In the U.S., it’s estimated to be around 25-50 at any given time, and there’s obviously quite a few other other cases still open globally as well... so statistically pretty low, but still crazy to think about.

The true number of serial killers is a lot bigger then that. The population is so much larger then the general statistics show, the lie of how many are out there at a given moment helps civilians sleep better at night

More than enough, I'm sure, and plenty more wannabes. But technology has advanced to the degree it is next to impossible to go on and on like they used to without getting caught, at least in this country. I have wondered if this is why mass shootings are so much more popular with the latest generation of twisted psychos; one of the mass shooters--I forget which--said he considering serial killing before his rampage, but figured it was too easy to get caught.

Tracy absolutely wanted help and told the police what happened. They didn’t believe him at first and made him go back up alone to have Dahmer take the cuffs off. Tracy even had a lawsuit against the police for how inappropriate they were toward him. He and his attorney spoke about the terrible job the police did on the Geraldo show. If Tracy were drugged to the point of the child who the police sent back, Dahmer would still be free.

He became aware once he brought him back to the apartment again and began to speak? Ugh. How awful. I'd hope that if I were ever found in the streets unable to speak that the cops wouldn't just hand me off to any person that walked up and said they knew me. I wonder why the cops were so intent on letting Dahmer have that poor kid? Even later the lady that found him calls 911 and she says that she had seen him playing in the street digging up earthworms so she really doubted he was of age and the officer that answered the phone is so terse and short with her and insists he isnt a minor. It's really unfortunate they didn't care.

Honestly this documentary lacks a bit in information and details, and there are a few errors in the information as well..
Just to name a "few" things:
    1. When he was very young his mother was struggling with depression and tried to commit suicide while his father was mostly absent because of work.
    2. His father was a research chemist and they would actually as a father-son thing (believe it or not) find roadkills and dissect and dissolve them in chemicals together as practice out of an interest for science.
    3. He wasn't totally alone in school. Yes, he was picked on a bit, but he actually did these pranks in high school where he would pretend to have seizures and such, and it actually caused some of the other students to make "The Dahmer fan club" because they found him funny.
    4. His first fantasies about killing someone started when he frequently drove by a jogger that he found attractive. He even hid in the bushes with a baseball bat waiting for the jogger, but the jogger didn't do his usual jog that day which actually saved his life.
    5. The hiker he picked up was straight. He was first invited over for drinks (and weed if I remember correctly) and were talking a lot about girls. They NEVER had sex.
    6. When he was in the army, he was accused by two other soldiers who claimed he had raped them.
    7. When he was living with his grandmother, she actually found a mannequin that Jeff had stolen from a local store in one of his closets. He had used this for sexual stimulus.
    8. He almost killed 4 instead of 3 at his grandmother's house. His grandmother called for him and he realized that she had probably seen his guest. He drugged the guest and dropped him of at a hospital.
    9. He actually fucked up once and drank some alcohol that he had "spiked" and ended up falling asleep. The victim actually robbed Jeff before taking off while Jeff was still passed out.
    10. While eating some of the victims, he would have a picture of them to look at during his meal.
    11. He didn't get a lawyer for his interrogations, and during the trial he was diagnosed with borderline and schizotypal personality disorders and a psychotic disorder.
    12. In prison he would keep his sense of humor. He would tell guards "I bite" just to see their reactions. He would also shape some of his meals into looking like human limbs, cover them with ketchup to imitate blood and hide it around the prison for other inmates to find.

Actually there's nothing to be guilty of in being interested by serial killers, they are almost like circus freaks now, their stories promoted and romanticized in the media. Which I'm not really complaining about, but that just goes to show how anything can be turned into entertainment for profit. But it's interesting to try to understand the psychology of a particular killer, that's what police does too - making a psychological profile of the offender that is particularly difficult to catch, they've done it with Chikatilo in the USSR and the profile was surprisingly very accurate

He was a con's man con man... handling a conversation with him would not have been easy unless you were willing to be mind bent . Even very professional / educated law enforcement ( FBI ) and journalists found Manson to be difficult in one on one conversations ; he would go off on rants or tandems about topics that had little or nothing to do with their questions . There are a lot of very important things left out of Dahmer's story and you have to wonder why . Like the account of Dahmer's hospital stay as a young child where he said " Doctors " repeatedly stuck needles into his scrotum . They also failed to report that when he was in Germany as a soldier he repeatedly attacked his roommate and the roommate was forced to jump out of high window ro escape him . Later after nothing was done by the Army Dahmer was visited by two men in suits for several hours...and then they just left . Listen to the interview of Kay Griggs and all she has to say about Dahmer and some others . She is from a long line of Navy officers and her interview is incredible and fascinating . I want it clear I am not sympathizing with Dahmer...but add what has been said about people around him and the story left out is FAR from being told here .

I’ve heard of Jeffrey Dahmers name but I never knew the person he was or what he did. I am a woman and am still very confused. I assume an insult? It was very unsettling and sudden. He’s quiet, and comes in late with red-shot, tried eyes, everyday and just sits with his head down. That day, he switched seats to beside me, which was likely because of what I assume is his friend that he wanted to talk to. They talked and laughed but eventually stopped talking. He only just asks me for clarification on work, then says, “Jeffrey Dahmer would kill you” something very similar along the lines of that. Freaked me out.
