Believe it or not, the original of "Superstar" isn't by Carpenters. Originally recorded by Delaney and Bonnie. It's on UA-cam and much more blue-eyed bluesy compared to Carpenters' passionate, orchestrated version/arrangement.

I’ve been listening to this masterpiece at least once a day for years. It’s amazing the emotions and tone of the song match the message so perfectly. Especially the sad guitar cord. The deep breath. This is real music. One of the greatest covers and songs of all time.
About seven years ago I went to LA for the sole purpose of seeing a Pearl Jam & Sonic Youth show. The night before that, some friends and I went to a little dive karaoke bar to kill some time, and Kim and Thurston were there. Just singing karaoke, like no big deal. I don't think anyone else there even knew what they were being treated to. It was strange to see them play to a room of people who barely mustered up the strength to do a courtesy applause one night, then the next seeing thousands of people screaming at every little thing they did. But maybe that's what they liked about the bar - Being treated normally. Ahh, so cool. :)
Doing that stuff is probably what keeps them in check, keeps 'em connected , & probably why they have been able to keep making awesome music!! ...also, Let's remember... this L.A. The next shit given will be the first.
This is as beautiful and eerie as the Original, but in a completely SONIC YOUTH way. Remarkable that band could pull off this particular cover in such a weird, sensitive manner. Totally fits. The Carpenters & Sonic Youth: truly creative, original American artists. Bravo!
Not too remarkable to me, I hear something tender, saccharine, bittersweet, under the surface of everything they did, even the most raucous, romping rock. I thinks it's why they get compared to the Velvet Underground a lot, without really sounding LIKE them.
So I love the Carpenters and always saw this song pop up, heard of it but thought it was their original song. This made me cry and gave me chills, lve never experienced a cover like this. His voice, facial expressions, body language, the photos of Karen. Wow.
In the early 90's, this cover was my EVERYTHING. I would repeatedly call into 89X (Windsor/Detroit) to play it for me before I bought the compilation album at Harmony House.
When you're familiar with a song and find out it's actually a cover, listen to the original and go back to it because the cover is not only the song as you know it, not only sounds better for you, it adds this depressing yet soothing atmosphere which fits the song perfectly and makes it a truly enjoyable listening experience.
This is what a "cover" is. Capturing the emotion of the song, emphasizing on the subtle details and transferring it to audience in the best way. From the instruments to Thurston's haunting vocals and back noises, turns this great tune into a modern melancholic masterpiece.
Heard this song around Christmas time in my car, I had to stop and pull over. It was just so beautifully haunting. Rarely do you find a decent cover of a song, but in this case, I can't decide whether I like the original or the cover better. Every now and then the song comes to mind, like now. Still gives me chills.
As much as I adore the Carpenters, I think this cover takes the song to new heights. Sonic Youth gives it a haunting feel, and features more guitar. That said, Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful voices ever -- along with Mama Cass.
My mom used to wake me up to the Carpenter version of this song everyday until I was 12. I like to think that I've found my generation's version of that song. I like how different the two sound, one's so happy and the other's got all that angst of the 90's. I love that conflict, it shows that we're both different but it's okay because in the end we have this one song we can both relate to, that we can both confer our own meaning to.
I just listened to the Carpenters version, and now this. While The Carpenters version is iconic, of course, I actually like this better. It has some very deep pain attached to it. It's visceral.

Bringing in the Carpenter's SUPERSTAR as a cover, WITH A UNIQUE INTERPRETATION... BRILLIANT...THIS time from the point of view of the man...and with that one distinctive, signature guitar chord which made Sonic Youth so very distinctive...incredible!
I have always loved their cover of this song, and am seeing this video for the first time. It is such a beautiful and respectful tribute to Karen. Her loss will always be keenly felt in the music world....
A beautiful cover of a beautiful song, by a beautiful band. All the different versions of "Superstar" are good - the Carpenters' (of course!), Rita Coolidge's (maybe the best), Delaney and Bonnie's - but Sonic Youth's version certainly stands out. You can feel the melancholy in Thurston Moore's voice, and you can imagine he's mourning Karen as he sings. He's certainly honoring her; that's the whole point of the song.
YES! I had heard that of all the songs on "If I were a Carpenter", that Richard Carpenter hated this version. I think he's nuts. It is obvious Sonic Youth LOVES the Carpenters. They treated this song with the utmost in respect and even gave a tip of the hat to Karen's love for the drums by having Kim Gordon playing drums at times during the video. And you really hit the nail on the head about the melancholy in Thurston's voice - THAT makes the song like no other version ever. This is an incredibly touching tribute to the Carpenters.
easily one of the most odd covers i had ever heard. a band as extremely underground as sonic youth doing the carpenters yet prove they can make it just as beautiful in its chaotic presentation.
Kim (and Sonic Youth) as a band are huge fans of the Carpenters - Karen in particular. I think they see parallels between themselves and her personally. Having success but not necessarily wanting it. Being "dressed up" by the music industry and expected only to look and sound a certain way and play the instruments they were told to play the way they were told to play them... It's sad to think that everything but Karen Carpenter killed Karen Carpenter.
You can hear the tension of that concept in the guitars/effects of this version the same way you can hear it in the vocals of the Carpenters' version. It is pretty sinister if you read between the lines.
I read girl in a band by Kim Gordon and she was a huge Karen Carpenter fan growing up. She seemed to pass a lot of that onto her bandmates. When I first heard Sonic youth did a cover of this back in the day I figured Kim would be the one singing it...when I heard it and Thurston starting singing I thought to myself of course Thurston would be the one singing, this band always played against expectations
I didn't know this was a cover the first time I watched it, around 1997, and I loved it. I went to the music stores searching the record that included this one. The only SY record without song titles at the back cover was Sister, so I thought "This Could Be" sadly it wasn't, but then I discovered something even better: the best album I've ever listened.
These days, I can only listen to this version of the song. Whenever I hear The Carpenters original version I tear up because of Karen's voice. I think I can relate a lot to her and how she had a lack of self confidence in her abilities, and her story just breaks my heart. She seemed like such a lovely person, and even though she passed away long before I was even born I still feel such sadness when I hear the original Superstar.
I always admired Karen for doing a cover of this song. So actually, SY is doing a cover of Leon Russell's and Bonnie Bramlett's song. The Carpenters' version was more popular of course. RIP Karen and Leon. Bonnie is 78.

It sounds so sweet and clear
But you're not really there
It's just the radio
Don't you remember you told me you loved me, baby
You said you'd be coming back this way again, baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby
I love you, I really do
[Instrumental Interlude]
Loneliness
Is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait
To be with you again
What to say
To make you come again
Come back to me again
And play your sad guitar
Don't you remember you told me you loved me, baby
You said you'd be coming back this way again, baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby
I love you, I really do
Don't you remember you told me you loved me, baby
You said you'd be coming back this way again, baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby
I love you, I really do
I was always a Sonic fan. I remember hearing this song for the first time and it brought a tear to my eye. Hearing it now still does. Karen Carpenter would've loved it.
A Brazilian explaining the whole ordeal; it's because this song is used at moments in Brazilian UA-cam Poops where a character gets humiliated or sad
Obrigado, I didn't know what everyone was talking about... and I can speak Portuguese from living in Brazil for a few years.

i love all the various versions from the original carpenters to luther vandross to sonic youths. music is so dope and transcends regardless of race.
forever sisters hall that melody at the intro is really something...
race? when that matters?
Oh aye that's dope right enough hen
👍
This cover is so good it elevates both versions.
The 90's were such a special time for music. It's so cool to see that Stoop Kid from 'Hey Arnold' finally left his Stoop to become the vocalist of Sonic Youth. Who's afraid now? Lol;
Nice to see Harry, Ron, Hermoine and Neville found work after they left Hogwarts.

This was a fantastic record. This and the cover of For All We Know by Bettie Serveert are phenomenal.
he was able to perform on his own way and even so made it a classic again!

ogaiht adany thank you for writing out the lyrics. I was just going to search for these lyrics to make sure I heard him correctly. I can barely hear what he singing my volume isn't working well. Cheers

First heard this from skateboarder Jerry Hsu in his "Bag of Suck" video, simply great song choice!
Kkkkk
