I've purchased a fair number of IP cameras over the years and have yet to land one that "checks all the boxes." Glad to see you've added them to your reviews.

1) 12 Volts figure-8 power cable is easy to cut, insert extensions (with or without soldering). Solves the short cable problem; & its only low-amp, low volt power, easily fitting in small holes, etc. 2) Same with the wifi antenna. Buy an antenna extension lead, plus a longer, more powerful antenna. Place the antenna where it easily get the best transmission point. Use a directional antenna if needed. 3) Waterproof by coating all cracks, joints with soft silicon plastic. 4) Camouflage setup by spray-painting, or color-nail-polishing all/ parts of the complete setup. 5) Have a dummy surveillance camera in obvious view to outsiders, but in view of the real camera. 6) Use an external 12volt power supply, wired to the real camera. This may or may not be mains powered. 7) Use ancillary, extra infrared lighting in parts of the view that needs extra lights.
This looks like great value for money. Interesting to see how the IR performed, I've ordered an IR illuminator to combine with my IR sensing bullet camera this weekend. I don't know how it will perform but it has many more LEDs than the camera so I'm quite confident that it will work well. I may attempt a review of the kit combination myself.
Fantastic video. I'm not in the faintest bit interested by IP cameras but I was still entertained for the duration of the video. Well done and thank you.
The Foscam outdoor cameras have a similar lead arrangement. Once I'd configured it for wireless I simply opened the back up and put all the cables inside (was lots of room) and ran my own power cable through the same hole for the cable and plugged it inside (to clarify I removed the existing cable (unplugged from inside and could just about thread the internal connector through the cable hole, reconnected it and ran a new cable inside through the hole to plug in again -if that makes sense :p )
I love the explanation in the night shot that the white dots are rain, but would it be useful to explain what rain is for those not living in the UK !!!
Just bought this from Amazon. It has a different cable setup now, just a single miniUSB power connector, no ethernet connection required, This is a lot simpler, less cabling to deal with, but there's still an connection to be made about 20cm from the camera. The instructions are quite confusing, different instructions available in different places, but got it running eventually, works well.
What's the point of having a camera running 24/7 that doesn't record? I can't think of a single use for this, unless you go on the app one day when you're out and you happen to be being burgled and you can then record...
Dan Woodward I was replying to first post. As I said, normally network cameras must stream the video to special recording device or at least sd card. And what was that pedro for?
Could we have a new review of current security cameras? Our gate is 50 meters away from the house and we'd like to see who is in front of it - combinations with an 8 bell also speaking and hearing system...?? Thank you!
Very well demonstrated presentation of all the setting up of zmodo wireless camera. Including all the observations of the quirky niggles of the short cumming s of the supplied instruction sheet. Thanks for the info, now got mine installed fully.
Great review tho lacking compared to the others u have done. Would have been nice to see some video with movement in it to get an idea of how well it is or isn't. No mention of is the video can save to a network storage? How much delay is there from movement from real time? You say the IR is invisible to the naked eye are you saying they don't turn red at night like other night time cameras that use IR?
Power is always a challenge. I use a small plastic utility box to house the connections and waterproof the system. Advise you first check WiFi connection before installing. My WiFi router can't reach some of the cameras outside the house. Limited use but 1-2 might be practical inside your house of business.
I modified my IP cam (not quite the same as this one, mostly cos it's wired and pretty much a completely different camera!!) by lopping off the bulky connector (mine thankfully had a foot-long cable before the bundle of mess), mapping out the wires (Tx & Rx + & -, Power (Cam), Power (IR LEDs) and flashing status LEDs which were pointless so left them out) and snapping on an RJ45 plug after passing it through my doorframe, then connected that to a coupler then to a Cat5E cable and using a PoE injector I sent power up to it with the wallwart set away from where the camera is sited and hooked it up to a roooooter and it works great... :)
Hey Techmoan, you should look at the hikvision cameras, specifically the DS-2cd2032-i. They record up to 3mp and cost around $100. Its not wireless, but you can connect a ethernet cable and use POE so it only uses one wire to connect to the camera. Night vision with its IR is pretty poor though, the IR leds on them are only good up to 10 yards.
Can you rewind to get footage that you did not record while in process? I'm guessing you have to always be recording and only saving the footage if/when necessary, is this how you would go about having footage in the case an event did happen and you needed the footage for a case or investigation? Thank you for your video and assistance.
Hi. I wanna thank you sincerely for this fantastic well explained video tutorial. I was wondering why my camera wouldn't capte WIFI. I plugged it on the Ethernet as explained and then unplugged as mentioned in the notice. But then I was waiting for my camera to be connected to WIFI, OFFLINE and it didn't connect.. Here is the truth and verdict after waching your video... I didn't go to my WIFI SETTINGS and the problem lay there. So I set my camera to WIFI SETTINGS and by MAGIC my camera read ONLINE. I almost eturned this excellent camera through "ignorance" this afternoon, lucky I was tired. I am so proud of you that you helped me keep this camera. I have the same brand for indoors and it worked so well but I didn 't have to connect it to the Ethernet, it got connected to WIFI immediately. I thought by already installing a camera there was sufficient information and I didn't need to re-connect to WIFI. You are such a blessing to me. Thanks for making me smile and thanks for sharing and caring xxx
Frankie Gonzalez Says the person watching a outdoor cam review on a camera/audio equip geek channel... But yeah, that is actually mildly interessting, i guess i do care
xVisuaLxEffects I didn't think that it might be a UK colloquialism - but now you mention it, I can't say I recall anyone from the US saying it on a TV show.
Over here, it has prompted either subtle eyebrow shifts, or the other person actually repeating the word back to me inquisitively during conversation. Odd how geography makes such a difference. Thanks for your response!
Can you drop the IP into third party software to grab the video feed like "dumber" ones without an app? I'm also wondering if you can just put the IP in a browser to get a video feed/interface? Great video though I did not know there were wifi IP cameras this cheap that worked well outside of axis or other expensive brands.
Hi. I would like to ask whether there is a way to mount the camera onto wall without screws, like some sticky magnetic mount or something? Or if there is very similar model to this that has those magnetic mounts instead of having to screw it into the wall or something? Thanks. Nice video.
Just bought one, but was a bit confused, Primarily I am interested in the take still images when camera detects motion function. Does this have to be set up via PC? I notice the android app stores some still images on the phone when motion is detected. Does the PC app need to be running all the time or after the setting up would it work just fine without? Also as mentioned I have no access to shared apartment complex router for setup, but do have an old wireless router lieing around. Is it possible to connect to this offline router and the phone to the routers wireless just to turn on the cameras wireless, from there connect the camera to the third party wifi network and then the phone also? Thanks in advance! Great videos!
In our place remote area where thunder and lighting are frequent. Every time the thunder or lighting flashed these considered motion. It means I received email or text messages alert.
I have a different use in mind. Do you think it would work to video amateur indoor sporting events to then put on my website for replaying if people couldn't make the match? (would use 2 cameras). What would you suggest to use to store the video on for this use? I think you do a great job of reviewing products and give a fair evaluation
Can you get this to work to a computer instead of a cell phone? That is, can I have a computer on my wireless network that is running an app or something that is listening for the cameras to store incoming video to be able to review at the end of the day?
Best Teachmoan, The windows software is NOT ESSENTIAL to set time and date things. You can look up the ip of the camera and when you put that in your browser, you will get the same settings, preview etc..
I have this camera but having problems setting up to change the time, date etc. Have downloaded the IPC Search tool softare but not letting me change anything. how to make this work please, do i have to connect the camera back to the router to do this ?
Hmm looks to be good value for money, ok you may have as you said sort out wiring a bit depending on where your going to install the Camera, as usual a good demo, nice video
Really like this informative video. Router . . . Rooter . . . explanation is perfect and I agree English in America is confusing sometimes. The rest is "very well done" . . . . (Please use a British Accent). Consider me a regular user when I need any tech info. "Thanks again" (In American English here).
This is an outdoor device, routers are placed inside so its easy to run power to it. The point of making a wireless camera is not to have wires running to it.What if you live in an apartment complex and your apartment is in the middle of the complex but you have to set up a camera outside to oversee the parking lot?. Run power from a different apartment?.
Techmoan, so how do you record what the camera is seeing? One way is through your phone, yes, but you can play it via your computer and record it straight into your computer?
Does anyone happen to know wether the camera would require some sort of indoor wifi, like an indoor wifi router,or does it have some sort of built in wifi capabiliy? Thanks.
Can I access this camera from my phone through the internet, if the camera is connected to a wifi router, which after that is connected to another router and so on, several hops to the real IP address... which means port forwarding is not an option....?May be I should search for a cloud camera, or configure FTP/e-mail alerts?
You were connected to your home wifi when you did this demonstration. What happens when you connect to a 3G or 4G network with your smartphone? How about a PC? Can you access this through the Internet? Last, why don't you have a storage or NVR device attached?
I experienced problems with the connectors. It seems to me that these are not build for outdoor use. Did wrap the connectors up with some plastic, but still got moisty and broke. After 6 months of use (camera itself is great) i can't use it anymore:(
If the input is 12v, can I just use a spare car/lawn battery? That way I won't need any cords. I won't to use this to my computer and windows 7 to watch critters out in my yard. Don't care if it doesn't store video or picture, just want to see what is going on while I'm watching on my computer. Thanks.
Is it able use FTP for motion detection alerts? I would have liked to see how well it supports ONVIF by using it with an open source ONVIF client such as "ONVIF Device Manager". I only buy cameras that support ONVIF because I don't want to be dependent on rubbish and proprietary Chinese software and sometimes intermediate servers that they connect to (and do who knows what with your data). Another important thing to consider, is can the WIFI key be retrieved if the thing is stolen.
So I am wondering if something like this would work well as a webcam? I have always wanted to hook up a webcam in the ceiling of my room to record videos and stream with and also be able to show my desk/studio area from above but I have always ran into the problem of having a webcams that run short on wire and when I connect them through an extender, they either don't work or work but with a VERY lower quality than when it was plugged directly in the PC.
With WIFI or an ethernet cable, it should work. USB cables do not work well when they are too long: I've had that problem with all kinds of USB devices connected to extension cables. I have an Ethernet cable that is 30m long and it works perfectly, so I would expect that to work for you too. WIFI is also an option, but it depends on how the signal is in your house, and having this camera hogging your WIFI network could reduce the performance of other WIFI devices in your house.
Another great review served "dry". I had an external Foscam clone and the motion detection combined with a narrow field of view was completely useless, email arrives showing the scene a couple of seconds after the trigger has left the view, there is little more annoying than knowing something has happened in front of a security camera but not getting a clue what. Email triggers should be fast, send the email out quickly and get back to motion detection, the worst are slow to respond, hang while sending and won't send another email quickly. Would be good to test those triggers before trusting they work in real life, I.E. move quickly past the camera at night.
Should have used a junction box mounted next to the camera on the outside of the house. Available at screwfix for a few pound, need glands to run the cable through to keep watertight. Great vid tho.
How do you ground a outdoor cctv camera? Please show pictures, I've heard of it but never seen someone ground a outdoor security camera. I'm starting to think it is not worth it.
Hi Techmoan, Please help! Someone is vandalizing my car. It is outside my kitchen window but they do this at night. Would this be your best recommendation? I need a camera that has good night vision, records motion, and preferably one that connects to my smart phone but I don't have to have that. I just basically need something that is not too expensive and I can see my vehicle and record malicious activity.
so on a cam like this i can just plug into wall outlet and no ethernet cable just using the wifi to link cam? or do i still need to plug in wall and use ethernet?
i bought myself an ip camera,i got it up and running but don`t know how to set it up to record all the time, it only records for 120 mins, could you give me some advice how to set it up please, regards digger
any update to this mate as lots of break ins round here and im after a budget system thats got ok video quality? or buy a good nvr box with 8 inputs and buy a camera one by one as budget allows?
hi buddy brilliant video i know it's 2016 now i have had the motorola focus 66 for a month or so now i am big on home security as my ex left me lol and having problems people coming to the door. and my main complaint are delay for the intercom even in 720p picture quality very pixilated. and the hubble app is awful on iPhone any buying tips i have £100 left to cover the front and back of the house and need to be able to record constantly at night etc please help :)
a little something that i learned................ get some of those little solar powered leds lights and place then where the camera does not see so well. a led puts out an amazing amount of light, visible and non visible. dont believe me? take your tv or whatever remote and go outside and point it at your camera standing about 30 feet away. go inside and look at the recording, you will be able to see the individual pulses from that distance and greater even. the little solar powered lights act like almost range extenders for the night vision while adding a little bit of visible light
Apologies, but while I'm here, can you elaborate on the settings options where I noticed a possible movement detection 'recording' option. You spoke about a still pic snapshot 'alarm' email facility - but can it also send a recorded clip, albeit 5 or 10 seconds long? Equally, it would be helpful to know how to record and store 'movement activated' footage out with the alarm facility. Regards, Denis. I'm quite keen to buy this camera but have already wasted money on a couple of wireless lemons so far. Im looking for something that will provide an easy 'movement activity recording' set up to my tablet or laptop.
Denis Law sorry but I don't know. I've forgotten about this camera now. I only really remember each device for a few days following the review after that they all merge into one. I have a terrible memory.
Hi wonder if someone can help can this camera be hardwired to the mains of household power as I’m going to put it outside and the cable supplied isn’t long enough
Note about buying this Zmodo camera - It appears this is a slightly older model and the camera has been remodelled recently with a new case and mount - the ebay links in the description (click Show More) will probably bring up details of the newer model instead.
Two things to mention to anyone going to ask a predictably silly question (The people who ask about these things definitely won't be reading this).
1)The app will work over the 3G/4G network (as well as WiFi) and I tested this out by viewing my empty back garden whilst sitting at my desk at work 30 miles away.

Seems a squarer case. Still that short bulky lead though, strange they made it way.
i wonder how much influence you carry in the cheap camera market.
fredintheshed1 A long power lead that plugs into the camera itself and an RJ45 socket under a waterproof cover would make a lot more sense to me.
The new model APPEARS to have a shorter stem on the mount which could help overcome the short cables.
Those frame freezes used in editing are annoying!
I've purchased a fair number of IP cameras over the years and have yet to land one that "checks all the boxes." Glad to see you've added them to your reviews.
A good feature to have on these would be to start recording as soon as it detects motion

Short wire with that mess outside is a deal breaker
Thank you for showing to use

A cut into segments bicycle tube, a bit of caulking, and a couple of zip ties work well for waterproofing a wire harness like that.

Was looking for an inexpensive camera for my front porch. After watching your review and doing some research, I"m going with the Zmodo! Thanks!
Thank god for the professional thumbs up decal. If it had not come with this- it would suck.

Oh something I ve been thinking about, cheers Matt. Happy New Year.
That spaghetti junction wiring from the rear of the camera no doubt took years of hard work and research to come up with.
Nice video as always. Loved your "root" 66, route 66 tantrum.
Is it weird that I live in Georgia, USA, and "fiddly" has now become part of my regular vocabulary? Thanks, Matt.

can you recorded online for 24/7 on what storage is it recorded on email or USB or another storage.can be automatically recording?
Hmmmmm.... A wireless camera that needs wires! An interesting concept.
+ComPrt3 - next you'll be telling me your wireless router needs plugging in.
+Techmoan Its been known to happen. . . . . . From time to time. . . . .

AFAIC your pronunciation of router is the correct one since that's how we pronounce it in french and router is a french word
I say these because when there are thunder and lighting the car alarm also activated the same procedure with the IP camera
Just bought this on your recommendation everything is working but Wi-Fi setting is greyed out! what am I missing?
Can you connect it to a DVR and manage the camera centrally?
I wonder what resolution the camera shoots in when it's in the LD mode?
Can,you do a review of the, vivitar action camera range
does the app use a cloud service or connect directly to the camera?
Hey I'm thinking of buying one and I was wondering if it takes a lot of wifi to make the cameras run
You should really be able to modify date and time on app, and set it to a white text on black background.
It does not need a network cable all the time?
how do you get your internet router to the outdoor camera?
I have the same question
Should have used a junction box mounted next to the camera on the outside of the house.
Available at screwfix for a few pound, need glands to run the cable through to keep watertight.
Great vid tho.
Hi , Know s.d. card, so if you say save it your I phone, how do you then save it to an s.d. Card. ( never done this sort of thing before. ) .
How do you ground a outdoor cctv camera?
Please show pictures, I've heard of it but never seen someone ground a outdoor security camera. I'm starting to think it is not worth it.
What's the night vision look like!? And how much?!
Can you tell me what wiring to get for set please . Thanks
HI- Please, this ip camera it works with a Public IP Address? . If you have solution. Thanks so much.
Are you planning to review the SJ5000+ ??
Is there any way to record movie for a period of time automatically?
Really good review. Very informative and nicely done.
For those of you who don't know:-
12:03 59 pounds = 26761.9 grams.
Anyone know the details on the SD card model? and can you access IP cameras on 3G when not connected to the same wifi network?
so on a cam like this i can just plug into wall outlet and no ethernet cable just using the wifi to link cam? or do i still need to plug in wall and use ethernet?
can you place the camera at least 50 feet away from the router?
Some kind of two-tone blue dialed Submariner-style watch shows at 2:18, then the Seiko diver at 4:05.
i bought myself an ip camera,i got it up and running but don`t know how to set it up to record all the time, it only records for 120 mins, could you give me some advice how to set it up please, regards digger

and my main complaint are
delay for the intercom
even in 720p picture quality very pixilated.
and the hubble app is awful on iPhone
any buying tips i have £100 left to cover the front and back of the house and need to be able to record constantly at night etc please help :)
You ought to check out the ESCAM Brick QD900. A bloody good camera for £29!
Do they have one of these cameras with an sd card slot ?
a little something that i learned................
get some of those little solar powered leds lights and place then where the camera does not see so well. a led puts out an amazing amount of light, visible and non visible. dont believe me? take your tv or whatever remote and go outside and point it at your camera standing about 30 feet away. go inside and look at the recording, you will be able to see the individual pulses from that distance and greater even. the little solar powered lights act like almost range extenders for the night vision while adding a little bit of visible light
Great rewiew can you test dvr cctv system? in the future
Good review. Shame about the ridiculously short cables, that almost guarantees water ingress eventually.
Can you connect multiple cameras with the same app
It would be helpful if you told us how much it cost and where you got it from.
Denis Law this is in the video and the purchasing links are in the video description.
Bought these, but seems my Wi-Fi isn't strong enough to work any suggestions?
Hi wonder if someone can help can this camera be hardwired to the mains of household power as I’m going to put it outside and the cable supplied isn’t long enough
I have a monator. do I need to use the internet to be able to use camera remotely?
