Great review on the CORE , I have had mine since May and put through over 4K without a problem and no wear marks either. I use comp-tac pro international holster and love it! Very fast on the draws lol.. Mine is 9mm and i have the leupold deltapoint sight on it with the triangle dot. You are right as it took alittle to get use to it but all I can say is wow what a difference using that over iron sights.I shoot alot of steel challenge and love the fast target pick ups.
Also note that Melonite, if similar to Tennifer, actually penetrates a certain amount into the steel itself. The exterior finish may disappear, but the protection will remain. That is my understanding, asking S&W would be the best option.
I have a M&P Pro that I used in USPSA Production division and have shot it extensively (probably 20,000 to 25,000 rounds). It is one of the best guns I own, and I have plenty. (three Glocks G19, G34, G24 and sold a G22) I checked my Glocks after watching this video and found they showed Kydex wear too. I have other pistols coated with the different finishes offered and the only one that seems to hold up is Wilson Combat's black finish. I don't feel it is a big issue, if it gets too bad have it re-coated.
Yep...for sure the finish is disappointing...I am working on getting some time in with the red dot as well, and wondering if you have gotten comfortable with more close up shooting with the red dot sight. I find it is not too bad on smaller close up targets, but with larger up close targets it feels a bit cramped looking through the glass.
I would go with a ceracoat finish over the duracoat, you may also want to look into kydex holsters that are leather/suede lined on the inside to help protect the finish
My fobus holster scraped up the finish on my glock 21. pretty sure it's not the finish to blame...its more than likely the friction from the type of holster. My serpa holster does zero damage.
Both the Glock and the M&P use a Melonite finish, Glock calls it by a different name but it is the same. Glocks finish is a bit thicker, but its on plain steel so the Glock would probably have rust problems if it was thinner. Since the M&P has a stainless slide they can get away with a thinner finish, guns are tools and ones that are used get visible wear, usually the only pretty guns are safe queens. Smith's finish is thinner but they are also a lot cheaper than a Glock, you can always get an aftermarket finish to make it pretty. I highly recommend the trigger kits from Apex Tactical, they can make a huge improvement in the trigger quality.
Thanks for commenting. I've been shooting M&Ps for five years. All in, more than 60,000 rounds through a couple of guns. In the case if this video, I gave an honest assessment of the lower quality finish of the M&P. I have a Gen 2 G19 18 years old. No issues with finish and the gun has 50K rounds through it. Frankly, the M&Ps are not up to Glock standards with regards to finish. However, they are the gun I shot more than another. I agree with you guns are tools. My guns are not safe queens, rather they are used. I've put 30,000 rounds through my M&P pro 5" in 9mm. As far as cost, I've pay about the same amount for new Glocks and new M&Ps. Somewhere around $500+ for a new M&P or Glock. I have upgraded most of my M&Ps with Apex Parts. However, IMHO the Pro Series should come with better triggers than they do. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
I agree on the Pro Series triggers. I got my first M&P a little over 8 years ago, right after they first came out, I recently got a Pro Series CORE and was disappointed in the trigger, so I've already installed the Apex USB and machined sear to improve the trigger. I've been shooting pistols competitively since 1968.
Just finished putting my S&W M&P 9 pro CORE together with the RM06 and sighting it in. Mine also came with the threaded barrel. Do you ever shoot steel case ammo? Do you think it may affect the life of the chamber or ramp? I shot aluminum and brass case because I wasn't sure if the rmr would get hit by ejected cases.
Talon683 due to holster in my opinion. My friend has a glock 19 that has scratches ALLL over the end of the slide where the "finish" is absolutely destroyed bc it has been holstered in to rough/stiff/hardened kydex. The few people I know that own glocks have had this very same problem. Not just m&p lol
I own Glocks and M&P's and one of the Glocks shows wear on the slide from a Kydex holster with much less than 1500 presentations. One of the M&P's was used in competition (Kydex holster) and hasn't shown any wear. Maybe each gun has different issues with different holsters.
This type of holster will destroy coating on EVERY single gun in the world. S&W make slides from stainless steel, so it will never corrode regardless of coating. Smith & Wesson was founded in 1852, Glock was founded in 1982 (130 years later) LOL
+Miroslav Mitrovic Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion with us! Actually that has not been my experience. I've been shooting Glocks since the early 1990s and using Kydex holsters. None of my Glocks have had finish wear issues as noted in this video on the M&P. I've many owned other guns and used kydex and none of their finishes have performed as poorly as the S&W M&Ps. I love the M&P platform and shoot it 90% of the time when training or teaching. Its a great pistol... but the finish is not of the same quality of Glocks based on my experience.
+Guns, Gear & On Target Training, LLC I wonder if it varies with the kydex, because both my 19 and 23(when I had one)lived in the same holster. I don't shoot as much as you so it doesn't come in and out of the holster as much, and both shown slight finish wear around the muzzle after ~1 year.
are your co-witness sights trijicon or just standard? In addition, would a CORE with an RMR make a good CCW choice? Looking at the Glock's I would have to get mill work done, then a re-finish and then an RMR which would cost much more, unless I went Zev but damn, those Zev slides are nearly the cost of a new Glock!
+Zulu Tango These sights are S&W standard sight. A CORE with a RMR and light attached would be a great option. A bit large for my taste but certainly a good one. Personally, I like the M&P Shield of EDC.
duracoat wears faster than most factory finishes...cerakote is the shiznit...wonder what smith is doing different with the finish...is it not melonite?
Thanks for your suggestion. All my guns are tools. Holster wear means nothing to me. I like the kydex holsters as they have proven extremely durable and fast.
What would be the price of the red dot sight that is on your gun if purchased separately? It appears there are many models of the Trijicon RMR red dot. Would you have wanted another model sight instead of this one?
$500-600. I did purchase it separately. I selected this one over others. This is a Trijicon RMR Sight Adjustable (LED, 3.5 MOA Red Dot). This sight can be mounted on any handgun or long gun set up for it.
The finish wear may be a factor of the type of steel S&W is using, in this case stainless. Stainless steel can of course still be chemically treated (Tennifer, Melonite, etc) but the temperature during application is much more sensitive and the tolerances much tighter than say carbon steel. Simply put it is harder to chemically treat stainless steel as opposed to carbon steel, leaving more opportunity for something to go wrong. Honestly I don't see the point of choosing stainless steel if you know you're going to use a chemical treatment. Carbon steel is fine for such applications, ask Glock and HK, and is lighter too.
Thanks for your inisght. I think the Glock are far more durable. My Gen 2 g19 has tens of thousands of presentations out of a kydex holsters and looks great.
Guns and Gear & On Target Training, LLC Agreed. I recently picked up a 13 year old Gen 3 (2 pin). It looks like I bought it yesterday, the only sign of wear is some smoothing on the polymer where the web of the hand and fingers rest. The slide looks perfect.
@@petersilecchio4417 I think I want the same. Ultimately would love to have the performance center ported slide without the ported Barrel, but I'm not sure if that's possible without buying the slide or Barrel separately
Kyle P Hi, A quick call to S&W Customer Service will answer that for you. My Friend has the Ported Model. I guess less Muzzle Upward Motion. But it Gets the Outside Of Barrel and the Slide Very Dirty.
Hey would it be worth it for me to trade my Gen 4 glock 17 in FDE for an M&P C.O.R.E. with an apex trigger job? I have an m&p 9 stock already and love it and have come to enjoy shooting m&ps more than glock, but don't know if it is worth it to trade my g17 for a C.O.R.E. Also I had a USA made gen 4 glock 19 that I carried in a Desantis scorpion kydex iwb holster, and the 19 started showing some scratches/wear after only putting it in and out of the holster 40-50 times. I was told the USA ones had the best finish on them and mine scratched up real quick.
I have an M&P .40 with the stock trigger and I love it, but I have noticed it's a long trigger pull. Everyone that has an Apex trigger on their's tell me it makes the pistol 100x better than it already is.
Yes, the holster is the OWB Conceal-Tac. Holster/No Cant check out usgruntgear.com/owbcoho.html Let them know that wishse sent you. They are amazing with their customer service and I love their gear! This is one my my all time favorite holsters.
Very true, it is stainless steel. However, the finish Smith uses is pretty low quality. The finish has worn off very quickly, after only 1000 presentations from holsters. Smith can do better but they don't. Glocks don't have that issue.
Yes, but the wear on my Gen 2 Glocks is so much less compared to the smiths. And, I've done so many more presentations with the glocks. My gen 2 G19 has 50,000 rounds through it and almost all were presentations from holster. Yet, hard to see the holster wear compared to the M&Ps. Not a big deal IMHO as my handguns are tools... Thanks for watching and commenting.

Good video, nit saying that the finish is sub-par. But the barrel and slide are "Stainless Steel" unlike the Glock.

that slowmo from the gun is a sick view!

Excellent on the ceracoat. I like the kydex holsters I have and don't care that much. The slide is stainless steal and that should hold up. Thanks...
My fobus holster scraped up the finish on my glock 21. pretty sure it's not the finish to blame...its more than likely the friction from the type of holster. My serpa holster does zero damage.
I have mine 1 year now. Don't have a problem. With holster.
Thanks for the update!

The finish is a black oxide. Melonite and Tennifer are a treatment that's processed into the metal.
+Walter H White: Black oxide can be only performed on carbon steel. S&W make slides from stainless steel so the black oxide finish cannot be used.
+Miroslav Mitrovic It's still a finish. The melonite is treated into the metal and cannot be removed. Or am I incorrect?
Never has optics on a pistol before. Always used iron sights

Strange you would have an issue with wear. The melonite finish should hold up really well.

Should have used a Safariland holster. They won't hurt the finish at all

Yes... Thanks for watching.
good one... how well does it carry [ edc] with the Trijicon RMR on it?
carrys great. No issues at all. The RMR is not a problem
Hi, have you shot the Walther PPQ Q5 Match?
Can’t decide whether to get the Walther or S-W?
Same, I bought a Glock G34 Gen4 and got brass to the face. Looking to sell it for either of these options, but to also include the CZ P10
I Decided to go with the S-W M&P Pro Core 9L. I already bought the Delta-Point Pro with the 7.5 Triangle. Have to order it next week.

One More thing The Flash that comes out I don’t Like.
what is the name and brand of your holster and where did you get it?
That's a holster made by us grunt gear. He mentions it a couple of times on this thread if you scroll down... there's even a link he posts.
Brother, where'd u that holster from?
Holster recommendations? Comp core
Would you recommend the RMR on a rifle or is it only good for use on a handgun?
It would certainly work on a rifle.

the gun has an steinless steel slide.
Very true, it is stainless steel. However, the finish Smith uses is pretty low quality. The finish has worn off very quickly, after only 1000 presentations from holsters. Smith can do better but they don't. Glocks don't have that issue.

what holster are you using with the core?
US Grunt Gears holster. However, the gun can be used with any holster as the RMR will not affect the placement of the gun in the holster.
