- Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh has apologised for the party's decision not to send a representative to a political debate in Mandarin, which was broadcast live nationally on Jul 1. He said the party could have done better and he is grateful for the support of Mandarin-speaking voters whom it has traditionally appealed to.

Are there a massive exodus of WP members due to the AHTC saga that causes no one to field on TV Chinese debate? Is WP don't care anymore for Chinese ed voters? Its not difficult to do it. WP simply has problems within. I am no scholar only have diploma and my spoken Mandarin is B- level at max but if you give me 5 years to prepare, I'd ace it. I don't even need to refer to handphone during the debate.
Jamus was the winner of the english debate. chinese is not an easy language to debate with and WP made the right choice

When PAP makes mistakes, they deny it and when you ask them why they made the mistake or refuse to apologise ,they will sue you. I think its time we stop giving PAP the power to bully singaporeans.

One of the favourite topics of the opposition is about fighting for the elderly being left behind. How can you claim to be standing up for them when you are not even willing to debate in the language they are most comfortable in speaking?

Actually it wasn't such a bad decision to not send anyone since the channel 8 and I think CNA debates were biased. Favour PAP by giving them 5 min while opposition only get 2.5 min per candidate 🙄.

I notice an article appeared on UA-cam in form video and the title is “ SG GE 2020 apologies for not representing to televised Mandarin.” The involved is WP. This is very disappointed for those who voted them into parliament. According WP’s leader, Mr. Pritam they do not have any MP who speaks fluent Mandarin. This is not a good excuse. To you need not send who can ver fluent Mandarin but a person who has a good presence of mind is most important. Look, people only want to hear how you rebut your opponent not how fluent you speak Mandarin. I think you as a leader of WP must think how to prevent making the same in future debate with your opponent. You all don't get it. It is not WP don't want to send a representative. It is because WP don't want to speak to Ong Ye Kung. OngYK stood for the PAP during 2011 GE at Aljunied GRC. He lost. I still remember the disappointment on this face when the TV news reported their lost. He was placed in a safe GRC during GE2015 and went into parliament now he talks like yayakalapa.

The media seems to make a big deal out of it but yet I cannot find it. English one can easily be found.

The problem is will you even vote them or not? I know a lot of westsiders are pro PAP and always let PAP win by a landslide such as Jurong GRC (not that there's anything wrong with Tharman, he's good), Marsiling Yew Tee GRC and Holland Bukit Timah GRC. So why would WP risk their resources and reputation fight for a place that is a loss cause such as yours? Everyone in Sg knows that West Side is filled with either rich people who don't give a damn about the politics in Sg because it doesnt affect them or people who are clueless or outdated as to what the opposition brings to the table. Thats why CSJ never wins. It is generally a graveyard for any opposition to get in. Edited and added comments - Im slowing recognizing my privilege (subtle or not) as a Chinese majority in Singapore and all I can do is to speak up for and against what is truly fair and just. I didnt get to be born a Chinese and so did anyone else. Long battle but if we all cared a little more, we might have hope at the end of the tunnel!

It's not that it's necessary but impactful if you want to reach out to elderly Chinese Singaporeans (which constitutes a huge % of voters). Nothing to do with race but making your party accessible to a bigger pool of voters.

You are talking to ordinary Singaporeans. You don't need someone with high proficiency in the Chinese language. Just use your heart to do the explanation. It is the sincerity that counts.

They do not have sincerity to manage serangoon estate efficiently and do not have the heart for residents. This was shocking as I was looking forward to see the debate after watching the English version. The Chinese-speaking Singaporeans are a huge voting bloc and many are frontline workers that WP prides itself to be a party to help workers. If they cannot find any leader to come and debate infront of national tv, how can they have a leader in parliament to debate in Chinese with other MPs as some debates in Parliament are in Chinese too. Even the other two smaller parties are able to send their people to debate. No point vote for them if they cannot debate.

It is always easy just to criticize and said can be done better. But when you gave them the Aljunied GRC to run, they did not run it well. Worse than when PAP runs it. They are good speakers but must improve in their standard of implementation, transparency and accoubtability. Singaporeans are getting smart and sharp. The era of say only is over. The GST still one of the lowest compare to Cambodia, Vietnam, Loas and Indonesia all with 10%, Philippines 12%, Developed countries like Australia and South Korea 10% and NZ 15%. Just hope that SG GST will not increase anymore.
