To this day it kills me that there wasn’t a Rachni fleet. It would have been the perfect pay off to sparing the Rachni queen in the first game!

    • @HailThanagor
      @HailThanagor 2 роки тому +148

Yeah, I definitely feel you on that one. A counterbalancing idea I've always held as head-canon is that the Rachni are the only reason the Crucible could be completed, especially when so many cycles and civilizations failed to construct it in time in eons past.
There is this powerful mental picture that is evoked in my mind of a Tyranid-like swarm, only bent to the sole purpose of collaborative construction, working in ways only comprehensible to a hive mind species. They were capable of taking the figurative blueprint wisps of the other races' engineering minds and were the hand that finally 'touched the face of God', if you will, in being able to just absolutely shred construction, evaluation, and improvement schedule expectations of any other race.
I love the idea, not just because of its aesthetic power, but because the legitimate rationale to get these two traditionally hostile camps - individualistic vs. hive mind races - into pregame perspectives that would legitimately give them a reason to work together, and in so doing, learn to genuinely respect one another through simply letting the proving qualities each possesses to speak for themselves. That sub-current is, to me, the stuff that makes fantasy so unbelievably powerful as a genre. Not only can alternatives and unexpected outcomes be explored freely, but often what comes out of genuinely good creative fantasy processes can't simply be termed a recombination of its constituent parts. Sure, Lord of the Rings can just sit unread as another book on the self - but any mind that reads it WILL KNOW they've just stumbled across something a crucial step above and apart. The idea of a Rachni empire with a legitimate place in the galaxy, a clear basis for respect and cooperation - it almost demands those who encounter the thought to explore further and delve into the worldbuilding of all the new experiences and possibilities that almost seem to leap into life of their own accord with such a uniquely matured blending.
Just realized I went on a massive tangent/rant - so apologies for that. Your comment rekindled a kindred feeling in me as well; I had to shape words to pour that inspiration into, haha.

@@HailThanagor It's a pretty cool idea, but I wasn't really surprised when they didn't show up. There's a fair 'in universe' reason to keep them out of the final fight, and that's their method of communication. They seem to communicate on the same frequencies that reaper indoctirination signals operate. Twice now we've seen the reapers utilize this against the galaxy by sining what the rachni call a 'sour note' that drives the rachni crazy; (i) the rachni war and (ii) the events of the third game.
Using their incredible ship making skills to finish the crucible made sense since it was built in a hidden location where they were out of reach of the reaper signal, but brining a large number of them up close to a massive reaper fleet seems like it would be tempting disaster and the allied forces of the galaxy likely thoght it wasn't worth the risk.

Let's face it, their attack vector was way off. They could have easily avoided the planet being behind their target. Space is vast AND 3-dimensional. The same applies to the fleet - all ships are well aligned (meaning all are similarly "up"). Makes little sense as there is no up and down in space... but I get it. It looks more orderly and having the earth behind the enemy and not just black space drives the threat home just so much more intensely.

You cant really do that in a war where your opponent can literally ignore your fighters. Gotta remember it took several salvos from the entire quarian fleet to kill off 1 low rank reaper. All the fighters in the galactic fleet would exhaust their ammunition 500 times over to take a single reaper out, assuming it's even possible to do it.
Putting the dreadnoughts in the back just means the reapers can just decimate your light spacecraft, and isolate the dreadnoughts.
A reaper cannon can tear dreadnoughts apart with just 1 blast, and even the largest reapers are more maneuverable than the nimblest dreadnought.
Even with a fully united galaxy fleet, it's a losing battle if you are trying to kill off all the reapers. The point of the fleet was only to escort the crucible to the citadel.
That's another point, the whole reason the fleet is their is to excort the crucible. Allowing the reapers to isolate your heavy hitters is also leaving the crucible open for attack.
Yes, in "conventional" space warfare, you have the space artillery pieces in the back, while the smaller ships do most of the knife fighting, but when a single reaper is able to cripple the 2 most powerful fleets in the galaxy (alliance and turian) normal warfare is literally the worst thing you can do

@@jimmycombs8159 true but the reapers own cannons have a medium range, even with there semi superior maneuverability of the capital ships, theyre cannons dont have long range capabilities and they're fighters dont take much to bring down.

The dreadnoughts need to get close because any missed shot has a high probability of hitting Earth. It's a common tactic used by planet-occupying forces so that attacking heavy hitters can't utilize their full potential

As far as I remember from Codex, Reapers have longer range than any organic ships. Turian fleet managed to destroy a number of bug Reapers by making a surprise massive approach of their fleet as close to Reaper forces as possible. Probably that's why united fleet is using the same tactic.

I get the whole emotional moment thing, but if the Pilot can just get up and turn around for about 20 seconds in the middle of this massive space battle and nothing bad happens then he really isn't doing much to begin with. Joker is lauded as this amazing pilot, but he apparently isn't even necessary.

I think it's because the Normandy is a stealth ship, so it's pretty much untouched on Reaper radar if Joker and Shepard didn't draw attention to themselves (like emitting a scanning signal on the Galaxy Map).
They showed multiple instances of the Normandy flying through combat space zones like it wasn't there (the Quarian-Geth war; and the final space battle).

In ME2 you can question why they even need Joker if EDI can drive the ship and react way faster than any organic, EDI says something like "We performed better on tests with Jeff's piloting" but it seems pretty clear that she is just trying to protect him to keep Joker around.
