You get around to realising it's all about the song/music not just how many licks we all can consume.... great stuff.

Spanky and Sharkey are monsters every studying guitar player should get into. The D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, even some of the Maxwell stuff has great modern takes on traditional soul playing. Thanks for bringing this stuff to the forefront.

Another fine introduction to a guitar style/method. To many of us who don't have the time and the resources to check out all the myriad materials that are out there, your channel gives such valuable insights, and helps me, and I'm sure others, to pursue the avenues that pique my/our interests. Thanks Mikko for your inspired dedication!

Great video. This book is the only Neo Soul instructional book that I could find when I bought it a couple of years ago. There are some great songs and great instruction and it help show the techniques you need to have. I have worked for years on single-note lines. The left hand chord work dexterity was a bit of a shock and I found that I had work to do. Neo Soul, IMHO, has a dreamy quality to it that I am drawn to. Also, there are videos of the songs available. I believe the book has the links.

I always enjoy your "book reviews", Mikko. Problem is I'm running out of room for more books! Perhaps it's time to give some volumes away to make room for some newer books. This Neo Soul has a nice blend of elements from Gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz etc, while keeping it rather smooth. You've piqued my curiosity of this genre... although I've never liked labels, they do help in giving a general idea sometimes. The guitarists names and the links are appreciated... almost as much as your videos! :0) Cheers!

Great Video Mikko. Basically Neo Soul is Soul/RnB meets certain, and the key word here is certain, Jazz Harmony Concepts. Specifically Chords with Extended and Altered Degrees, Backcycling, Tritone Sub., Model Interchange, Chromatic Parallel. For anyone that's interested, check out D'Angelo, Maxwell, Jill Scott , Angie Stone, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, India Arie and Kandace Springs. Thanks.

Many of the "neo-soul" guitar players come from the gospel scene. Check out Isaiah Sharkey (D'Angelo), Erik Walls, Jubu Smith, and many more.

David T. Walker very much pioneered the "butterfly" stlye of playing. You can hear a good example of it on The Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye"

I really like the list you named because all those guitarists are actively involved in making real neo-soul records and playing live music . Big difference to the folk on iinstagram trying to stuff 20 major 7 arpeggios and passing chords in a 1 minute clip .
There isn't any space in their songs because they've never accompanied a singer or played with a bassist before

I don't dig this style too much but any style that explores the polyphonic capabilities of the guitar is a plus in my book.
They just have to NOT play just the two of us all the time.

Very nice, one thing I don’t dig is the overuse of the term bar that seems to be so prevalent. But stylistically I think it adds some beautiful colors.
