I'm an aging baby boomer and the 1970's were my sweet spot years musically...Steely Dan was always on the radio, but until I started following UA-cam reactors, I had forgotten how many great songs they put out 😎😊
To me what makes them the best isn’t their radio hits (which they have a lot of), but it’s how many unbelievable deep cuts that they have. I like those more than the radio hits. Really not a bad song. Find another band that has that many amazing deep cuts on any given album.
@@mikewritz I like Steely Dan, but not enough to get into their album catalog. Given the quality of the chart hits, their deep cuts I'm sure are great. I miss the 1970's. Today's music is god awful.
@@davidhapka5410 Hey to each his own but I promise you if you pick any album and just let it play in the background while you work or cook or better yet one day with headphones on, you won’t regret it. If you like their radio hits you’ll love their deep cuts, trust me.
@@davidhapka5410 I think its more that today's TOP 40 is awful, not modern music in general. A LOT of the bands and songs that are now considered classic weren't that big of pop hits at the time and there was just as much cheesy, pointless hit-of-the-moment crap on back then as now. difference now is that the internet allows people to release music out of the record label/radio controlled environment it used to be. This means the good new music is not really crossing over to pop radio anymore that just markets to the little kids and teeny boppers who have always dominated music charts, so you don't hear it as much. Good music is on obscure streaming services/websites or released independently by artists. Also music is not so much Blues/rock'n'roll based anymore (in a broad music theory sense), it's more Latin, hip-hop, electro-dance based, which i don't like and sounds weird to me. I recognize that because it's so different in basic intent then the rock i like i can't objectively prove it's worse.
"Like a castle in it's corner in a midevil game, I forsee terrible trouble and I stay here just the same." He's referring to himself as the Rook on the Chessboard. Absolutely love that line.
Life long 'Dan fan , going back to the early 70's when I first got into music . Countless songs that will impress for different reasons . Going to recommend one that many may not : King of the World - the groove should hook you straight away and the lyrics should keep you entertained as well - its about surviving in a post nuclear apocalypse in the American southwest . Have fun
Thanks for reacting to my favourite Steely Dan song, Harri .. I never get tired of hearing this early classic .. Glad you enjoyed it so much .. The Pointer Sisters did a nice cover of it, singing from a woman's perspective .. Check it out if you get a chance .. Wayne
Have a lot of fun listening to their stuff. Their stuff has such great production. Great lyrics. Heck, your favorite smooth vocalist Michael McDonald is on several of their records. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the main 2 guys, but they like having the best studio guys play as their career goes on. So much good music. My favorites are Aja and the Royal Scam as far as albums go.
I was shocked to learn this is a Steely Dan song - I always thought it was Crosby Stills & Nash, probably because of the rich backing vocals and the acoustic guitar.
When I first heard 'Can't Buy A Thrill' LP (in '72 I think), I thought it simply had a potential single release on every track, no duff ones, just memorable songs and pure musical gold.
Great reaction. I always figured the protagonist knew he was the tool she would use to end her relationship; he dreaded being caught in the blowback but could not make himself quit. You added a new wrinkle.
“Gaucho” is probably my favorite song by Steeyly Dan but it’s a tough call with all their amazing stuff👍 Grew up with my parents listening and have loved them until this day
My absolute favorite Steely Dan song, and I'm the only one I know that likes it, Same with "I did it in a minute" by Hall and Oats, I love it and everyone I know hates it.
I don't like this song because it sounds nothing like them. Like I said, it sounds like the Eagles. This song doesn't have the transitions and jazzy complex instrumentation of most of their other songs.
I’ve always liked this tune! Even before I could understand what the hell was going on, it tripped my trigger, lol. Maybe it’s the basic ness of the tune… I’ve no idea. But worry not ojstinson, there are a few of us out there!👍
Of all the reaction videos on UA-cam. You have the best one. I like how you are respectful to the old music. And you love the Beatles. So as a Beatle fanatic Keep on listening.
The British folk-rock group with wonderful harmonies-Lindisfarne. From the mid-70s, “Run For Home.” An earlier hit was “Meet Me On The Corner,” also a wonderful melodic song.
No more booty calls for him ! Nice pick Harri, way back from their first album. I also love a song from their 2nd album I’d highly recommend called “ King of the World “. You can hear how they evolved noticably to a more complex style.
She's definitely pulling the strings...only calls when her "man is out of town". The perils of love triangles. Never worth it to be involved with someone in a relationship for sure.
oh wow you gave me a fresh perspective on this because you’re right women probably get put in this position more often than men and honestly it’s a situation probably tougher on the male ego (generally speaking)
On this same topic but from another viewpoint (at least according to Mr. Withers) you NEED to listen to the great voice and FUNKY tune - USE ME UP by Bill Withers! Aja might be my favorite Steey Dan song hmmm
Early Steely Dan, before Michael mustered the courage to do lead vocals full time, as David Palmer sings lead here. REELIN' IN THE YEARS, RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER, and MY OLD SCHOOL are some other great early Steel Dan hits. The "Aja" and "Gaucho" albums are my favorites.
Steely Dan is one of my favorite groups, but "Dirty Work" is not top tier for me. David Palmer sings the lead vocal, but Donald Fagen's biting, sarcastic vocal style was part of Steely Dan's signature sound. "Dirty Work" also is missing the instrumental virtuosity of Steely Dan's greatest work. Finally, the arrangement and production sound dated to me. It's amazing that the more sophisticated and modern-sounding "Do It Again" appeared on the same album; it gave the world a glimpse of the band's unusual talent that would flower in subsequent records.
I think the innocence of David Palmer’s vocal is the perfect fit for this song. Donald Fagen’s cynical, sarcastic tone would turn this into a VERY different song.
The thing about SD is they did the sound they needed for a song. Some songs are evocative of the Eagles, others (for example, Reeling in the Years) have a splash of Doobie Brothers. The lyrics are usually grounded in the nitty gritty emotional reality of life and they always made the sounds amplify those emotions...
@@jirimondo I don't like this song because it sounds nothing like them. Like I said, it sounds like the Eagles. This song doesn't have the transitions and jazzy complex instrumentation of most of their other songs.
You can stick with Steely Dan for days and not run out of pure genius music.
Facts
Absolutely! Saw them in concert and they are amazing!
Wow... brings back memories from that era... thanks for sharing!!
They are one of the very best! Saw them in 74’ and 2000 I think, the Two Against Nature tour. 2nd row seats, center. Best ever show!

David Palmer sang lead on this one.

One of the few that Donald Fagen didn't sing lead on. Nevertheless a great song. It was years before I realized that it was Steely Dan. Years!.
He didn't his voice, so that first album has him and 2 other guys sing lead. Drummer Jim Hodder, and the supposed lead singer David Palmer.
Love your explanation of what the “dirty work” in this song really means
You will enjoy any song you pick from them.
Harri, you realize that Michael MacDonald sang backup for Steely Dan correct? Check out Peg if you haven't already.

This is one of the few Steely Dan songs that Donald Fagen wasn't the lead singer. David Palmer was the lead singer, who was later fired from the band.
