- Join me for a wander around the small room I call a workshop as we look at current commissions, layout builds and my bench - whilst thinking about the approach to the hobby and mindfulness in our own lives.
As always James, your work is inspirational and thanks for sharing it
My pleasure Phil! I’ve not forgotten your wagon project, I am trying to finish off a few things and I’ll be in touch.
Thank you for sharing James. I enjoyed the tour of the various layouts
Glad you enjoyed it
I always enjoy a workshop tour and feel grateful to be allowed into a personal space, so many thanks for sharing.
During this visit I was particularly intrigued by the small HO Euro layout and did go on to watch the Mindful Shunting episode before returning here to comment.
I have a couple of DR locos, around a dozen wagons with no real intention to expand the roster.
When thinking about a layout I was pretty much stuck on the standard Inglenook idea despite musing a similar switchback plan a while back as I wanted my locos to travel to both ends of the layout rather than operate from one end only.
I'm happy to shuffle a few wagons around for pleasure and think that a simple layout like this could fulfil that role - I have all the bits in stock so maybe I should set aside some 1:1 planning time this coming weekend for a 'free' layout project 🙂
Sounds like a great idea! I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and it’s given you some ideas - I’m happy to welcome you all here.
Thanks for sharing James.
My pleasure
Just come across your channel, you have some great projects there and a great workshop, looking forward to seeing more videos. Tom
Thanks Tom, plenty here if you take a look around in the playlists, and my blog is updated daily for a coffee break read (paxton-road.blogspot.co.uk)
Loving your work as always James, your books sit beside me here in my home office in NZ. I keep catching glimpses of an EMD G12/G8 top in the background.....a project in the making?
It’s been a long time that one, it’s a G8 in TTn9, as in 1/120 on 9mm track, based on the one I saw at Trinity Loop, Newfoundland all those years ago!

Okay! 0:52 and I’ll go refresh my tea. Be right back!
Hope it was worth the break?
I stepped away to get my tea when “the day” interrupted but I’m back now. Love seeing the update on the European project. It’s funny to see it at 14:14 in such a lush green - especially as springtime lands on our doorsteps outside and a general greening is happening everywhere. It’s an adjustment to a scene that felt so grey and industrial before and I was starting to see in that way. Fascinating how the evolution of a layout moves it.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways absolutely worth it. Thank you for continuing to invite us to sit with you at your workbench.
As always, the pleasure is mine.
