That’s exactly why I decided to put out fresh water sump videos. It was almost impossible to find help on line when I was setting mine up. Thanks for watching!
When you replace water during a water change it is essential that the dechlor be dispersed and circulated rapidly through the tank in order to neutralize the chlorine/chloramines. For this reason I add it to the aquarium, in the flow from a power head so that the fish ate not exposed to any temporary chlorine burn.
HalfMan HalfCichlid Makes sense. I usually pour it in at the same spot where new water is being added so it gets instantly treated as it circulates. Thanks for stopping by John 😀👍🏻
I'm about to add in a sump to my system, thinking about going small at first just to see how it works on my smaller tank. If its a success, i''ll add to me larger tank very soon, thanks for sharing Ben.
Thanks for making videos like this I feel like you explain topics well, at a pace I can keep up with yet is still enthralling Sincerely Taylor out in Colorado
Hi Ben, I thought this is a fantastic video! You took the process step by step, so someone new has some great beginner tips. I like the way you “Marked the Line” with painter’s tape. When I did mine, I just used a permanent marker as my set-line. Anyways, thanks very much for sharing 👍.
Great video as usual Ben...I am putting the Trigger 39 Sapphire sump in service tonight! You should do a video on advanced methods of nitrate removal. Things like a sulfur denitrator or a Seachem DeNitrate reactor using a very low flow pump.
@@BenOchart No problem Ben...im not an active UA-camr like yourself, but maybe I can do something through Google Photos or Whatsapp? We'll be in touch soon.
@@BenOchart I don't do videos on my setup because it's out of contents with my channel. But I can Email you the plans to look at. If you like and want to use it in a video no problem I got the idea from Brindley Aquatics centre in Birmingham UK. The guy gave me the plans. After I ask him why he had canisters connected to his sump. Since doing it this way my nitrates are 5 ppm I went on holiday for 2 weeks and my nitrates never when above 10 ppm. It's basically 2 canisters connected to a 140g tub. With plants growing in it. The return to the second canister pubs water back to the tank the first canister pulls Warter out. That canister is full of sponge the second bio home ultimate.
Great content buddy, i currently have cannister filters on 2 50 gallon tanks and looking to build a couple of sumps for them so these tips have been very helpful
Sound like some good tips! I don’t use sumps currently but I think I may play around with one with my next big tank setup. When that day comes, I’ll be sure to reference some of your sump videos!
Ben you are appreciated your videos are always right to the point full of knowledge and very useful I to am addicted to this hobby with everything that goes with it maintenance feeding filtration and of course enjoying my tanks I have a 220 gallon predator tank and a 75 and two 20 gallon long tanks thank you sir for being you god bless my friend and tank on ✌🏻
I have had a sump for years now and didn't want to set it up with a overflow box so I went with a reef tank set up it's been up and running for a week now but I'm having trouble getting it to quiet down I love the idea of the water quality the sumps are capable of but still a lot to learn thanks for your video your one of my favorites fish tubers. Ps when are you going to do a live stream lol
Thanks for the tips. What Substrate would be suitable for the sump filtration? I had cichlid sands but the sand was draining into the sump through the drain pipe. Please advise what substrate to use here, I have African cichlid peacocks in my 4ft tank.
In the sump? The noise I was trying to reduce was in the overflow box located in the aquarium. The Durso made a huge difference. What’s a “reverse Durso in the sump?”
Thinking about getting an external over flow for my sump set up because my 220 is not drilled. Any tips on preventing flooding using the overflow box method? I read that they eventually loose their siphon.
Hello Ben, could you do a bit of a video of your piping, complete, from your tank to your sump? I only see a single Durso outlet; is this true? I believe that your tank is acrylic, so I wonder if you do not have some sort of emergency overflow, you could easily drill a hole or two in order to prevent flooding. Have you considered a Bean Animal system? Thanks for the video.
There's another hole drilling in the back but that was for a return. I instead caped it and went with a return tube at the top. Below the durso is a one inch opening with a flex hose that goes to the cover of the first chamber. The return is just a 1 1/4" hose back to the tank. Very simple system with no hard (PVC) pipes. I believe I show all of it in prior videos. I've heard that the bean animal is the gold standard both in reliability and how quiet it is.
Recently purchased a 450l tank with a 120l sump had it all up and running but really not gone on them as a risk of flooding may change it to an fx6 setup
Only real way I could see a 100% safety on sump over flow is drill a hole near the top of the sump and run a pipe from it to outside that or to another part of the sump just to take overflow.when you do part water changes and fill back up do you still knock it off just to test and make sure?
You've got my back Don and I appreciate it. It's not uncommon for trolls to have several different accounts. A sad life indeed. Thanks for stopping by, much appreciated.
Different types of media in that sump including Biohome, some sponge filled bio-balls and some spirals from Japan. In the last chamber I also have some Brightwell NO3 cubes and a block. Everything is below the water line except for the spirals from Japan. You can see the media in this video; ua-cam.com/video/Sh95qa-YLbc/v-deo.html
Love your videos! I’m going to change out my DIY sump for a ruby 36s trigger tomorrow. What do you believe is more beneficial more sponges/biomedia or a refugium? Great tips!
You must know I’m about to build my own sump. The Hap Gods are truly in my favor🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏿. My tank is not drilled though. How will that pan out far as noise?
No sure since I haven't run one that way. Anyway to get yours drilled? I've heard the quietest is the "bean animal" set up that uses several drain holes.
Mine quieted down after I increased the media to the very top. Also I drilled holes in the drip plate doubling the total number of holes. This spread things out and made the drops be less forceful. It's in one of my prior sump videos.
Hey Ben, thanks for the videos and info! I am relatively new to sumps. I have a 125g cichlid tank with a sump. I have a chamber with pin type bio balls. Do they need to be out of the water or are they still effective if submerged? In the video it looked like quite a bit of yours were under water. Thanks!
small thin worms that show up when you vacuum? Those are common and not dangerous.. However, if it's a type of worm that attaches to the fish, you could have a big problem. Take a few to your local fish store and seek out some advice there.

Is there a way to have the water line above the tank rims bottom? It looks kinda weird with the water level below it.
Reverse durso in the sump is actually quieter than the regular durso lol
