Damn it, I miss tht ride! Love you you guys! What a fantastic team!
That was one bumpy ride down the trail in Bombi! I gotta ask, why take the Bombi this time in the dark when it hasn't been worked on since the previous job? You did say one of the other vehicles would have worked for this recovery. The list of repair items on the Bombi just got bigger. Kaulin, you need some insulated boots for that weather, I think you mentioned having cold feet on another recent video. I had gortex boots while stationed in Germany, best thing having dry and warm feet in winter! Maybe switch driving that side by side with Jefe next time. Don't know if they paid you enough for that job but thanks for sharing your adventures out there!
In bigger snow cats like a prinoth each drive sprocket is controlled by a hydrostatic pump and motor. It allows each track to work completely independently which allows you to turn and brake way easier
That's how I would have built it as well. Hydrostatic with independent motors and each lever controls its own motor.

The one thing that makes me really nervous about the Bombi are the horizontal tracks that seem like they'd provide no traction while going along the side of slope. Aside from that, there are some safety issues: no roll cage, seat belts, defroster, or emergency brake. But I still love that thing.
Might want to try metallic brake pads.
That is the sound of wet and ice making your pads slide against the rotor instead of grabbing.
Believe it or not another way to handle it would be to go drum brakes and adjust them like the did on the 1962 Chevy trucks.
Tighten till you can’t turn the wheel by hand. The result is the brakes drag and squeegee the drum surface till they warm the drum up enough to expand a little away from the shoes.
Will cause a little extra brake wear but as it is fairly enclosed wet and ice don’t get to them so easy as well as the squeegee and friction heat help to keep them clear to grab.
Having a 1962 Chevy truck and driven it in all sorts of weather conditions I speak from experience. They work from floods to ice and on the chance you find you have to push the vehicle, adjust them back a notch or 2 and no more drag.
He needs Disc Quiet. It is a spray that will deglaze the pads and disc, or rough them up enough to function properly.

Noise is the small part of the problem.
It’s the slipping of the brakes that is making it so it will not turn.
So metallic pads will grab better when wet in snow and ice.
Drums would offer some shelter against all the snow and ice getting turned up by the tracks.
I even thought maybe adding another set of brakes on the front axel for more stopping power as well as the extra safety.🤔

The noise is because the brakes are very hot. I think hydrostatic is your answer. The brake steering system is a great idea, i was sure it was going to work but i believe its just has too much power and the differential wont allow it to work. Its still AWESOME though!
love what you have done the BomBee you need a different differential or put a hydraulic drive motor on each drive wheel 😃
Hey Matt. Im not sure if you were planning on it but a weather proof carrier on the roof would come in handy for drinking water, food, blankets, extra cloths etc for the team.
The ocean boat fogs up really easily, too. A good hack is to put dish soap on the glass with a paper towel. It’ll prevent fog for a long time. Not permanently

A good additional tool for the Bombi is a Backup Camera Via a Car stereo head unit would also have navigation! The Brakes you need Slotted and Drilled Rotors with Carbon Ceramic Brake Pads larger than the ones you have with Multi cylinder calipers...
The brakes on it before were absolutely horrible and did better, he needs a different brake cylinder calipers discs and pads are fine
@@Jacobtheunwise The Pads and Rotors are not correct for the way he is using them and why it Screams, the Additional mods as i stated above would give him better grip on the rotors and eliminate the horrible Noises ! You clearly don't have a Clue about how Brakes Actually work or how they are working in that machine.. As someone who has worked in the Automotive Parts industry many years i do Know all about the Parts and what he needs for that Reason and situation..

@heunwise The Drums had more Shoe Surface touching the Drum AKA contact area about twice that of the current setup and it's not rocket science, Also it wasn't a 9" Ford rearend upside down! As someone who has Built things and repaired things all my life from parts and Pieces for other people, Gives me the Experience you don't have to understand exactly what is going on... Don't know if you've had a Drum Brake vehicle with them all the way around like me but there is one reason they replaced them it is they lock up easy and make you lose control AKA Grab and lock down the wheels! My 66 C10 does that...
@@Xxjoker21xX if the brakes are not overheating, then making pad size bigger, while keeping the same size pistons and cylinders would reduce clamping force.
Matt & crew, I'm interested in the subject of emergency preparedness and survival. Since you mentioned a survival bag, I'd love to see a segment showing the things you keep in your vehicles for emergencies. I think I've seen a MyMedic MyFak in one of your vehicles. What else do you carry?
When you were filming the back of mats head from the backseat out the front window, it totally had a mystery science theater vibe :-)
Great video kept them going. Suggestion having a food stock, radios that can hit local repeaters, on ham radio for back up. Blankets, fire starting stuff. Just in case you have to spend the night on some mountain top in winter.
Hopefully you can get it running better and steering better before you use it again. More important is you made it home safely.
I’d say go full hydro for the steering. With how small it is and those narrow trails that’ll the ideal setup to be able to turn tight.

I'm from Southern Alberta and we deal with snow all the time. Sometimes when you're going through snow like you have been you can get a dusting of snow on the rotors that melts and freezes. Then you get a layer of ice on the rotors, which prevents braking. I don't know if Bombi had drums before but switching back might be a good solution to look at before having to go to hydrostatic.
Hey Matt, we know you are big on safety, but some internal padding on all those blunt edges in the Bombi's cabin wouldn't go amiss. A cracked head on a subzero night is no joke.
Trip like that really pushes home the need to get that thing finished/upgraded/reliable.

No joke though, the Bombi as it is now, unfinished and unprepared, still comes off better than it did on the last jobs they used it for before the rebuild. The video doesn't show us everything, but I think the way the rig is running as it is now shows that Matt's slapdash build and design style actually works.
The Bombi has a huge increase in power and track surface so the original brake design is inadequate.
A simple set of brake boosters would be a huge improvement.
Bulldozers with differential steer utilize a declutch system to help steer easier. If you can figure out how to put a declutch system in where all your wheel spacers are you are a genius!!!
As for spikes or cleets on the tracks, side bite with tracks is always a trade. It makes turning more difficult. So they definitely need to fix the steering issue first.
Matt stiffen the caliper bracket a ram 1500 has a tsb for a groan noise in reverse its just a bracket. Going to the axle tube it should help the noise. Might not help with the performance.
Hey, a heavier plate for the brake would help either th vibration. Flex in the pieces is what causes the crazy vibration. Love to watch all you guys and commend you on the cool builds!

Look up Disc Quiet. It is a spray that is sprayed directly on the disc. I suspect it could have something like diamond dust or some such hard particulate that literally sands the glazed disc surface, likely the pads too. My bicycle disc brakes squealed like crazy and didn’t brake well, after a couple applications the problem was solved. I believe what you are referring to is the grease substance applied to the back side of the disc pad, opposite the disc surface.

Improvements to consider; Replace drive to hydro-static. Build joy stick control panels on each side of driver seat, like on the modern earth movers. Right panel would be for joy stick forward/ back and turns. Left panel for throttle and switch controls for all winches, lights, etc. Front windshield defroster. Build hinged cover over engine conpartment using heavy duty wire grate welded to supporting frame and bolted on four corners. It would help get better air flow heat off engine. Designate a sea container to store off season. Just ideas.
