These podcasts are golden! Super entertaining in addition to being very informative and concise, and such a unique format with two different cats on a similar musical wavelength with everything illustrated on the keyboard with visualization. Please don’t stop doing these!
Absolutely love this series guys, this is the most amazing and informative music podcast setup I've ever seen. Can't thank you enough for your work, it's very helpful!
You guys should do a battle like that previewing what you guys are going to talk about before every episode. It's a great anticipation to what you will teach us.
I first took piano lessons at age 7, and have never become as skilled as I feel I could, but you guys have inspired me to push toward that goal finally!
Hey Peter and Adam! I'm going back and listening to older episodes that I couldn't really grasp the first time around. (I'm glad to say that listening to you guys has really helped my ears and musicality overall, since things that were over my head two years ago are now understandable. ) I'm primarily a vocalist, and use a lot of your advice to apply to my vocal improvisation. Right now I'm hyper-focused on "BeBop Scales" and your aforementioned "Jazz Arpeggios"! I am enamored with the "Nifty" lines you lay out here, (and yes, I think "Nifty" is the appropriate word, haha. ) The "Double Dopio," is DOPE! That, and the Double Diminished Melodic Throwdown are things I'd like to master one day. Well, all of them, really. I do wish they were broken down a little more slowly since I'm singing them instead of playing, but if I put them on repeat I think they will sink in eventually. I know this is as older episode, and I don't know if you read the old comments, but I wanted to say how much pleasure and purpose I'm getting out of both your podcasts and videos. You guys also crack me up; you keep everything positive and light-hearted, not taking yourselves too seriously, but yet you're very serious about presenting quality content. One of these days, I'll get up the cojones to do a Speak Pipe question, but until then, I remain a loyal fan. ---Wilson
Hi, Peter and Adam- Just wanted to write and let you know how much I enjoy your podcasts/UA-cam videos. This was the first one I had ever watched of your You'll Hear It series, and have since then watched many, many more from the series and other series on UA-cam you both create. I appreciate your approach to teaching these concepts, and often try to put these techniques to use in my practicing. I also have and continue to recommend your videos to my students and other fellow musicians. I especially love seeing and hearing how much fun you both have in these videos. Witnessing your enjoyment is a testament to how much passion you both have for this music and for conveying it to your listeners/students. Please keep posting these videos! They are all fantastic and so engaging. Best regards, Ron
Man i watched this when it came out back in 2020, remember being mind blown, and been watching you guys ever since. This video kick started my journey with jazz piano and nowadays i can understand what they’re saying/playing unlike when i first watched this. Big thanks to y’all 👍
Thank you guys. I love your musical approach to teaching. The saying of the day is, 'You have to ge able to play on grid before you can play off the grid'. Thank you both. M.Nash
So much love for your work, i am truly oozing. So inspiring, so so grateful for you both. Bless x (you might get sick of my comments but im just trying to get the algorithm to pick up on these videos anyway i can)
Spaceman here. I'll own up to being one of the folks that talked about where to place chord tones rhythmically and strong beat weak beat. The more I listen, the more I see what Adam and Peter are saying about starting anywhere and not always lining up. But here's what that DOESN'T mean to someone still learning the bop language (such as me). That doesn't mean that you have the liberty to get lost and not know where the "1" of the measure is or the "3" or the "and's". Diz and Bird created a language that was incredibly rhythmic and rhythmically dependent. Each beat in a measure has a different sound, the "1" should sound different than the "and of 3". Here's where what Pete and Adam makes sense to me. The location in the measure or the phrase doesn't dictate the note choice. However, the location of the measure ("1st quarter" or "4th quarter, etc.) changes HOW those notes SOUND. Syncopation changes how a note sounds because the note operates in a time continuum. When you play chord tones on off beats, you get that stank face feel if you play em with enough moxie. Spacey enough for ya's? That's my take. Love ya both. Please listen to my You'll Heart It voice mail, I think ya'd get a kick outta it!
Yes that's an important point. You can play chord tones on the downbeats or the upbeats, but it's going to have a different sound and meaning. So you should be aware of it!
Love this! So glad I found your videos. The best Jazz resource ever! Also love the fact that slowing the videos down to hear the phrases more clearly makes it sound like you're both on Quaaludes 😉
What an incredible video. I've been practicing on my own and plateauing pretty hard lately. For some reason I keep coming back to Donna Lee because I feel like I'm nearly at the cusp of a breakthrough and I think you guys nailed it in this video. I totally get what you're saying about not sticking to the grid. I'm doing pretty well with some of the techniques. surround, chromatic, triplets, double diminished, but i think i need to get better at that part where I can float and grow that independence from the changes. I think that's the key piece of the pie I'm missing. I know I'm 2 years late to the party, but much appreciated.
10:13 "Would you get kicked out of the army if you tried some of these techniques?" "Oh yea yea, I don't think they allow bebop in the army anymore" lol, these guys are killin me!
Devo imparare da voi siccome usate la parola "doppio". Adam Maness...thinking of joining this course. Been playing for years and at 69 it's time for me to crank up my impro game. I do best when a super teacher hears me, sees my weaknesses, gives me something to practice, and then I practice, improve, and get ready for more. Will that Open Studio course offer me this? Usually there is too much material since most lessons will take me a week or so to assimilate. Let me know. I'm ready to study and learn more. Bless up...e in bocca al lupo...yeah, grew up in Napoli, Italy...e cche' v'aggia a ddicere!!!
Great stuff! I've copped all 4 opening examples since, mostly in just 2 groups of strings (I'm a guitar player), in about two fingerings. Still tons of stuff to absorb here.
Huh. Impressive episode today. Obviously you guys are great, knowledgeable players and all that, and I tune in on your videos from time to time. And mostly my reaction is a matter of, okay, drop-2s and diminished scales, whatever, nice, but yeah, yeah, yeah -- obviously teachers have to talk about this stuff for the general student, but not wholly news. This today, though, was genuinely deep insights and thinking. Nice. As for the Stevie Wonder record with the bebop keyboard lick: if it's an oldie but goodie, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, the song you may be thinking of is 'I'll Be Loving You Always' (IIRC, it's been decades) and that's because Herbie Hancock is guesting on that one.
"I don't think they allow be-bop in the army anymore." (!!!!!!!) That quote ALONE makes this a priceless video!!
I don’t get it
Tactic 1 - The Double Sorround ''Doppio'' 3:24
Tactic 2 - Chromatic! 7:00
Tactic 3 - Double Diminished Melodic Throwdown 8:51
Tactic 4 - Triplets 10:21
Tactic 5 - Half - Double Sorround 12:16
Tactic 6 - Diminished/Augmented Chromaticism 14:20
Tactic 7 - Delay the Harmony for the Melody 15:50
thankss
Is it based on a book?
Tactical bebop is definitely my favorite sub genre

Has world war 3 started?!?!
Because you guys are dropping the BOMBS!!

Absolutely love this series guys, this is the most amazing and informative music podcast setup I've ever seen. Can't thank you enough for your work, it's very helpful!
The intro was funny. I used to be a piano player in the Army 42R9N. Your content is worth more than gold to us!
There's enough meat in here for years of study. Thanks so much. Just hearing you guys play as you demo is good for your ears.
You guys should do a battle like that previewing what you guys are going to talk about before every episode. It's a great anticipation to what you will teach us.

12:04 tune is Joy Spring for anyone wondering
I first took piano lessons at age 7, and have never become as skilled as I feel I could, but you guys have inspired me to push toward that goal finally!

I've played bass for decades and the logic is so different than what you guys are talking about. it's mind blowing for me. thank you.
I can almost hear it and sus it out. I am saving this link for my practice sessions.
Thank you guys. I love your musical approach to teaching. The saying of the day is,

17:58 : I feel that it's more about tension...mother gives love and mother withholds love.

You guys are Awesome!!!!!
What a creative channel!!! Thanks guys!! Oh, you know, I've never really thought about the military / jazz connection!!
Yeah! More playing is much more better!!! Btw 16:50 is it really A flat major? Or F altered scale some kind?
He says it's F7, which is the 6 of A flat, he just substitutes dominate for minor.
Love you guys. I came back for a 4th time to thoroughly dissect.
Some really nice devices to launch in or out of here
these are fantastic conversations my guys, I'm gonna take my Otamatone playing to another level with these golden nuggets!

I love the opening theme. PDF please!
This was a great video as an intermediate player I was looking to advance my bed-pop skills.
One of the best episode ! Deploy now :)
Love this! So glad I found your videos. The best Jazz resource ever!
Also love the fact that slowing the videos down to hear the phrases more clearly makes it sound like you're both on Quaaludes 😉
how about including the transcriptions to the ideas. chromatics are too fast and obscure on piano.
Your videos make me wanna go practice. Much inspiration you give! (read in Yoda voice)

I love slowing the vids down. It’s like listening to Cheech and Chong teaching piano. Very entertaining
Peace
Very cool. I want a kitchen table like that.
I F@#$%KING LOVED THIS!
10:13 "Would you get kicked out of the army if you tried some of these techniques?"

First one! Love all of your videos!
Love Your School Im One Of Your Students Thanks.
Probably the best "educational" jazz video i've ever seen in youtube.
Im gonna binge watch all of your stuff!!!
Quadro dope e o was very nice!
They should use amusing midi patches when they demo things, like square waves, vibraphones and #such.
This is great

Mark Pontin I think you're referring to his tune "As" from SITKOL. One of my favorites from that amazing collection.
Brilliant lesson. What fingerings should I use to play the enclosures fast? Cheers
Is there a PDF of this?
Cool KDHX sticker on your laptop. Are you from St. Louis?
I love this channel so much. What do you guys think of Bill Charlap? I am getting really into him lately. He's fantastic.
Ok, confirmed.....it was a good episode!
What piano/keyboards are you guys using?
Had to subscribe {guitarist} So Dopio, Just this week I was trying to remember appoggiatura
12:08 is he playing a tune here?
Sounds like Joy Spring - Clifford Brown
@@thomassladden9077 Yes, thank you! I've played it years ago but couldn't remember its name now and it was bugging me so much!
Bird, Bebop, BBQ (and the Chiefs) “Kansas City here I come!” 🎶🎵
lovely! btw, you mention a funk tune where Stevie Wonder drops some beebop - any youtube links or song refs?
What name of intro tunes?
Is that an MAudio hammer88 keyboard there ?
Yup x2
@@OpenStudioJazz that keybed is a beauty ... saw with the red lights. Yall are legends btw thanks for the podcast
what kind of midi controllers do you guys use?
Check out all the gear used here: openstudio.helpscoutdocs.com/article/504-what-kind-of-keyboard-desk-do-you-use-for-youll-hear-it
