I think it's nice how the music this channel uses is actually decent. Unlike most "DIY" UA-camrs I have found, who all use the same generic royalty free music that gets drilled into your skull. This is actually enjoyable, So that's pretty cool.
I know this isn't hard to make, I also know this is technically a Zippo lighter too. However I am extremely intrigued by the way you went about it! Looks great and gave me a great idea!
Zoie Epperson yeah it's not that big of a deal. don't let it stop you from branching out and trying something new. I'm wondering, you could probably make one yourself
I thought it might be possible, if the bottom part was made of a different material, to make a hidden compartment with wick running up from there through the center tube and that way you could have a bigger compartment for lighter fluid and you could even make a little hole in the back to fill that compartment easily
What a beautiful gift this would make; pretty, hand-made, functional. If someone gave this to me on my B'day, I would NOT be upset. Also, a nice project one can do with the children to get them into DIY. Nice vid!
Lovely! Love the minimalist design, but concept could also be adapted to create mini yule log scene--fireplace, stockings, and everything--using fire bricks and fire brick cement to shape scene around that mechanism. So nice! Thanks for sharing. (Will definitely become a paying patron once I'm able!).
Tbh I was not expecting anything near this quality of video. I was expecting some sort of stupid clickbait "diy life hacks" type thing that I was just putting on to pass the time, but this is legitimately awesome. Thanks for the pleasant surprise, I'll be sure to watch more of your videos now that I've found you 😀
very cool, giving me some ideas for a cool table top cigar lighter. The one thing I would be adding though is a piezoelectric igniter and a little more elegant way to close it. great video!
This was one of the most relaxing and educational videos I've seen in a while. Soldering from the inside out, brilliant. Love the pace and music of the video. You are an instructor and didn't say a word. Keep broadcasting!!
Thank you, this was excellent!! Instant like and sub. You just taught me 4 tips/techniques I didn't know, + I loved the final product. While watching I kept thinking Aha! then with the wink I just thought "damn, that shoulda been me!" Genius work, great video, nice to see something self explanatory without all the umms and uuuhs etc. Bioethanol = same fuel for 99% of indoor fireplaces. Safe, clean burning, cheap and long lasting. And mineral wool (not cotton) also great idea! Keep 'em coming!
Dude that was amazing and awesome! I am going to make this for my back yard to use with friends!! Hella smart and innovative!! Post videos like this more and you have a subscriber
Sometimes you come across a channel and it's an instant sub. This is a project that is well within my capabilities but looks so professional when completed. A big one of these for the garden is on the list for projects next year. Thanks for posting. Aaaaannnnndd subbed.
That is really very well done. The only thing I would point out (speaking as someone who made these fires although much larger) is to remind people to let the pipe cool once the flame has gone out before you refill and light it. If you refill it hot or even fairly warm, the alcohol will evaporate and you will get a large bang and flash when you re-ignite it. 10/10 for the design and build though, very impressive .
Doesn't soldering both ends closed means you'll have to destroy the project to change the wicking? Otherwise, that was a brilliant way to make the outside look great without grinding and polishing and a good design overall. Edit: If/when I make this, I think I'd use one or two pieces of the copper sheet you used to make another small pipe fit to the inside of the main one and solder on another sheet for the end, that way you can just get a sort of pressure fit cap on one end that you can remove to change the wicking and clean the mesh as needed.
Well, at 4:50 you can see that he left the mesh holding the cotton open. It may be possible to simply rotate it to the open section whilst still in the copper tube and change it that way.
Not sure it's fiberglass. Fiberglass degrades around 2200 degrees and a lighter can burn up to 4000 degrees so I would think this wouldn't last very long.
make it shorter ... build a rack to hold a griddle over the flame and you can use it on the dinner table to cook dinner .. each person can then cook their own ... like a fondue ...
Great idea for a project. I have an idea to expand on this Idea. Make it bigger with two pipes, the long one in back and a shorter one in front at a lower level. Also make it more rustic looking, like made from steel or aluminum and just screw on pipe caps on the end and you could even knurl the pipes to give it texture. Then stick in it your unused fire place that are in apartments and homes all over. An open flame on your desk is a pipe dream - get it.
well that wink made me flinch for the creapyness lmao. The work though, so simple yet awesome...i also learned two new techniques. Thumbed up your vid and will watch more...i may build this as well.
that's the point of the lighter fluid, so long as the lighter fluid is there, the cotton won't actually burn however, the moment it runs out or gets low, yes the cotton will burn out so if he keeps an eye on it and makes sure it doesn't run out of fluid it'll be all good, that being said I agree with you, it should've been designed to be replaced, just in case and ps I don't know if it's liquid lighter fluid, or coleman camp fuel, etc. but it is certainly a liquid fuel and this will hold true no matter what it is
@@nicolaslehman5934 Not so sure that WAS cotton.. couldn't it have been rock wool? Didn't read the materials list yet, but if it WASN'T rock wool, probably no reason why it COULDN'T be rock wool when you make it..
not cotton .. fiber glass insulation .. and all it is is a flame stop and wicking material ... it keeps the flame from touching the fuel directly and allows the fuel to be drawn to the flame in small amounts to be burnt efficiently .. steel wool works too COURSE as possible .. a good example to look at is the fondue heater ... it is the same idea
I like when he looks up at the camera and Winks. He's so cute. I would love to have someone I could build stuff like this with. It would be so fun. You can't have one of these if you have an animal ...especially a cat . Good job !!!

I’m confused I want to buy this!!! How?
this is a very nice looking and simple fire hazard i love it
@@vanimapermai Ha! but seriously.....
Anyone else think that that was the most ingenious way to solder? Thanks man, great video
It isn't soldering, its called brazing😊
That's standard practice in the industrial world. It does a consistently good job and is easily automated.
@@eduardlake5177 that actually was soldering. And soft soldering at that
I did for sure.
And the way he beveled the downtube was pretty cool too.

@@brucemartin8435 Same fuel as in Zippo lighters i guess?
Probably bio ethanol fuel. zippo stinks.

It's fiber glass it doesn't burn.
Well, at 4:50 you can see that he left the mesh holding the cotton open. It may be possible to simply rotate it to the open section whilst still in the copper tube and change it that way.
I assume this is a fireproof material only here to absorb the alcohol and will not burn
Not sure it's fiberglass. Fiberglass degrades around 2200 degrees and a lighter can burn up to 4000 degrees so I would think this wouldn't last very long.
Arduino Hittme it still needs to be replaced every now and then, just like in a zippo.
Nice job !
Could I build this? Absolutely. Do I have a place for it No. Your work is superb sir I will be sure to follow.
make it shorter ... build a rack to hold a griddle over the flame and you can use it on the dinner table to cook dinner .. each person can then cook their own ... like a fondue ...
Never seen that method of soldering, I like it, very creative
How long does the white stuff inside last before you have to change it out? And what kind of liquid are you using for the flame?
Regular Corning batting, zippo fluid or much cheaper, white kerosene at gas stations 3.50 to $5 a gallon
The "white stuff" is fiberglass wool and it will last almost indefinitely.
The white stuff is simple home insulation and will last a long time since it's just a decorative piece. The fuel is simple camping fuel.
Zippo pretty much
Amazing craftsmanship !!!

that's the point of the lighter fluid, so long as the lighter fluid is there, the cotton won't actually burn
