- In association with Wyoming PBS, Raechel Donahue of Wild West Productions has produced, written and directed a documentary loosely based on the Peter Hassrick book "Drawn to Yellowstone," the story of how the art of Thomas Moran and the photography of William H. Jackson were used to persuade Congress to make Yellowstone into the world's first national park. Beginning with the native Americans who frequented the area, through the early expeditions in the 1800s and eventually traveling up to the present day, scholars and artists tell the story of this amazing 2.5 million acre wilderness and the incredible pull it has always held for artists of every kind.
I have been drawn to Yellowstone since I was little. I finally made after making a bucket list after getting diagnosed with breast cancer and melanoma cancer. It was everything and more. I never wanted to leave. I can't explain it. I felt as if I was home. ❤️

Hauntingly beautiful!! We went 26 years ago and think of it all the time, its siren keeps calling to come back! My ashes will be spread there so to be there forever!
I worked at Yellowstone in 1993 and 1993. I am back in 2020 and working in Mammoth.

visited Yellowstone Grand Canyon ,Grand Tetons Bryce and Zion last year from UK it was and amazing 2 weeks loved it it was much better then i ever imagined

Thank you. I finally got to visit Yellowstone in 2002 with some dear friends for my 50th Birthday. It had been a lifelong dream to visit there and I was not disappointed. I love that place. Wish I could have stayed longer. A great happy memory.

Career in DC-loved to see Moran and Beirstadg paintings in National Gallery (free) didn't know what I was looking at fast forward 20 years went to Wyoming for 4 weeks and drove around .
Came to the town of Moran and Cody and it all clicked those paintings I loved all those years were of our first National Park Yellowstone very special place must be seen
This wonderful episode has refreshed how lucky I’ve been living my life west. Always loved outdoors. At 16 in 1967 I run from home for summer, lied and said I was 18 and got a job in Canyon Village at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Oh my such a summer at 16 year old boy!!! Had a lot of firsts there!
Then in 1981 had the opportunity to work in another of most famous National Park the Grand Canyon work building on the school for the Supai Village. After watching this have I never felt so blessed working in the 2 top National Parks in America! And neither job was for the government, just private contractors. And a education that has done well ...

I'm a middle class American from California. In my 60's, and I've never been to Yellowstone. Everyone should see it before it ends up on a bucket list. Very interesting history here, and from an artists point of view.

I went the first time in 2020, took the whole family back in 2021, and were planning another trip for 2022 already.
Great advice sir! We might be unable to see the park son because volcanic activity might make it too unstable. That last time it erupted little in the park had a glacier on it because it was another 14,000 feet up. It's raising by about 2 feet per year now. So I bet we've got a long time but you never can tell with that kind of thing. I saw old faithful myself when I was a child. It hit every 30 minutes. Now it's not consistent at all. After the earthquake that hit in 2011 change the entire hotspot mechanics. The Pacific plate moved 200 ft to the east and it actually changed the tilt access of the Earth. Not where we can tell but our instruments can.
Been there at age 8 and 32. The latter ppl push in on the animals, I didn't dig that. Ugly tourist. Forestry mismanagement occurring in Cali and up the western seabord. Same w Mt and Western Yellowstone. Not climate change either!!!!
In 1916, my grandmother, Beatrice Boedefeld, a newspaper reporter from Elkhart, Indiana, took a job for the summer with the Wylie Camping Company as a tent cabin attendant at the camp near Daisy Geyser. Her diary, rewritten as a narrative, is now in the computer archives of the Historical Society Museum in West Yellowstone. The Museum is located in the former Union Pacific Railroad depot. The diary gives a glimpse into life in the park in the last year that the US Army was in charge and the stage coaches were still in use. The next year was when the NPS was established and the yellow tour buses were brought in. Bea took a lot of photos and they were scanned into the diary by my sister, Marci Wahlquist.
So cool to be a part of history and know so much about it.

MARVELOUS show! I was 9 yrs old in 1959, and we were there in July....back then there were TONS of bears all over the place. You could not go into the community restroom without a grizzly being inside and drinking from the commode. I saw it, I was there, it was real. I've heard now the bears have all been moved....but it was miraculous.. Thank you for taping and sharing this magnificent show.
I went in the mid-80s at 7 years old and yeah the bears were all moved to the other side of the river. But Buffalo still there. We literally pulled up just in time to watch that idiot get stomped to death because he wanted to let one. 83 I think was the year. They had plenty of squirrels! I did not get one night sleep because they were running across that stupid tin roof all night! I am telling it must have been there Olympics. I was chasing one and a Marmot jumped out and I thought it was the squirrel's daddy going to teach me a lesson. I never heard of a marmot at that age and it scared the crap out of me. Yellowstone was an amazing place. I grew up in Alaska so I have seen plenty of grizzly bears. I am glad I had a bathroom in my cabin, that grizzly in the bathroom would have scared me for life! One hell of a story so thanks for sharing it. I got a good laugh!
I finally made it there in June 2017 and seen grizzlies and black bears. I felt home ❤️

I cldnt agree more about eating Desserts 1st. I've had physical injuries as well after being such an active person my entire life. I have Always wanted to Travel myself, unfortunately I cant exactly do what I used to being that my 2 lower disc have slipped and was ranked 17% disabled(on my back neck & spine) 20 yrs ago. That was before finding out about the 2nd slipped disc. Though as long as I don't lift over 20 pounds its not nearly as bad nor as painful. Though for me its difficult for me to have to rely on others being how Independent I've always been.
I don't exactly although or let it stop me from living an active life as just two days ago I walked 4 & a half miles, I also love hiking swimming and kayaking as well.
I visited yellow stone national park two years ago. It was incredible I was in awe of all the beauty.
I've visited Yellowstone several times and still can't wait to get back there. If I had to pick one national park to visit, it would be Yellowstone. I would recommend it to everyone.

I love this documentary on Thomas Moran. Love the history and enjoy painting. Just purchased an easel from the estate of the late Carroll Westfall who was an art restoration artist and on it he restored several Thomas Moran paintings. He is considered one of the best Hudson River valley School painters. Let’s all work to preserve these incredible parks for our future generations to enjoy!

I'm a Californian, and I love the Yellowstone area, along with the Grand Tetons. I've been to Yellowstone more than Yosemite. Wonderful place. "God shed his grace on thee!"
I went to the park two weeks ago and it was so worth it. 16 hour drive there and back

Beautiful, love this video, thank you. If you have a chance and like rodeo, Cheyenne has Frontier Days. Usually 3rd week in July every year. Big Daddy of them all. (Rodeo). I took my 10y old and we had so much fun. I have family there so they showed us so much. Ski and snowmobile Tetons and Jackson Hole . This was one of most beautiful places and although winter it was wonderful. ♥️😘

I see he has put a few Sasquatch in his paintings, in the rock formations, in mountains, sceneries, all cleverly placed discreetly. Has other enthusiasts seen those Sasquatch in paintings? Have also 'seen' many in photos ion various sites, even in my many photos that I took throughout Yukon and B.C., colours of rocks, mixed with snow, shapes of trees, snow, directions of everything in my videos, pictures, many faces that I see, entertains me and our vehicle trips am I the only one who see those faces that are so plain to me or not?!? I remember the 1988 fires! I was a little kid. We could see the smoke from Minnesota. The sun was yellow. Mom wanted us to come inside and not breathe it in.
I remember we went thru there in 1988. It was burned, but it was still beautiful and the river was full of 🐟fish. It was on our way to S D from AK.
My dad took my siblings and I to Yellowstone in 1988. I remember seeing the fires up close and personal. There was only one entrance to the park open because of them
I grew up in Bozeman. I was 5 the year of the fires. I remember wondering if it would ever go out or just burn forever and keep spreading! The ground was black and the trees looked like old bones for years. It was devastating, but I do understand how naturally necessary it was. Every year since then in the late summer, I get a little nervous!

2015 I took my dream trip. I spent 3 months camping from Oklahoma to Idaho. Then all the way back home to South Carolina I am 72 now and would love to do it again. 🙃
Yellowstone is stunning. I went there a couple years ago. My favorite things were when my girlfriend and I went off the main spots.
Don't get me wrong, the main attractions there and beautiful and stunning.
There is something to discovering your own spot. Even barely off the main drags.
It's kind of disconcerting the amount of car traffic there for the individual but I understand that lots of other people also want to see the stuff you want to see.
Never saw so many Japanese people in my life though! lol. I had no idea how much of a draw the park has there.
I would love to be able to go. I had terminal throat level 4 Carcinoma only had 3 to 4 months to live back in 2014... but the Lord Jesus had other plans for me. I was blessed not to have a trachea in my
throat nor lose my ability to speak . I'm on social security only I'll be 70 yrs old January 30th 2022. But my fixed income barely gets me from

You haven't been to Hawaii? Just wait. If you think seeing so many Japanese people in Yellowstone was a shock. Hawaii, especially Oahu might as well be part of Japan. Its their play ground. Also, when people move to a different country, and take that country to be there's, regardless of how they got here, its there home too, they travel and appreciate the land possibly just a little more. Idk. Just a thought.

The LORD created this most beautiful land& many awesome landscapes in the USA like Niagara Falls, The Mighty redwoods, Volcanoes Sierra Dessert, and thousands of other wonderful views! The Sun, Moon, and the stars, ect. The Lord declared the handiwork of GOD. Man is without excuse to not get saved!

Thank-you for this documentary. Makes me want to go even more. Once this COVID Crisis is over, I want to visit from Australia.
I was in Yellowstone in 1988 at the lodge waiting for Old Faithful to erupt when park rangers came in and told us we had to leave the park as the fire was threatening the area. We tried several ways to get out to the south towards Jackson, but those roads were blocked. We finally found our way out up north to Gardiner and arrived very late with everything closed and with nothing to eat or drink all day. We in the car in heavy smoke just north of Gardiner by the river. The activity in the park was like a war zone with helicopters flying above and truck loads of firefighters rushing to new threatened areas. Trying to drive out, the wildlife was a hazard as it rushed across the road trying to find safety. We finally got to a restaurant in Livingston, but the smoke followed us all the way. We ended the day near Polson at a friend's place on the Flathead Lake.
Thomas Moran is a brilliant Artist.... superb use of light and in my opinion on par with Constable and Vermeer.... nothing but praise...
That is only his opinion. Bierstadt was a phenomenal painter. If you go the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California they have an impressive collection of Albert Bierstadt paintings. The Domes of Yosemite painting went on national tour in the 19th century. It was an epic event.

I am by no means an artist, but I found this amazing. What a great story of artists influencing the powers that be, to save this place for the generations to follow. The fact that their eyes and talents made it possible for millions of people to appreciate this special place.
At the time no one really knew that Yellowstone was one of the largest volcanos of the world. The landscape looked completely different 600,000 years earlier.

My Dad took the family there in 1977. Unforgettable! But I never thought it could be anything but a volcano; though "experts" at the time, said it was not.
My parents loaded six kids, I'm next to the youngest, fifth child, second son, in a station wagon pulling a trailer, as we did most summers, for a two week vacation touring the west. We spent only a couple of days in the park, but I remember it well. It is so spectacularly fascinating and gorgeously beautiful beyond words, one has to witness all its wonders and marvels with your own eyes to comprehend just how special of a place it is. Memories.......

If you have not been..... put this on the top of your bucket list.....and, less than 30 miles away is Henry's Fork. Some of the finest trout fishing in America and still very wild. The grizz has finally made it to the Fork so ....keep your head on a swivel.

I went a couple of days b4 the big fire then about 6 yrs after.. even though the devistated desature that caused it was amazing how mother nature had started repairing it... Got to see every animal there for the exception of the wolves.. but rare to see l also got to see a momma bear and her cubs.. anyone wanting a breath taking vacation you couldn't go wrong

Peter Coyote is arguably the best actor to master three medium. His seminal role as Yusef in the 1971 stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Bremen widely regarded by theatre buffs as legendary. He went on from there to star in over 200 TV and cinema productions. He is best known for his unique portrayal of Thaddeus in the 1984 film Children of the Corn 3 Pops Secret.
May have to scratch my head a bit, but think I used the same title for a 2nd grade book report. Yessir, first trip to Yellowstone they said I was 3. Now my teachers and parents could all agree wasn't very bright, but ever there was a book report or show-n-tell, had to retell my fractured memories a that first trip. Been to Yellowstone 8 times overall. Now that ain't much for all those with brand new RV's, campers and lifetime eagle passes, but how many got there hitch-hiking (x3) all the way from Detroit, MI. Once or more for practically every decade of my life. One time right after High School with a group of pals who wanted to see if it was all that. Another time for college credit doing winter-kill stats. Yessir, been drawn to Yellowstone. Last time got to go there with my grand-daughter same as I dragged her mom there kickin' n screamin' . Lucky her mom thought to invite me at the last minute.
Wish someone would drag me there. I've been trying to go for 2 decades.

Yes its a ticking classic time bomb however the whole Cascadia subduction zone from Baja to jaun de fuca plate to into canda is off the charts so much so that many seismic devices are not even turned on to hide they activities of the troubles underground

Spent a week there with three photo club friends. One of the friends won the grand prize for Unilever's , " Your picture of America" photo contest that became a 2000 Millennium edition National Park calendar. . The grand prize was a all expense paid trip ,for four , for a week to Yellow Stone . She also won one of the , 1st place shots for a new camera out fit ! One of the other friends she took along also won one of the 1st place shots...she too got a new camera outfit. It's a amazing place....I had no problem shooting 100 rolls of 36 ex. color slide film and 50 rolls of Ilford B+W...
Their winning shots were from Yosemite Nation Park, a photo trip they took the year before.
Ask the Park Service for a list of the missing people and see what they say

There are portals in these parks and that's how people disappear so quickly! I believe Yellowstone has something to do with The Underworld. They set these National Parks aside for the very purpose of taking people to mess with for their sick and disgusting experiments and cloning!

yea lots of YOGI's with cell phones now. Your ability to dial before your bear bait is pretty unrealistic. Better off carrying a 44mag and being of good aim, a bear head is about as hard as any I know. I have never stopped a bear with a head shot.

I haven't heard that narrator in a long time. I think that's Peter Coyote. Opening picture for this video is amazing because it's all yellow on the sides shows you how much sulfur is in the area from the eruptions. I hope we are a better species for our sake when it goes off again. It will wipe us out as we know it!

To my opinion of Moran's second painting was also fine but did not compare to his first. The second was overrun with the almost lime green of the trees which distracted from the rest. This color threw the earthy colors off. His first is magnificent!

I went to Niagara falls once. Once. If only it's beauty had been protected and preserved. Electric lines, billboards, commerce ruined it.
Sadly, Niagra Falls was ALWAYS pretty over-hyped: well, maybe except that time it froze solid, lol!! Its like the Mona Lisa: its a little tiny painting protected by 10 feet of bulletproof glass and surrounded by hordes of Japanese tourists :-=). Yellowstone, and indeed almost all of the major National Parks and wilderness areas, are still the Real Deal: only a few minutes away from the touristy areas, WilderNESS still survives, and its pretty darn AWESOME!!
It is an ugly town, cheap and tacky!
In my opinion they, Moran and Bierstadt , are both great artists. Unlike the artist commentator on here, who I finds Moran's work far superior to Bierstadts ... As a artist myself, I tend to enjoy Bierstads style .
