My grandfather born 1884, when age 3 in 1887 could remember not being tall enough to see the top.
I like that you bring up "do you like it?" "Do you wear it?", there is a value to that! My mother has several diamond rings that were handed down to her from my grandmother. One of them is probably worth a lot more than the other, but I really love the one that is worth less. I find it beautiful and I would wear it all the time. To me the one that has less monitary value actually is the more valuable of the two and the one it would make more sense for me to inherit.
Another amazing video! Your videos are so fun to watch and learn from! I loved how you encouraged the ladies to get themselves a matching bracelet when they get their diamond prongs checked. Lol Too funny!
ONLY bring your diamonds to a jeweler that you trust to have your jewelry secure or else the dishonest jeweler would switch your diamonds. It happens often. Be aware!!!
I had to sell many of my estate pieces 10 years ago when hard times hit and I was desperate for ready cash. These were quality items, and it broke my heart to find that the most value is in precious metals, NOT diamonds, unless they are a sizeable stone or fine quality. I had some nice diamonds too, they were not chips or substandard, I had paid thousands for them but received only a fraction of what I had paid second hand! But because gold value had gone up since I purchased the pieces I did very well on my heavy precious metals jewellery. I weighed everything before I sold it, so that I at least knew the basic scrap value at current prices. Sadly I had to sell most pieces to a jeweller for a quick sale, that's where I lost most money (and he was the fairest jeweller I found to sell to - some of them were real rip-off merchants). I did better when selling my jewellery at auction, because my items were big, bold, quirky pieces (eg a huge 18k link bracelet from the 1940s that weighed around 80 grams), and they attracted bidding wars from ladies like me who enjoy show stopping bling. I don't recommend selling your jewellery unless you are desperate, as I was at the time. There are few more soul destroying experiences than accepting peanuts for a beautiful diamond pendant, then walking past that jeweller's window next day and seeing it polished up and offered for sale for 6 times what they paid you for it! I always advise people to hang onto their treasures if they can because they are guaranteed to increase in value over time. Gold is a sound investment in my experience, and people will always want to own beautiful things. In my view the only down side to owning jewellery is the fear of being burgled. I never insured my jewellery collection because having collected so much over years, I simply couldn't afford the premiums! So I was very creative with hiding places for it.
This happened to my sister. Her engagement ring had a 4 ct burmese ruby in it worth $4000. She took it to a now defunct chain jewelry store and they switched the ruby out on her. She knew immediately as the stone had a very specific inclusion that she knew was there because she owned a jewelers loupe. She told the store she would be contacting a lawyer if she didn't get her specific ruby back. Took them more than a month, but she did finally get it back.

Loved this edition. One thing I remember in the last segment (Stinky fish pearl) is in a previous video, you discussed the fact that styles are more popular on anniversaries. When the 100th Anniversary comes along in about twenty-ish years, is there any way to estimate that increase in the value?
Dawn, no need to worry! Keep shopping :) There is plenty of stuff to find. There is always someone who throws away a valuable because they don't care to find out what they really have or they just don't care or have the time. It then ends up in a thrift store waiting for you to find it!!
You're right, people are much more clued up about vintage jewellery (and antiques generally) than they ever were, thanks to TV shows like 'The Antiques Roadshow' and I have to say, lovely media experts like Dr Lori! Ebay too has swallowed up many of the bargains that once would have lurked in thrift stores. I take heart from Dr Lori's promise that there are still a few gems to be found out there, both literally and metaphorically speaking!
@@glamdolly30 Thanks for the comment. Some might be clued in, but there are so many bargains out there, especially on eBay. How do I know? People are always bringing their finds to me at my events and I'm appraising their finds from photos submitted on my website. People are buying things online and at thrift stores and flipping them for my appraised values. It's actually easier now to find bargains since a lot is online.
@@DrLoriV Well I'm a big fan of Ebay estate jewellery, so that's reassuring to hear. I know I have bought quite a few bargains, which would have cost several times the price had I bought them new or from swanky second hand jewellery shops with big outgoings to maintain their shop fronts!
Yeah, greedy flippers are pricing out the people who actually need thrift items. Now, if you find something nice, it is either outrageously priced or a broken pos. Especially SA and GW.... They're the greediest of all considering they are GIVEN the items. There absolutely should be a legal percentage cap that non-profits can charge for items they are GIVEN, so that it is fair for everyone.
Hi Melissa, they miss a lot of stuff. I know because people shop there and then bring their finds to my events. Keep shopping for those finds everywhere :) Thanks for commenting!

Love you Lori! I have some earrings similar the first pearl set that I found at garage sale...paid maybe 5 bucks. Can't wait to show them and the video to my sceptical husband! Lol
It's amazing what there is in Canada too! Have found many treasures here where thrift shops did not know what they were. Best example, Dinh Van by cartier vintage 70s 18k gold necklace and pendant found in a 5 dollars in a mix up of random jewellery in a bag. Also nice Georg Jensen sterling brooches etc etc etc! Small samples of the treasures found! If you know what to look for you can do well!
Yes, Mary, the stuff is still out there. Why? Because there is always someone who just wants to throw stuff away without having me value it honestly for them :) Keep shopping!
@@DrLoriV Hey Dr Lori!! Thanks for commenting!! Love u!! Just to let you know I also get mad when I see dealers ripping off people. I have been to many a garage sale or estate sale and have found things mostly jewellery that i hand to the estate companies saying I wonder if owner meant to sell this. I have a problem with folk buying like that. I restrict my finds to thrift stores. Even then if there is a real find, I often mention it especially if the charity is one that does so much good for the community!! The pieces i mentioned were found in jewellery bag cast off lots!! Blessings to u for the New Year!!!
@@sunshine000000ful1 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. My point was that family members throw away other family members stuff when they pass away or they take it to the thrift store because they don't want to be bothered. I help those families settle estates, shoppers like you, the thrift stores who resell, estate sale sellers and dealers too.

@@DrLoriV Thank you for your reply. I will be in contact with you. I do have a question for you. If a stone in a ring has flea nips around the edge can it be repaired? I have researched this and cannot find any information on this type of repair. Thank you stay safe and happy! Wanda
I found a return to Tiffany and co. Necklace. I guess it's a necklace it's on a big chain and a pair Tiffany and Co. Earings at a thrift store but you can't get anything out of selling where I live.
Unfortunately then goodwill stores where I live right now stopped selling jewelry in stores. I asked one of their employees the reason behind that decision and I was told she didn’t know but I could still buy jewelry online. I guess goodwill wanted to sort what’s valuable from what’s junk and probably hired a group of experts to take care of that.
Can you educate me/ us about post earrings that are collectable/ vintage, I found a couple I love, they have the channel look, but no mark, so how do you ? Also do another video for those other ones that have no mark but it says JAPAN but have this 18 & 19 hundreds! Back clips!

Many people use my online appraisal reports to help them sell their pieces for my appraised values. The reports include a location where a similar item was sold and for how much. I also offer a lot of selling tips on my website.
My online appraisal reports show you where a buyer bought a similar piece for my appraised value. One client used my reports to sell a plate for over $1,000. They bought it at a yard sale for $1.

If coral is damaged or has a defect can it be repaired? Or would it need to be replaced? If so, how much would this impact the value of the piece (in this case a Victorian era ring)?
Good question! Any natural material, like coral, if damaged or replaced will impact the value of the piece. If the coral in a Victorian ring, circa 1837-1901, is replaced with a new piece of coral then the value would be reduced significantly. I can look at your ring to identify and value it if you like.
Good question to ask during my live videos. Have you watched my most recent video on looking at pearls using a loupe? Check it out at ua-cam.com/video/wnlULpQxLPM/v-deo.html
Thank you Dr. Lori! I am curious about the first pair of pearl earrings. What kind of backing did it have? Was it pierced, clip, if pierced what shape was it? A straight post? When did pierced earrings come into fashion?
The first pair of earrings had a straight back suitable for pierced ears. Pierced earrings date back to the ancient Egyptians. Mummified remains of some of the Egyptian pharaohs, including King Tut, had pierced ears.
@@DrLoriV Wow! I did not know that about the Egyptians. My mom was very squeamish about pierced ears. She had a negative opinion of them leading me to believe the were rather new. Plus my grandmothers had clip back earrings and most people my grandparents age that I had met. Thank Dr. Lori for being so generous in sharing your comedic style and wealth of knowledge!
Hello again! Been binge watching your videos on you tube. The 3 things that hold value you said were art, jewelry and furniture. Well I just came into possession of a ring. I bought a ring and wedding band for $500. The card from IGI says estimated for just the engagement ring retail is $4,265. I went to a local jewelry store and a wedding band similiar to one I have goes for $600-800 retail new. So the million dollar question I have is do you have any idea how I sell this ring for the most money? Jewelers are not interested at all in a used ring. The guy I purchased from said retail jewelers would only give him $400(ring is 14k white gold, so is band with half diamonds). I have tried eBay but only get offers for $825...so where do I sell for a thousand?(can I get 2 thousand?) Thanks.
@@DrLoriV was only my first impression. Some day I'll send a photo of what is said to be a hand made lamp of wood with green glass sides. Very old plug and light bulb inside. No marks on bottom only horribly scratched George Sinclair. A friend he worked with in manufacture of Winton Autos in Cleveland Ohio made it and George bought it.
Dr Lori, do you do valuations? I have a ring that I brought for cheap and have no idea of the stone/glass. It's set on 18ct gold but that's the end of my knowledge. When I brought it the lady said it was a purple amethyst but when you put it in Natural light it turn bright blue. Very unusual :-)

I could not take how crooked they all were...it now sits idle while my husband pays the tab...ouch !
PLUS YOU ARE THE BEST DEAL ON THE PLANET HANDS DOWN!!. I am gathering and photographing my collections/paintings ect... would NOT trust any one else....even if all of them were worth little to nothing..rather have an honest appraisal!!!

I remember Dr. Lori from Auction Kings TV show. 👏
Fun! Still in reruns!!
Loved this edition. One thing I remember in the last segment (Stinky fish pearl) is in a previous video, you discussed the fact that styles are more popular on anniversaries. When the 100th Anniversary comes along in about twenty-ish years, is there any way to estimate that increase in the value?
Kind of like the stock markets. Hard to predict how much in the future, but you know your Disney and Google stock are good investments. Make sense?
Thank YOU for educational video 💖🙏💖

Absolutely 🤗
Stop advertising thrift stores I can hardly find anything now! Everybody's going there and it's so cool now. LOL
I love when she roasts people
I roast people?
Goodwill picks through everything
Hi Melissa, they miss a lot of stuff. I know because people shop there and then bring their finds to my events. Keep shopping for those finds everywhere :) Thanks for commenting!

Love you Lori! I have some earrings similar the first pearl set that I found at garage sale...paid maybe 5 bucks. Can't wait to show them and the video to my sceptical husband! Lol
Love you! Thanks for subbing. Tread lightly with skeptical spouses if you are under stay at home orders :)
@@DrLoriV lets just say he is like leading a mule when its time to buy or sell.

How can you tell coral
Good question to ask during my next Ask Dr. Lori LIVE video.
There's a pewter pitcher sitting on the table when she puts down the Pearl earrings. I need to know about that item!
I can identify and value your pewter pitcher. Send me photos, schedule a video chat or bring it to one of my events!
I'm a little more educated now as always.....with every video thank you

No kidding about checking your prongs on rings! I just lost a diamond on a ring and it was a big one.
Oh I'm so sorry. Yes, checking the prongs is important. Sorry, I am sure you feel terrible about it. I feel for you.
Dr.Lori your so good! When bans are lifted do you think you'll make a visit to Washington state. I have two rings I would like your opinion! Or can you look at photos to I'd. What would you charge? I love to watch you in life when every is well and happy. Thank you Wanda

@@DrLoriV Thank you for your reply. I will be in contact with you. I do have a question for you. If a stone in a ring has flea nips around the edge can it be repaired? I have researched this and cannot find any information on this type of repair. Thank you stay safe and happy! Wanda
@@wandaneff5833 Nice to chat! With the ring, I'd have to see it to offer my thoughts.
I found a return to Tiffany and co. Necklace. I guess it's a necklace it's on a big chain and a pair Tiffany and Co. Earings at a thrift store but you can't get anything out of selling where I live.
Have you watched my videos about reselling? Read my tips on my website?
Unfortunately then goodwill stores where I live right now stopped selling jewelry in stores. I asked one of their employees the reason behind that decision and I was told she didn’t know but I could still buy jewelry online. I guess goodwill wanted to sort what’s valuable from what’s junk and probably hired a group of experts to take care of that.
Don't assume they hired experts. They haven't contacted me to help :) I help a lot of resellers.
Dr. Lori, what do you think of jewelry set in rhodium over sterling silver? A fan? No? Rhodium is close to platinum, yes?
And thanks for another marvelous video!
Overlay metals for jewelry remain popular with collectors
Can you educate me/ us about post earrings that are collectable/ vintage, I found a couple I love, they have the channel look, but no mark, so how do you ? Also do another video for those other ones that have no mark but it says JAPAN but have this 18 & 19 hundreds! Back clips!

How do I sell my finds in order to get the full value of them?
Many people use my online appraisal reports to help them sell their pieces for my appraised values. The reports include a location where a similar item was sold and for how much. I also offer a lot of selling tips on my website.
Thank you, but if I have antique jewelry, how can I sell them without risk and with adequate price?
Many use my online appraisal reports to help them sell pieces. The reports show you a location where a similar piece sold and for how much.
Who are the buyerS? Where to we go to Sell it for $2,ooo ?
My online appraisal reports show you where a buyer bought a similar piece for my appraised value. One client used my reports to sell a plate for over $1,000. They bought it at a yard sale for $1.
I love how you keep it real!! You are my favorite, and I just love watching your videos! I hope to meet you someday, and have you check out my thrift store finds!!!

Dr. Lori i love watching your videos. I have what i believe to have an early teacup and saucer made by Homer Laughlin, I believe it to from 1911 Empress E-1715, If i am reading the mark on the back correctly that is. I know that you are very busy, but your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome
So Dr.Lori, Question: are you saying that real pearls can all be the same size and color be the same on the same exact necklace ❓

Very interesting
Was there something that surprised you?
@@DrLoriV Thanks, I learned something about pearls made from fish bone, I did not know that until now.

How to find buyers for these type items?
I offer many videos on the channel about reselling, have articles on my website about reselling and even offer classes on the subject.
I found 2 sets of Vaseline dishes at a thrift store. 16 for BOTH sets.
Keep shopping! It's all there :)
Omg, I would have assumed that because those earrings had a newer type of ear hook, that they weren’t even old or vintage 😬.
Bill, I offer many selling tips on my website and blog. You may find those helpful.
Tiny photo of the coral looked like a chicken tenders serving from a no name deli. Glad to see it larger in photo.
