Look at getting SMD Led's. They are surface mounted diodes. From Amazon you can get a pack of 5050 100 (5 colors x 20) for $7.00. 5050 is the size. You can get smaller ones than the 5050's, but they become difficult to work with. You use copper tape to lay out your circuit and then tape or glue the led's to the copper tape. Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Each color of led uses different voltage/amperage so you do have to be careful when mixing colors if your power source (usually a small watch battery) doesn't have enough amperage or voltage to handle multiple colors.

  • @rtd1791

I have an easy peasy mac-n-cheesy way to make light up cards that also happens to be significantly cheaper. Oh and a bit more practical, because the light can be reused.
I use balloon lights, not the round ones but the cylindrical ones. It’s not as slick as the light kits and I ask my recipients to hang the light themselves, which I am sure would bother some card makers.
I make a pop up card, typically an easel style card. Choose a design that’s made for 3D display. Then decorate the the card front with a two sided window. I usually make see thru shakers and line the interior window with vellum to diffuse the light.
The balloon lights have a hanging hole; I include an ornament hook. I place a paper loop inside the card up near the fold. The recipient just has to slip the hook thru the paper light.
There are several advantages to this type of light up card. The light can be left on plus the batteries are replaceable. I’ve only done this for Christmas cards but all of the lights lasted for the season. Your recipient can reuse the light in an ornament or they are great for lighting up cabinets or utility closets (places that could use a little light but usually don’t have it like under a bathroom sink). You can actually put them in a balloon too. And as I mentioned before they are much much cheaper than card light kits.
Another advantage I appreciate is that people don’t have to actually touch the front of the card to light it up. Kids will turn lights on enough to make the button press area grubby. In my experience adults don’t turn on card lights enough to justify the expense and effort of the kits. (my opinion) People do however turn the lights on in my cards and then just leave them on display :)
You can usually buy 100 balloon lights for less than $10 on Amazon or at least you could before prices started shooting up. They come in both white and colored.
The downside of this idea is that it makes the cards bulkier and if you mail it you definitely have to use a box or a well padded envelope. You could assemble the light inside but if you are mailing the card, there’s a risk of damage if your card gets crunched against the light. I just put the light along side the card with assembly instructions.
I loved the cabin inside the snowglobe and the nativity card. Using cardstock to focus the light is so clever. Thanks for the tutorial.

Just about done doing a similar nativity scene thanks to your video. Although, I don't have a cricut machine, just a good ol fashion xacto knife. Makes it much more time consuming but it is still fun to do. I started doing light up cards about a year ago. I use the copper tape and make my own switch with a piece of cardboard. I use the flat SMD led's. I was taping them on, but when there is a lot of humidity, they can loose contact. Been experimenting with gorilla super glue. So far that is working on the larger LED's. But with some of the smaller SMD led's, too much glue comes out and causes the led's to not make contact with the copper tape. Still trying to find a good solution. Thanks for the interesting video.

A good tip for similar card designs is buying a pack of simple LED lights (can be found on Amazon as a pack of 100 or so), some wires, batteries and a cheap solder iron to attach wires to LED legs. It's the most basic electronic circuit that works nicely with 3V CR2032 batteries (if voltage is much higher, it can destroy LEDs). It becomes much much cheaper than buying these specialised light-up kits.
I also tried using copper tape instead of wires which is a simpler option, however, my circuits would break after a while since copper is slippery, so the contact wouldn't be very reliable.
I hope this comment is helpful to anyone!

These are pretty amazing!! On the last one I am glad you addressed the issue with the battery being drained during mailing. However I am wondering if there’s a chance the card could shift to the left inside the envelope and push that little tab inside the card out of sight.. Or is there enough friction to prevent that?
