only reason i'd replace 30-06 with 308 / x 51 guns, parts and ammo are more available where i live but almost all 30 cal stuff is too expensive or hovering around the same price

For me its 20 gauge, .22 rimfire, 5.56/.223, 9mm, .38Spl. I don't need a .308/7.62x51 or a .30-06. If I needed a dedicated deer cartridge then it would be .25-06 or .270 but 5.56/.223 will take deer and so will 20 gauge buckshot. Even 9mm and .38Spl. will take deer.

  • @1820kj

Well, my first and most important would be the 12 gauge. Nothing is more versatile, and target practice is not generally required after patterning your shotgun. Second, would be a 308 for me. It hits hard and is common. Third would be 357 mag as you can also use 38 special. This is easy for me to cast and reload. Fourth would be 9mm for my high cap pistols, and 5th would be 22lr. Now, I have left out 5.56 or 223 for my own personal reasons. If the poo poo ever really hit the fan, that stuff will be all over the place. Will not be any shortage of it. We are talking need. Need is different than want.

  • @pfpublius

I would sub in 6.5 creedmore for the 30-06 just because it can dual purpose a bit easier. It's a solid defensive round but also has a good flat, long trajectory for hunting. You can also shoot the grendels too so it's a pretty dynamic caliber. I don't need to drop a deer across a canyon, so i don't need anything more in my parts. That said...i do not have a creedmore chambered rifle but i do have a bolt action 30-06...so i have some of that around anyway. But i agree this one is a highly subjective decision.

Great commentary. Their was a time my firearms were selected on the basis of what "WallyWorld" had in stock. Sadly, I still get some of my cartridges there such as 22LR, .308 Win. , 12 Guage and 6.5 Creedmoor in hunting and FMJ cartridges. "WallyWorld" no longer sell handgun cartridges due to a Walmart employee shooting another Walmart associate with handgun cartridges purchased at that Walmart. In addition, "WallyWorld" bowed to the Gun Control advocates and stopped selling .223 Rem. and 7.62x39 cartridges as well after this tragedy. Only the Walton family intervention prevented "WallyWorld" from a "Total" ban on firearms and cartridge sales like "Dork's" (DICK'S) Sporting Goods.

@@GunActivities365 Sadly with today's variety of cartridge sources, those of us in the shooting/hunting community will just have to shop around since I do not believe the Walton family will allow handgun cartridges to be sold at "WallyWorld" ever again. "WallyWorld's" handgun cartridges were very affordable especially those Remington/Winchester bulk cartridges in the 50/100 and 200 round count.

Would swap 5.56 for .223 (bolt rifle function and way more ammo variety 40% more). Would swap out 30-06 to .308/6.5 because of more ammo options, better ballistics at longer ranges and more AR platforms. I am aware of all the new .243, .257, .264, .284 etc. ammo, but too focused on purpose, platforms and ammo not tested enough. 22lr & 9mm great (pistol, revolver & rifle...if using pistol/carbine try to use same platform to share magazine and test that they shoot well from both) and 12GA goes 100% of what you would need to do. All this is if you decide to stay home, because nobody is carrying all 5 in a SHTF WROL situation. If that's the case, you are probably down to 22lr and .223 based on weight restrictions and ammo availability.

@@GunActivities365 but most here (including me) are not ready for that conversation. The 22lr basically comes down to equipping yourself (and family). Example: you can buy 4 Ruger 10/22 and 1500 bullets, which you can carry in a backpack for less than $1,000. In some scenarios 4 22lrs are better than 1 whatever else, but most people are more interested in having their X firearm, in the X caliber, with X glass (this actually works), X bipod, in X chassis for multiple $$$, knowing they will never shoot at that level and will only use it for 1% of their...but cannot afford their family protection on an individualized basis and we know unless it's the last option, we are not going out of the house with a bolt gun option before a semiauto.

Narrow it down to two. 12 and the 3006. The 12 gauge can be loaded for any short range purpose. The 3006 can be loaded light with .223 sabot rounds, and heavy with 230gr fmj. You can only carry so many firearms at 1 time. But multiple loads for the same caliber can.

Sound reasoning. Like you said, there isn't really a WRONG answer....but as a reloaded I think outside of factory options. I would trade the 5.56/.223 for a 300 blackout....BECAUSE....you can buy a bulk of .308 diameter projectiles and load for the 300blk AND the .30-06 sprg, and its the same common AR15 platform.
