Thanks for this field test. Doesn't look like it performs quite as well as some other packrafts, but it's just for lakes and very slow rivers so for the price it does the job.

Could you/anybody please tell me again what type/brand of paddle you use? Paddle here in Germany and can't find such a part...

Thanks. Looks like I definitely made the right choice getting an Alpacka.

You’re comparing a thousand dollar raft to an Amazon special? LOL
      OK then…

you can use to as a bed too though. especially with some clothes or a mat underneath for insulation. you would probably sleep as snug as a bug. It would be good for backpacking or mountain biking. I remember going backpacking down the Escalante River in Utah and using my air mattress as a boat. This would work better than an air mattress.

I can't wait for the USA to move over to the metric system for weights and measures. Decimal is where it's at. Counting in base 16 is so nineteenth century,

Except in length, when we use base 12 and base 5280. My LWD was 678 grams (=23.85 ounces).

I want to get this mainly for my dog, how does it hold up overtime to your dog getting in and out? thanks!

Was considering this cuz of how small it packs but it looks like a pool float in action. Maybe if it had a fin attachment for better tracking...

2:10 "I've got my dinghy inflated", you must admit, that's pretty funny.

Thanks for the test. Got two questions:
    1) Is it me or is this dinghy a pain in the butt when it comes to paddling and going in straight lines?
    2) And could you maybe say something about the durability in terms of long term usage? The video is from 2013 and I guess you used the dinghy for a while. Doesn't look too sturdy...

      1. Elite quality packrafts don't go straight to begin with and this is an ultra-cheap one. On flat water it is going to want to spin more than travel. I think it is more meant to go 50m out into deeper water to relax in the sun or fish. Even in a high end packraft, flatwater is miserable, they are designed for travel with the current.
      2. It is made of 210D polyester. Probably decently resilient, that is much heavier material than say a sleeping pad. That said, I did see lots of reviews complaining about leak problems at the valve so that is likely the weak point. I wouldn't expect it to be very tough though at this price.
Hope that helps, I don't own it but the specs tell most of the story of what to expect.

The Paddle weighs 430.9 grams. Your right base 10 does make more sense.

There are a few sub $600(brand new) inflatables with 440+ weight rating, this thing isn't that great.

    • @DavidThomas-sv1tk

I've got a pic of my 13-year-old daughter and three(!) of her friends in one. So about 400-450 pounds. They were definitely getting wet, but most of their bodies were out of the water. So Rose could have let Jack onto the raft (in Titanic).
With a total of 275 pounds, you won't have much freeboard and it will be trickier to get in and get out with getting water onboard (in this video, he didn't do it very well). But in flat water, it would be doable. I wouldn't plan on a dry butt, and if you have a sleeping pad with you, I'd put that above the inflatable seat which is pretty minimal.
A plus about have a pack in front of you is that it tracks better (steers straighter). I suspect because more of a keel forms as your weight and the pack weight press into the water, I notice it helps if I put my legs over the front (like in this video) compared to sitting more upright. Then the raft doesn't swing left and right with each stroke quite as much.

I am contemplating this also. As a thought I figured Id bring a heavy duty garbage bag and put my pack in it with a pile of air to make it float. Rope it to the dinghy and go. That way theres less weight in the boat

Thanks for taking time to make the video. But I get the feeling you weren't that serious about the demonstration. It has a rating of 300+lb and seems(no offence) you are not a light wt . If the thing is fully inflated, appears it does not hold your wt. Seems you are sitting in a full bath tub. And the dog(which is cute) is not helping the sell. Appears the raft is barely treading water and ready to sink. Base on this, the raft is a no sale.

+w lew I checked out the Alpacka paddle at approx. 23oz,which is still really light(20oz with 3 section). Brad should trash this video.(redo????)

not impressed. I would rather pay a few hundred more dollars and get an Alpacka scout. This that, I would stay dry while paddling lakes, and could take it down low water class III. With the Klymet, it looks like I would be laying in water.
