The jarring contrast between the cartoonish violence of the Acrobat Silky fight against the hyperrealist violence of the debt collector scene dropped my jaw. My god, I was there in that room with them for a split second...I'm flabbergasted by the amount of detail that was put into this sequence, what an incredibly tender and heartbreaking episode from the lol-granny-took-my-bawlz anime 😭
Same here. That scene was so real and I was not prepared for it. You described it perfectly, I felt like I was there too. I was seriously concerned for the little girl for a second, asking where are they taking her (Eventhough we actually know it). How quiet it was all of the sudden after the door was closed... That shook me. Heck, I hate spoilers but after this episode I really needed to know if Momo and Ken would probably meet that girl later on during the series. Than I started bawling my eyes out again, after learning how the Manga ended in that chapter... Edit: typing mistakes
It evokes strong feelings of protection and helplessness from the viewer. Animes that rile up your feelings like this one, are the ones that become legends.
Adding a first person view to the final moments of the kidnapping was an inspired choice. You've spent this time learning about this loving family, but suddenly you ARE the mother, YOUR kid has been kidnapped and YOU are fighting through the pain and anguish, desperately clinging to hope as your world falls apart.
this is a minor detail but i LOVE that they drew the kid with baby fat on her body and face and the imperfect but confident movements only a young child could have. SO many anime often have children who dont act like, and more importantly dont LOOK like young children, so having her movement and face be so realistic really makes you believe "this child is REAL i could believe they were alive and happy and loved so much", and then the episode tears your heart out with it
Thank you for mentioning it! I literally gasped when i saw the child's design on the anime. My surprise may be just an overreaction, but given how many children are 'moe-ified' in anime these days, seeing a kid realistically designed like her is such a fresh breath of air
@blintzy6969 it obviously isn't, but we are talking about the daughter's physical appearance, which, in this case, it does look realistic for 'anime standards'
As soon as I finished this episode (after crying my eyes out of course), I immediately thought, "yeah Swamp Jawn is about to drop a banger analysis of this one."
The ballet feet pose callback was something I noticed immediately If only because the first one had so much focus put on it (and made me think "huh, so that's how ballerinas do that")
A reactor, FlexieJay, revealed that she is a professional ballerina and was deeply moved by this episode. All the dance movements were instantly recognisable by someone in that industry and noted that they clearly sourced their animation from a professional ballerina.
I wanna give a huge shoutout to Yuhki Kurihara, who arranged Kensuke Ushio’s backstory song for the orchestra and really did a lot to make it sound so tragic and powerful at the same time. Ushio was the mastermind behind the soundtrack, but Kurihara helped bring it to life in one of the defining moments of Dandadan and she deserves her flowers for it
This chapter/episode should be part of a writing class in character redemption. The exquisite of use the Acrobatic Silky tying into Aria's history was utterly masterful. And regardless of how fast it was, both their redemptions feel so complete and seamless.
I already knew that whatever had happened to AS was going to be tragic bc most yokai are created from horrible tragedy, but the second those sweeping angles showed up Ik something was coming; just not....THAT
I have a little 2 year old girl and this episode absolutely crushed me and my wife, near the end i couldnt muster anything but a "this is brutal" while i tried to hide the fact i was like 2 seconds from ugly crying😂
honestly watching this show has made me go "man I wish swamp jawn was doing analysis vids for this like he did for dungeon meshi" so many times, and while I don't think you have any obligation to do so, every time you make a video about the series I'm utterly delighted to see it.
What stood out to me amongst the rest of the beautifully crafted episode was a small cut and detail of AcroSilky’s timer vs the cooking timer they were using at home. It’s so heart-wrenching.
I was crying my eyes out after watching this episode, and I don't know whether it's because of my hormonal shift due to cancelling some meds I took or just the sheer heartbreaking sadness of the situation portrayed. I usually don't cry much...
While I do believe that hormonal changes can definetly impact a person this much, i think that the way this episode was directed was so mesmerizingly good, it is just inevitable not to cry. Dude, I hadn't cried this uglily since i was a child.
As a recently made new mom of a little girl, this episode absolutely wrecked me. To so carefully show their relationship alongside the mothers struggles with no words was so well done. Always appreciate your analysis videos for taking time to admire the artists and the small details that are easily missed when watching.
This episode show just how much more emotion motion and music (and great animation) can add to the story, even knowing what was to come this episode had me crying just by seeing they being a happy family and know the devastation that was to come. Also I think this is the point that Dandadan show that it can be more then just silly ghost and aliens after Ken's dick and balls, it probably what get people to trust the story there forward.
My bf wanted to skip it since we're manga readers and knew what was coming. But the fact that all my friends kept asking me if I'd seen that week's episode gave me pause. So glad we didn't overlook what we assumed was "just a flashback"

I was enjoying but not super enthusiastic about Dandadan before this episode, but it’s completely changed my attitude. It blew me away and hit so hard. I had goosebumps by the end.
Haven’t seen it animated but have to say that moments like this is what makes me love the manga. You rarely see a monster or alien kill someone, but the couple of times ( this and a few in future chapters) we see a person being killed is by another person. And every time it really takes its time grounding the reader in that reality. Going from funny haha and action packed to showing who te real monsters are takes a lot of skill.
Holy fuck, just watched the episode. I was bawling my eyes out, like I had to take multiple breaks during it. As i said on my previous comment I did read this in the manga, and it did hit hard there. Buy the animation, music, composing, and me forgetting much of what happened (I had completely forgotten the part where Aria hugs Silky) it broke me. I had to go out and take a walk. (Have to add that it was pretty jarring seeing all that and then seeing turbogranny cat plush dancing)
I wasn't strong for not being able to cry to this. I hated how I couldn't cry. I felt my humanity slip off with the rest of Acro Silky as she fell when I watched it. But I couldn't cry no matter how much I wanted to.

For the first time Jawn, I don't think I can watch an animation breakdown... I haven't had an episode of any media really break me the way this one did. So just leaving a comment for the algorithm and looking forward to next episodes breakdown. This episode was absolutely fantastic both in writing and the artistic choices and animation, but god damn is it a draining episode.
you mentioned in an earlier video you'd want some suggestions of shots from this show to break down animation-wise: I think one of the most awesome part of animation was at the end of episode 2, when Momo passes out and Okarun transforms and there's this shot of his glasses falling in front of her passed out body and it's only a few frames but I though that shot was so cool such a flex.
Oh damn, I knew this was a special episode but wow there's a lot I missed! This video makes me yearn for a whole series breakdown episode by episode, same as Dungeon Meshi. I completely understand why you won't tho
This wasn't even the only creative part made by the studio alone. The one where Ayase finds out Okarun's actual name is also more creative than the one from the book. They made sure her voice was more awkward and when she finds out his name is Ken Takakura the explosion of UFO, I mean, UAP in the background is synced perfectly.
It really was an amazing adaptation of a fairly short scene but I hate that they cut the shot of her last grand jeté off the roof's edge. Like you said it's easy to miss, and it was such an iconic, powerful panel, a literal dying swan dance!
The Artists working on that show give it their all. I can't wait to see, what they do with the other Backstories. The final jump could have been handled a bit more direct though. They added a "thud" sound to explain what happened, but the panel in the Manga, that showed her backwards dive was more understandable in terms of progression. Regardless, it is so cool to see them actually use the medium to enhance the adaption. It reminds me a lot of early MHA, before Studio Bones decided to just use the Manga as their Storyboard.
