I have a Gamehide vest in orange that is used for birds and gun deer season. They are a damn fine hunting vest with a ton of room.

I wear vest every day during the cold fall and winter season. My vest of choice is the Stormy Kromer wool and waxed vest. Have had them over 5 years and daily wear for me on cold days,

Poachers pocket in the back, don't know if it's common in the US, but this'd be used for rabbits or small game in the UK.

I really like that game pocket! Better than them dripping on the side of my haversack 😂

I've started wearing my vest again this winter. I like that game pocket being water proof. Putting a wet pancho back in keeps the water from soaking through. Thanks for your video.

If you made that vest bright orange and added chest pockets you would have a surveyor's vest. I can see the utility of this vest for the woodsman because I wear a surveyor's vest every day at work for similar utility. I stash a full sized iPad and can of spray paint in the back, and various notepads, multitool, cell phone, markers, etc in the front pockets. I'm not a land surveyor, I work in water distribution, but these types of vests are ubiquitous in civil construction.
Generally speaking, utility vests really are brilliant things - they keep all your pocket gear up out of the way so you can climb, squat, kneel, and maneuver without having a bunch of bulk around your legs and hips. I find myself much more aware of valuables like cell phone and compass when they're up around my vital organs than in my pants pockets.

I have long wondered why a generic “survival vest is a subject that doesn’t get more discussion in Bushcraft, when it seems to be such an obvious and useful idea.
For myself, I got a really good price on a comfy, multi-pocketed twill vest from Bass Pro Shops only last year, and I’m eager to put it to the best use possible.

Nice vest Dave and yes they are certainly handy. I have been wearing a Kakadu vest, made in Australia, close to 12 years now and it qualifies as part of my kit, in the woodlands or everyday. Nice suggestion Dave for anyone wanting more out of their equipment.

I've used a wool surveyeers' vest. There are lots of pockets for things like compass and large back pocket. Plus, it's wool.

I have a game gamehide vest like that. After about 2 years those shell holders stretch out and you'll lose shells if your not careful. It is a really nice vest till that happens

  • @richstone2627

I like it. I had a vest very similar when I was a kid in the 70s. Mine looked just like yours except it was canvas and the shot shell holders were inside the pockets instead of outside. Other than those differences my vest was the same. Carried many a squirrel, rabbit, duck and grouse in the big pocket. I just might have to buy one like yours now that the nostalgia is kicking in. I like that tiger stripe jacket too but can't find one like yours. Thanks Dave.

I will recommend the gamehide mountain pass extreme vest. It doesn't have the same style game pouch, but it has lots of pockets that are very useful. Unfortunately I think they are only in blaze now. I bought several and have one in camo.

I like the vest as well. I picked up a Duluth flex fire hose vest last summer when I was in Tennessee. It has proven to be very useful. I now carry most of my sustainment gear in it. I find less need for the pack. On our elk hunt last month, I ditched the vest for a jacket with a similar pocket setup and again had all my sustainment gear in it. Temperature was in the single digits. With what I had with me, I was comfortable. Could function up to forty-eight hours without it being an issue. This includes carrying a garmin inreach. The vest or jacket does have some weight, but climbing through the brush is much easier without a pack. I find myself lately depending less on the pack in the field, with less gear. Ultra light puffies are great, but I prefer the more durable materials that don't rip and are fire resistant.

I have one my grandmother made me out of my desert bdu’s . I love it but it doesn’t have the water proof stuff in the back, so it’ll let blood trickle down your butt if it’s a close shot . Dad got excited once at a pheasant and shot it about 3 feet from the end of the barrel, took the whole back off and guess who’s vest it went in lol. That’s when I discovered that it wasn’t water proof lol.

Dave, could you make a video on how to gather firewood without a folding saw or an axe? In reality, most people would have only a folding knife with them. Knife is enough for starting a fire, but what about the fuel?

I like jackets that give you 1 or 2 extra pockets perfect for outdoors person ( but I'm not into vests since it leaves your arms cold ) I've had one or two leather jackets in my life and am thumbs up for leather I probably have enough pockets as it is but very handy to have few more

I have and use similar vests,
just not of that make. They
    probably aren't as durable either
I do have one of the old Ca**las Safari vests that is
a really good one, just doesn't
    have the classic game bag
pocket. It does have lots of
    pockets though, too many IMO
Thanks for the video and review
