    Hi Jors Malan. Thanks for the great video today about the Oranje Gorge. I was the person who named Big Bunny and Dolly Parton in the early 1980's. In the late 1970s leader of the Rhodes University, with fellow members, we pioneered the kayak route which I later offered as a kayak and rafting route, operating as The Riverman. Big Bunny got its name due to a German rafting tourist who couldn't say Bi Rapid but said Big Rabbit. Dolly Parton (which comes AFTER) Big Bunny got its name as you said from the two big rocks with a cleavage down the middle where the river runs. Our rafting operations continue on the Gorge where we now call the Falls either the Oranjevalle or the !Gariep Falls. Nobody knows who Ritchie was and we abandoned the name Ritchie Falls. I have made many videos of the Gorge (putting in at Raapenskraap and getting out at Coboop). We are a bit unhappy to see so many operators there now but I suppose that was inevitable. I'm now 75 but still rafting (running Vaal River rapids as well as Orange Gorge). I'd love to meet you if our team goes back in 2023. Just one correction for your video. The first rapid you come to on your hike is not normally a big rapid. Higher up where you show a massive hole, that's Dolly Parton. And above that is Big Bunny, with the falls in.the far distance. They can be approached more easily on land from Onseepkans via the road that.runs past the mission station and then becomes a hiking route. Regards Prof Graeme Addison. 084 245 2490. Ps you were very wise to walk back when you did.

    Awesome piece of the river there. Thankyou for putting yourself through that walk in the sun over those rocky banks, for us all to enjoy. Your knowledge and skills in the veld are shown by your ability to recognize your limits and the dangers of walking alone, far from assistance. I look forward to next season when you take us all the way to the main waterfall. Hope your harvesting goes very well next week

    That landscape of pancake like stacked rocks, is just phenomenal, it's utterly beautiful! We as viewers are so fortunate to have you as our guide Jors Malan, not only on 4x4 drives along west coast sand dunes, but closer to home and the wonderful story on just how your family farm of Medjool dates came to be, with the added bonus of seeing Milo and his reactions to the surroundings too. What a land it is, yes driving through is one thing, but walking and making the physical connection with it all, sensational! Oh lordie, what a river, the giant standing wave whirlpools, never have I seen anything that dramatic, or, beautiful, I'd call that one of the most epic 'meditation walks' ever. 'The spirit in me bows to the spirit in you', thank you so very much, as this and part two will be saved over Christmas on widescreen T.V. and watched in meditative contemplation with the family, but also as Jana Stanfield said, "I'm not lost, I'm exploring" and Ralph Waldo Emerson, "It's not the destination, it's the journey".

    Amazing Jors! I always wondered what the Orange river gorge would look like with high water levels, it is unreal especially that standing wave against the flow. Would have been amazing if you got to the actual falls, but I think that's still quite a bit on... We've paddled that section quite a few times (always stayed at you guys), looks completely different on lower levels, massive gorge.
    I think big bunny is at 16m and dolly is the one higher up, there's normally two massive rocks standing up out the water, hence the name. Also, Richie falls I was told to be at the far koppie on the Nam side at 20m, that flows into the main gorge.
    Would be amazing if you could do the same trip with less water for comparison.
    Hope to visit you next year, maybe paddle down the river again...

    Next time you can take the jeep and see how far you can drive up to the falls. Its amazing how the river flows back upstream. Water is most definitely more mesmerizing than fire.

    Hi Jors, absolutely amazing.
    Thank you for taking us along with you on your adventure.
    It was epic!
    Just watching was becoming nail biting near the end there with the sweltering heat, low water supply (finishing your water?) and having to cool off repeatedly using the river.
    It became a reality survivor episode 😀 making me nervous on the edge of my chair.
    We got to see something we may otherwise have never got to see in life.
    I know camera versus reality can be deceptive (like you say not doing it justice) but I wondered how deep the river must be there in those sections with the big rapids as the river doesn't look as wide as compared to other sections of the river (e.g. there by the farm and by Upington) but the flow rate is clearly very much higher - so I wondered how deep it is getting in the deepest in those parts e.g. 10m, 15m, 20m or deeper ?
    I guess guides who know the area might have real measurements.

    • @JorsMalan
      @JorsMalan  Рік тому +1

      At this level based on what i saw on the rowing trip 20m is conservative in some parts, nit in the rapid itself , but below the rapid. the gorge at the main fall that is now mostly submerged is the narrowest part of the Orange that i have seen.

    • @JorsMalan
      @JorsMalan  Рік тому

      Yes, the main reason i have held back on a drone tus far was not cost, but its limitations. it can add something to a video, but it cannot make a video or replace the experience of walking there.

Vraag: Soos jy geloop het was daar opdrifsels op die rotse bo die water vlak - as die rivier dan al so veel hoër daar? Sien uit om by die valle te kom....... Mooi Loop... En vat vir Milo saam volgende keer......

    Interessant! Op die 1:50000 skaal kaarte wys dit n waterval met die naam Oranjevalle, as ek reg onthou. In die 80's het ons van Augrabies af tot by die see gestap en by Oranjevalle het die hele rivier onderdeur n groot rots gevloei, met n stroomversnelling. Natuurlik was die watervlak laer as nou. Ek wil nog altyd weer die plek gaan besoek.

    • @JorsMalan
      @JorsMalan  Рік тому

      Oranje valle is 'n nuwer naam, die Ritchie valle is nou in onbruik. Mense praat ook van die omkeer valle. Die deel van die rivier aan die Namibiese kant val alles onderdeur 'n groot rots.
      Daardie klink na 'n interessante staptoer.
