I was told that the Rakiura tokoeka (Stewart Island Kiwi) tends to stay up quiet long in the morning hours. Sometimes even during the day to grab a quick snack or something. :D

The Kiwi's nostrils are at the tip of it's beak (the only bird to have this feature) allowing it to smell underground. You can here them blowing air through them to clean out the dirt...

if you look into their bone structure you can see tiny vestigial wing bones that are unused, it was probably easier for them to stop having wings than to develop arms

Crikey that is amazing footage. Never seen the beak cleaning before and what is this Kiwi doing in day light or is it very early morning? Are Kiwi naturally nocturnal or have they had to adapt with the introduced predators?

they are still nocturnal animals... But from what I heard they (the Kiwis from Stewart Island) just tend to be active at daytime as well.. Just like we humans sometimes get a midnight snack. ;D
By the way this was recorded at 5-6 o clock in the morning.
Stuart Island and Southland beaches, the Southern brown kiwi can be found out in the morning in summer. This is due to our short night hours so the need to stay out to feed more. It is the only kiwi that seems to do this.

It appears I had a stroke writing this 2 years ago. Here's an update. I now have a dedicated corner of my room to the kiwi bird which includes: a framed picture, 2 pillows with a kiwi bird on and my room is painted the colour "kiwi crush". There's also some other things around to give my room a jungle theme like bamboo wall paper and a massive metallic lizards and ladybugs on my walls.
