    I could easily watch a 30 min video of this lad.. I was wondering what would you think of doing something like... Reading out paragraphs from things in Irish and then translating them and stuff.. I find that kinda helpful and another good way to learn.

    Great video! Is there a general rule of thumb for changing the spelling of the adjective when using Níos? Te becomes teo

    • @fizziz_1035
      @fizziz_1035 2 роки тому +2

      I'm sure there are patterns but I would say that it is very intuitive.
      If you study the changes and how they change you will eventually get the hand if it.

    • @LearnIrish
      @LearnIrish  2 роки тому +2

      No real pattern as such but you need to be aware of the regular and irregular ones, for example these are regular but the likes of níos fearr and nios measa are irregular.

      Yes, there is, but a lot of the commonly-used adjectives do not follow it. The basic rule for making a comparative (or superlative) out of the basic form of the adjective is to slenderise the final vowel in the adjective (basically, add an -i or change into an -i) and then to add an -e on to the end. We saw this pattern in the video with fuar > fuaire (cold > colder) and ard > airde (high, tall > higher, taller). The rule was more consistently followed before the spelling reform of the 1940s and 1950s, which in some cases makes the application of the rule less obvious than it was before (e.g. crua > crua (used to be cruadh > cruaidhe) for hard > harder and tábhartach > tábhartaí (used to be tábhartach > tábhartaighe) for important > more important. A variant on the model is te > teo (used to be teth > teotha) for hot > hotter. Some adjectives are just irregular in the comparative (and superlative) and have to be learned accordingly, such as mór > mó (big > bigger) and maith > fearr (good > better).
      Incidentally, the níos particle is not part of the adjective (fuar > fuaire means cold > colder on its own, without anything more). However, it is often learned as part of the lesson on adjectives in the comparative because it is present before the adjective in its comparative form in many situations where you will want to use it, such as Tá an cárr seo níos daoire ná an cárr úd (This car is dearer than that car) or Tá sé ag éirí níos doirche (It’s getting darker). Níos is ultimately a contraction of ná + a + is (that + which + is). So, when you say, for example, Tá sé ag éirí níos fuaire (It’s getting colder), you are literally saying “It is becoming that which is colder”. Another of the subtle little ways in which Irish differs from English.
