My takeaway from this test is that the A7sIII is "cleaner" at the highest iso's but that image is so heavily compressed by the internal noise reduction that it's unusable (to me). In my opinion Neat Video does a better job at redusing noise than Sony's internal process. For future noise tests, please also use zoomed in stills (screengrabs from video), as the youtube compression makes it impossible to see the actual difference.
i'd redo these tests with 2 of the same lenses, esp since gm lenses usually have better AF in low light so i wouldn't necessarily attribute the faster focus, etc to the a7iv until a more level playing field is had
so slog3 isn't good for low light? i shot a small clip of some xmas lights at 3200 iso (slog3) and it looked like complete shit on my a7iv. still trying to figure out the best way to expose in low light.
You also had a Sony 24-70 on one camera and the Tamron 28-75 on the other. That affects the autofocus test as well as the Sony’s autofocus is probably still better
Thanks for doing this comparison! I wanted to know if I should get the new A7IV or the A7SIII as my second camera. I am a photographer/videographer and the only camera I have right now is the A7rIII. I been using Fuji X-S10 as my second camera for awhile now.
Hey Lee! Thannks for this comparison. Can you share some S-Log and S-Cinetone files from a7 IV with the highest ISO to download? I wanna compare low light capability of a7 IV with my Lumix S5. I'm not sure if I should switch over.
Thanks for the comparison. I notice at 5:25, the A7S3 exposure show brighter by +2/3 even though the both camera setting is the same, can you confirm that. wonder why? thanks
It's probably the screen brightness. He said the panels are different. The proof is in the side by sides. The camera screens are not reliable for comparisons.
The pixels are bigger on the s3 vs the IV. To put it in layman’s terms imagine if u had 12 big windows (12mp) to light your house (sensor) vs 33 tiny windows (33mp) to light that same house (sensor). Your house would receive more light because of the bigger windows. That’s why cine camera operators opt for the lowest megapixels possible because they give the better and cleaner image. Hope that helps.
Is there ANY chance you could show us how well the animal / bird eye AF is working with the SEL200600 ? Can’t find any videos about it and I’m in the place either to invest in R6 or A7IV but can’t make a decision without seeing how well the A7IV performs for wildlife…I know it’s not your theme…but maybe?!…
I use Sigma and Sony GM glass and have not had any issues with my a7Siii AF in extreme low light. Makes me wonder if it's just Tamron being Tamron with the AF, they seem to bog down AF on every camera I've watched reviews on...That a7IV looks like a great bargain for what all it offers! I think when you venture into real darkness and not lit up streets at night the a7Siii truly shows it's low light capabilities. Also, would have been a more apples to apples comparison had you kept aperture and shutter speed equal for both cameras in slog3 opposed to adjusting the a7Siii down for exposure. Or at least show both at 3200 iso then both at 12800 iso to show what both are capable of at their second native iso. Not to mention what happens as you climb past 12800 lol Either way, great unbiased video!
Here are some suggestions for future videos: 1. Use a tripod, because with movement it is very difficult to see noise levels 2. Show 200% zoomed in videos, to see the differences better
Hey brother what would you recommend for someone doing both photography and video in terms of a single camera and lens(es) if budget/cost was unlimited? So far I am thinking either Sony Alpha 1 (A1), Sony A7IV, or A7SIII . Ignore prices, I looking to buy once/cry once on most versatile camera & lens(es) setup.
Hie, I am also confused, have you bought the cameras, what is your setup. I am thinking of buying Alpha1 (A1) as my primary camera and I'll be waiting for something new from Sony to come out to use it out as a secondary camera.
Great video. I’m wondering if the stabilization is better on one or the other or if you for sure had the same settings to ibis. The side by side looks different.
I really liked that video. Thanks for taking the time to do that for us. Does the dual iso thing only apply to slog? Does it kick in when using s-cinetone too?

Lee... there have been some early reports of potential over heating - even some reports of people saying it felt warm just setting up the menus. Did you experience any warming or over heating?
No I never had any issues, I Even used it on a job shooting photo and video for like 10hrs. But I wasn’t continuously recording video for that long. Just 5-10mins on and off between taking photos

I probably got the worst copy of the A7 IV because the noise, even at ISO 1200, is appalling. The noise on the darker portion of pics I took are the ugliest I've seen from a modern camera. To my eyes it's a low light pauper, not a king or even a prince. Am selling the camera.

To be extremely honest right now the only three reasons to get a7Siii is the rolling shutter performance, full frame 4k 60/120 and raw upload on ninja. a7IV is better in almost every other area.
And also if you are mostly a video shooter for the hybrid shooters like me, I would love to get the A7SIII but is far more expensive and not as good for pictures as the A7IV. At the end it will come to suit personal needs.Salutes

No idea. Could be the way light is hitting lens or the lens it’s self. Sony GM on the left and Tamron on the right
Maybe coz of pixel pitch

Great info and good work!
I own the a7siii . I'm obsessed. I feel like if your a low light shooter its a must own.
what is the best profile to shoot in low light on the a7iv?
S cinetone for super low light…Slog 3 struggles sometimes in extreme low light.
I need full dungeon comparisons. Go into the darkest sewer, and hit record. That's low light ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
did you use a denoiser plug in before exporting ?
you had the gmaster on the a74.... Gmaster is king... of course looks amazing and better than tamron lol.
