    The main reason that most planets (the one of the Thousand Sons and the Night Lords excluded) "blew up" is called Lion El'Johnson , Primarch of the First Legion the Dark Angels . While he was prevented from returning to Terra by a warp storm , the Lion decided to eradicate all heretic legions planets to prevent them from recruiting new Marines that way .

    Simple explanation of Legion vs chapters.
    The god Emperor only had 20, uh 18 legions. Each numbered upwards of 250,000 Space Marines (minus casualties).
    After the Horus Herecy. Roboute Guilliman (Ultramarine Primarch) kinda hit the panic button that made the Imperium too vaunerable to Chao traitor. So he broke each Legion up into 1,000 man chapters.
    Now that Guilliman returned. He realized that stopped too many from falling, but also enabled Chaos to slowly eat away at the Imperium because a single chapter is sometimes too weak to defend against vastly armies. He's looking for a balance between the two now

    • @Souledex
      @Souledex 5 місяців тому

      Your numbers are wildly off. Only the Ultramarines had that many, and probably the Alpha Legion cause they had secret recruitment facilities all over the galaxy. The rest never got that big, some were way way smaller - like for a time the Emperors Children, and notably the Thousand Sons by the time they united with their primarch only had 1000 marines left due to mutation and other factors. In fact how many they are able to recruit and sustain is a massive part of each of their stories. Salamanders never had enough because they kept being spread incredibly thin behind the front line and fighting til the last man to protect civilians, the White Scars were originally the Star Hunters and were sent in very small scouting parties all over the galaxy, eventually without any support and often without return tickets this bled their numbers away while they sat on the sidelines to figure out what the hell was happening at the beginning of the heresy. Blood Angels have far fewer requirements for the genetic purity of their aspirants because their geneseed will purify and make them into angelic statues anyways- but its extremely painful and not many survive. Though because they could recruit from populations nobody else could on earth and elsewhere it bolstered their numbers during the crusade. Ultramarines had a stable geneseed, high success rate and 500 damn worlds to rule and recruit from - which is why they had so many, also because by the end of the Heresy they basically hadn't been in any of the big fights (because they were prevented from reaching them) by the time we get to the 1000 chapters of the 41st millenium around 2/3rds of all space marines are supposedly descended from Ultramarines (a decent number have forgotten or are descended from loyalist parts of legions that turned traitor that just claim to be Ultramarines sometimes originally with consent other times... its complicated.) and at least 40-50% probably are.

    • @Souledex
      @Souledex 5 місяців тому

      @@joesheridan9451 Yeah, the imperial army at the same time split into the ground forces run by the Imperial Guard and the Imperial Navy so no one command would control everything, ironically that actually is terrible for organization so in any important theater or crusade they will often appoint a Warmaster (called a High Solar or High Solar Admiral, for obvious reasons) to be overall commander of all forces in a sector. Though in general the inefficiencies and overlapping regions of authority are often by design to impede change - and the influence chaos can have quickly.

    • @jonathanryan9946
      @jonathanryan9946 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Souledex The numbers given were more than good enough for a beginner, as it is the upper known number during the Horus Herecy, after casualties and recruitment issues due to Primarchs wanting it from their home worlds and not always galaxy wide. Further we do know they were fighting long before that point and lost a lot of Astartes, look at the Rangdan Xenocides multiple legions were decimated by them before the Herecy.
      Further we know the Dark Angels also had over 200k also, besides given Ultramarine example you gave. A lot of the Legion numbers for other Legions are after the major losses. Heck, even the Iron Warriors who had the worst casualty rates of any legion were well over 150,000.
      Now it's true, Legions like the Salamanders only had 89,000 but that's in large part because they kept getting themselves killed. Or the Thousand Sons also due to similar disasters.
      However in all cases this doesn't rule out their peak potential numbers or hypothetical limits to their size. So stating 250k as a rough 101 simplified for a beginner is good enough information for now. She can learn the exceptions later.
      Yes, the recruitment planetes population and casualties will decrease their reinforcements as time goes on. That said, again that doesn't eliminate the Vat grown Legions the Emperor had made on Luna weren't higher. The absence of proof isn't proof of absence... and we only know the numbers after these casualties.

    The best way to explain the Alpha Legion is this: During the Horus Heresy Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fist, manages to corner Alpharius, one of the twin primarchs of the Alpha Legion, on the Fortress Moon of Hydra, near Pluto. There Dorn engage in combat with Alpharius and manages to kill him.
    During their childhood, Alpharius and Omegon liked to play pranks on other people by switching their names, they liked it so much that no one knew who was who, so, during the Horus Heresy Alpharius, who could have been his brother Omegon, was killed and so Omegon, who could have been Alpharius, took on Alpharius name to remember his brother. So you have Alpharius, who could be Omegon, who could be Alpharius leading the Alpha Legion into the Siege of Terra

      By 40k the main fighting forces are normal humans in the Imperial Guard, not even as well trained and equipped as the old auxilia and the Space Marines are rare elite troops. It's pretty unusual to even deploy an entire chapter and few chapters are actually at their nominal full strength.
      Some groups of chapters that all came from the same legion do closely cooperate and work together effectively making a larger force though.

    Ultramarines with Red Helmets stem from the 30K timeline. Originally the helmet identified censured marines that were caught studying Space Marine vs Space Marine combat, at the time it was considered bordering on treason. At Calth, when the Word Bearers attacked, And Thiel (the first red helmet) was awaiting censure by Guilliman aboard Maccrages's Honour. During the attack he gathered survivors onboard, raided Guilliman's own weapons museum and organized the defense against the Word Bearer's boarders and the daemon incursion onboard. Guilliman also recognized that Thiel had the right idea on thinking about how to fight the Legions and as such wanted the red helmet not to be a mark of shame anymore.

    • @lMarcusl
      @lMarcusl 5 місяців тому +2

      As a surface level fan of 40k, I honestly don't get how people can hate them so much. Like yeah, religious zealotry, in the real world, has caused and continues to cause harm to all of civilisation. So I imagine someone personally affected by those acts in real life would hate them. But without them, 40k would be so much lesser than it is now. If one could place all the blame for the Heresy squarely on WB's shoulders (funny how Word Bearers and Warner Brothers have the same initials...), then we should be thanking them for making the 40k universe so much more interesting. Having a unified Imperium would take so much from the setting. It's so much easier for the Imperium Stans out there to cheer for the Imperium when it's the underdog fighting the "good" fight.

    This is also due to Abaddon carefully stringing the gods along to keep them bickering with each other so they do not take control of his legion or even himself (like what happened to his gene father Horus)

Ultramarines interact quite often with the civilian population on their homeworld of Macragge because Ultramarines are not only warriors but also trained statesman and administrators and view civilians as the Emperor's subjects. 11:38 You are 200% right. The Ultramarines, since the Great Crusade, had one feature - they brought worlds to Harmony like no other Legion (maybe the Word Bearers, but they did not “cope with the schedule”, spending too much time on 1 world) - the Ultramarines rebuilt what was destroyed, ensuring that new worlds would blossom within months, leaving behind an enlightened, contented local population that did not feel defeated or harbor anger at the invaders. On the contrary, the population brought to Agreement precisely by the 13th quickly became exemplary in all respects and accepted the ideals of the Imperial Truth with open hands. They not only captured worlds, but also captured the minds and souls of local residents, filling them with new ideals, hopes for the best and common goals. This is the talent of the 13th and his primarch, the talent of organizers and conquerors, the talent of the creators of Empires populated by happy (to the extent accessible to 40k) people. Remember what the kingdom of Ultramar was like before the Heresy? The jewel in the Emperor's crown, the planets are wonderful places to live, with efficient production, a strong economy and labor productivity, advanced science and culture. The population of these worlds wanted to see the Emperor's dream and worked tirelessly to make it come true. The Ultramarines left behind a motivated (not broken) population, people who wanted to rise to the top, to create worlds worthy of the Emperor and Humanity, worlds and systems with sustainable development, competent organization and limitless prospects; worlds on which to live would be an honor in itself, and to die defending them would be a reward and a virtue.
    It is believed that the Realm of Ultramar and the worlds brought into Compliance by the Ultramarines were the closest to the Emperor's vision of what the Imperium of Man should be.
    The Ultramarines are rightly considered a kind of gold standard for all other Space Marine orders, as they can and should be according to His plan (well, and special orders in the form of Wolves/Bloods/Ravens/Iron Hands). They are noble and virtuous, selfless and persistent, faithful in thoughts and deeds. To the dismay of battle-brothers from some other orders, they do not disdain communication with ordinary people, but serve and die alongside the soldiers of any other military organizations of the Imperium. Guilliman's successor Chapters are the backbone of the Astartes, and have been the vanguard in the eternal war against traitors, aliens and daemons since the beginning of the Imperium.
    It is why, of more than a thousand Chapters, the blue-clad Ultramarines represent in the minds of the Emperor's countless billions all the principles of the Adeptus Astartes. Throughout the Emperor's dominions, the Ultramarines are known as heroic, effective, versatile, selfless, virtuous and noble defenders of humanity, and their deeds are recorded in tales across the Galaxy. And I forgot to say that their gene-seed is considered the purest and, according to rough estimates, about half of the orders are their direct heirs or created from their genetic material.
    If you (God forbid) found yourself in the 42nd millennium, you would prefer the protection and patronage of the ultramarines and would make every effort to help these famous warriors!
    I think it is clear that of all the Astartes, the Ultramarines are one of the main reasons the Imperium has survived these dark 10 thousand years, IMHO they have done more than any other Legion/Chapter to preserve the Imperium and the human race.
    Since the 8th edition, Guilliman is a gift and an example of an ideal regent-Emperor, effectively investing dwindling resources in the most “distressed” sectors/categories of the Imperium. He doesn’t sleep, but plows like Papa Carlo 24/365 and takes the rap for the entire Imperium.

  • @Metrion77

    So based on deep dive lore, one of the reasons why the ultramarines are so abundant is because they were supplanted by the 2nd and 11th legion after the primarchs were deleted from history. As the Emperor was in the height of his power, something about primarchs 2 and 11 failed in a big way. Infuriated by the potential embarrassment during the height of his conquest, the two primarchs were erased, and all records purged. Talking about them was a crime. Even the primarchs had their memories wiped. The 2nd and 11th legions were mindwiped and redistributed to other legions, but mostly to the Ultramarines since they were the legion that had the best logistics and could handle tripling in size.

    For a luetin vid i would recommend the creation of a space marine video. It goes through everything a potential recruit goes through right up to how they are actually modified, it will give you a really good idea of what a Space Mrine actually is because it might not be fully clear to you just how much they are above a normal human. Also Warrior Tier's video "Timeline of the 40K UNIVERSE by Trazyn the Infinite" is phenomenal video, Told from the perspective of a Necron archiever who lived through most of the history of the 40k universe

    The only thing (well, maybe not) more time consuming than creating a 40K video is creating and painting an army of miniatures. I'm about to paint 300 goblins and orcs for warhammer fantasy and the prospect threatens to give me piles. Big ones. What keeps me going is that my big local groups meets every Friday in the big local oldschool pub, where they do these battles. Pub+warhammer=charmingvibes.
    I finished college. Got a degree in sociology. F**K THAT! Well, I like the subject. But it's no biggie. There's no flex. Just stalled my future to learn some well-researched bits and bobs.

    11:10 You are 100% right, it's THE default space marine, like 70% chapters are direct descendants of Roboute Guilliman, he has the most stable gene seed and his sons are the most numerous. And he has build like a mini paradise of an empire inside the Imperium, 500 worlds of Ultramar (you've seen in Death of Hope - Lorgar and Angron trying to burn them to the ground), with a true meritocracy, good living conditions for normal people (!) and phenomenal production/military effectiveness, it's basically the glorious days of Western Roman Empire in space. The Emperor did said that Ultramar realm is based and that is what the whole Imperium should look like. And the Roboute Guilliman is like THE best character in 40k (he was a bit boring in 30k) from the story telling perspective, he SUFFER heavily seeing the current state of the Imperium and is so relatable with like XXI century normal people (you could his sadness/desperation/grief/apathy in X edition "new edition cinematic" where he narrates the fourth tyranid war). Have you ever seen an Atlas picture of a Greek titan carrying a whole sky on his mighty shoulders? That is Gulliman and he is carrying Imperium of Man SOLO on his back (now he has a second brother Lion El'Jonson to work with at least) as lord commander of the Imperium of Man:
    "Why do I still live? What more do You want from me? I gave everything I had to You, to them. Look what they've made of our dream. This bloated, rotting carcass of an empire is driven not by reason and hope but by fear, hate and ignorance. Better that we had all burned in the fires of Horus' ambition than live to see this." -Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines, reflecting upon the state of the Imperium of the 41st Millennium and his devotion to the Emperor of Mankind.
    And he has like the best books/novels in 40k fore newcomers (Dark Imperium trilogy and 3 short novels "gathering storm - rise of the primarch), I am 100% sure/convinced that Henry Cavill should play Guilliman in all 40k adaptation.
    P. S. and there is a meme in 40k fandom that Guilliman is THE only one who has a badass sexy necromancy eldar girlfriend Yvraine (emissar of aeldari god of the dead Ynnead) who had helped reincarnate him after 10k years of near death state in stasis after the losing battle vs Fulgrim. That all is a lie, but fan-drawings and memes can't be stopped xD

    Like, with Khorne you're just all combat all the time, with Tzenche you have to constantly be worried about being betrayed, and Slanesh sounds horrific as someone with sensory issues lol.
    Papa Nurg does legitimately love you, and takes away all of your pain and makes you immortal. Not even mentioning that nurglings are fucking adorable. You don't even give a single shit that you're rotting away and you see it from his point of view after you recieve his "gifts" 😅

So I just kinda take it like its one story in a galaxy thats so huge already... you cant wrap your head around ALL of it. The basic idea, then just kinda remember the stuff you like. You cant wrap your head around it all at once... its just too big. You can enjoy the pieces... and then the pieces kinda start forming an understanding. Ive been a fan for YEARS... I STILL find out cool things I didnt know! Really enjoying watching your vids on it. Its fun seeing someone find it and get into it. Dont stress the little details!

    If you want to put legions on an alignment chart, Ultramarines would probably be lawful good, salamanders neutral good, and space wolves chaotic good. Good here being a relative term. More like lawful friendly to chaotic arses. Iron hands are definitely lawful arses, imperial fists lawful neutral, white scars would fit chaotic neutral, etc.
    It's really hard to map each legion onto a separate alignment because they're by their nature all simultaneously similar and yet complete opposites. Blood angels and space wolves are chaotic good, white scars and raven guard are chaotic something, fists and ultras are lawful something, it's a mess

    Apparently... Guilliman chopped up the surviving Legions into smaller Chapters after the Horus Heresy, to prevent large numbers of Space Marines to turn traitor all at once because of their loyalty to their leader / Legion.
    Also... the Chapters (as well as Chaos Warbands, and other faction equivalents) allow players to create their own home-brewed Chapters without it being too weird lore-wise. Since there are like a bazillion Chapters and the main Legions can remain untouched.

    The World Eaters ABSOLUTELY kill each other. Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows...only that it flows. If no one else is available, sometimes World Eaters lose control and very cheerfully kill their own comrades.
    One of their characters...Kharn...actually has a rule in the WH40K game where he can actually do that...and he gets called The Betrayer specifically because he turned on his own side for what he considered to be cowardice.
    Bottom line...if you are fighting alongside the World Eaters...make sure you're on a different continent....

    A Legion was a force of roughly 80,000-200,000 marines under the command of their Primarch and due to the fall of merely 9 individuals it led to the heresy. In order to fix this Robutte Guilliman demanded that the loyalist legions (or what was left of them) split their forces into smaller groups called chapters that would consist of 1,000 marines.
    That way should a Chapter fall to chaos it would not be as bad since they would only have roughly 1,000 marines instead of 100,000.
    The Chaos Legions did something similar after the Heresy where they broke up into “warbands” with their own desires and fighting for their own survival or goals. The only traitor legion that still functions as a legion are the Word Bearers who are held together by their fanatical faith and religion.

    Other things about the Butcher's Nails of the Wolrd Eaters is that the legion accept to put the Nails to try to become closer to their father, but obviously it didn't worked.
    The Nails are not just giving pain when you feel other things that anger, but also product and give to your brain dopamine and serotonine when you kill, and when there is adrenaline in your blood.
    By the time, you will feel nothing ever that anger, or pleasure to kill people, no more fraternity, laughters.
    The pain of the Nails is pretty hard, even for a space marine. Angron had a ancient type of Nails, but the cells of his primach brain try to heal all the damage that cause the Nails, with the time, the period where he was able to think or to reasonnable were more and more smaller, so basically, it will killed him if he wasn't tranformed into a Chaos Daemon.
    Nails don't have only problems, it gives better reflexes, more speed and strength to the warrior who's wearing it.
    Another part is that when the combat is to intense, and the Nails hurts to much, it may happen that the warrior fall into the control of the Nails, so he will just kill everything that is in front of him, with no consideration of everything around him, dangers, traps, or killing friends or civilians. This is why the World Eaters were one of the most violent legion, with one the higher amount of losses in their side (marines or imperial guard), and collateral damage.
    Final part is that we may be think that the problems can be solve by removing the Butcher Nails, yes but no, because the Nails or connected with a lage part of the brain of the warrior's brain, especially the part who rule emotion, so if we removed them, you will just have an entire legion of vegetable space marines, or this will just kill the space marine. The Emperor tryed to remove the Butcher's Nails from Angron, but he never found a solution to remove them without making Angron just a litteraly mentally handicapped.
    I've finished, sorry if i did horrible grammar mistakes, and if i'm wrong about something correct me please
