This is one of the few video game to board game adaptations that I prefer the board game. I like that I can see what my enemy is building and react a bit better. No more being mortared from behind the fog of war! This one is a top ten game for me because I can play it with my 8 year old son and he is ALWAYS excited to play! If your a fan of the video game this week is special because they announced Company of Heroes 3 for 2022. I really like this game and was super happy to see Cody's coverage.
I honestly love this game. The terrain packs and the elite commanders are must haves in my opinion. The 3d buildings allow you to hide units in them until they are in line of sight for enemy units so it actually changes tactics.

How many hex games can one person have? I have: Memoir ‘44 The Great War C&C Napoleonics, C&C Ancients Fields of Despair Space Empires 4X Survive! Escape From Atlantis I thought I’d escaped them when I got Undaunted Normandy, but that ended up just being square hexagons! Also thinking of getting Twilight Imperium or Eclipse (any recommendations?) and now Company of Heroes!
Indeed. There are too many great games. TI4 and Eclipse are both fantastic. TI4 is my second favorite game of all time. It’s a much longer, more thematic game than Eclipse. Eclipse is really a Eurogame in disguise, with a few Amerigame elements. It’s a lot of fun too
Could you imagine somehow combining Company of Heroes with War Room? At least for land battles. That would be the board game equivalent of marrying quantum mechanics with the theory of general relativity. Either way, your time would be affected.
If I can ask one more question, do you have any recommendations on what to get for the game. There's a ton of stuff, but I definitely don't need all of it.

I also went to their store to grab the world builder expansion because the summer/winter map boards included with it are now discontinued and not included in 2.0. So you may want to pick 1 or 2 up if you want those maps before they're gone.

So for your 2 vs 2 game, which Allied faction joined the Axis side? (For those who don't know, the four player version of the game comes with three Allied factions and one German (Axis) faction). And given your passion for WWII history, was this an issue regarding your enjoyment of the game?
We played British and Americans vs Soviets and Nazis. Didn't hurt my enjoyment one bit. I know for a lot of people, wargames are the primary way people engage with history, and they want them to be as historically accurate as possible. For me, it's just a game, and I can have fun with it even if we fudge history a little bit here and there.
Tide of Iron is what I thought about when I saw this game, which looks really good. Lol! Joke at the end was a good one! Just finished Rick Atkinsons An Army At Dawn, starting book II The Day of Battle.
Played this with a friend a few weeks ago who back the Kickstarter. We really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the Kickstarter to get in on it this time.
TY for this interesting report Cody! I usually agree with 99% of your opinions so your opinion about a new game is always interesting to me. Although to be honest the only category of games that I'm going to question your opinion are those about WWII because you are such a big fan of this war that your rating may often be slightly too generous: Don't you think so? ;)
I do like a good WWII game, sure. But there are many other themes that I'm a pretty big fan of. I love a good Sci-fi space opera game, and I love Napoleonic era games. But I don't think my love of a certain theme would blind me to a game's shortcomings. At the end of the day, my opinion is all I really have to offer.
@@malachor5ve LoL! The OP mentioned his preference for "hex and counter" wargames, which is the typical format for almost all classic wargames, and was the only format ever used for many decades. Essentially, movement on the map is regulated by hexagon-shaped spaces, and units, leaders, vehicles, etc, are represented on the map by cardboard counters. Hence the term, "Hex and Counter" wargame. A key thing to know about the counters is that each counter serves to show information about the unit/leader/vehicles/etc depicted. This information typically includes ratings for attack, defense, strength, health, movement allowance, etc, etc. So, what I meant by my earlier comment is that CoH also uses hexes, and... It also has components which substitute for the well-known counters! Specifically, instead of counters, it uses minis to represent what it is, number of minis to represent strength, and dice to represent other factors which would also be found showing on a cardboard counter. So, while this game doesn't use cardboard counters, it uses substitute components which show all the exact same information which cardboard counters would show.

They actually have a solo/ coop expansion for the game that works pretty well. The only issue one might have is it only is the German factions that can be the npcs.
I went all in on it. Honest to God, its my favorite WW2 board game. It's just that good.

Indeed. I used to dream up playing Star Wars Armada, but everything fighters engaged, switching to Star Wars X-Wing.

The minis are too tiny and not very detailed.
It would have been better if they stuck to one of the scales already used in wargames.
I didn't have a problem with them. I thought the game looked and played great. To each their own.
I love the PC games but when I saw this on KS for the first time it was naaah. Now you made me regret it ;)
