      I definitely agree, but of course I would. When my cinematographer friends say it, or someone like yourself, says it, you really know it's true. Good sound is a hallmark of quality and credibility over most other things, bad sound = click aways and annoyed ears that won't come back. Thanks for bringing this up! -Joel from Spaces

    • @youtubecreators
      @youtubecreators  3 роки тому +1

      Great! Remember that pop filters only prevent "pops" from the puffs of air your voice makes when pronouncing "P"s and "B"s or perhaps if you are whistling, they don't effect the sound any other way. Those pops are a big problem so I'm not surprised you heard an improvement.

    That's the best tutorial I have seen (and heard) on treating a normal household room for improved audio quality. I have a couple of (possibly related) questions: I have a wooden desktop in my studio setting, and I'm guessing it causes a lot of echo and room noise when I try to use an overhead boom mic. Would a lower mic placement decrease this? Would the presence of books and small clutter on the desk break this up sufficiently?

    • @youtubecreators
      @youtubecreators  3 роки тому +6

      This is an excellent question and I am glad you asked it. -Sorry it's taken me so long to get to.
      Because the desktop is relatively close and relatively a small area compared tot he room at large, echo itself is not a big concern.
      Moving the mic lower may actually increase the room echo, off the ceiling for example. I encourage you to experiment.
      HOWEVER...
      What I didn't get into in the video is the concept of "phase cancelation" or "phase interference" and that is what you desktop is more likely doing to your sound. It is more subtle than room echo, but it does adversely effect your sound quality. An extreme example of phase cancellation is if you speak into your hands cupped in front of your mouth, that sort-of 'tin can' sound.
      If you want to guard against this you can use a semi soft desk pad. I use 1/8" foam rubber padding on our script stands at UA-cam for people making voiceovers.
      As you theorized, having clutter on your desk will also reduce phase cancelation/interference through "sound diffusion". The amount and surface complexity of the clutter will determine its effectiveness. In other words the opposite of flat surfaces, so books set upright: yes, books laid flat: not so much.
      A fifteen second acoustics course: Pillows and things absorb sound energy, whereas diffusion preserves sound energy, but breaks it up reducing that 'tin can' phase effect. Music recording studios make use of both these concepts, if you look at pictures of famous recording studios you will see both soft panels or curtains on the walls and ceiling and hard panels with complex patterns and surfaces. These are sometimes adjustable to change the 'sound' of the room to match the music being recorded.
      Whew! I hope this didn't overwhelm but it was such a good question I wanted to do it justice.

      I can't endorse any particular piece of gear, but I know that a lot of people have great success with this mic.
      As always, using it like a correctly/incorrectly can make the difference between good and bad sound.
      -Make sure the mic is about as close as your elbow can reach, make sure the front of the mic is facing your voice, the side with the "Volume" "Mute" controls, not the top as I have seen some folks do with these mics.
      -Be sure the levels are set for your loudest sound.
      -Some of these mics have a "Pattern" select on the back. Understand what these mean and how to use them. The pattern shaped like a heart is your safest bet.
