Electronic Drumset Individual Inputs VS Cable Snakes (DB25)

- Cable Snakes for Edrums are usually a DB-25 Connector. It usually has about 8 Inputs. Here are the pros and cons of drum modules that use them, vs drum modules that just have individual inputs:
Pros:
Cleaner cable management from the module
Faster setup
Cons:
Limited placement options
Most times: accompanied by less connection options
Forced to buy extensions
Why bring this up?
Its A way for Roland to FORCE YOU TO GET A FLAGSHIP
It can influence your module purchase. Especially if you’re doing a conversion. Know that if you buy a TD11/25 you might want to get some extensions.

Not to mention if you have a problem with one of the cables, just can't replace the one cable.
Very true
Where do you by replacement cables if you want to upgrade them to better ones? I have no problem with these cables as I am not bothered about getting a big kit. I have a basic kit and it's good - well for my purposes and I just cannot afford big expensive ones, esp as I am starting out on the drums. The cables that came with the drum set was pretty long so I had no problems with the standard set up. How do u get new drums to add if I want to add new tom-toms etc? Do I just get splitter cable? I know you do not like cheap drums sets but they do have a market and a purpose. I think they are great for introducing one to the instrument and if one wants to go better than yeh move on to better drums later on. No money wasted. I love my drums set, its good fun.
great vid as usual Justin! another con of cable snakes. if even one input gets a kink or breaks, you're forced to buy a new snake whereas if a cable were to break on a module with individual inputs, you can just buy a new 1/4" for a few bucks rather than an expensive snake.
+The Sickness very true, I should have mentioned that.
Yep, good discussion. I've tolerated cable snakes with my TD-15. I put velcro to essentially keep them in place for very quick tear down and setup. Now I have a TD-30 and plan to tackle the cable management issue. I'll probably custom build my cables to length and bundle them in a way similar to a snake situation. Keep up the interesting videos.
+Kevin Vitale haha yes individual inputs are a blessing and a curse. And thanks :)
The Roland TD1K/KV has a cable snake with the db25 connector.
The Alesis DM10 has individual inputs, but it might as well be a snake as they're all wrapped together with like a 7-8 inch bicycle tire innertube rubber sleeve at the module end. You could easily cut it I guess, but it does make it convenient to keep them all together and gives it a cleaner look. They aren't all the same length either so they do somewhat dictate where you mount your pads and cymbals. Having the individual inputs was one of the selling points for me though, and everything the module can do once you take the time to learn it, which so far has been a never ending process. I learn something new about it everyday by reading what other people who've had theirs longer have learned about it :-)
+Keith Bickford :) well it's a bit of best of both worlds. Better cable management but individual inputs
The good old TD-3 has individual inputs:) Pearl was really smart to build it this way. For the outputs, you will need several times the same length anyway. It all goes to the same device.
+Vdrum Tips very true, it's actually a good thing on the Mimic.
Are cable snakes cross compatible with other modules? Or is each one designed to only work with one module?
Great info as usual Justin!!
+Zax Drums thanks man :)
Great Video. I like cable snakes sometimes but honestly I really like when there is a cable snake and also individual inputs. Like a cable snake for the included pads and cymbals but 4-6 more individual inputs
+SwankierAcorn too bad no one makes a module like that :(
@@65Drums Yah-That would be Too Simple!:)-lol.
If you have any headphone extension cables around they can be used to extend dual trigger cables.
Great advice as usual. Funnily enough the Thomann Millenium MPS600 has a cable snake with 1/4" jacks both ends. All cables cable tied to the rack at the correct positions. the individuals cables got me out of trouble when I split the kick drum cable.
+David Barlow-Smith interesting, Best of both worlds!
I join 2 snakes using a same-sex d-sub joiner so the module can live in a separate mixer case. It’s nice to only have 1 thing to content at shows.
Yah-i recently got a e-kit and it was down to an Alesis DM6 or Yamaha DTXPLR...DM6 used a Snake and I have extra pads I wanna use so that Def was a Deal Breaker. I also found out that with the KP65 Kick Pad that comes with the Yamaha kit, it enables you to plug in an addl pad without taking up a separate input(so i have more than enough inputs for my extra pads-Nice...Now I just need to Clean-up all those Cords!:).
Thanks, this was informative. But you didn't discuss one aspect: are there differences between the two in triggering sensitivity or latency? Other than the logistical stuff, do the snakes perform worse, better, or the same?
I just bought an Alesis nitro mesh, it's my first EDrums. i need know which cable is better to connect to PA? 😐
Which is better?
Cables, as they can added or taken away. The drum snake can't be modded, unless u have a degree in electronics..
Yes you should put a toe spreader around your inputs or only use angle quarter inch cords it certainly happens let's say vh 11 moves a lot or using too short or a tangled up cable it can loosen the jacks solder joint I can send you a picture of it if you would like and if you look online you'll see DIY solutions for this using various setups
Interesting :/ I'm not too worried though. I've gone 4 years with it, and its still OK. Actually thinking about upgrading soon
Great video Justin!
I do relate to this situation
I myself also arrange my drums differently
my choice is to buy Hosa cables/right angle to straight ends
Add them to my setup accordingly.
Once my cables are in place on drums and routed to my module
I then cut all excessive lengths off on module side and install straight 1/4" stereo connectors to the cables and label them accordingly with label tape machine (20 bucks) professional quality look!
On drum side labels are black w/white #s, on module side white label /black #s
Then I snake/tape cables together every 4" w/black electrical tape(very clean look)
I purchased some clear stick on cable hooks and installed on the backside of my stands so from the front of my kit the cables are nonexistent.
I hope this helps anyone that is as fussy as I am, lol
+MarcGinger Gagne' gotcha, good info :)
I need a very long cable snake i have td 11 module and my cable snake is too small for my hybrid set
Are there any multicore to single inputs convertors?
Awesome video
+Ducatimatty Thanks!
I have a Td-4 module and it has one too!
+D.I. Studios yup :)
I wanted my module further out of the way so all the cables on the snake were a little short. Could you not just connect a DB25 F-M ext cable? Are these available?
I'm surprised Roland use cable snakes on their modules. My old TD-6 was a cheaper module but had individual inputs, as did my Yamaha DTX750. One of the other disadvantages to using a cable snake is if a cable breaks, it can't easily be replaced particularly if it breaks at the module end, so you either lose an input or buy a whole new set of cables.
+Ashley Cox that's very true, I should have mentioned that
That's called "planned obssolecence" lol
hi, I wanna know if my cable snake from an Alesis dm6 drum kit, will work with an alesis dm7x drum module with drum pads from alesis dm6 kit, so just interchangeable the alesis dm6 drum module to an alesis dm7x drum while use the same old cable snake, and alesis dm6 drum pads, It would work?
Great channel!! I had a question, what kind of iRig do u use to do your videos? Im trying to purchase one through Amazon. Thanks!
+Oscar D. Just the standard one Quarter inch one. Not iRig 2.
Hey I got a cable snake and just snapped the kick cable . How do I get my kick back .do I have to replace whole thing
One big con for individual inputs type is if they move at all over time the soldier joints on the input will break and your module will need repairs, this happened to my td10 the db25 is less prone to damage your inputs
I've never had that happen on my TD30
65 Drums it probly can be avoided by having plenty of slack on cables and making sure nothing moves too much but using angled cables will also help less movement and if your warranty is expired it can take a while for a Roland certified bench tech to put a new female jack in
Hi Justin
Any pointers on replacement decals or some kind of identifier for each cable?
you show the mimic i believe and those are outs, which i thought would mean would go to the recording interface. i don't think it's for cabling the pads. could be wrong though. since it's not out yet just a guess
+Eric W if you watch to the end of the video I explained that :)
65 Drums musta missed it
: ) Thankyou...
+Zam Muan thanks for watching :)
if i wanna buy a cable for an extra cymbal for my alesis crimson mesh kit what is the cable that i need to use?
Will the Roland C5400133R0
Cable Harness work with alesis Nitro kit module?
My kits rack wasent that solid and was constantly moving it back in place and a tangled cable I didn't see kept pulling on the input I did not notice it till it started to cut out
Oh i see
Anyone know like the best module with a snake. I got the ded 200 and wanna replace the brain. If anyone knows I’d appreciate it. Thank you 😎🤝
Has anyone got pinout diagrams for roland, alesis etc breakout DB25s? I feel like these can be soldered easily
Hi thanks for your videos are really helpfull would you make a review on berhinger electonoc drumset. Im planing to use it for vst drums
I've never seen one before. But if I ever get a chance to play one, I'll probably make a video on it
Hey Justin! Did you notice that they redid the TD-11k with the PD-8A pads? No Rim Sounds :(
Thanks! I didn't notice that :)
Can we convert port of cable snake to individual input? I have the module of Roland Td1-kv with cable snake
There is a video on yt somewhere. He cuts all the cables on the snake and solders a 1/4 female jack to each cable. Then you can usw any cable.
I own the alesis nitro kit electronic drum set. If I buy another drum module for better sound will it would work?
+- Lantern0315 It should those are all 1 zone triggers right?
65 Drums I believe so. And it is a cable snake.
interesting topic! is this the new camera???
+why you delete? Same (iPhone 7) but I switched it to 4K mode in this video.
Plus if the snake fails your screwed
I'd much rather pay 20-30$ for a new snake then pay hundreds and have to wait 50 years for Roland to fix the soder joints
?
Really? Snake cable pros? I think they have just cons, lenght, modularity, serial plug, repair capability, etc.
The only pro is convience. As someone that sets up and disassembles drums all the time, it does save time. But that's literally the only thing they have going for them.
Just picture someone jiggling the 1/4 cable on the back of the module till its gets lose, you can't do that with a Db cable because it has the two screws and way less prone to movement, the input on my td-10 started cutting out it actually loosened the female input got me?
I understand, just depends on the rack
I hate cable snakes ,thats the main reason i plan to ditch my td 9 and get a td12 or td20
demonocus drumocus I had a td11 module. While it was great for practice,I was always worried about how delicate and flimsy the cable snake was,one decent knock and you could damage the cable and the unit connection.
I went for a td12 (would've gone for a 20 if i had the extra cash),but I really haven't looked back. The only thing I miss from the 11 is the usb port but my media player does the same job through the mix in for practising songs or playing backing tracks live.
The extra ins and especially the on board mixer make the td12 perfect for live work and honestly, anyone who can drill a hole can run cables through a rack.Go for it mate.
+dropbearattack good point dude
I agree, I got a Roland TD25 and I’m learning the hard way about cable snakes, bummer!
Maybe they ever make something without cables ☺☺☺
+Paul Des Versatrigger does actually
love that crappy camera auto exposure. not ur fault.. Anyway, .like the old school way. but i not drummer just play a little as part of making music.
Will the Roland C5400133R0
Cable Harness work with alesis Nitro kit module?
