Shower valve stuck, removed and repaired

- Shower valve seems to be stuck. I go through repairing, cleaning, maintaining shower valves. Due to limescale I had lots of problem opening and closing the shower tap. In addition, the shower tempreture control was very difficult to adjust. Walking through the processing of fixing both issues.

This actually worked!!! In a world of UA-cam rubbish, this video actually helped a complete novice fix their shower mixer. Thank you 😊
Two more tips, turn OFF the water feeds before you start and cover the plug hole so if you drop anything it won't be lost!
Hi Geoff. Excellent tips.
Thanks!
Nice and straight to the point without the unnecessary fluff of videos from other sources :)
Thanks mate
Thank you for making the mistake by not emptying the water. My Aqua Lisa cartridge was stuck solid and there isn’t much to grip on. After seeing your video, I turned the tap off, set the temp to full cold, put the temp dial screw back and reconnected the tap. I turned the cold water supply back on and then tried pulling the cartridge out by the screw. It worked! The water pressure did the trick.
Can you explain what you did? I don't follow you but my cartridge wont budge either and this sounds like a tip to get it moving
Thank you. Very helpful video.
Good luck
This is a good tip. I have one that is loose and one that is tight. Now I think I can fix it myself. Thank you!
Hopefully get a video out of it
This helped me today! As others have commented this is the one that does talk aboutvtje actual task. It is a bit tricky to reach this video though. The good thing about this is that shows the mistakes too which are pretty common when person enters the world of DIY.
Thank you glad it helped.
Good tip with the socket set thanks, need to try and get my flow valve off
Thanks for this excellent video. It has everything I needed to know to fix my shower valve mixer. More DIY video from you will be great! 👍👍👍👍
Great
Thanks for showing mate. This helped a lot. We have a very similar one which I managed to get to work again after months of barely being able to turn the temperature up or down.
Great tips thank you
Not a problem
Well done, your Alessia great at plumbing 👍 great job DIM TIPS!
Thanks Suzy as always
Very helpful, thank you :)
Glad it helped
🙏 bless for this video
Absolutely brilliant video and advice, mine went faulty on late Saturday 2 days before Christmas and was nowhere to buy a replacement one but thanks for this video as it worked a treat and is now working as it should
👍🏽
I'm glad it helped. have you managed to fix anything else?
Great video, I have a similar problem, my shower is only just 2 years old, the plumber I asked to repair only offered to replace with his recommended product that won't match the bath or sink taps. Not worth his time to repair I guess.
Good information
Not a problem
Great wee video, thanks for filming
I'm glad it helped. have you managed to fix anything else?
@@DIMTips I've got the parts ready to go but the shower seems to be behaving a bit better now so not got round to fitting.
Much better then the one I hade on board.
Cool
dziękuję za pomoc
Thanks i think
Great video mate, glad you out this up. Can I ask I've walkways wondered what the button on the temperature control knob is for?
It's to protect the user from accidentally selecting a hot setting so 38 degrees is the limit. If you want a hot shower then the user will cognitively select the higher temperature.
Yes it is and thanks for relying
@rafdannyboy gave a great response
😲now i know☺️
Yeap. Easy fix when you know how.
If you have an unvented cylinder, would turning the mains water off also stop the hot water? TIA
It did for me. But always check all taps before opening anything.
Thanks this feels fairly straightforward to follow even for an accountant... Have a question though pls!
I've got a system boiler, if I turn the cold water off at the mains, will it also turn the hot water feed off too, or do I need to empty the hot water tank via letting any hot water tap run?
KR
You should be fine. Just run the hot for a while and eventually pressure should be low enough. Did you manage to fix
@@DIMTips thanks for this. Yes sorted it finally. Thanks for your help, steer was very helpful
Great Video, very helpful, how long did you soak in vinegar?
I left for a few hours.
@@DIMTips “few hours”? 1,2 or 3 hours? Your answer is very vague. Please advise.
The rosy colour brass doesn’t matter.. it’s the new copper shining through. Good tip to descale.
Cool.
How can I get a replacement cartridge as I don't know the brand I have nor the part number. My cold water doesn't run and temp is all messed up on my shower so hope this will fix it
That may be tough. But if you know the brand it may be easier.
Nice video . May I ask what model is that ? Looks like it's similar to mine but not 100% what mine is is . Think ours is a Midas 100 contract model
I think someone calls it out in the comments
Would I be able to remove just the thermostat control valve with the water still on? Im not looking to remove the cartridge at this stage but just try and tighten it to see if it stops a small drip from the thermostat control.
Not a good idea
At 1.50 you popped off the thermo control collar with the end of a screwdriver. Can you get the cartridge out if this hasnt been removed first? Also my flow control cartridge will not budge! Any tips to get it moving?
A few people have tried vinegar. Seemed to do the trick. Any luck?
Do you have any tips for removing a stuck thermostatic cartridge?
The one I have hasn't been touched since it was installed in the house about 10 years ago, but it is stuck tight inside the mixer shower unit.
There are multiple types. Could you let me know what type. There is normally an Allen key screw holding it in place.
@@DIMTips Ah yeah, it's the midas 100, very similar in design to the one you show in your video. I removed the grub screw underneath with an allen key, but the cartridge remains firmly in place, it won't twist or pull straight out of the shower mixer bar.
It is a little tough to pull out. I actually had to use a combination of limescale remover followed by wd40 in the past.
@@DIMTips Did you have to turn off the mains water supply as well or can you do this without doing it? I rent my house and the temp isnt really getting hot so want to de-liescale the thermostatic Cartridge, but i dont know where the stop cock is and cant find it anywhere!!
The end that just controls the flow of water is just spinning ...would that be cos the plastic inner has lost its grooves that marry up to the thin brass end bit
Yeah. That can be replaced if you know the model and make.
I’ve just found out that when I turn the thermostat to the coldest position, my shower gives also warm water. Does it mean that it’s broken or should I calibrate the knop? We installed the bar just as it was from the factory. Thank you
Calibration may help
My temperature isn't working at all so after seeing this I'm off to get drenched 😅
Oh no. Hope it is sorted
I have a very similar unit in my bathroom and I have an extra question. You mentioned in the beginning of the video that the water pressure knob was loose - mine is acting a bit similar + it doesn't always completely shut off the water and I have to use a bit more force to turn it all the way into the closed position than I actually feel comfortable to do (I'm afraid that I'll break it off). Does it generally require just a clean from the limescale build-up, or is there some kind of a gasket inside that may require a replacement too? What's your opinion on this?
The washers/glands are cheap. So you could even replace the cartridge. Ebay has some good suppliers who you can call to confirm the exact cartridge
What size attachment did you use for your wrench please?
Will check but not always the same. Did you manage to fix
Hi mate you don’t know by chance the model number of this shower do you. I have the exact same but the chrome cap on the power has been stripped of thread on the inside so I will need a replacement. Thanks
Unfortunately not
My shower temperature gauge doesn’t seem to make any difference to the overall temp of the water. I can see cold water is getting to it as there is condensation on the top but no matter where it is the temperature is always the same.
If I remove the regulator how long should it soak in vinegar and is there anything else to look for? Thanks
That is a tough one. You may have an issue with your tempreture controller.
I have exactly same issue on very similar shower valve. The on/off just spins and doesnt do anything. You think stripping it down like this and clean will sort problem? Thanks
Hi, I have this problem. What did you do in the end? Thanks
Yes might be. Did you manage to fix?
Great video! What is the tool you used at the start of the video ?
Breaker bar.
Meant to say breaker bar or torque wrench with a socket. A spanner does the trick but may slip.
@@DIMTips Thanks!
Sorry I meant the tool used at 17 seconds?
Sorry, that is a leatherman multitool. Similar to a Swiss army knife. A very small screwdriver, should do the trick.
I never managed to remove the left valve from any of my thermostatic faucets. They must have been employing hulk to tighten them down. It's literally where it is more likely for me to rip off the whole faucet from the washbasin, before the valve would move just a millimeter. Also - remove the O-rings before descaling.
Hulk smash. Been there, done that
So in a nutshell you cleaned off the limescale. My water pressure (left hand side) is tight but after shower has ran for a couple seconds it frees off. I might have a go at mine
Did you manage to fix?
@@DIMTips for a bit then it did it again so just replaced it
@@Parkendnorth at lesdt it got you through for a bit
I have the same Aqualisa tap. My problem is it stopped working. No water comes out. It started with a very low pressure. Then now no water comes out at all. Is the cartridge that needs fixing? Is this easy to fix for a diy? I dont have a plumbing insurance they might charge me high
Might be limescale. Hope you managed to sort out
mine is just hand warm on the maximum setting, is there a solution for that?
When you move it past max does it change. Are other taps in your residence warmer?
sorry to be stupid but do you have to turn the water off to do this?
Absolutely. You have to turn the water off before doing this.
I just poored vinegar over the temperature valve and this loosened it enough so I could rotate it by hand
Great idea
2:10 I don't have an Allan key slot like that adjustment does, could mine be within the valve?
Yours is probably held in place by the servicing nut screwing in to the mixer body. Just ignore that there’s no grub screw.
Great response
You have your answer below from minot. Did you manage to fix
How can I turn the thermostat in a mixer shower down
Very easy. But need to ask is it beach the 38 setting not at right temperature. Or can you not move the thermostat at all.
Is there "effectively a rubber seal" or a rubber seal?
Yes. A little mumbling
I seem to have a similar problem with the temperature controller but there is no flap or pop out concealing a screw to remove it. The controller works between 35 and 38 and a button can be depressed but the controller will not move above 38. Have you any ideas, please?
We just moved into a flat and have the exact same problem - did you find a fix?
Hope toy managed to fix
Hope it got fixed.
The temperature control doesn't do anything for me even when turning the valve manually, any ideas? Its basically on hot constantly
Wonder if mechanism connected. Might be worth replacing
Sir wher it is available wall mixture cotrage
Ebay and screwfix.com
My bar shower is going hot and cold? Is this a boiler problem. Ive put a new bar on and its the same????
Might be, did you manage to fix
turned out it was the boiler, I got a separate guy in and he confirmed it so Baxi had to fix it and reimburse me
Great
My shower is either ice cold or only like warm when set all at the maximum, any suggestions?
Anyone else have the solution. Might be a failed seal
Wet a little bit of toilet roll and put it over the shower drain in case you drop your screws down it 😃👍
Great idea
