Terrifying stories. I do feel that with the cave story in Tenerife there is a degree of responsibility on those who entered willingly, considering they were all adults. However, very strange that a guide would simply tell them which way to go and fail to warn of the dangers. I mean, anyone not respecting a 1 mile hole in the ground is open to its wrath.
Great content - never heard these ones before :)

fully agree with the Tenerife part
though, the guide who did an over-the-phone guide should have been held responsible to a degree, I do not really see it being any part of the provincial governments fault, it is not like this is an attraction theme park they had created, nor did they popularize it... the tourists have reasonable freedom to risk their lives, which is something they did fairly flagrantly here... in the end, the end they met is upon their heads...

The guide should never have given them the slightest notion that they could handle it alone... At the same time, ANYONE who's ever even talked about going to explore a volcanic cave system is warned to bring stuff like gas meters and emergency air bottles... There ARE "egress" bottles that work relatively like miniature scuba tanks, slightly hybridized with an aerosol can. They can be carried by caribiner on a belt and have up to 45 minutes of "supplemental air", meaning you CAN use it where the air is toxic and shut it off where it's clear enough to breathe to get out... I was even trained to use them by the U.S. Navy in the 90's, so I KNOW for a fact, they were around a lot earlier than that...
You NEVER go caving alone, nor without someone who knows about the cave's locale, and "usual hazards"... AND YOU ALWAYS HAVE A PHYSICAL MAP! That also means you better know how to read such a map... This is beyond the usual "minimums" people preach about like the three (3) KNOWN GOOD light sources, appropriate clothing and pads (knee and elbow) and hard hat or similar head protection. You WILL bang your head in a cave... not an "if" but a "when"... AND of course, GOOD footwear for hiking and climbing and scrambling over crap... You're GOING to get wet, GOING to be muddy and mucky (yes, there's a difference and no, you probably don't want to know)... ALL of this along with whatever gear or kit or equipment you have in mind for whatever reason you're exploring or sight seeing in the first place (like cameras, ropes, climbing gear, measuring equipment, sample bottles or jars, testing kits, and record keeping material or whatever)...
Not to overtly "victim blame" here, but for the operative lesson, "DO NOT EVER let your caving adventure guide just phone it in." The son of a bitch signed on to lead your expedition, so make him lead it or give back your money and CALL IT OFF.
Look, I've BEEN places with less foot traffic than the back side of the moon. I've put my name in the credits of maps that are CURRENTLY used by rescuers to find the odd lost splonker or idjit teenager looking for a misadventure and a quiet spot to make out or whatnot else... I've been more than reasonably safe the entire time, and even the one or two times I've been stuck, were "self rescue" situations... The worst of which I had to lay as still as I could and wait until the "gang" got back with enough rope to get extra hands on me and yank me free. It was more embarrassing than scary even... and my light went out for a good chunk of the hours I waited, because the rope was in CAMP and my pack with my batteries and spare lights was just out of my reach at the time... FUN...
Sh*t happens EVERYWHERE... Nothing worth doing is easy or particularly safe. Even sitting there with your art is a risk of ridicule and humiliation, self loathing, depression, and self destruction. Whatever you do, there are good ways to do it, and sh*tty ways to die because of it. Use that and choose as you will. ;o)

The cave without any of the dangers was mentioned on brochures and the cancelled cave guide texted the route, which lead to the tourists thinking it was safe, obviously common sense should still apply, but in EUROPE it's standard to mark dangerous areas with signs and dangerous caves are supposed to be walled off and locked with a key so that only people with access can actually explore.
Also the 1 million euros wasn't as far as I know paid to the people that were injured, but was paid to make sure this wouldn't happen again.

Idk much about bull sharks aside from their aggression, but I am familiar with another large species, the Galapagos sharks. I have swam with them several times in pelagic free dives in Hawaii. They are a docile schooling species up to 12 ft long, basically they swim together when not eating. In a different country there was an incident where a Galapagos shark school was turned into some kind of tourist attraction, and something happened. One woman was injured or bitten, and the amount of blood caused the others nearby to also attack. It became a feeding frenzy instantly. The woman died. So my thought is, if the first bull shark severed the femoral artery you'd basically have a huge amount of blood instantly in the water. The second bull shark would have immediately been attracted if they were anywhere nearby. Especially add in he was probably thrashing around fighting for his life, looking even more like prey at this point. The first shark may have realized that it bit a human (we don't have nearly enough fat to be palatable) and was no longer interested in him (or at least didn't want to risk being injured and was waiting till he died from blood loss) but the second shark wanted to check him out too... And unfortunately just the first bite itself would have been fatal without a tourniquet being applied within minutes.

I worked on natural gas wells on a special type or service rig all around Western-Canada (stand-alone snubbing).
I know and have seen the devistation the gases and pressures cause at surface. There's NO way I would go in a cave system like that. They should have known better.
I mean, if roughnecks know this, why the hell didn't one scientist think about this. Especially when people started going down.

hull was a timber town for a long time, filling the ottawa river with raftsmen/log drivers, so tons of people probably drowned in the cold waters. might be one of the reasons why those old factory buildings feel so haunted

My cousin went on a trip to surf the black sand beaches of Costa Rica. While paddling out he was attacked by a tiger shark and somehow fought him off w/o losing a limb; his gaping wound on his leg required a shit ton of stitches tho. Supposedly the shark mistook him for a seal but that’s clearly not *always* the case with those crazies.

Tiger sharks are opportunistic ambush hunters, if you allow them to sneak up on you (which is easy unless you're snorkeling or diving) they are much more likely to try something, especially if they are starving or otherwise ill or injured. The oceans collapse of the fish food chains affects sharks greatly. And we will see sharks become more and more desperate as their normal prey literally are being fished to extinction by humans
