    If you are going to install a seal using a socket like that you should use the old seal on top of the new seal as a sacrificial hammering surface. By using the old seal it will allow your hammer blows to be spread out across the outer surface of the seal. This also works really well to install new bearings as well.

    Bill the seal should be driven in from the other side check back on your video and it will become obvious needs to go back in the same side it came out I thought you was driving it in from the wrong side so I checked back on your video hope this makes sense regards Alan push new seal in on the outside edge of the seal

    The seal is pushed out the other way, when you put the new seal in, replace the one C spring and push seal snug against it.

    The PTO shaft in my buddies grandpas International farmall 856 snapped, because his grandpa is old and just pulls the tractor away, and with those he had to park it on a sand mound because the oil comes pouring out when you open it up.

    Invest in a 20 ton press for your little shop. They're about $140 bucks. Love mine for wheel bearings and such.

    That PTO shaft does not run all the time you just have it engaged. That little handle on the left if you throw it towards the front it disengages the PTO. PTO over running coupler is about $60 usd and I would highly recommend getting one. . The overrunning coupler allows you to brush hog without the brush hog pushing the tractor by centrifugal force while you’re trying to stop. Basically just imagine your brush hogging and you want to stop so you press in the clutch but the swinging blades underneath the deck that is still attached directly to the transmission keeps driving the tractor forward, kind of fucking scary.

    Consider investing in a Cordless impact gun for the shed, The bigger ones will give an air impact a good run for their money and you won't need a big air compressor to run it.

    You don't need to remove the PTO shaft to replace the seal all you need to do is use a slide hammer ant the seal will come out and when installing the new one clean up the shaft lube the seal and tap it in .

  • @kejay74
    @kejay74 4 роки тому +1

    Looks like two options for the shaft. 1) Speedy sleeve seal repair. 2) Send to machine shop (i.e. Adam Booth 'ABOM79' or Keith Fenner 'Turn Wright')
    As far as the shaft 'always being in gear', this machine pre-dates the development of "live power" on ag tractors. You will notice that the PTO stops when you push in the clutch and stop, but continues to turn if you are freewheeling (in neutral) down a slope. IF you put something like a brush cutter on the PTO (and has a lot of inertia) you may find that it will drive you right through a fence or ditch if you try to stop by only pushing in the clutch! The inertia will continue to drive the rear end, until energy is expended. BE SAFE!
    In the day, Ford DID sell an 'over-running clutch' for these. It bolted on with the four seal bolts and extended the housing and shaft significantly. So much so that some three point attachments would NOT clear and many PTO driven implements required shortening of their shafts.
    Ken

      I’m not sue if it predates fords live PTO I just don’t think this model has it. This is an 801 model right? If it’s not an 801 I am talking out of my rear end.

      Do you like speedy sleeves? They have gotten me out of a pinch but they seem to only last a few months.
      Calling a machine shop to save that shaft sounds dumb when you can get that shaft built as an assembly for under 200 bucks

    Your PTO shouldn't have to run all the time for the hydraulics. Try lifting the arms with the PTO out of gear. Loving these videos of redoing this old girl. You are doing a great job of refurbishing her!

    • @joedirt9600
      @joedirt9600 3 роки тому

      @@peggychristopherson1863 my 1949 8n is the same , PTO must be engaged to work hydraulic. Not sure if you are aware of this trick. But if you tractor is not running, you can lift the hydraulic, if you have an attachment on, by turning off PTO and rotating the PTO shaft back forth. Works the same principle as a hydraulic jack. Just be AWARE the tractor may roll ahead when you are rotating the PTO shaft.

    I bet it has to be inserted from the other side with a hollow tube to tap the inside of the seal.
    I would put the clip on the outside to stop the seal popping out.
    But im likely wrong as well ha ha :-D

    Next time you have an issue with something, going back together... watch your own video and see how it came out. You are pounding that in from the wrong side. Also Bearings should be pressed in not pounded with a steel hammer. I am sure you know by now that you put the seal in from the other side and then put the retaining clip back in. We're at 38:40 and you are still pounding it in. My guess is the first time you put power to it the seal is going to blow out.
