You can’t dispense with Julia, she is the floating ghost of this album.
Yes, i would include Julia on mine.
Well put.
I Will and Julia together help to turn this from a good album into a great album
Yeah, definitely. I love you saying 'She is the floating ghost of this album'. What a brilliant explanation 👍
Julia has to be there.
I would never change anything on the White Album. It is one of my "desert island" albums, and in my opinion, the best double album of time. I'm sure I've listened to it at least 200+ times. In addition to the music, there's the poster, photo portraits, printed lyrics, and the starkness of the white cover. Even the so-called lesser-songs make the better songs all that much better. For several years I thought that "Yer Blues" was the weakest track, but as I've grown older, I tend to appreciate this track more. Even "Revolution 9" with its "turn me on dead man" history, make the song interesting.
Here's my one LP White Album track listing:
Side 1
1. Back in the USSR 2:43
2. Dear Prudence 3:56
3. Everybody's Got Something to Hide... 2:25
4. Blackbird 2:18
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4:45
6. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 2:45
7. I Will 1:46
8. Julia 2:57
(Total Side 1 Length: 23:45)
Side 2
1. I'm So Tired 2:03
2. Mother Nature's Son 2:48
3. Savoy Truffle 2:54
4. Revolution 1 4:16
5. Cry Baby Cry 3:02
6. Helter Skelter 4:30
7. Good Night 3:14
(Total Side 2 Length: 22:47)
Total Album Length: 46:32 (approximately 8 seconds longer than the first record of the original White Album)
A Few Notes: I tried to keep a fairly equal amount of songs from both Lennon and McCartney. I ended up with 5 McCartney and 7 Lennon songs. I also put one Harrison song on each side, as on the original album. Additionally, I wanted to keep one song with Ringo vocals, so I kept Good Night since I think it's a pretty good album closer. I put Helter Skelter as the penultimate track because I think the transition from it to Good Night sort of replicates the contrast between intensity and peace going from Helter Skelter to Long Long Long at the end of Side 3 and going from Revolution 9 to Good Night at the end of Side 4; I thought it was important to the feel of the album to have the record conclude on a similar note. This was tough. I had to let go of some good songs that I wanted to include.
I feel the same way when I compile a White Album list. Good job by the way 👍
Sexy Sadie, Long Long Long and Cry Baby Cry MUST be on this album. They are among the best songs ever written...
Sexy Sadie has to be on it
I love the contrast between Helter Skelter (the loudest song) and Long, Long, Long (one of the quietest). It would just feel wrong to me if they weren't together on the album
Cry Baby Cry was a throwaway that Lennon didn’t even remember writing. i like the song, but ‘among the best songs ever written’ is a stretch.
Long, Long, Long? Yes. Cry Baby Cry? Maybe. Sexy Sadie? Not so much.
No one but The Beatles could create that much experimental, yet accessible content at that point. I love the premise of this video, but I'll take the double-sided imperfections as is. 👍
Single disc? I think the Beatles should have released it as a quadruple album!
🤣😅🤣 classic
They had plenty of material for it
Exactly
Yes!
...and in Quadrophonic
Side A
1. Glass Onion
2. Dear Prudence
3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
4. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6. Rocky Racoon
7. I'm So Tired
Side B
1. Helter Skelter
2. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
3. Revolution 1
4. Blackbird
5. Revolution 9
6. Why Don't We Do It In The Road?
“the starkness and honesty” of the white album is exactly why it holds up as my favorite beatles album. it’s always felt like the most “dangerous” beatles album if you can use that term to describe any of their records that way. it’s the one that’s the least inherently knowable, you can go back to it every time and find a new gem you weren’t ready for until that point. i think some of their best songwriting is featured on this album. when you don’t have room for sour milk sea, i’d say the album isn’t long enough.
Hmmm, we want you to work with Giles, on this! Know your stuff.☮️
I did this with a bunch of friends, bandmates and girlfriends about 20 or so years ago. We'd all gone back to my place after a birthday celebration so some of our judgements may have been alcohol impaired :). I remember that I put the disc on and the "it would have made a great single album" debate started. We couldn't all agree on which tracks would be included so all wrote our own track listings. As I recall we setup guidelines limiting it to under 45 minutes and included Revolution and Hey Jude in the options.
I cannot remember exact track listings and running orders (we also included that) It actually wasn't as easy as I thought and took quite a while before we were done there were a couple of abstentions because they didn't know the whole album that well. I think we had about 10 versions finished. What I do remember is that Back in The USSR, Blackbird and While my guitar gentle weeps were chosen by everybody. Revolution 1 & 9, Piggies , Yer Blues and Rocky Racoon were not selected by anybody. I know I also chose Hey Jude, Birthday and Helter Skelter. Possibly also Dear Prudence and Glass Onion plus a few others. Unfortunately I cannot remember the complete track listing (it would no doubt be different today - maybe even different on another day back then). None of the 10 or so finished track listings were the same but I seem to remember that we all thought every version would have made a fantastic album, maybe even the best Beatle album. Which we agreed showed the depth and strength of the songs
Just watched the video at midnight and couldn't go to bed. My daughter stared at me as I had pen and paper with a list of 30 songs and times. I love double albums. Yes, there are songs that sometimes aren't as good but in the confines of the album fit perfectly. When deciding which songs to include, I wanted to ensure that both the soft and hard sides were represented. I attempted to balance John and Paul songs while including two from George. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be as I immediately discounted all of Side 4. I picked my 15 favorite and the chore was the running order. With that, here is my track listing:
Side 1
1. Back in the USSR 2:43
2. Dear Prudence 3:56
3. Blackbird 2:18
4. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 3:14
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4:45
6. Birthday 2:43
7. Julia 2:57
Total: 22:36
Side 2
1. Everybody's Got Something to Hide... 2:25
2. Mother Nature's Son 2:48
3. Piggies 2:04
4. I'm So Tired 2:03
5. I Will 1:46
6. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 2:45
7. Yer Blues 4:00
8. Helter Skelter 4:30
Total: 22:21
I wanted the album to end on something people would remember similar to Tomorrow Never Knows from Revolver and A Day In The Life from Sgt. Pepper. Helter Skelter does that with its heaviness and an emphatic "I've got blisters on my fingers." If you're interested in listening to this list, I created a playlist in Spotify: open.spotify.com/playlist/042eLN6TEqr7X0z1ZZXusn?si=c9df0da55fde4a08
One could argue that the necessity of omitting songs like Glass Onion, Martha My Dear, I'm So Tired, Don't Pass Me By, Sexy Sadie, Long, Long, Long, Savoy Truffle, Cry Baby Cry and Julia is perfect justification for the Beatles' decision to make this a double album. Great mental exercise and video. keep 'em comin'.
Definitely Julia, and Sexy Sadie in my opinion
Basically remove Revolution 1 & Revolution 9 & replace them with Hey Jude & the original Revolution & you then would have the greatest double album ever..... No contest!!
I was beginning to ponder what I would chop and then I saw your post. I agree with you 100%. Get Hey Jude and the single, rock style version of Revolution on there and remove R1&9 and that would be enough to improve it.
@@jimmycampbell78 I've said the same for 30 odd years..... Even made a tape of it with the replaced songs & put Lady Madonna on too!!
Now do it as a single album.
sorry Lads. You cannot put powder blue in the corner of a wall that's already painted sky blue. It's just silly.
Can't agree there. Hey Jude has to be one of the dullest Beatles songs, whereas Revolution 9 is pure genius.
Kill Number 9 and Wild Honey Pie….and you still face an 83-minute double album. Perfect.
Side A:
1- Back in the USSR
2- Dear Prudence
3- While my Guitar Gently weeps
4- Happiness is a warm gun
5- Mother Nature's son
6- Everyone's got something to hide except for me and my monkey
7- I'm so tired
8- Don't Pass me by
Side B:
1- Yer Blues
2- Sexy Sadie
3- Long, Long, Long
4- Glass Onion
5- Rocky Racoon
6- Julia
7- Revolution
8- Helter Skelter
singles: A- Obla-di, Obla-da / B- The Countinuing Story of Bungalow
A- Sexy Sadie / B- Glass Onion
A- Blackbird / B- Piggies
There’s not a single Beatles song that I do not appreciate. I do not like Revolution #9 , but there’s not a single Beatles song that I do not appreciate .
I have some ideas about how I would arrange the single album but everything that was cut would still have to exist on another album like “White Album B-sides”. That being said, I love that they did it as a double album!
Great video! Made me think a lot and have to pull up the original tracklist as a reminder.
Fantastic video once again. Always high Quality, big fan
Side One
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Obladi Oblada
5. Don’t Pass Me By
6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7. Blackbird
Side Two
1. Birthday
2. Martha My Dear
3. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide
4. I’m So Tired
5. Mother Nature’s Son
6. Helter Skelter
7. Cry Baby Cry/Can You Take Me Back
Omitting 'Julia' is scandalous, but actually I love the album just as it is 'warts and all'.
In my single disc version of the White album i would add the hey Jude/Revolution single
1 Revolution
2 Martha my dear
3 i'm so tired
4 Blackbird
5 Sexy sadie
6 Mother nature's son
7 While my guitar gently Weeps
8 Happiness is a warm gun
9 Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey
10 Piggies
11 Julia
12 Helter Skelter
13 Hey Jude
@The Vinyl Music Life yes i did. Most of the White Album songs are between 2 and 3 minutes, only tracks like Hey Jude and Helter Skelter are considerably longer. Side one is about 21 minutes and side two 22 minutes in this configuration
The Beatles White is a masterpiece for its uniqueness and depth. I wouldn’t change s thing. It takes us on a journey. George’s pieces are terrific. John rocks out yet at other times is tender. Paul rocks as hard as he ever did, yet wrote wonderful acoustic masterpieces. Blackbird is a standard that everyone learns. I would keep everything, including Revolution 9. It was a generation ahead of rap and sampling. It is a masterpiece that should be left as it is like the Mona Lisa.
I refuse this challenge. Wouldn’t know where to start.
A single Beatles 68 Album (rather than a cut down White Album) Side 1: 1. Back in the USSR, 2. Dear Prudence, 3. Hey bulldog, 4. The inner Light, 5. Glass Onion, 6. Blackbird, 7. While my guitar gently weeps. Side 2: 8. Helter Skelter, 9. Julia, 10. Revolution (single version) 11. Birthday, 12. Savoy truffle, 13. Hey Jude, 14 Long, long , long. Run out groove very short bit of Revolution 9.
Like you, i love the album as it is. But its a game ive played before so here goes.....
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear prudence
3. Wild honey pie
4. While my guitar gently weeps
5. Happiness is a warm gun
6. Blackbird
7. I will
8. Julia
22 mins 55 seconds
1. Yer blues
2. Mother natures son
3. Everybodys got something to hide except for me and my monkey
4. Helter skelter
5. Honey pie
6. Cry baby cry
7. Good night
22 mins 50 seconds
Job done! Great video as always.....
As Paul said, "its the bloody Beatles White Album...SHUT UP!"
This is easy for the 'Spotify & Co. Generation', but I am from the 'Old School Generation' and have been enjoying to this great album solely on vinyl since the early 90's -> so as far as I am concerned ''....can't touch this!''
You've left out Sexy Sadie, which I've loved for over 40 years when I first bought the White album, Julia is a must, Long, Long, Long is truly underrated and should be on, Martha My Dear, I love McCartney's piano intro, he was really good at piano intros like Lady Madonna, You Never give me your Money and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five.
I think the problem is you have two choices - you can look at it from a 2021 perspective and cut it down based on that, which most people seem to be doing and that's why the choice is so tough. Or you could imagine it's 1968 and you're sorting the wheat from the chaff and it then becomes a lot easier.
I was stranded on a desert island, and I gotta tell ya, having “Dark Side Of The Moon” with me wasn’t really a big help...
The whole album is brilliant except Revolution 9..I think "I'm So Tired" is an amazing piece of Lennon work...wish you could have included it.
I would close this album with George's Long, Long, Long. It's a beautiful ending to any album.
Very well made video, I agree wholeheartedly. I'd omit "Birthday" for "Glass Onion," and maybe leave out "Wild Honey Pie" and "I Will" in favor for "Julia" and/or "I'm So Tired." Other than that our lists are essentially the same :)
(Also, "Everybody's Got Something to Hide" and "Piggies" are some of the most underrated songs by the Beatles.)
If I was doing a single disc White Album, this would be the line up:
(side 1)
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Ob La Di
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Yer Blues
6. Don't Pass Me By
7. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
(side 2)
1. Birthday
2. Sexy Sadie
3. Blackbird
4. Julia
5. Savoy Truffle
6. Helter Skelter
7. Revolution 1
George gets a song on each side. Ringo gets his song. Lennon and McCartney songs always alternate (no two McCartney songs or Lennon songs follow each other). This also fits within the run time of vinyl.
The album is actually quite great as is. The only "filler" songs to me would be Why Don't We Do It in the Road, Rev. 9, and Goodnight. So many of the other songs you didn't mention on your 1 album list to me would be: Savoy Truffle, Cry Baby Cry, and Glass Onion. Great job in narrowing it down to one album. This double album certainly deserves a spot in your top 10 Doubles.
It was hard to narrow it down, but I agree with you - it's great as is.
Wow! It always blows my mind that people dismiss or rank very low “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road”. It is actually one of my favorites on the album. I know it is cool for everyone to have their own opinion and likes, but it just amazes me that so few people like this song.
@@amandahuginkiss4063 I’ve always been fond of it, the cool, bluesy sound and the naughty lyrics - I just wish there were more lyrics.
Surprised you left off Martha my dear.
I like Martha My Dear
Probably my favorite song on there!
@@rodsmolter5046 : mine, too.
I'd like you now to turn the White double album into a triple! Which other songs would fit?
Nice sturdy spine there! I'd switch out "Piggies" with "Savoy Truffle" for the rollicking horns. But, as you suggested, the sprawling nature of the material is why it is so glorious as a double-album.
I will have to give it some thought , but mine would certainly include Savoy Truffle ,which to me is the hidden gem on the album. It would also include Sexy Sadie and Cry Baby Cry. How about doing a similar exercise for the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway , and Exile on Main Street ? ( I can already hear the screams of protest ...)
"What's The N ew Mary Jane" on the entire 4 side lol Great video Barry. Come to expect nothing less. Btw, Just recently visited you "worst to best" Tull. Extremely good!!
Thanks
1. "Back in the U.S.S.R."
2. "Dear Prudence"
3. "Glass Onion"
4. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
5. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
6. "I'm So Tired"
7. "Blackbird"
8. "Piggies"
1. "Rocky Raccoon"
2. "Birthday"
3. "Yer Blues"
4. "Helter Skelter"
5. "Revolution 1"
6. "Honey Pie"
7. "Savoy Truffle"
8. "Cry Baby Cry"
On Neil Young's album Rust Never Sleeps, Side 1 is entirely acoustic and Side 2 is entirely electric. It flows just fine. Any imbalance fails to harm the album a whit.
I would have to throw "I'm So Tired" on there, oh and "Cry Baby Cry". Would need the obligatory Ringo number as well.
I agree -the album lives off the 'ramshackle' almost random charme. I never bought into the old discussion that this should have been a single album...
The 'single LP' White Album is a classic game - did a verison of this recently, but it was a fantasy one, rather than strictly using the tracklist of the original:
Side A:
1. Sour Milk Sea (imaginging the Beatles recorded a proper version, they are after all mostly on Lomax's one)
2. Revolution (the single version)
3. Back in the USSR
4. Dear Prudence (that fade in is irrestistable)
5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
6. Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except for Me and My Monkey)
7. Savoy Truffle
Side B:
1. Sexy Sadie
2. Not Guilty (again imagining something like the Anthology version was finished)
3.I'm So Tired
4. Blackbird
5. Julia
6. Long, Long, Long
7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
What I loved about this is that it shows how good George was getting, and just why he was so frustrated - yes, Not Guilty was probably awkward lyrically but it's a cracking tune, and why he gave Sour Milk Sea away I'll never know. These and Long, Long, Long are far better than some of the half-efforts that were squeezed on.
It's perfect, in my opinion! An incredible musical journey that really builds into something disturbing at times. I'd have a very hard time choosing anything to leave off.
It's a work of art and any notion that it should have been a single album would be an artistic blunder
Back in the day I burned a "Super White album" CD. I pretty much left everything the same except I added Lady Madonna/ The Inner Light between Sides 1 & 2. I swapped Revolution 1 with Revolution. Believe it or not I left Revolution 9 in but replaced Good Night w/ Hey Jude. Yeah I know Ringo's left with 1 vocal but the way Block that Kick' segues into Paul's stark Hey Jude intro is breathtaking.
I think the White Album is greater than the sum of its parts. I don't think the best songs on it are better than the best songs on other albums of theirs. I think the weaker songs on it are weaker than the chaff on other albums ("Wild Honey Pie," "Bungalow Bill," "Don't Pass Me By," "Piggies" just to give one from each Fab.) But together they capture a moment in time, a feeling, and a sense of burgeoning creativity that encapsulates why the Beatles are still so exciting. I definitely get the shorter-is-better argument, but I think the album's excessiveness and roughness are strengths.
I've actually listened to the white album as a single album for several years now:
Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
Obla Di Obla Da
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Martha My Dear
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
Piggies
Mother Nature's Son
Everybody's Got Something to Hide
Sexie Sadie
Helter Skelter
Long Long Long
I keep the songs in the same order as the original so it kind of feels like the same album. I guess this might not fit with the 'A side/B side' time constraints, but I don't care, I never actually have to flip the vinyl.
You're missing some great tunes
One reason the White Album is so great is it feels like you are in the studio with the Beatles. I really would not take any songs off, even Revolution 9, which adds to its overall feel even though listening to it is hard. I would in fact add one song and get “The Inner Light” on there as well as it was recorded around this time. Okay I do not mind very long albums so, hey, let’s make it longer.
Side One:
Back in the U.S.S.R.
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Wild Honey Pie
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
Total Time: 23:39
(As you probably noticed I did not change anything because it was already perfect!)
Side Two:
Birthday
Cry Baby Cry
Blackbird
Piggies
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Mother Nature's Son
Julia
Total Time: 23:32
(Tough choices had to be made!)
It’s The Beatles, doesn’t work as a single album.
I'd swap out "Revolution 1" and "Wild Honey Pie" for "Don't Pass Me By" - granted, I like country music and Ringo's my favourite Beatle, but I also think it's a good track in and of itself, and the lyrics do capture that Beatlesque whimsy we know and love. Otherwise a solid list.
Side 1: 20:54
1 USSR
2 Dear Prudence
3 Rocky Raccoon
4 Honey Pie
5 Savoy Truffle
6 Glass Onion
7 Happiness Is Warm Gun
Side 2: 23:36
1 Black Bird
2 Long, Long, Long
3 Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
4 Sexy Sadie
5 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6 Helter Skelter
7 Good Night
Although there is the awkward side length difference I’m pretty proud of this version of the White Album
Barry, Barry, Barry! I have no problem with you cutting this elpee to a single disc, but...YOU LEFT OFF SO MANY GREAT SONGS! Bungalow Bill? Cry Baby Cry? Martha My Dear? I'm So Tired? Savoy Truffle? Sexy Sadie? Oh, my...quite the conundrum! I think I'll set yours up as a playlist on Spotify and see what it sounds like. Then, perhaps, I'll try one of my own... Thanks for your work, as always...
Thanks for playing along
@@classicalbum GLASS ONION / SAVOY TRUFFLE.
To quote one who was there (a Mr McCartney. P, of Liverpool 18): "I'm not one to say (that) maybe it had too much of this or that; it's great, it sold, it's the bloody Beatles' White Album, shut up!".
This is a fascinating exercise! It's certainly a tighter album as a single, but less charming and less telling of where the band was at.
The only one of my favorites that you've left off is Don't Pass Me By, which I'd sub in instead of Rocky Raccoon. Gotta have some Ringo!
"The White Album" is a masterpiece. But shrinking it down to a single album is an interesting concept.
Side One:

Although carrying a bit of fat, there is not enough to trim it down to a single, so might as well keep it on. You do a good job but how can we leave out Julia, Sexy Sadie and Cry Baby Cry! I also think this album needs to end with Goodnight :)
👍
Gotta 'av Ringo singin' on it so "Don't Pass Me By" makes the cut. What? No "Julia[?]" No waaaaay. What'd they replace? Yer single disc re-sequencing's good enough to make that difficult to decide.
I don’t love everything on this double album, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Every song is ingrained in my brain.
1. Glass Onion
2. Back in the USSR
3. Ob-la-di Ob-la-da
4. Dear Prudence
5. Blackbird
6. Julia
7. While my guitar gently weeps
8. Helter Skelter
9. Happiness is a warm gun
10. I'm so tired
11. Yer Blues
12. Revolution 1
The problem here is that, while I agree with those who say that the White Album isn't quite 2 album's worth of Grade-A material, it's still significantly more than 1 album's worth of such material. So in order for the Beatles to release as many good songs as possible, a couple of solutions are in order, both of which seem fairly obvious to me. The first is to not limit the album to 14 songs - after all, most of these tracks are pretty short, and disc one of the White Album has 17 songs on it. So, while my version of the album is packed with tracks, neither side is actually as long as Side 1 of Abbey Road. The second solution would be for the group to release an end-of-year 45, with two non-album tracks, and to put two of the longer songs on it. For me, this would be:
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" b/w "Helter Skelter"
Perhaps George's song wouldn't get all the way to the top of the charts, but it would probably do as well as "Lady Madonna" did in the US, and "Helter Skelter" would keep up the Crazy-Paul-B-Side tradition that began with "I'm Down."
Otherwise, I've tried to make sure the John and Paul songs are fairly even (8 for John; 7 for Paul) and still include 3 George songs. (Sorry Ringo, but neither of yours are quite up to snuff.) Unfortunately, this would still mean leaving off some quality tracks, but Anthology 3 would be that much better as a result.
1:
"Back In The U.S.S.R."
"Dear Prudence"
"Savoy Truffle"
"Cry Baby Cry"
"Martha My Dear"
"Glass Onion"
"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
"Yer Blues"
2.
"Birthday"
"Sexy Sadie"
"Not Guilty"
"Can You Take Me Back"
"Julia"
"Blackbird"
"Piggies"
"I'm So Tired"
"I Will"
"Happiness Is A Warm Gun"
I could never do this with The White Album. It is a journey wherein every stop yields a treasure. One precious moment for me has always been how the dreamy comfort of "Good Night" lifts you out from the dark mania of "Revolution 9".
An album screaming for this treatment, however, is the Smashing Pumpkins' deeply flawed, but occasionally sumptuous "Mellon Collie..."
It was Paul McCartney who said it should be the dirtiest, nastiest, sweatiest rock'n'roll ever made, after Pete Townshend had described his track I Can See For Miles in this vien, but when McCartney heard it, he thought it sounded "quite straight, sort of sophisticated" as he put it. So McCartney set about writing Townsend's initial intention, the nastiest, sweatiest rock'n'roll track, which became Helter Skelter. Also McCartney was writing Blackbird and was asking Donovan about his thoughts on it. There's a bootleg somewhere with McCartney and Donovan singing Blackbird and mentioning the black rights struggle in America.
What about a ranking on Wings, or Paul solo work just a idea.
My single LP White Album.
1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Obladi Oblada
4. I’m So Tired
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6. Yer Blues
7. Happiness Is A Warm Gun.
1. Martha My Dear
2. Sexy Sadie
3. Rocky Raccoon
4. Savoy Truffle
5. Cry Baby Cry
6. Helter Skelter
7. I Will
The White Album is great as is. There are a ton of albums by other artists since the dawn of CDs that could use some carving though.
Yeah, brutally hard. Based on each song's individual merit, my first run through was eight to definitely keep and 10 to definitely eliminate. I then ranked the remaining 12, and from that list added to the keep list from the top on down until I hit a stopping point of around 40 minutes. No favoritism (by main artist/performer/lead vocalist, length of time, etc...). In original album order...
Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
Ob-La-Di, Ob La Da
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Blackbird
Julia
Birthday
Yer Blues
Helter Skelter
Revolution 1
Of course, in the digital age it's easy to program your player to only do this if you like...
How about ranking the Bay City rollers albums
I think some of the "throwaways' such as Piggies, Honey Pie, Happiness, Monkey, could have been all shortened and made a part of medley ala' the Abbey Road Medley. Of course, get rid of Revolution # 9 and you'd have a damn solid single album.
You called Happiness is a Warm Gun a “throwaway”? Woooooow. Well, at least we agree the album is awesome!
Here is my selection of a ‘Single’ White LP:
Side 1:
Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
On-La-Di, On-La-Da
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Martha My Dear
Julia
Side 2:
Birthday
I’m So Tired
Blackbird
Yer Blues
Everybody’s Got Something
Sexier Sadie
Helter Skelter
Cry a Baby Cry
If you want to try another Beatles album re-creation, here's an idea: Create a one disc vinyl album of Beatles songs recorded in 1968 or 1969, but not included on either the white album or Abbey Road. Basically, the idea is to combine the better songs from Let It Be, which has quite a bit of lesser material, with songs from Hey Jude, which contains earlier recordings that don't really fit with the rest of the album. "Hey Bulldog" might also possibly be included.
I appreciate your subject.
With this list in mind, what 44 mins would they have put on their follow up album between the White edits and the Let It Be set?
(Ringo singing Goodnight probably should end your White side B)
I think Beatles fans would have been fine with a single LP White Album followed by another 2 albums before the Abbey Rd release.
i could not leave of georges long long long really under rated track for me glass onion great guitar sound always loved good night a prefect end to a classic rockin album ps i think it would have been a good idea to have left yoko ono out the studio when they where making it
Yep. "Long, long, long" one of George's best. Haunting.
A very interesting topic. Have you considered trying this with Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, now that's a challenge. ;)
Your hypothetical single album version skips out on the required addition of a Ringo song. You really have to cut something and add in Don't Pass Me By.
Side One:
1. Glass Onion
2. Happiness...
3. I Will
4. I'm So Tired
5. Blackbird
6. While My Guitar...
7. Cry Baby Cry
Side Two:
9. Yer Blues
10. Martha My Dear
11. Everybody's Got...
12. Long Long Long
13. Dear Prudence
14. Mother Nature's Son
15. Julia
As you can see, this tracklist heavily favors John over Paul, which makes me feel that much more guilty about the whole endeavor. Oh well, it was a fun challenge.
My single album choices:
A - 21: 05
USSR
PRUDENCE
GENTLY WEEPS
GLASS ONION
BLACKBIRD
WARM GUN
BIRTHDAY
2 - 22:03
MARTHA
YER BLUES
MOTHER NATURES
PIGGIES
JULIA
HELTER
GOODNIGHT
BUT even more fun is keeping it as a double, pulling out the weakest and replacing those with Hey Bulldog, Not Guilty and Across The Universe.Maybe even What's The New Mary Jane.
Cheers!
This was a fun show, thanks. I always felt George was shortchanged on this album. He was limited to four tracks. His song quota should have been upped. I might be mistaken, but at the time, Harrison had embryonic versions of "All things must Pass", "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't it a Pity". I read somewhere that Lennon and McCartney rejected those. If this was true, I would have replaced crap like "Why don't we do it in the Road", "Honey Pie" and "Don't Pass me By" was those great Harrison songs. My opinion.
John Lennon didn’t reject George’s songs
It was McCartney
John was actually trying to help George work on the song All Things Must Pass
There is a video in witch you can hear this
I may be wrong, of course, but I’ve got the feeling all of the above happened during 1969, while recording what would have been “Get Back” and the clips with Lennon working together with Harrison on his songs belong to the Let It Be sessions filmed, likewise, a year later? But it’s true he felt (and said so endlessly) ‘The Beatles’ should have been shrunk into one single album, leaving the question to which one of his other songs apart from “Guitar Gently Weeps” would have made it into his standing two songs per album quota…
AWESOME COVERAGE OF THE BEATLES WHITE ALBUM MANY THANKX TO YOU AND THE CREW PROUDLY😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Absolutely every song on the white album is perfect. One of my favorite albums of all time!
If I would have a decision, than I would change "Revolution 9" for "Hey Jude", "Good Night" for "Sour Milk Sea" and "Wild Honey Pie" for "Child of Nature".
Bazza you were right - there is nothing to leave off and it is top of the list. The Beach Boys' "Surfing USA" surely from the same root as "Back in the USSR".
What a great idea for a video (The Clash & Sandinista next?). I prefer the double album but as you ask I would add Hey Jude and close the album with it and I definitely wouldn't leave off Julia.
Side 1
Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness is A Warm Gun
So Tired
Blackbird
Birthday
Side 2
Helter Skelter
Yer Blues
EveryBody's Got Something to Hide
Revolution ( The Loud Version)
Julia
Hey Jude
45 minutes running time - It might squeak on.
I quite like your choices, mostly, and your track order.
So, forgive my not checking the times, may I please trade out for my single disc:
Martha My Dear instead if Honey Pie.
Julia instead of I Will.
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da instead of Rocky Raccoon.
I will miss Good Night the most, from what’s left behind.
I like the clip of Wild Honey Pie at the end. Shame there’s no room for Why Don’t We Do It In The Road instead. Maybe a short version...
Turning the White Album to a single disc only works if it had never been issued as a double disc.
The single White Album :
Side One :
Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Martha My Dear
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
I Will
Side Two :
Birthday
Everybody's Got Something to Hide
Sexy Sadie
Long , Long , Long
Revolution 1
Savoy Truffle
Cry Baby Cry
15 tracks : 44 minutes
I’ve just discovered your channel - where have you been all my life?
Thank you for you donation. check out the wealth if videos on my channel and patreon. Weclome aboard
There is always discussions about trimming down this album. Revolution 9 is an obvious choice to get rid of but what else? If it were trimmed down Why Don’t We Do It On the Road would be gone. But who does not love that song? Rocky Racoon? Love that. There are other examples. You might trim it down to one and one-half albums. In the album world that does not make sense unless you end up with a Blonde on Blonde with side 4 being 10 minutes. I suggest the real discussion should be making it two separate and district albums. I always felt like record one was a late 60’s album and record two was a 70s album (even though it was released in 1968).
Back in the USSR,
Dear Prudence,
While my guitar
Happiness is a warm gun
Martha my dear
I'm so tired
Blackbird
Piggies
Birthday
Sexy Sadie
Everybody's got sthg to hide
Mother Nature's son
Helter skelter
Cry Baby Cry
Revolution
Julia
I didn't re arrange any order but I just cut tracks out:
1.Back in the ussr
2.Dear Prudence
3.While my guitar gently weeps
4.Happiness is a warm gun
5.Blackbird
6.Julia
7.Birthday
8.Revolution 1
9.Goodnight
Two of my top 6 six songs from their career were omitted from this cut, Cry Baby Cry and Glass Onion. I'm so Tired ranks high as well. I do like Wild Honey Pie being in there though. The only way I'd change the album is switch out Revolution 9 for What's the New Mary Jane...maybe find something to switch for Old Brown Shoe.
@Mikey Wright I suppose that would make it difficult LOL
Your use of language is fantastic
I would surely have included Hey Jude at the end of face 2. It's a pity that at that time singles songs were not included in the albums. Imagine With The Beatles album with I Want To Hod Your Hand and This Boy instead of Little Child and Not A Second Time, I Feel Fine and She's A Woman instead of Mr Moonlight and I Don't Want To Spoil The Party (Beatles For Sale album), I'm Down instead of Dizzy Miss Lizzy (Help! album), Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out instead of Wait and Run For Your Life (Rubber Soul album), Paperback Writer and Rain instead of Love You To and Dr Robert (Revolver abum), Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever instead of Good Morning Good Morning (Sgt. Pepper's ... album), The Balld Of John And Yoko, Old Brown Shoe and of course Don('t Let Me Down instead of Dig It and Maggi Mae (Let It Be album).
「ob la di ob la da」🥰もpopで楽しい気持になる名曲👏🙌で好きな曲🥰です😃🎵🤘👌☆。
I do think that the white album has quite a few songs that could have been left off of it, but I wouldn't have left out "Martha My Dear" or "I'm So Tired". I definitely would have dropped "Wild Honey Pie", and "Rocky Racoon" and "Piggies" could be dropped to make room for other songs. If it is argued that dropping "Piggies" would leave not enough Harrison songs on the album, I prefer "Savoy Truffle" to "Piggies".
Got to start by saying I don’t even like While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Anyway here’s my single album version:
Side one
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da
4. Happiness is a Warm Gun
5. Blackbird
6. Piggies
7. I Will
Side two
1. Birthday
2. Mother Nature’s Son
3. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide
4. Sexy Sadie
5. Helter Skelter
6. Revolution 1
Aye! Nice good review and I have been wanting to get ahold of a copy of the white album but it's hella expensive
save save save. it's worth it Nguuhao. Take some LP's into a used record shop, then trade for a used version. Get it!
@@barrygreenfield6043 imma check out one of the local vinyl shops here in austin texas and see if I can get an used copy
@@snowqueen_8958 You will smile a lot Nguuhao. Its like all THE BEATLES catalogue, unique to itself.
Save the money and just listen to it on spotify or UA-cam
Start with eliminating the tracks that should never had seen a production album:
Revolution #9
Wild Honey Pie
Rocky Raccoon
Bungalow Bill
Revolution 1
Why Don’t We Do It…
…Me and My Monkey
Don’t Pass Me By
Then the Meh tracks:
Honey Pie
Savoy Truffle
Mother Nature’s Son
Cry Baby Cry
