@@alistergoody6869 was going to say that. Length is not nearly the advantage pop culture says it is. There's a fine line between ooh and ouch. It's honestly kind of a drag being on the ouch side of the line.
Just to nitpick, a "combat" knife and a "fighting" knife are two different things. Combat knives are intended to be more all-round useful for soldiers in the field. Fighting knives are specialized for just that.
The reason for the top strap is: if you are in a low position the knife would stick out to the side and possibly snag something. If you are trying to be stealthy this is something you want to avoid.
I think the button clasp on is to keep it close to your leg when walking about in the woods through heavy brush so it doesn't get snagged on something. Just a thought.
That's a fighting/combat knife so the always add up redundant security like the snaps to be graded for "parachute user friendly" and have a chance in case of a military contract. At least that what they said about the useless security retainer on my Benchmade Adamas.
I think the snaps are there to keep the handle secure, so it doesn't catch on things. Walking through the brush for example. Great video! Welcome to Scotia.:)
"It has a thick, beefy kind of blade that can tank hard use." "You can put it in dripping wet." "I would like it if it was a little longer." And the pause-and-sigh was the best part. Somewhere Matt Easton's head is exploding.
Maybe it also helps with local regulations to visibly secure your sidearm in some location somewhere. Once buttoned, it'll take a few seconds to draw and anyone familiar with typical holsters will recognize that.
The business end of the knife seems to work fine, I don't think this knife was built to go "caveman" on random trees and rocks. But for an almost 300€ knife, I understand you not going easy on it.
I believe the inclusion of the snap closure in addition to the built in sheath retention is so that the sheath is qualified for securing the knife during parachuting. Not an expert, but I think to be jump rated, a sheath has to have two methods of retention.
It’s enlarged requiem. Requiem is not sharp at all, but as a dagger, it works. This ones size is even better but its not a dagger and not a multi function knife anymore, embracing positioning
Maybe it shouldn't have the pommel? I mean, if you have that thick of a steel then you should just go full tang. Or maybe make a triangular tip at the end of the tang itself.
When you disassembled it and I saw the tang vs the threads I was quite perplexed. If that tiny tread breaks then the blade is just going to go flying out of the handle. Like, why didn't they just extend it to an exposed tang?
I wonder why they just didn't go with a pinned grip with two scales, the threaded end is a massive weak point where stress would build with use. Looks pretty neat though.
The overall design of many Extrema Ratio fixed blades are nice, but the the screw tang that holda the pommel is a deal breaker. Other testers have had issues with it as well. For the cost of their knives this should be changed to a different design.
I suspect that the threading is not such a big deal; if I get things correctly, this is simply a threaded rod (I don't know the exact technical term for the material in question in English) that is threaded to that nub at the end of the tang (the little roundish thing seemingly cut out of it). If that is the case, that nub is actually meant to provide tension against the tang, and all of these parts are relatively easy to fix and repair with minimal cost and effort, which might be what they were going for.
as far as that screw is concerned... could you just outright remove it and seal the rubberized grip onto the tang with some apoxy? Also: Three components of camp gear. Knife, Hatchet/axe, and Machete
You were very polite. I would have scoffed loudly, particularly if I knew the price. Functionally, this is a very expensive copy of an old military surplus bayonet, not a practical knife. Thanks for the review.
I wanted to get one, but for $300+ to have a problem like that, I just couldn't justify getting it. I know they claimed that they updated it, if they are sending Skall the knife I trust that they did update it, but I can't help but feel that us people who don't have an audience would get the defective ones. I mean how else do they get rid of the defective blades
Not an issue, just don't use your knife as pickaxe. I have a cheap Ganzo with a gheoot version of this handle assembly. The screw is thinner and badly spot welded to the tang. I baton and chop away without a second thought and the screw is not damaged, the cap really just keeps the handle from slipping off the tang and the screw is not stressed as long as you use the knife end of the knife.
Make the handle a little longer. Put grooves on both edges and make the "pommel" bigger to screw on to those grooves. That I think would solve the main problem of this knife.
They did that because when you strip the bolt from cleaning it, you have nothing to replace it with. I get where you are coming from. Fox uses pommel ends with the bolt integral which is cool because you can simply change the balance using alternative threaded tips but... If you fuck up the interior thread you have no way to fix it easily except grinding it out to a new larger thread. So I can see why they did it like that. Good test man. Just ordered one of these.
If anyone is looking for a good outdoor splitting and survival knife, I recommend buying an old USMC ontario combat bayonet (OKC) These things are so good and sturdy that they will never fail you. They are on resale for about 100$ for a good one but they're by far the best outdoor workhorse Ive ever owned. The size is a bit much but I would certainly trust my life on it. I've impaled it and used it as a step even. You will not be disappointed. As for Combat knives I really like the SOG commando bowie. The size and sturdiness makes for an excellent fighting knife in every general situation. The blade shape makes stabbing and use very effective. For the size and price it's a great blade.
That "unnecessary retention strap" is for the benefit of airborne troops, who (in the US, and presumably elsewhere) are required to have two retention points on their blades.
Extrema Ratio knives are very well made and a bit expensive for the type of steel that they use . N690 is not even a powder steel and in that price range you can buy an excellent handmade knife from @Duloknives with superstreels like Elmax , M390, Vanadis4E and K390 .
I’m sure it’s been said but lengthening the stock a little and adding bolt on handle slabs would of improved this drastically. Hell, leave it the rubber slide on handle but make it bolt on through the tang. Jeez.
Light coat of epoxy on that tang, with blue locktite on the threads, and there is no problem. You can always put tennis wrap on the handle, of the worst happens.
I have an extreme ratio knock off that I got in a bazaar in Bagram while deployed. It definitely isn’t as good as the real deal, but considering they made a fake of a quality knife, it isn’t too bad in its own right, certainly not bad for $10.
Nice knife as for the belt loop and handle snapper things, cut the belt loop off and use the handle, holder, snappy things,,, to secure it to the belt, I know you shouldn't have to do this but personally I usually end up altering anything I buy like this, otherwise, good blade

Once a knife passes $100, it better be outrageously solid with no loose ends
Button clasp prevents the handle from sticking out and snagging on stuff in a tactical situation.
Maybe it also helps with local regulations to visibly secure your sidearm in some location somewhere. Once buttoned, it'll take a few seconds to draw and anyone familiar with typical holsters will recognize that.

The secondary double snap enclosure is to make it rated safe for parachute jump use.
The extra retention strap is probably so it’s “jump ready” for parachuting 🪂 👍🏼
