The question keeps coming up regarding keyboards and I have always heard that Oscar Solis of Los Unicos is credited as introducing the keyboards and synthesizers. First time I heard of Joe and Jimmy was when they were The Belaire Band. Of course, Mazz later popularized keyboards and synthesizers as well as La Mafia.

jlgonz1722 i've always thought it might have been Cali Carranza when he went to the keyboards in the mid-late 70s since he lost the ability to play the accordion to ALS or when Al Chavarria Y Mayo since Mayo mostly used keyboards but it was Mazz that popularized it

Juan Saldana , I have a CD that mentions that Oscar Solis was the one who introduced keyboards and synthesizers to Tejano music.. I saw Los Unicos in concert way before i heard of Cali Carranza and Chato Chavarria y Mayo, in the early 70's and Oscar was surrounded with keyboards, synthesizers and had a black Hohner accordion strapped to his chest and started the song playing the harmonica. I was impressed to see such talent. He now plays with Eddie Perez and the Legends, maybe he could give us some answers. 1st time I saw Cali, he was playing accordion for Los Clasicos back in the mid-70's. There was an article on Tejano music and the author, a professor from Brownsvill made the mistake of crediting Mazz for introducing keyboards to Tejano music. I reached out to him for clarification and he did confirm that it was Oscar Solis that was credited for introducing Keyboards and synthesizers to Tejano music and that Mazz popularized it, he started his e-mail response by saying "I stand corrected, it was Oscar Solis that introduced keyboards and synthesizers to Tejano music." I loved Los Unicos sound back in the early 70's because of the keyboard sound as most of the groups had brass in those years and of course I was a big fan of El Super Grupo Mazz. I remember so much about Tejano music from back in the 70's. Anyway I could go on forever but I appreciate your comments. Thanks! Let's keep the dialogue going. Saludos!

jlgonz1722 all we just need is an official answer and of course hopefully tell everyone and acknowledge solis and sadly I can't really anything when it comes to tejano back in the 70s since i wasn't born or lived there yet, I was born in 99 (sadly), when tejano was started to decline when it came to its popularity outside of Texas (When Duranguense and norteno were getting ready to be recognized tremendously around 2003- 04' replacing the Grupero/Tejano sound) but it doesn't hurt listening to the good old classics that feature a keyboard, accordion or any instrument when it comes to tejano. It'll be an honor to meet Oscar Solis someday and of course congratulating him for being the main pioneer to bring the keyboards and synthesizers to tejano but that would mean leaving NC since i wasn't even born in TX hehe but dang i've been introduce to tejano music when i was 9 or 10 all thanks to songs "No Te Olvidare" "Dejame Solo" "Hoy" "Amor Con Amor" all by mazz of course expanding my tastes to Laura Canales, TUFF band, Fandango USA, Los Fab 4, Gary Hobbs, David Lee Garza, etc. and i have no regrets to listening to tejano music, though i wish to learn more from this unique, great sound i'd like to participate some day. Thank you for your amazing, informative reply and Saludos from North Carolina!!

well the good thing is. tejano music is not dead yet. with the time when selena died Tejano music music had stoped on the radio we heard norteno music..i was like crazy trying to find tejano music for me to listen to so i was buying cd and tapes. i think jimmy gonzales put the restart into tejano music . and of course the other tejano artists joined in to. tejano music to me is the heart and soul of our mexican american culture its music to listen to and dance to .

man, whatever happened to the big split up of Mazz back in 82 when 3 or 4 of the members went to create The Force?

Mazz might not have been the first tejano band to use the keyboards, the jury is still out on who was the first, but what Mazz did was make the keyboards as their centerpiece instead of just part of the musical instruments, that's why any tejano music DJ worth it's salt will create great Mazz mixes, and one of the best mixes I ever heard were created by Paul Garza from BNet Radio, tejanos in uniform stationed in Afhganistan would wait hours just to hear Paul Garza's Mazz mixes when he was on the air
