Rich Swann did it with Neville, for example, and it gave him a spark of personality that had been missing before then.

He's not a totally good guy, but he's probably one of the most nuanced and real characters they have. He's evolved over time to show more personality that doesn't involve leering and growling, but when it comes to his storylines and the mannerisms, it's clear that Rusev truly believes himself to be the hero of his own story. Rusev isn't a bad guy who knows he's a bad guy and doesn't care - everyone turned on him first and he's having to live with that.

Not sure The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin should be on this list. Both were never really faces, or even tweeners. Their characters were established with defining traits that made them impossible to classify, but they most definitely were never faces. Were they popular? Absolutely. But that doesn't make them faces. SCSA was anti-hero symbolizing the everyday working man's rebellion against authority and anyone who got in his way. That endeared him to fans but in the end he was a fucking brutal beast who had a vicious temper and zero empathy. Fans didn't care because they saw him as their dream of telling an authority figure to go fuck themselves before stomping the shit out of them and then popping a beer after a hard day's work. The Rock was a narcissistic egomaniac of the highest caliber who backed up what he said with an overabundance of charisma, confidence, and the ability to kick your ass. As a viewer you always knew that even if the Rock was doing something noble he would still conduct himself in an infuriatingly arrogant manner that hilariously rubbed everyone around him the wrong way. He was the Muhammad Ali of wrestling. No matter how you felt about him as a person you couldn't help but be impressed at how brutally efficient he was destroying opponents on the mic or in the ring.

Not sure The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin should be on this list. Both were never really faces, or even tweeners. Their characters were established with defining traits that made them impossible to classify, but they most definitely were never faces.
Were they popular? Absolutely. But that doesn't make them faces.
SCSA was anti-hero symbolizing the everyday working man's rebellion against authority and anyone who got in his way. That endeared him to fans but in the end he was a fucking brutal beast who had a vicious temper and zero empathy. Fans didn't care because they saw him as their dream of telling an authority figure to go fuck themselves before stomping the shit out of them and then popping a beer after a hard day's work.
The Rock was a narcissistic egomaniac of the highest caliber who backed up what he said with an overabundance of charisma, confidence, and the ability to kick your ass. As a viewer you always knew that even if the Rock was doing something noble he would still conduct himself in an infuriatingly arrogant manner that hilariously rubbed everyone around him the wrong way. He was the Muhammad Ali of wrestling. No matter how you felt about him as a person you couldn't help but be impressed at how brutally efficient he was destroying opponents on the mic or in the ring.
Plus, it was the Attitude Era. Fans in that era didn't want to cheer for anyone with the wholesome goody two shoes All American babyface image.
