I am still very young and it is hard for me to deal with these dire prospects.
One feels so lonely. I feel a lot of human warmth in your videos despite the gloomy future, that feels good.

I've struggled with it and have found a lot of help and emotional sharing and support from living resilience website facilitated by another amazing person Dean Walker. I am now in several sharing groups which helps me process my feelings and move thro to gratitude of the now. Good luck to you

I just had some old friends react to my social media posts. They called or texted me in private. I had sent them your brief version Mr. Dowd. They went on to tell me that they are aware of inevitable collapse, but have a wife and kids to keep going as long as possible. This was validating, but shook me. I wonder how many others are bearing this weight in silence...

Just watched this again 2 years after I saw it the first time. In those two years I have gained much knowledge, regarding collapse, by following people like Nate Hagens, Tom Murphy, Erik Michaels, William Reese, the honest sorcerer (I still dont know who that is), Art Berman, Peter Joseph, etc. I was starting to get a sense that Michel Dowd was more for the beginners of collapse awareness.
But after watching this video again (and several of his other videos), and because my knowledge has increased so much since the last time I watched it.... I am having what feels like an epiphany... Mr Dowd had it all figured out! I think you can skip everyone else and go straight to Michael's content to get the most accurate story behind "how did we get here?" and "whats gonna happen next?"
The only nitpicking I can come up with is: I wish he had focused more on the evils of agriculture. And more talk about EROEI. Also, he should have dumped the phrases "anthropocentrism & human centeredness" and replaced it with "human supremacy".
But thats all I got. Miss you Michael. RIP

No where you find as much convincing information and arguments as you do here. You can also find solace in the way it is brought. The thing to worry about even more than the reactors is the spent fuel pools. It takes less than a week after the last power is lost before they are Chernobyl scale disasters. And since all reactors have a spent fuel pool adjacent to the reactors, that same time period is the time until any potential to deal with the reactor is entirely lost leading to double Chernobyl scale disasters.
Also, as is now clear from Ukraine, war is a driver for nuclear catastrophe at least six ways.
    1. Direct assault on the reactors or their controls or operators.
    2. Indirect assault by attacking the power systems.
    3. Indirect assault by preventing diesel fuel deliveries combined with loss of electric systems.
    4. Direct assault on spent fuel pools.
    5. Attack on and killing or excluding of operators.
    6. Use of “tactical” nuclear weapons.

The way through this for me is being called "non-duality". That the "I" is actually "just awareness" and not the thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions we experience that produce a false, egoic sense of an "I". Rather, those are all just other objects of awareness like a sofa. I also no longer believe in free will, which oddly makes it easier for me to have some compassion for those who have brought this doom down upon us and their denialist enablers.

I am cursed with being unable to deny the cold hard truths of the world. But I continue to believe there is considerable uncertainty in the when and how change occurs. Thank you for this important work Michael! Would you please clarify your position on activism? I accept that climate change, as a byproduct of ecological overshoot, is inevitable, but I am hoping that, if we push for a radical degrowth mindset, we can somehow SLOW IT DOWN so that my children can have a challenging but continued existence? To me, non-selfrighteous activism is love in action. -David (not quite cured of hope!)

    • @thegreatstory

I prefer "love-in-action" to "activism" (as I discuss in this video, twice) because many (most?) forms of activism are still fear and anger-based, in my experience. I always encourage people to find ways of actively contributing to the health and wellbeing of their communities - and sometimes that means doing all we can to halt, prevent, or limit future destruction and devastation. I am a big-hearted, full-throated support for your "push for radical degrowth"! Even though I think untold billions of human beings and other animals will die, and civilization will continue collapsing ever more noticeably and painfully, this decade (and next, if we're lucky).

I'm 68yrs young and it was through Guy Mcpherson, Jim Bendell and Paul Beckwith that first grabbed my attention during 2017. I have accepted that we are in the time of abrupt, irreversible climate change and near term collapse. I believe 2026 to be a pivotal year.! I did inform my family. I also continued to have, up until recently, another question concerning, if the 'elites' who are also very much more informed concerning inevitable and near term civilization collapse, why they just allow themselves to be knocked into a new Stoneage and probably followed by extinction. I think not! In order for a small remnant of civilization to continue on (to the Moon, Mars, etc) while at the same time saving as much infrastructure as possible) Wouldn't these intelligent sapiens have a 'Before Doomsday Plan'. Perhaps such a smart plan would also include dealing with the real problem of human overshoot. Would adjusting the population down to approx 200 MILLION be an alternative to extinction of all life on Earth. (Selection as per future requirements) And if They know our true and real predicament
Wouldn't the 'GOD' species know that their window of opportunity to act must begin soon, if as we are told 2026 may just be a few short years away?

There are many more than 6 mass extinctions. There are {arguably} six -great- mass extinctions. People can and do argue about the definition of -great-, and the number is most likely somewhere between 5 and 8 depending on that definitions.
However, arguing differently - this not the sixth great mass extinction (counting sequentially). This is the first or greatest mass extinction (measured by severity). The only difference is that we are in the run up stage looking forward guessing how high the peak severity will be, not on the far side looking backward to see how large the peak was.
We’re number one! We’re number one! And that is a truly horrible thing.

As I said on #2 and #4, no general collapse (due to climate, at least) and the extinctions will nearly all be of already rare and vulnerable species. Grin back acha, brother! "No general collapse (due to climate, at least)"?? What part of Heinberg's quote: "Climate is not our biggest predicament, ecological overshoot is" did you find hard to comprehend? Most tree SPECIES will go extinct in an already inevitable 4+C rise in average temp. #5 is way, WAY more dangerous than most people think, as (I suspect) is nuclear war and intentional release, as you say. Subject: RE: how much radiation
I’ve been involved in the anti-nuclear movement since I was a teenager over 4 decades ago. In Aotearoa NZ we managed to twist the arm of David Lange our prime minister who declared the country “Nuclear Free”.
The greatest threats of the collapse of industrial civilisation will be the end of food in the supermarkets, no more water at the tap and the melt down of 450 nuclear plants and the approximately 100 spent fuel pool fires. The loss of “Global Dimming” and it’s attendant cooling effect will also have a profound effect:
      guymcpherson.com/2019/10/the-aerosol-masking-effect-a-brief-overview/
We came very close to having two spent fuel pool fires at Fukushima Daiichi. They were avoided when firefighters sprayed salt water into the pools as they overheated and evaporated away the coolant water that needs to be chilled and circulated 24/7 until criticality abates in the fuel assemblies:
      www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08929882.2016.1235382
The fuel pellets are contained in Zirconium tubes. Zirconium is an alloy that burns at about 280C, highly likely in a spent fuel pool fire when loaded with hot uranium:

Dowd is to my mind an undoubtedly decent and caring man. I've struggled with these Post Doom discussions, particularly during moments of despair and fury at our predicament. But more specifically fury at those who are responsible for bringing us all to these desperate times. Capitalist greed and hubris predominantly on the part of white males have largely driven the processes that are destroying the paradise 'Mother Earth' gifted us. And therefore to have to listen to more white males discussing the destruction of our biosphere when men such as they caused this coming catastrophe, thinking they knew better - while indigenous people's have always tried to warn them - struck me as somewhat offensive. The West has not behaved at all wisely and with compassion, love and respect for our home planet. My mother, friends and partner are all white but I am the black step-father to my two white daughters. They will almost certainly suffer the consequences of the irrevocable damage done to their planet and their life chances.
In this video Dowd at last pays greater and more deserving homage both to a wider panoply of the forward-thinking and visionary female voices as well as a number of non-white indigenous voices. I'm deeply saddened to contemplate the coming collapse that will rob my beloved daughters of their promising futures. They both talk frequently about their hoped for careers and their other aspirations. My heart breaks for them, knowing what I know. But I must arrive at forgiveness in order to save me from the absolute fury I have felt towards the men who have brought us to our inevitable demise.
These discussions could yet assist me in coming to terms and finding that forgiveness.
