Eating at Terry Black’s Barbecue. Best BBQ in Dallas?

- I eat at and review the Dallas location of Terry Black’s BBQ in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of the city. Terry Black’s originally started in Austin, Texas, but later expanded to Dallas and is considered to be one of the most famous and best spots for barbecue in Dallas.

Will the real James Andrews please stand up? I never thought you were capable of getting full. 😉
Haha! Even my stomach has a limit. That was a lot!
James just needs to run more marathons.
Pecan Lodge is best BBQ in DFW sorry but the food looks good
Terry blacks? Barbeque? You spoiled us with this one James! :) Me and my friends really love watching your videos as a group, we always get together to share laughs, and good times. You truly are a wonderful window into a culinary world that some of us could never dream to visit. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! That makes me happy to hear and I really appreciate it!
You are the BEST part of Monday love your reviews.
Thank you so much! That really makes me happy to hear!
The ribs looked outstanding. The brisket looked dry for sure. I agree with you, brisket is the most inconsistent item at every BBQ place we've been to. Nice review, James. Thanks and Cheers.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I didn't have the best of luck with the brisket that day, but it was still a fine experience. Cheers!
You're a good goat James. Your channel has been growing on me for awhile now.
I'm normally grumpy and never subscribe to any channels. But you're now on my anemic subscription list!
Great job brother!
I wish you perfect health and 100 years!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
How fun. Dallas is such a great town. Love all the glass in the architecture. That BBQ looks 🔥.
Thank you! Indeed, I had a great time in Dallas! The city certainly has a lot to offer.
Thanks for taking us along! Looks amazing!! Has me craving bbq in NYC
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I wish there were more bbq spots in NYC.
I'm sure it's always fun for you to get back in the mindset of your certified barbecue judging days!
Haha! Indeed!
Always a pleasure to witness your culinary adventures no matter where you go. Very interesting & a well balanced review of a "hot spot" in Dallas! As usual, your well crafted use of words to describe your meal delights me greatly. It's simply a joy to watch you eat! Indeed, just what my Italian grandmother would always say! Thank you for sharing, this is Peter; out!
Thank you so much Peter! I'm glad that you enjoy it!
Welcome to Dallas, I live here! 🤠 If you ever get back, try "Pecan Lodge", it's in the same area, great BBQ
Thank you! I actually went to Pecan Lodge a few days after Terry Black's. I'll share my experience there in a future video.
@@JamesnuHope you got the burnt ends there
Agreed Pecan Lodge is rhe best in DFW
Love your videos, buddy! Keep up the content :)
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Hi James. That brisket looked so good. All of it looked amazing at Terry's. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! It was definitely a good meal.
I enjoy your channel brodie. Very professional and you seem to be quite genuine - I say that with confidence cause I’ve got a solid bs detector man immediately through camera and off. Stay being yourself, enjoy your food and your UA-cam journey. Stay consistent and if you feel it’s for you, enjoy the ride.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Loved this review! Hope to see more from Texas! 🥰
Thank you! Yeah, I've got a couple of more videos from my time in Dallas.
Hi James,
Thank you for your review of Terry Black’s BBQ. I was salivating halfway through the video!
As usual I really enjoy your commentary and the only thing I didn’t like was when it was over!
Have a great week,
Peter
Thank you so much Peter! It certainly was some tasty bbq! I hope you have a great week as well!
😋mmmm barbeque! yummmyyyy lol great video as always.
Thank you!
What a cool place! Thanks for another great review!!
Thanks for watching!
I really like watching your videos. This weekend I’m going to Little Rock, Arkansas, and then Las Vegas, Nevada; Arkansas is one of the four states that I have left to visit, and AEW has their double or nothing show.
There are many restaurants in Little Rock that I want to try out and I want to go to the heart attack grill in Las Vegas.
I’m starting to do I like watching your videos you do voice very well: you’re very informative, well practiced, and it really shows that you are confident and you put in the work to make yourself professional with your dialogue
I also really appreciate you giving facts about restaurants and also mentioning the prices, honestly with people turning to social media versus reading newspapers, you definitely mastered a food article/food review newspaper format into social media format.
I wish you all the best and it’s great watching your work. I would have to say that it seems like you become a master of your style. If you want to change things up, you have to think about is it worth changing the formula, I wouldn’t say it is, unless you wanna be experimental and try new ideas. The reason why I say this is because I think we were talking about a drone, but I could see you trying to do it and it may add to your cinematography, but it would be really unnecessary and pretentious. I think you have it all figured out with what works for your audience, so if you do this as long as you want to you’re always gonna get good views and be profitable.
My piece of advice and this will be a good one for you. Make sure you go to healthy food places because there’s not lot people that do that. in Connecticut there’s a UA-camr name Damien, who reviews McDonald’s and Burger King because they have interesting menus, but I’m definitely seeing a pattern of a lot of people eating food so there’s definitely a huge market, but it encourages your audience to consider restaurants, healthy outside of barbecue. For example I’m going to the heart attack in Las Vegas, but there are some smoothie shops in New Haven that I’ll definitely review and there’s just really great organic food place in Boston that I would love to go to.
I really appreciate your stuff, I’m definitely a student here and then also giving you any feedback that I think is helpful. I wish you all the best and if there’s anything that can give you to be better, I want to do that because you deserve all the success in the world.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I hope you have a great trip! I've been to Vegas and even went to the Heart Attack Grill which was pretty fun. I haven't been to Little Rock Yet.
Indeed, there are always ways for me and really anybody to improve the work they do. I feel like for my food reviews a drone wouldn't contribute much, but for travel vlogs, it can really add a lot. Maybe in the future I'll get one.
Yeah, there are some restaurants that are on the healthier side that I'm planning to check out. I think it's important to showcase a good variety of spots.
Terry Blacks is amazing its been years since ive been, glad you liked it!
Thank you! It's definitely a special place!
Hey James welcome to Dallas. Love your videos, if you ever come down here again I'd recommend Slow Bone BBQ for the best brisket in the city. Looking forward to the next video!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the recommendation and I hope I get the chance to try it sometime.
I wish someone looked at me the way James looks at food 😂❤
Haha!
Hi James writing to you from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹. I love your reviews.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
All of that food looks amazing
It was a good meal.
Soooo jealous, your meal😋 looks fantastic, I hope to make it here someday bbq is my absolute favorite food group!!
Very glad you enjoyed your trip and a wonderful meal 👍
Thank you! Indeed! BBQ is a great food group.
The Kimbell in nearby Fort Worth is a superb art museum, James. The Fort Worth Modern is next door, too, and has a great restaurant called The Modern. Try to visit!
I appreciate the recommendations! Sadly, I didn't get the chance to check out Fort Worth on that trip, but hopefully, I'll get there in the future.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! That's very kind and I really appreciate it!
I've had Terry Black's a couple times since they opened and I've never had a bad experience with their BBQ yet. You do have to keep in mind (for the brisket anyway) that it can be hit or miss not only because you may get meat that might have been sitting too long etc. it may not have enough fat in it. However, if you ask for fatty brisket and get it when they open or close to open it is incredible. The ribs are also stunningly good and as you said are usually perfectly cooked where the meat is NOT falling off the bone (which means the meat is overcooked if you didn't know). Their sausage and turkey are both super good also. Their sides are good, but can also be hit or miss if they are sitting too long or they aren't made as great as usual.
I would recommend going to Black's itself since it's been around since the early 1930's after all. Also, Franklin's is a must BBQ visit while in Texas. I'm sure you are already probably back in NYC, so maybe next time :D
For sure! Yeah, maybe the next time I'm in Texas, I'll plan a trip to Austin for bbq and maybe get over to Lockhart. It was great to experience Terry Black's but there's still so many bbq spots that I've got to try.
Glad you made it down here to Texas! I would beg to differ with the Black's - beef rib is king, not brisket! Also, from a dessert perspective, I would have gone with a piece of famous pecan pie. One day, try and make a road trip down to Lockhart - Black's and Kreuz' BBQ are there - they are the best in Texas! Great video!
Thank you so much! Yeah, their beef ribs look epic! Indeed, I definitely want to explore more of Texas for bbq. Hopefully, I'll get back there soon.
$60 for bbq served on a cafeteria tray.......hope it came with a pair of cowboy boots! Phoenix..... Richardson's!! Pork chop chorizo plate will wow you....$27. Timmy C Arizona
Haha! No boots unfortunately. Thanks for the recommendation!
James: glad you had a chance to eat bbq at Terry Black's! Those prices were like NYC stops!😅
Thank you! Yeah, it was pretty costly. Typically my wallet gets a bit of a break outside of NYC, but not for that meal.
oh! I'm in dallas. Hope you had fun in the city :D Traffic is horrendous, but this is probably the nicest time of the year.
Nice! I definitely had a great visit!
As a former Dallasite I would say that Dallas drivers border on the homocidal/suicidal. I do miss the restaurants though. ;)
Great review! There are some fun restaurants in Texas!
Thank you! Indeed, the state has a lot to offer.
Another excellent video james I have personally ate at this location it was some if the nest bbg I. Ate enjoy your trip look forward to seeing more😊 1:57
Thank you so much!
I must say it was too bad you weren't able to go to the original. I've watched Jolly's version of Terry Blacks and the way the food looked was super moist (especially the brisket), same on another channel with a family from New Zealand. I like sauce being offered on the table, it was a must at Tony Roma's since they didn't use any while cooking the baby back ribs, I'm not a fan of sweet BBQ sauce, I'm a vinegar savory kind, lol. At 35$ a pound, I'm looking for moist, lol. Thanks for taking us along.👍
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I've definitely got to check out the original someday. I think I just had some bad luck with the brisket during my meal.
Come to Cincinnati!! You’ll love it!
I hope to travel there someday.
That price is actually insane
Definitely! I probably should've gotten just one slice of brisket.
Not really. He got nearly a pound of brisket, over a half pound of ribs, two sides and a beer. Would’ve easily fed a man and woman on a night out.
Hey James! Really liked this one. I actually live in Austin now, and am all too familiar with Terry Black's. Apparently, the queue to wait for bbq here is 3 to 4 hours normally, so I think you may have dodged a bullet by going to the Dallas location! Enjoy the rest of your trip!! :)
Thank you so much! Yeah, it was definitely nice going straight up in line to order.
@@Jamesnu totally! As a Chicagoan, I will never understand why people wait so long and pay so much for this stuff! Don’t get me wrong, bbq is delicious and especially if done to perfection, but another part of me feels like $60 at a nice steakhouse would go a much longer way. Anyways, glad you enjoyed the meal nevertheless! And thanks for being so responsive to your comments, I really appreciate that about you
Cheers
Cheers!
It’s a home run also go down to Charleston sc you would love it a lot of James beard winners are there
That's definitely a place that I would like to travel to someday.
Very nice, brother!
Thanks! It felt great to eat some Texas bbq!
Hey James. Nice review. The ribs looked amazing. I agree that if the rub is good you don’t need to cover them in sauce. Perhaps the brisket was not as fresh as it should be but there shouldn’t be excuses I mean it’s bbq that’s what they do. Mac n cheese also looked nice. Glad you enjoyed overall. Have you tried Mighty Quinn’s NY? Thanks. 👋🏽
Thank you! Yeah, I've been to Mighty Quinn's a couple of times, I thought that it was pretty decent.
Good one, I'll be sure to check it out on my next opera trip to Dallas. Had great fish soup last time at La Calle Doce. In general I prefer Chinese BBQ meats to American BBQ. Have you ever had Thai sticky BBQ pork ribs? They're da bomb!!!
Thank you! Yeah, I've had Thai sticky pork ribs and they're amazing!
Hi James, isnt it fun to visit Texas? I went there about 8 years ago because my Mom wanted to go to Waco because she enjoyed watching Joanna Gaines (Fixer Upper). I was very surprised how cool and sophisticated it was. I wish I would have visited Dallas or Austin. Both look like great cities. The barbeque must have been so enjoyable. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Dallas.
Thank you so much! Indeed! I had such a great time in Dallas and I hope to visit again in the future.
I ate at that exact Terry Black's location when in Dallas in December. I agree the brisket was disappointing. Dry and I've had better even back home. For me the rib was better but only okay but I'm glad it was much better when you went. Agree that the sides are awesome!
Yeah, I just saw that you went there when you mentioned it in your Mighty Quinn's video. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about the brisket.
I've heard that Terry Black's is most known for their beef ribs, should definitely try that if you get the chance
I wanted to and planned on going back later in my trip, but I just didn't have the time.
Great video James. When you’re over there again try the beef ribs. I think the beef ribs are the best.
Thank you! Yeah, I was planning on getting one, but time caught up with me. Next time though.
I agree I’m surprised you didn’t try the beef ribs. That’s what they are famous for. Would get the beef ribs rather than the brisket.
You must try Salt lick !! In my humble opinion, I think it’s better haha. Great review nonetheless!!! I love terrys!
Thank you! I hope to be able to try Salt Lick sometime.
You're in my old home town! I moved to East Texas from Dallas 4 years ago. If you ever get a chance to go back to Terry Black's, I understand that their BEEF ribs are the standout dish of the place. Sadly I have not been myself. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed Dallas and I hope to return someday.
Great idea, finally some BBQ action. And I wanted to be first to comment.
Thanks for watching! I love bbq, and I definitely had to get some being in Dallas.
Great job on the review. Yeah BBQ prices are insane everywhere. Beef prices are ridiculous, along with inflation, the explosion in popularity of brisket Isn’t helping.
Love the SKX009 Pepsi, got one myself I currently have on a nato strap.
Thank you! Yeah, I bet the watch looks great on a nato strap!
I’m hungry but Texas brisket!
What is the brand of your wristwatch?
It's good stuff! My watch is the Seiko SKX009. It's my favorite watch.
Dallas is seriously one of the most boring cities I have ever been to. Love your videos, James!
Haha! Well, it's not NYC, but I still had a good time there. Thank you so much!
Good stuff.. enjoy your channel. I have noticed your watches are a bit too big for your wrist. looka like you should be avoiding anything over 40mm face wise.. try watches between 34-38MM and no doubt a Timex Marlin the 34MM reissue would look great on your wrist. Cheers.
Thank you! The Timex Marlin is a nice looking watch indeed!
Coming soon,Baby Back Shak, check this brother out! Memphis style all day baby!!
Try going a little west of Dallas to try Goldee's BBQ.
That's definitely a place I want to try in the future!
I was hurt he didn’t get the beef ribs. It’s the one cut that’s the most difficult to screw up at bbq places and the one cut I would recommend to any beginner bbq smokers
Next time.
With brisket you need to be careful when choosing slices. Did the carver ask you “lean or fatty”? This means do you want slices from the flat end or the point end. Flat will be very lean and tends to be dryer. Point is usually juicy. Note: this is applicable only when you’re eating at a BBQ joint that is highly skilled, which Terry Black’s most certainly is.
No, but to be fair, I should've been paying more attention. I was trying to make my order, but also filming bits at the counter for the video.
@@Jamesnu Understood. It’s easy to overlook when you’re in front of the slicer. Some people prefer “lean” brisket maybe thinking it’s healthier but the “fatty” is what foodies prefer which is also referred to as “moist” brisket.
I recommend visiting Cattleack BBQ next time you're in Dallas.
I appreciate the recommendation!
With smoked brisket, always order the fatty brisket. The lean brisket always tastes dry to me even though it is no dry.
I know what you mean. I usually go with the fatty brisket as well.
Terry Blacks menu- 1/2 brisket, 1/2 pork ribs, green corn, beans, banana pudding, washed down with Shiner Bock
That sounds like a good order.
What I learned from this is to go to their flagship spot in Austin. Hard to have quality control.
Indeed.
Go try the Hutchins bbq in Mckinney.
Thanks for the recommendation!
gotta go to goldees
Indeed! If I had more time on my trip, I definitely would've checked it out.
It looked very satisfiable. I’ve seen juicier brisket but I doubt that would disappoint. I also refrain from using too much BBQ sauce on Texas style BBQ.
Indeed! I enjoy a good sauce, but the meat should be able to stand on its own.
Will you be going to Goldees BBQ??? You're in the area so you have to go! Number 1 bbq in Texas!
I wish that I had the chance, but I've already returned home to NYC. Hopefully, I'll get back to the area someday.
Did I hear correctly, James saying two sides is too much food?
Yep, they're bigger than they look. Besides, I'd rather have another meat than a different side. Still, both were tasty sides at least.
Next time cross the street and go to The Pecan Loge. You will be glad you did.
I actually went to Pecan Lodge a few days later in my trip. I'll have a video of my experience there in the future.
I feel u pretty much, pretty hefty are living the dream. Keep on devouring delish stuff.
Thank you! Yeah, I'm very grateful for it!
Yeah..that brisket was not their best. I hope you had a chance to make it to The Salt Lick BBQ while in Texas. One of my EX GF from Texas actually brought me a full slab of ribs in her carry-on Luggage. Best gift I ever got.. Well one of the best...
Haha! No, unfortunately I didn't get to try Salt Lick on that trip, but hopefully I'll get a chance to go there in the future.
Now that is a true Mukbang, fabulous content❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
You’ll hear this once… and you’ll hear it again… Terry Blacks isn’t the best in Dallas… it’s the 2nd to the best in Austin.. but Hutchins BBQ is the best BBQ in DFW… followed by Cattleack… Hutchins BBQ is mind blowing.. that’s the REAL Texas experience… and order beef ribs bro. Order the turkey.. you won’t regret it.. and you’re in for a real treat at Hutchins when you try their desserts..
Thanks for the recommendations! I hope to get the chance to try some of those places someday.
You need to visit Kansas City, MO we have the best BBQ. 😊
I definitely hope to visit in the future.
Man, I'm going to have to take out a 401k loan to eat there..... 1 beef rib, 35 bucks..... 27 dollars for a sausage.
They should offer a scraps plate, all the bones and scraps people leave on the table.....
50 dollars per plate to suck on the left over bones and sides
It's expensive, but that price is by the pound so one sausage should be a lot less than 27 dollars.
A little pricy for bbq but looked good. Enjoy Dallas!
Thank you! Yeah, it was probably the most expensive bbq that I've ever had.
Andrew your such a happy guy Let me ask you why don't you review the Dinosaur BBQ in BK or Harlem
I should check it out. I went to the now sadly closed Dinosaur BBQ when there was a Chicago location and really enjoyed it.
I think whoever cooked the brisket for this day was either new, or they had a very hard time controlling the pit temp. The fat in the brisket was not fully rendered properly. It should not still look white and stringy like that. That's going to lend to a dryer meat. My guess is that they inconsistent pit temps, ran too low and then had to crank the heat at the end to get them done for the rest before service.
That could very well be the case.
After traveling that distance, should have compared against one or two other known establishments like Salt Lick
I know what you mean, but the problem was that Terry Black's was my first Texas bbq experience, so I really couldn't give a fair comparison.
Ask for slices from the fatty end when ordering brisket at a BBQ restaurant.
Indeed, but I've got to admit, I wasn't paying the best attention when I ordered.
@@Jamesnu ..grew up in Texas so ate a lot of brisket growing up.
If you ever get back to Dallas and go to Terry Blacks again..the best is when you have both fatty and lean pieces. There are flavor differences...
For a side, I would look for collards or a baked potato. Did not see either on their menu! 😕
Yeah, collards are one of my go-tos.
Ribs were the star. 🐖. Bet the original would have been better. Enjoy the trip.
Thank you! Yeah, I would love to check out the original someday.
Here for the skx
Haha! Thanks for watching!
Lonestar Beer is Bomb
It definitely quenched my thirst.
Great tasting beer
You should have asked for a cut from the fatty side of the brisket for more juiciness. You also missed getting their best item - beef rib
My original plan was to go back to Terry Black's on my last day in the city to get the beef rib, but unfortunately I just didn't have the time for it. Next time though.
Im surprised at the small tray of food you enjoyed. You missed out on the beef rib and a link of sausage
Next time! But that was more food than it looked like.
TX is all about its bbq, you are right this being terry's 2nd location, meat is always inconsistent. Not bad, but not the best Tx has to offer. Hopefully you visit again, there so many better bbq places....Hurtados, Goldess, Hutchins ,Zavala....hopefully you visit again!
Thank you! Indeed! There are so many more bbq spots in Texas that I hope to visit someday.
60 bucks for that? Its litterally 3 ribs and 2 cuts of brisket. I rather go and get me a HUGE fucking nice steak and grill it myself TWICE
Agreed 100% screw that
Rip off in my book.
Yeah, that was the most expensive bbq restaurant that I've ever been to.
i went to the dallas location in 2020
Nice!
Wow...+60 for that and then eating with a plastic fork and knife. Crazy!
snap!
Indeed!
Pepsi Rolex??😭😂
I wish! That's actually the Seiko SKX009, which is still a watch that I really enjoy.
idk man, 65 bucks and it's served on a plastic tray with a wax liner? Meat looks cold :(
And please all meat establishments - no more mac n cheese - at least taker a break for a couple years. Ugggh, it's everywhere lol.
But hey, if they Uber to Canada, then I'm in!
Yeah, it was costly, but the meat certainly wasn't cold at least.
I cooked at BBQ restaurant for a couple of decades in Atlanta GA. So I got burned out on BBQ and found myself actually spending a Lot of time at Indian restaurants. But I can tell you that if you walk up to a BBQ restaurant and don't smell smoking meat you might as well turn around because it is Not a BBQ restaurant! Hahahahahahahaha 😂!!!
I know what you mean. The smell is essential!
You gotta be Bill Gates to eat at a bbq joint these days
Haha! Yeah, it can get expensive.
TRUE !
Not bad for Texas. Come to North Carolina and we'll get you some real barbeque, though.
That's one place that I still really want to try bbq from. I hope to travel there soon.
Man if the sauce improved that brisket, that would be a major thumbs down on the brisket. Looks like you had a mix of lean/flat and fatty/point brisket. That can explain why it was dry.
Also surprised you didn't get the dino beef rib. That is what put Terry Black BBQ on the map.
I was planning on going back to get the beef rib, but unfortunately ran out of time. I think that was my only regret with my trip to Dallas.
BBQ, I can take it or leave it... its always so overpriced.. but I definitely fuck with some banana pudding. Magnolia Bakery is the place for that.
Indeed! Magnolia Bakery is perfect for banana pudding!
60 bucks for that portion.....Maybe once a decade for me
Yeah, it was pretty expensive.
Too much fat on the meat for me. Plus over $60 for that?! You didn’t really get that much. I’m surprised for Texas. Thought it would be cheaper.
It's more food than it appears to be. That's almost a pound and a half of meat and the two sides were pretty large.
Not sure what's thicker- the mac & cheese or that Chicago accent 😅
Haha!
That brisket did look dry. Hopefully it was just a one off bad brisket and not the norm there.
I feel that I was just unlucky with the brisket. Although the bottom slice of brisket I had was better than the top one.
@@Jamesnu Glad to hear you might have gotten at least one good piece of brisket. Thanks for responding! Really enjoy your videos!
@@PallerPrime Thank you!
Should of got a shiner bock
That would've worked too.
