Everyone in the comments seems to hate every Range Rover, so this vehicle is exactly what everyone expects. This vehicle will make everyone happy because people love to hate the Range Rover.
To be fair here; TFL have developed a much more “fair” and “objective” view on Land Rovers - since the “3 bad Defenders” narrative hit the keyboard warriors of the Internet - which really was “unfair” as the L663 has proved fairly reliable so far. This P38 is from the BMW/Ford era and does not have the best reputation. I am kind of curious to see where this project goes!
It’s the inverse of the Toyota\Hilux phenomenon (because specific models and configurations are bulletproof and last forever, many people think every Toyota is indestructible and immortal).
You don’t need a new hub to replace a stud; I’ve broken plenty of them when the nut seizes. Just pop the old one out with a hammer and push in a new one for $10, then the pressure from tightening the wheel nut seats the stud in place.
Yeah these guys specialty is more videos and not so much mechanical for sure. Most aren't though so no big deal. Sad part is they likely have a shop space that most of with wrench turning skills will never have.... See the videos skill is soo much more valuable in the end. They simply hire someone to sort it out and maka a video about it.
Fun challenge and not boring…and Roman clearly working hard to keep his grumpiness in check! Looking forward to updates on this one! I miss the days of headlight wipers!
Headlight wipers make sense with halogen headlights, but with LED’s you would need heated headlight defrosters or you end up destroying the wipers every winter and wearing out the motors every couple years.
A well-sorted P38 can fetch $10k-$13k. You snagged this one for $1k, so I'd say you got a steal! The interior looks great for its age. When it comes to car auctions, things usually sell for what they're worth. Whenever I see a car or truck selling well below market value, I just expect I'll make up the difference in parts and labor between it and a well-sorted one. The only way to come out ahead is to donate your own labor to fix it. You will never be able to pay someone else's labor cost and still come out ahead. The interior on this one looks like it's in great shape for its age. The headliner needs to be redone, but that's not uncommon for any 25-30 year-old car or truck. Sort it out, and with the miles it has on the clock, it's an $8,000 to maybe a $10,000 truck. So, you should have $5k-7kish of a parts budget to play with before you get into the red. Or you can go all the way and not worry about its flip price, and you'll have a pretty cool truck that's getting harder to find because people just aren't willing to keep them up. I'm lucky to live in such a rural county that we don't have emissions standards. I'd hate to live in a state that enforces urban emissions standards on its rural counties.
Ive owned one of these since new. Today, i still own it, even though its not my primary, it is still one of the best cars ive owned. Its by faaaaar better than my LC 76. This is a bit of an unfair review. This was a revolutionary car, it has features that modern cars are getting only now. It has one of the strongest body construction of a vehicle i have seen. Its absolutely brilliant. And if you looked after them, properly; using genuine parts, very reliable too. Its easy to take a poorly maintained vehicle and pull the piss out of it. This vehicle blew all competition out of the water when it came to tech and off road ability. 1 gearlever for both high and low range. Sensational.. traction control, brilliant. Even the air suspension, when properly maintained, is good. I've got nothing but praise for this car. And i own a LC now. Not for any reason that i sinply needed a different tyoe of vehicle for my daily activities, and fuel consumption on the RR is through the roof. But its a brilliant, brilliant piece of kit. High part costs from LR made a world of Poor aftermarket parts, coupled with poor service from dealerships, at the time, killed thier reliability and hence, poor value. A vehicle at the forefront of technology needs to be recognized and praised.
I agree with you. I had one for 8 years, and it took me through snow, rain, mountains many times. Probably the best car in the world with solid axels front and rear to drive. And an extremely good offroader. As an object for modifying, also very good.
They really aren't bad trucks. This one’s interior looks pretty good for its age. They are handsome, boxy rigs. If someone is willing to roll up their sleeves and do the work themselves, it’s worth the cost of parts to sort it out. The biggest problem with these rigs is they've gone through owners who thought they could just buy and drive them without proper maintenance. The same thing happened to the Range Rover Classic, but now well-sorted Classics can sell for upwards of $30k+. To me, the P38 looks like a proper Range Rover. I like the L322s as well, but they started getting a bit too posh for my taste-more luxury than truck. In my opinion, the new ones are a total travesty of what the brand used to be; they’re nothing but celebrity station wagons.
Park it in Union Station Sun Valley or the Civic Center in Denver with a "FOR SALE" sign and you'll double your money instantly. They are the ultimate status symbol in those neighborhoods! They are driven by semi-successful street pharmacists!
Happy New Year to the crew at TFL. Mahalo for entertaining so many of us who love four-wheel drive rigs and off-road driving. Andy McKane, 30 December 2024, Maunaloa, Hawaii.
This poor P38 has obviously fallen into the hands of folk who can’t maintain it and even worse, those who simply don’t care. Boy she’s had a hard last few years
Tommy the mechanic, looks like a good car to learn on! You can't make it any worse. 😄 I think you should get Kase over and make it a joint fixer-up project. I can just image what he would think of this one, haha 😄
In NY when the car is 25 years old it doesn't need to pass emissions! My 2000 Disco 2 is good to go in two days!!! Only 3 years left till my 2003 Disco 2 can pass lol!
I think you can find a hose at the auto parts store or hardware store that can replace the missing hose. As for that electric fan motor find a replacement that would work in that box.
We had a Land Rover S2 Discovery. That thing broke down every August. after 4 breakdowns we sold it. I was very happy that August to see it leave on the rollback.
Well, if you buy an abused and neglected Range Rover, don't blame the factory and the car, blame the previous owners. It is still a phenomenal offroader, and when it was new, no other brand had a Traction Control even close to the Range Rover.
I love how a Rangey drives and feels on the road but I've seen some of my friends go bankrupt with them. We have tons of SVRs catching dust in our neighborhoods in Saudi. People just at some point give up on fixing them and sell them because no one wants a broken RR. I actually at one point was tempted in buying a later model that was still under the 5 year warranty from a friend and when I went to test it. It started misfiring and the supercharger heat exchanger had a leak that was fixed by the dealer. I walked away.
Fun stuff! I don't want to start a Land Cruiser vs Range Rover thing, but my 2006 LC with over 200k miles looks almost new compared to your RR with just 160k miles! Everything works on my old LC, the carpets, leather, headliner are all still in great condition and the V8 runs perfectly (brakes work great too, but I needed to replace my ABS controller thing to be fair). Your Range Rover and my Land Cruiser are pretty much the same generation but the differences in longevity and quality are staggering. Happy New Year guys!
My friend from England bought a new range rover in 2000 or so , he said that it reminded him of home, beautiful car and interior but was completely gutless and would regularly blow head gasket,
You guys 😂 these cheap vehicles always bring a smile to my face. The best part about this is, you don't have to worry so much about dinging it up off-road. We're very used to you guys taking $85K rigs off-road and trying so hard not to ding them (I don't blame you, they're not yours). Is this going to be a cheap truck series? I love those 😂
I own a P38 4.6 and 2 x L322 4.4s and none have ever given me anything more than standard maintenance issues. I have also owned others in the past including classics and again, no major issues. Last year I drove one L322 from London to Prague and back with stops in Belgium, Germany, Austria and Holland with no issues at all, carrying 5 people and all their associated luggage. Having said that, I do regular maintenance myself, so if you buy a piece of unmaintained junk you need to live with it
You have to lift the hood all the way to close it. The strut locks in place. I know this because a bent one years ago when looking at a P38. Luckily the owner didn’t make me pay for that
I had one of these. Flooded it in a river. Ripped out interior, sent ECU for repair, put back together and worked like nothing. Obviously mine was better kept but I do not miss those classic interior chimes lol I miss the truck a lot.
Also replacing the wheelstud is a cheap fix, no need to replace the whole hub, just heat up the stud and punch it through, then push the new one in and a load of washers on the other side with a wheelnut, give it lots of ugga duggas and presto
Unfortunately chaps I purchased a P38 in 1998…. It was a 4.6 litre HSE V8….. with all the goodie’s!!!! Come 2020 the Range Rover is stuffed!!!! Everything failed!!!! I maintained it…… but alas it was a bridge too far for Land Rover!!! And unfortunately l paid $90,000.00 NZ$ for it!!!!! Still got it in storage….. but don’t know what to do with it!!! Yuletide felicitations….. and all the best for 2025!!!! Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿🥳🍸🍸
$1550? You paid that much? Second hand brake servo & cylinder in the UK is £150, the repair kit is £105.. (Bit of washing machine hose & a computer fan will fix the secondary ;-) ) Fun detail, When the P38 was launched there was a press day at the Solihull plant. A press car broke down at the gate, it's replacement didn't make the gate. The third one made it, the sunroof broke within a mile though.
Great video. Those window sync issues are a simple fix. Same with the hood release handle. Gotta say, I love the paint patina on the RR. I would drive that all day.
Have a P38 and love it. By far the most fun to drive (on and off road) then most other LR products, and I've pretty well owned them all at some stage. EAS great and works most of time. Btw, bonnet (hood) needs lifting first before close. Great when struts a bit tired :) Also, grill plastic was never black from factory.
Hahahahaha! Roman went into this eyes wide open! But now we get to see a rover live up to rover stereotypes on TFL! I don’t know why I find this so funny! Thanks guys! Ciao!
cruise control doesnt work because of the ABS/Brake faults. the radio isnt a Range Rover item, its aftermarket. windows generally you put them down, hold the button for about 3 seconds, then back to the top and again keep the button held for 3 seconds. the secondary air pump pipe thats missing, unless theres a sensor (not familiar with the US spec ones) it could be repaired with a simple chunk of rubber hose, snapped wheel stud can be bashed out with a hammer and punch and a new stud wound in using the wheel nuts. dont know what US prices are like, but im guessing the faults ive mentioned, if the brake master cylinder is $250, id guess the entire thing could be fixed for $400 of parts, unless the secondary air pump itself has also failed.
Roman, I agree, you were the one who kept upping the bid when Tommy wanted to stop 🤣🤣 But I like the idea of making it safe at least, then see what it can really do in Moab!! Budget off roader challenge!! Great content as always guys!
@TFLclassics You could probably register the Rangey in Utah at the Moab Condo you showed on the channel a while back, Grand county doesn’t do emissions testing. If that doesn’t work register in South Dakota.
We still own a 1995 P38 2.5 Turbo Diesel with a manual transmission it is used as a farm car here in Northern Europe, we have had it since 2003 at that point we bought it from an Auction very inexpensively because it had high miles , it has many problems like this but the engine is still strong but a little smoky , its never gets driven on the public roads and inside its very worn but it tows trailers and helps out on the farm all the time, it really is a tough vehicle but I would never take it on the public roads I think it would be dangerous. I like the car its like an old friend.
Bill Burr on his podcast just talked about how the guys on Top Gear used to piss on american cars when this is what the Brits are making. Bill used the Jaquar as an example.
Just buy a relatively decent one with a broken\missing sunroof and steering wheel, and combine the two to get a single good one for under $5k plus an outdoor guest bed to leave on the lawn. Might even be able to hardwire an on\off switch for the HVAC to get gas powered heat and AC in the guest bed.
What would be interesting is take this to your local certified Range Rover mechanic and I want to see a full repair bill to get this car back to green across the board. That would be very interesting to see and understand.
Perfect body for offroading. Who cares about pinstripes on that. And mostly rust free. A thought, if the secondary air injector motor has burnt out, and it's a cheap project anyway, why not try to find a replacement motor. More faff, but I think it's probably easier and a heck of a lot cheaper to find a motor with similar voltage and power and make it fit compared to the entire assembly. And I'm sure an entire entertaining video can be done just with watching Tommy to that.
it never occurred to me to publish my bad car buying decisions to youtube for money. i think its far too late now, and honestly, having had a p38, i dont think i could do worse than that, again, anyway. I don't hate range rovers, actually i love them; what I hate is how unreliable they are. I once drove one out of a snowdrift that completely covered it simply by putting it in drive. Also, love how when it says 'POV cam' its actually the guy in the back seat. I blame the range rover.
Ya know....for 4600 kinda woulda been better to get that one. I personally would still enjoy that series of videos! I always wanted but never owned a P38 and would enjoy seeing a functioning one make it to Moab and do CO trails.
Man, I thought my state sucked for its mission control policies, but y’all have a 2001 and still have to get it emissions passed?? that’s pretty dang sad! I’m in North Carolina, which has always had stupid inspection rules, but at least once a vehicle is 20 years old, it drops to a safety only.
overall P38 is a good truck. Just find a good one. cylinder liners may fail around 250-300K but just do LS7 swap and drive it forever instead of fixing old engine. same for suspension if it fails just get a Truck performance kit on it and happy days
Tommy Mica... with power tools. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Although he has Case to back him up. lol. Tommy and Roman are in for a learning experience. Toby will say, "What have you done?" Good luck guys, you will need it.
Anytime any $1500 luxury SUV starts and runs I consider it a win. I had a grand cherokee with the same miles that was quite special. I never did figure out how it passed inspection in Rhode Island but it did.
I think the problem with this video, is how dismissive they're being about a vehicle that would actually be highly desirable to lots of people even in this condition ... People who aren't lucky enough to be able to afford new luxury cars...
Honestly, it looks like it has very few problems, most being cosmetic. Worth fixing/upgrading i think of you like the truck, which i think this one is with fixing up yo oem plus with a minor lift
So by Colorado logic, instead of the car making slightly more emissions in the few minutes of warm up they would rather see either parts thrown at a very old car which would never replace their carbon cost to make or you simply scrap the car with all the waste that implies. Once a car gets past a certain age or mileage it should only need ot pass a very basic emissions test because most times fixing them makes them financially scrap when they could have years of use left in them. We are talking about an engine based on a design from the 1940's so its not going to be the cleanest thing even if its in perfect condition and there is likely more difference in its emissions due to tracking being out, odd rubber, dragging brakes or any other number of things than the bloomin warm up pump.
Thanks for the breakdown! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
All in fun, but Tommy’s plans sound like everybody’s escalation for their dream car. I vote price out the shortlist and see if buying a different Range Rover and using this as a parts car might not be the wiser choice.
Roman and TFL are incredibly senseless when it comes to car maintenance and repairs. The fact that you continue to talk to Toby about these terrible vehicles shows this. That Bland Rover probably needs a master cylinder line replaced or reflared and properly tightened. Then, just get a hose and gorilla tape it to the other AIR pipe ends. You can get AIR pipes from any number of mid 90s GM cars. If the AIR pump isn't working, pretty much any GM from the era could be used. Just splice the GM connector into the Bland Rover harness. You should be able to pick up a hub stud for under $1 to fix the rear wheel. Will probably take an hour or two to get done. Staple the roof liner up. Turn the stereo off and never speak of it again. Not sure what's wrong with your hvac panel. In short, you have absolutely no idea what you are doing on this front and you should not be doing it -just stick to the journalism that you are passable at. And for the love of science, when you do ANY testing, you should do at least three reps of any test, and five+ would be way better. OTOH if you are looking to get a rise out of all the mechanics that follow along, then definitely continue your Tick-Tock approach to overpaying and failing at car maintenance and repair.
I think you are on the right track. Do the $1500 safety work. See if you can get this to be a running, registered, semi reliable (relatively speaking) 4wd all in for less than six grand. I think that is an experiment we all consider, when we see these formerly expensive cars selling cheap, and wonder if you can turn it into something for less than you would spend for a decent used Corolla. All in at six grand would keep lots of people from driving boring cars!
That SAI pump looks like the same one from a new beetle. Hit up a pick and pull yard and snag one and wire it in. Screw the OEM hose just get some rubber hose and throw in.
Not trying to be mean. But Tommy if you can't handle putting rock sliders on your lr3. This is way above your skill. Roman and you think you need a whole new hub cause the stud broke. Hammer the stud out and put a new one in. Why the heck would you waste a hour doing a press in wheel bearing to change a stud. You guys don't have the drive. This is gonna be like that car. You started doing the rear quarters on, then gave up.
I could not stop laughing ,

Btw, bonnet (hood) needs lifting first before close. Great when struts a bit tired :)
Also, grill plastic was never black from factory.
Hahahahaha! Roman went into this eyes wide open! But now we get to see a rover live up to rover stereotypes on TFL! I don’t know why I find this so funny! Thanks guys!
Ciao!
We all love a good laugh with a Rover, right?
cruise control doesnt work because of the ABS/Brake faults. the radio isnt a Range Rover item, its aftermarket. windows generally you put them down, hold the button for about 3 seconds, then back to the top and again keep the button held for 3 seconds. the secondary air pump pipe thats missing, unless theres a sensor (not familiar with the US spec ones) it could be repaired with a simple chunk of rubber hose, snapped wheel stud can be bashed out with a hammer and punch and a new stud wound in using the wheel nuts. dont know what US prices are like, but im guessing the faults ive mentioned, if the brake master cylinder is $250, id guess the entire thing could be fixed for $400 of parts, unless the secondary air pump itself has also failed.
What a poor, little, neglected truck! I'm all in for the "fix up the junk" madness.
It would be awesome to see a series on this thing getting fixed up, if it were economical. The Toby video alone would be hilarious.
Bill Burr on his podcast just talked about how the guys on Top Gear used to piss on american cars when this is what the Brits are making. Bill used the Jaquar as an example.
Europeans just don’t appreciate unbolstered bench seats and column shifters like we do
Well Jeremy Clarkson did say that reliability was overrated.
@@sbGOM if you have Jeremy’s income, and fleet of cars, that might be a valid point.
New series watching tommy fix the range rover himself! I love your enthusiasm on your, wise investment! 😁
I have an lr3 v8 SE and it's da bomb..looove it
7:52 its kinda hard for an aluminium body to rust there homeboy. all land rovers are aluminium!
Land rovers up to 2004 were aluminum. L322 and newer are steel body panels in places, along with lr3,4 and d5
You need to replace the bulb in the AC display.
what an awesome car, looking forward to the coming updates.
Like the camera glasses Roman. You gave us a POV of the POS, HAHA!
It's actually really good, really solid, just neglected and lots of small things to sort. Nice colour too. Future classic.
One of the great things of living in an emissions testing free state. We can register anything and everything.
You can register but can’t drive it very far.
Just have to put the money into savings instead of fixing the emissions so you can pay for your lung transfer later on
New storyline for RR: part it out and see how much money you can make selling it piece by piece.
Source your parts from "Atlantic British." You will save a ton. You got this Tommy. Do not buy parts from dealer.
Go to a local junk yard and pull the parts, they are all priced the same no matter the vehicle. It will also teach you how to remove the brake master.
it never occurred to me to publish my bad car buying decisions to youtube for money. i think its far too late now, and honestly, having had a p38, i dont think i could do worse than that, again, anyway. I don't hate range rovers, actually i love them; what I hate is how unreliable they are. I once drove one out of a snowdrift that completely covered it simply by putting it in drive. Also, love how when it says 'POV cam' its actually the guy in the back seat. I blame the range rover.
The POV Cam was on the other side. Unless we were getting the POV of Roman wearing the POV glasses cam. 😀
The POV Cam made me nauseous.
Ya know....for 4600 kinda woulda been better to get that one. I personally would still enjoy that series of videos! I always wanted but never owned a P38 and would enjoy seeing a functioning one make it to Moab and do CO trails.
This will get far more views and thus easily earn more than the $3k difference, assuming they can keep the repairs really cheap.
Amazing, you bought a $1500 car and there are things wrong with it. I'm shocked. I have a broken leaf spring on my 2008 Ranger and am also devastated.
Thanks guys
You could always try the temporary, heat gun fix on the plastic. The gray will eventually come back, but it should look better for a while.
The golden God would not appreciate the slander for this beautiful finisher car🦅🦅
Ive always liked the way those look!
I want to watch the video where Tommy is working on it and snaps yelling, “Why won’t you work!”
FYI, the CIVILIZED portions of CO( outside the Dnver/Boulder metroplex toilet) don't require emissions testing...... ;)
Tommy referencing the trunk… I think it’s the boot if you’re calling the British mobiles hood a bonnet.
overall P38 is a good truck.
Toby will say, "What have you done?" Good luck guys, you will need it.
try some avalon king on the black plastic bits and i suggest you find a junk yard for parts on the RR
Since it's a buick engine you might be able to source engine parts from GM/GM parts at the parts store.
I mean, here in Nebraska where we don’t have emissions testing that would be a fun buy for sure
If you guys own property in Moab, just register it in Utah. No safety or emissions in Grand County.
You don't need an oem hose for the SAP. Any hose with a few clamps will do.
There’s definitely no doubt they’re father and son. 😂😂
Every time they’re on camera together they’re always bickering about something. lol
Maybe Dave could use this as a farm truck😂
Yes
That air pump was also used on many BMWs and I think Mercedes too. Should be easy to find a good used one.
Forget Summit County! buy like 3 acres in Huerfano county for $3k, no emissions here!
You can fix all of these minor issues with used parts very easily. Half the “issues” are just lack of knowledge on this model.
That SAI pump looks like the same one from a new beetle. Hit up a pick and pull yard and snag one and wire it in. Screw the OEM hose just get some rubber hose and throw in.
Wow thats crazy! My car is 23 years old 240 000miles and in wayyyyy better shape! In Canada too!
You could drill and (left-hand thread) tap that broken wheel bolt, screw a bolt into your bolt, then unbolt the bolt.
