    This episode portraits the everyday life of the Canadian monk Phra Julien who lives in the mountains of Northern Thailand. To those who do not understand why the monk asks for food. Here is the explanation,the alms(process of begging for food) are the communities choice to oblige to and they even encourage it. They want to, then monks let them as it is chance for the community to do good. Many monks in monasteries work very hard, build their own houses et al.They can grow food just more convenient not to as they now have more time to meditate and read.
    Monks do not just perform empty rituals , everything they do must make sense to themselves. Some monasteries might make this a written guideline for new monks however for example this monk is alone and not answerable to anyone. He does it because it is a good thing not because he must.

    • @karanvasudeva5424
      @karanvasudeva5424 5 років тому +5

      Let's be honest, the communities' "choice" stems from the superstitious belief that by donating food to monks, the giver will earn merit and have a chance to be born into a deva-realm in their next rebirth. The propagation of this system of beliefs is what the monks take advantage of, sometimes from very poor people who can barely afford to give. If the monks are so hardworking, they should grow their own food and stop leeching off poor people. The extra time for reading and meditation benefits no one but the monks. If poor people didn't have to earn more to give to monks, they'd have the extra time to themselves and they could themselves use it to meditate and read. That would be a system that benefitted everyone, not just the monks.
      It's very nice for this guy to expound on true freedom, but he is not free. He is dependent on the people who donate food to him. Freedom is not easy. Freedom entails independence, and that entails hard work.

    • @evee9020
      @evee9020 5 років тому +3

      If you want to believe that monks are out to take advantage of communities and their intention is to mindlessly take from others, then that is your choice. You’re allowed to. This is not what I have seen or experienced. I have experienced monks working hard ( in physical work and academically) but we don’t all experience the same things. May you have a good life and happy thoughts🙏

    • @karanvasudeva5424
      @karanvasudeva5424 5 років тому +3

      @@evee9020 I didn't say the monks do it intentionally. They benefit from an established system. I simply don't see how the givers benefit. There is no such thing as merit towards favourable rebirth. What annoys me (and I know I'm allowed to be annoyed) is that the monks pretend they're free and above it all and living in harmony with nature. No, they depend on a parasitical relationship with the communities. There are other forest monks that truly are free and subsist on foraged and gathered foods alone, but the ones that go on alms rounds are not even close.

    • @andrewjonas6437
      @andrewjonas6437 5 років тому +4

      Karan Vasudeva giving alms has merits for the giver,equals to doing a good deed .doing good deeds one will get to have a rebirth in a better environment, family ,people .
      if monks behave that they higher than other people then that's earning bad deeds for themselves.
      if one is poor he she shouldn't give alms but take care of their family first. if he she gives food and has none for her family the bad consequences are on her him.

    • @karanvasudeva5424

As a Canadian myself, my gf would often send me stories and videos about Phra Julien and she considered him a model of the Buddhist way of life. Turned out that was not the case, because as you note, he broke the Thai Sangha rules and was fully aware of doing so. My comment was in relation to the fact that monks are expected to rise above desires of the flesh--to be able to control human desire--and while know that what he was doing was wrong (and would get him into trouble if discovered) he nevertheless continued to engage in this behaviour. That doesn't take away from the good he has done...
