Mic Level vs. Line Level Audio, what's the difference?

  • Correction:
    3:43 "Pro" Line Level = +4 dBu = 1.223 Volts (not 1.78 Volts)
What is Mic Level? What is Line Level?
The true and only difference between mic level and line level when it comes to audio signals. It's a very simple answer, but one that many audio technicians don't truly understand.

Thanks for this video. I've watched at least a dozen videos about this that were overly-complicated and went over my head. You were succinct and made it very approachable.

Well done. Good points and well presented. But, Besides the goof of +4 dBu = 1.78V rather than the 1.23V we know it to be, just a point of physics. Voltage does not run through the cables. Voltage is the difference in electrical pressure from one end of the cable to the other end that causes current to flow in the cable. But we know what you mean. Audio signals are voltages. And, In order to minimize the voltage drop across the cable, audio outputs are low impedance and inputs of the next piece of gear in the signal chain are high impedance. Basic voltage division.

Excellent. Now it's in my head: mic level way below line level.

This video, and the one about decibels, are both EXCELLENT- among the best if not THE best on their topics I was able to find. Got excited about seeing someone with a relatively low subscriber base making very well explained videos with exceptional production standards about music technology topics, but when I went to browse your uploads I found most of of your content is gear reviews. I mean, I’m sure they’re good videos, but I have terrible gear addiction, so I avoid product reviews, so this video and the decibels one is more interesting to me….I also noticed the videos on technical subjects seem to have more views…would you consider placing more emphasis on videos like this?

excellent channel all very well explained I ask you the Zoom H6 has line out output control is it an attenuator or is it just volume

  • @Mr.C0ffee

Great video! So, are Are the outputs on wireless mics (like the rode wireless, dji etc) line level?

  • @sidehustlefilms8007

Thumbs up! Is line level 0dBVU on a VU meter?

So i have a camera with two XLR inputs AND a Mic input (3.5mm jack). The controls on the camera has a switch for MIC or LINE. When i plug somerthing into my camera via the Mic input (3.5mm) is it best to use the LINE Level option?

Last night I was playing a gig at a club. Was using a tascam ta-1vp vocal processor. I plug my mic in it has a mic pre amp but then outputs a line level sound. The sound guy could not make my vocal not sound distorted. I’m thinking he had it set for a regular mic. What can I do to keep this from happening again? Tell sound guys to treat my vocal like a guitar input? Tell them it’s a line level audio and hope they can figure it out?

Even though the difference is indeed mostly just voltage, it’s important to note that AC power voltage isn’t deadly just because it’s a higher voltage but also because it’s a much higher current. If you had a 120V signal but 1 μA current running though your body you wouldn’t even feel it. Conversely, enough current at the right frequency you could die from 48V, like the phantom power supply that definitely cannot kill you lol

So... What would happen if I connected line level signal to mic input?
