Jar... I respect you... But you stole my female villains video idea. I made this video topic two months before you, and I'm gonna make a 26 minute video of me eating ramen while shaking my fist at your video thumbnail. SHAKE HARDER BOI!
16:21 Another thing, the protagonist can 100% still be the bad guy. Just because we're watching from the viewpoint of the protagonist 90% of the time, that doesn't mean they aren't the villain of the story.
I’m an amateur writer and I’m already making a story where the god damn main villain of my previous one is the protagonist. He doesn’t become less evil, he just shifts it to do something else. If I can understand it then this “gentleman” should too
dfvoshfviewbgvire We are following the view of the protagonist 100% of the time because that's what a protagonist is - the person that you follow. Could be the hero or the villain. Joker movie as an example - he's a villain and the protagonist. They are not mutually exclusive.
I love how he says "how can you complain that some female villains get redeemed way too quickly and get hit with a slap on the wrist as punishment." While also showing Emerald. The definition of a female villain getting redeemed way too quickly, receiving a slap on the wrist, and being able to join the main team.
Nico Robin started out as a person that sucked up to the World Government, and she did all of their deeds before joining the Strawhat Pirates, and she wasn't immediately redeemed, but she had to earn her redemption from Enies Lobby to the current Egghead Island Arc, so that's the proper way of writing a female villain's redemption story@@Dragonage2ftw.
This reminds me of the time I was called a "misogynist" for saying a villain (a female villain) was toxic and manipulative. Which is a big part of her character 💀
I like how this guy is a self-proclaimed "good writer" yet he doesn't know the difference between "villain" and "antagonist", seeing through his incapacity to tell Maleficent IS a villain, yet a protagonist, because both those things ARE separate terms. Its basic writer knowledge btw lol.
it is actually a really good plot point if the 'villain' and protagonist are the same, since most media does not focus on the villain, it makes a quite unique experience
No,, a villain can't be a protagonist because a villain is BY DEFINITION an antagonistic force,, since it opposes to the morals presented to you by the story (morals that are in fact followed by the protagonist,, always,, bc it's THEIR morals) THE WORD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR (And the one people who ACTUALLY write and create AND DO SOMETHING WITH THE MEDIA THEY CONSUME,, that you like to say you care about,, but I guess not enough to actually analyze it and see with a critical eye) is ANTI-HERO. A protagonist that does not follow the conventionally accepted "hero traits" either by what is presented to us in a story or what is known as heroic in the real world by already told stories. The reason you don't know this is because although you "care" a whole bunch about how much the media you consume entertains you,, you fail to engage with it's artistically driven capacities and traits. TL;DR: Please stop living in a bubble,, actually engage with what you consume,, LEARN THE PROPER TERMINOLOGY FOR THINGS BEFORE SAYING SOMETHING DUMB and if you actually cared about all of this you would be creating the art you wanna see in the world (as you do not need to be an artist to do so,, and you will start learning how to create better art than you could even begin to imagine as long as you keep writing/composing/painting/designing)
@@LooniiGruni Jesus dude, you think you are so correct yet you fumbled so terribly bad at every point... An "antagonist" is not by default a "villain", neither is a "protagonist" by default a "hero". Why? Simple, the definition of a "protagonist" according to literally ANY official definition is the character that the story focuses around, whether they are a hero or not, point is that they ARE the CENTER of a story. An "antagonist",. however, is THE OPPOSITE FORCE for the PROTAGONIST. Nowhere does it state the "antagonist" is a villain by default, you are delusional lol. For example, imagine they made a series focusing on the story of "Bowser" from the Super Mario series... By YOUR logic, that would make Bowser a "hero" and Mario the "villain"? No? Well now you sound stupid. Also, I legit cannot even believe you tried to be a smartass and go "UUUUUHHH AKSHUALLY ITS ANTI-HERO"... ... No? An "anti-hero" by definition (literally just open google dude it takes like 5 seconds) is, and I quote "a central character in a story, movie, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes". This means they are a character who leans towards heroism, but often have morals and ideals that do not fit the average "hero" ideollogy. Where the fuck did you even get the idea that this was the "correct" definition? lmao.
Uh. Did diregentleman seriously cite Meruem as redeemed? Because he wanted to protect ONE person. When he still wanted to kill everyone else. That's his definition of redeemed?
The only way he was "redeemed" was surrendering and dying. Nobody forgave him, he just had a nice, heart touching moment with Komugi as they were dying.
Nonono don’t misunderstand it. He’s not a bad person! But yet all the other things that he called him. That would mean that everything he called him wouldn’t equal a bad person.
@@thedarkmasterthedarkmaster yeah but you have to admit commentators insult each other all the time. That's what's fun about it, at least personally speaking
@@senaardlu5633 Um, yeah, personally speaking indeed... there's insulting drama-bait and then there's good faith arguments. You can't pretend you're giving one while dishing out the other. And also, JAR was called more than "lazy".
Not to mention he used the character Anton Ego throughout that entire segment, just to hammer in that he’s being pretentious but “oh so misunderstood” bullcrap! Word of advice; if you’re gonna talk about critics or how you are an edgy critic yourself, don’t use clips of flipping Anton Ego. It’s like using SpongeBob when talking about shows for kids!
I love the rare times that Azula decides to be even a bit nice, but literally has no idea how. The Beach aside, I think part of her genuinely wanted to help get Zuko and Mai together when they were kids, by...well, nothing nice. So many layers for such a simple character. Heck, Toph had more dimensions to her than most female characters, and her arc was like an episode long.
he's not the only person to think like this so many people in the anime community have the small brain idea of "light is so cool he's the protagonist and the antagonist" despite that not being how that works and needing to educate them.
@@chronic-joker I don't think most actually believe light is the hero I've rarely heard people saying light was a hero, only those that have only recently got into death note or don't pay attention have those opinions which don't last anyway. Also saying light is cool doesn't mean they're saying he's the hero.
His points are just great. "You haven't talked about this", "You can't complain about this, because you haven't watched that", "Your points are not valid, because you have watched a small amount of movies"
As someone who'd watched Dire's video without watching yours and I have to apologize that I let him mislead me into thinking you had no legitimate arguments.
Diregentleman's point on Darth Vader isn't even accurate, cause another factor for him falling to the dark side is the hypocrisy of the Jedi order, felt like he was being held back by them, all the while not being trusted by a majority of them. Hence *why* he's complaining. He basically traded masters, which let him be the perfect target for the big bad to mold him to do that stuff.
I don’t think I need to mention all the bad stuff that he went through the clone wars tv show both of them hell one episode he nearly destroyed a planet with his rage alone
Yeah... The jedi order was full of crap. In the extended material, wich sadly I don't think it's canon anymore, their history is explained. They even exterminated conflicting views on the force, not siths, other light force orders and users... They were self reicheous hypocrites, too high up their own asses to see the threats in front of them, wich is why they died.
Did he really simplify Meruem entire character as a redeemed villain? The Chimera Ants arc is all about how conflict is NOT simple and how the labels "villain" and "hero" depend entirely on who's side is telling the story How did he manage to miss the point so fucking bad?
The Chimera ant arc is also about how our humanity can keep us from becoming monsters in some situations, and also make us monsters in others. Gon's humanity and care for Kite drives him to become an unstoppable beast by the end of the ark, but it's also humanity that makes many of the Chimera ants allies and saves a lot of lives too. Humanity also leads Netero to sacrifice himself to save the world.
@@Dragonage2ftw he is legitimately evil even till the end, his priorities just shifted due to him realizing he has few hours at best to live , he never reedemed himself.
“They’re either not evil enough or when they are, they’re given a slap on the wrist.” Yes, that’s exactly the main issues with a lot of modern female villains. As for Emerald from RWBY, her sins are entirely ERASED to make her less evil so she can join the main gang. I have to say they’re erased, because in Volume 7-8, nothing about what Emerald did is ever mentioned, like her directly assisting in making Pyrrha killing Penny and burning Beacon to the ground
That's what I like about Hela from Thor Ragnarok. Generically evil, yes, but entertainingly evil too. But most importantly is flat out destroyed as a consequence of her evil! And some may say "isn't that sexist?" No, because we have an awesome female hero in the same exact movie that goes through actual growth to balance it out.
"I don't like Vi, because she's a Mary Sue for taking on a big and strong man! Eugh!" Maybe because Vi learned how to fight as a child and any form of boxing is her signature move apart from the HexTech gauntlets? I dunno, something tells me DireGentleman is a big Rey fan. I just can't put my fingers on it 🤔
@@Dragonage2ftw That's rich coming from someone who used the term "SJW" as a descriptor. Don't you think it ironic to argue that "Mary Sue" means nothing anymore and is thus invalid when the term "SJW" was butchered most likely even harder? Perhaps you should revisit your priorities.
Damn he really tried so hard to paint JAR as a sexist misogynist, probably why he doesn't complain about SpyV because if he tried that same narrative he'd be laughed at for essentially saying that a woman is a misogynist. He calls himself a gentleman to seem like a man of chivalry and a ladies man that will protect women from the *villainess misogynists* like JAR. He has the mindset of a discord mod that believes usernames like *gentleman* makes them more desirable to women.
@@HexManiacQuinn I haven't seen it that as much and most of the time it's because a woman is backing them or they treat the woman as an ignorant child that needs *"saving",* it honestly never ends well with them going that route of you have self hate misogyny because the *"message"* is lost once he's going after a woman. The same goes when they try that same shit with race, the guy would've been the next laughing stock from his video if he gone with the same narrative with SpyV but either way he made a fool out of himself.
The thing about Vi being able to knockout Silco’s burly henchmen makes some sense when you look at one thing, she hits him in the chin/lower jaw. The chin is a very vulnerable spot if hit with enough force it can cause a concussion. A trained boxer like Vi would know this. You don’t need to be that strong to do this either. He clearly doesn’t know what he talking about and other commentators pointed this out.
From personal experience yeah getting your chin punched I wouldn’t want to feel that again it fine happened when I was a kid did get to enjoy smoothies for a while though strawberry banana I would recommend
@@crimsonbladewielder1975 Fret not, there's no negative mention of our lord and savior Dumsy Drip by any party involved. I simply saw footage of Dire saying "JAR meme editing not funny didn't laugh" and me mind went full monke Dumbs protecc.
A lot of the male villains he named which were "redeemed" either weren't actually villains to begin with like Spiderman 2 Doc Ock who was mind controlled or Snape who while a jerk was on the heroes side, or were villains that weren't really forgiven like Vader, who was maybe forgiven by one whole person and only because he turned on the bigger villain last second at the expense of himself. Their examples are pretty bad and show little understanding of the characters.
I'd argue that Snape was, and always will be, a villain, because the shit he pulled when he wasn't working as a double agent is just unforgivable (and even then, it's debatable whether Snape redeemed himself by doing double agent stuff in the first place). Plus, it isn't just his actions against Harry that make Snape a villain, but other students as well. Hell, the fact one of his students biggest fears is Snape himself is a reason to chuck him into a jail or at least fire him (in a sane world, at least).
@@Xeno_Solarus neither do Snape's fans. His entire character can be summarised with Stannis Baratheon's words: a good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Yes, Snape risked his life to be a double-agent for Voldemort, but the initial reasons for him to do so was totally selfish, and he still was an asshole to everyone around him. He hated Harry for being James's son, he hated Nevill for the fact that Voldermort came after Potters instead of Longbottoms, and he hated every student in Hogwarts that was not on Slytherin because projecting your grudges on kids is very fun and mature, aparenlty. Him being on the good guys side doesn't make him any less of a douche, and yet Snape fans always ignore that, and make him look like a martyr.
@@OverLorD768 I especially agree with Snape’s treatment of Harry. Yes, James was a dick to Snape, stole the girl he loved, yadda yadda, that doesn’t excuse him being a dick to his son, a kid who wasn’t at fault for any of that.
"Professional Writer" implies that Diregentleman does writing/editing as a job/career. Doesn't mean he's necessarily good at writing-- or videos for that matter. Dude really can't punch higher than Lily Orchard...
Self-plagarist Makes as much sense as saying you lost virginity because you beat your meat or flicked your bean. Like... No. The point of both those things are when person A does something to Person B. It is not a Reflexive property, or a Transitive property. :D
Yet, it's still true. Because you are TECHNICALLY quoting another source, even if you wrote it, failing to properly cite it counts as plagiarism. So yes, while it does exist, it is the single dumbest thing in writing. I have had this exact thing screw me over, as I got flagged for reusing some lines from a high school paper in a recent college paper. My teacher pointed it out to me and thankfully didn't bust my ass over it, but I was (and still am) rather annoyed
Vi did not overpower the goon. Getting struck in the jaw can rattle a person's brain and break their balance, especially if the person is it with the right amount of force. It can even knock someone out. Vi more than likely got into numerous brawls while in prison. We even see her training in her cell when we are reintroduced to her.
@@wardenunknown Yeah, there is also the fact that Vi was easily able to wield cast iron gauntlets. I'm not sure how much they weighed, but the fact that could handle that weight once again shows the shallowness of the argument. Vi won those fights because she had the ability to do so, not because the narrative needed her too.
Not only that but if you actually pay attention to the fights with vi you can see how she uses the environment and opponents weaknesses to her advantage. Like in the first fight with Sevika when she introduced the chemtech arm. Till Sevika figures she cant beat Vi and instead goes for the kill only for cait to stop her
Damn, he really just took a bunch of clips from your video out of context, deliberately cut them short to make them sound shitty, and then called it a day. Dude literally made up arguments that you didn't say, just so he could get mad at them. Wild.
Wait, did he honestly believe a voice actress is a good argument about a good female villain? Does he not realize that the VC means nothing when it comes to good female villain writing?! The VC is just adding a voice to the character. Azula is an excellent female villain for her complex upbringing and lack of empathy for those whom she hurts. She doesn't care if people are killed as long as she gets what she wants. Even in the comics, the after story of the Avatar series, she was still manipulative and crazed, willing to hurt anyone to get what she wants. So instead of making a valid argument, he attacks your editors? Wait...isn't the Arcane argument the exact opposite to what he tried to argue about your own video? Why do I sense heavy hypocrisy?
So after scrolling through the comment section of Dire Gentleman’s original “response”, it’s pretty obvious that no one there even watched JAR’s original video, and just took DG at his word. It’s pretty disturbing how much they blindly hate JAR
(Completely unrelated to the video but I wanted to mention this) I realized whenever people try to criticize JAR for his DaftPina videos, they always do it in the laziest way possible, by only showing his description of his second video where JAR admits he got some (very *VERY* minor) things wrong……..and that’s it. But hey, it doesn’t take long to realize why these people do this!
A sock to the jaw RATTLES YOUR BRAIN, **LITERALLY** you cannot stay standing if someone socks you hard enough, an example being that scene in Arcane, she had METAL gauntlets, metal vs flesh does not end well for flesh. The way your brain gets rattled causes the brain to go into overdrive, causing it to basically shut down.
This is a nitpick but I hate how diregentleman and people like him just compliment themselves, it comes off as narcissistic. If you need to call yourself a gentleman then you are definitely not a gentleman. It's small but really annoying.
Another difference between the male and female characters referenced in The Mechanichist Test section is that most of the male villains weren't villains by choice or weren't the villain at all. Doc Oc? Being controlled by his suit. T800? It's a different terminator in each movie and they're programmed to be on the good team when they're the hero. Snape? He's an a-hole, but he's never been the villain; he just looks like it a lot. Vader? He wasn't forgiven by anyone other than his children (and it's arguable that Leia forgave him) and he was saved from further evil by his son, then died.
Roy Batty, too, wasn't a villain by choice. He was a sentient being given the intelligence of a man but only about a twentieth of his lifespan, and he was going around trying desperately to extend his final days. In fact, everyone he unalived viewed him as a disposable commodity, so their disposals are actually somewhat ironic. In the end, Roy wins the fight but saves Deckard, proving his humanity. He delivers the breathtaking Tears in Rain monologue and dies, still viewed by the world as a soulless automaton. So, pardon my french, but this creep can go focque himself for even suggesting it's comparable to Jolee's Maleficent.
@@Dragonage2ftw Is that a question directed at me or your own comment, since the relevance of my comment is clear if you'd watched about 20 minutes of the video rather than troll the comments for reactions every few hours.
What's really funny is that the whole "endgame accidental genocide" argument was disproven. Years ago. The people who worked on the movie explicitly said that hulk had made it so everyone came back *safely*, meaning everyone on a plane is still inside that plane no matter where it was, people who would be in walls would just be in the house itself or just outside, etc. And I wouldn't be surprised if that had been revealed by the time diregentleman made his star vs ending video.
Im sorry but did he say Ishtar I'd an example of a female villain? As in, the Goddess of Love and Fertility Ishtar? Maiden of War Ishtar? The goddess that walked right into the underworld to save her love Ishtar? THAT ishtar?
@@foisopracurtir6389No, the only man to refuse her (Gilgamesh)had a bull God sent to kill him but he and his friend killed it,but his friend got killed by the gods later, and if you did become her lover you were turned into an animal later and would die soon after.(very oversimplified version of the epic of Gilgamesh)
His arcane criticsms bother me so much, because one thing the arcane design team and story writers really pay attention to is subtle story telling. Vi normally gets her ass beat pretty easily, especially in the scene when she knocked out the henchman in one punch. In fact, the only reason she could do that is because she had the gauntlets on, on top of her previously shown strength.
Vi's build combined with the way she threw those punches means that the hit landing is a showcase of sloppiness on the end of the goon. Vi can barely wield the things. She gets thrown about by them. Any half-decent pugilist would have her pinned in short order, especially helping since the things on her extremities visibly impact her mobility. That means once she's on the ground, they make it significantly easier to hold her there. All this is to say, please don't bother tryina reason bits of Arcane that need no reasoning. The fight scenes are a vehicle for entertainment and character building, not realistic choreography.
@@Scruffy-qi3ik uppercutting with those gauntlets is a hindrance for someone with vi's strength at the time. Crosses are functional cuz you get heft, but uppercuts are undercut by the weight of the thing going directly against your direction of strike.
@@chukyuniqul is your argument that I'm wrong for using what the show displayed to be true of the character, because realistically (despite the fact that this isn't a real world by any measures) the thing amplifying vi's punches should hinder her. But you worded it in the most condescending way out there, and your point is kind of stupid because this is a fantasy world and my point relied on subtle storytelling within the detail.
@@whatteamwildcats4033 my point is that the simple answer to the "vi overpowers that goon" is "she still loses and it's not unbelievable but it's also hype and helps build her character as someone with a lotta grit and a willingness to fight bigger enemies so that break in reality really doesn't matter as much", and that trying to justify it with real world mechanics applied arbitrarily is counterproductive. By real life metrics vi would have gotten beat. But the way the story is set up makes her winning the far better narrative and entertainment outcome so it doesn't matter.

I think he completely missed the reason Anakin went bad. Anakin's character arc is the same as Mulan in the live action remake if her character arc made any sense.
It hurts my head to think about the fact that in this day and age, its rare to see content creators critique one another in constructive ways instead of such condescending ways like in diregentleman's video. Don't get me wrong, these videos of his could be outliers for all I know since I've only ever seen his Lily Pete's video aside from the ones here, but it would've been cooler for him to still attempt being funny, while also adding on to the points JAR made on the topic instead of going "Watch more movies dumb dumb, not ALL female villains are bad" when JAR never said they were all bad.
@@Dragonage2ftw That.....doesn't make sense and doesn't really have much to do with the video itself. 31:38 Monika isn't a villain DireGentleman, she is a victim. She's an AI being tortured by limited programming of a visual novel and it has corrupted her outer processes. The entire point is that she is still using the Internal pieces of the game and how it interacts with the computer to cry for help because she and the AIs that the other girls are based on are in trouble (mind you the other AIs aren't even there so you can't even claim she victimized them, the worse thing she can be accused of is scaring the player.) Between this and Medusa why does DireGentleman seem to think that women are villains if they a victimized?
For Vi, you can also see that she was the strongest in the group, she had highest score on machine and was still the highest even when jinx tried to beat it later on. She had experience from the start, so plus the metal guntlet, i'm pretty sure she would do damage to most of them.
She's also very complex and not just GIVEN power or "ThE BeSTEst EvAr!!" and makes HUGE mistakes... like smacking Powder across the face... after.. you know...
I wouldn't say she is the strongest of the group, but more so that she is better with hand-to-hand combat, Clogger is most likely the physically strongest one of the group.
Also, he might be… “joking”, but did Diregentlemen really call the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy the “worst movies of all time”? Cause that is not only a big stretch to call only them the worst movies ever, even if we are taking biased out of the equation, but he’s implying that movies like Garbage Pail Kids, Freddy Got Fingered, Movie 43 and Shamalan’s The Last Airbender are mediocre or good. I’m dead serious!
I think what Dire Gentleman forgot something important about the fight with Vi and henchman, she was wearing a literal power jewel that known to just blow up in magic from dropping it glove. It would make sense why she's able to just suddenly one punch a guy out. As where she didn't have a powerful glove it would make sense why it was more like he wanted.
And outside of that context, as other pointed out.... a punch to the jaw rattles your brain. So with that ALONE, her taking out a guy bigger than her makes sense.
I don't think Dire's use of the T-800 as an example works too well, mostly on the grounds that I'm pretty sure that the T-800 from the first Terminator isn't the same one as the T-800 from the sequel.
On another note, His complaints about Vi knocking people out in one hit are a bit dishonest. It's a lot easier to knock people out in one hit when you've basically got sledgehammer heads for fists. Although, considering how strong she'd need to be to even throw punches with those gauntlets attached, she can probably hit hard enough to one shot a person without them too.
Yeah, the T-800 from the first movie was crushed at the end, and all that's left is a broken chip and it's broken arm which shows up in T2. The T-800 in T2 was a completely different robot that was reprogramed to protect John instead of kill him and sent to protect him from the T-1000 goop guy. They aren't the same character. Heck, depending on how you think of Terminators time travel they might not even be from the same future timeline.
@@ericchung3177i mean considering how the time travel works yeah I’d think that t-800 was from a better future but not by much like they have a better chance but not 100% chance of winning
The don’t like it don’t watch it argument, as Robot said, is just a way to tell you to shut up. They don’t want things they don’t like to exist, and they treat people not liking something (even if they don’t watch it or attack it) as an attack on their thing, and there for, an attack on them. These people treat anyone not in their camp as actively attacking it and everyone it for existing.
To be fair, I mostly knew that argument as "Don't Like, Don't Read" in fan fiction circles, but there at least fan fictions have tags so like, if you don't want to see Light and L from Death Note having gay sex or something, BOOM there's a tag for that and you can avoid it instead of reading it. So there, the argument makes sense. For just diving blind into a TV series, not so much.
Exactly 💯 Some people hate criticism because it hurts their precious little darling feelings. The fact that he made a video on JAR shows how sensitive he really is.
That whole “they see female characters as pawns in the culture war” part: if he has ever talked about representation then that is blatant hypocrisy, since the entire point of that argument is that characters with certain identities are supposed to be representative of everyone in that demographic, and usually also assume it’s a zero-sum war for dominance or some sort of balancing the cosmic scales for things done since the dawn of time (according to them).
Ignoring every decade (at lease when we had it) some sort of great women on TV. They're acting like Lucille Ball didn't exist and paved the way for Modern SciFi and the Sitcoms

Disgruntled Gentleman just seems so pathetic to me. The guy acts incredibly entitled and happily throws anyone under the bus to make a point that makes him seem better. After watching several of his videos, he's trying to do the same thing that the majority of most SJW's do. Attacking anyone or anything that goes against 'THE MESSAGE' and he believes that women will find him irresistibly attractive and everyone will hold him up as some kind of champion of social justice. He calls himself the 'Disgruntled Gentleman' for gods sakes... What woman can resist a guy like that? The two main things that really annoy me about the guy, is that first he is willing to get as personal and nasty as possible. I watched the short video of calling JAR a child molester months ago, and it was just so slimy. Stuff like that goes beyond criticism and is just spiteful for the sake of spite. The second thing that annoys me is his claim of him and his buddy being 'Professional Writers'. I myself want to be a writer, but I in no way consider myself to be professional at it. I consider people like Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Philip Roth, and many other like-minded people who have actually had their work remembered and PUBLISHED to be professional writers. I looked it up, these guys wrote nothing, never had anything published, nothing. It's possible I did miss SOMETHING, but at most it would've just been some crappy fanfiction. And yet they prance around and act like they're these professional writers who know better then anyone else. To put it in perspective, it's like some guy who makes a bowl of cereal, and yet he claims to be a Master Chef. "Well, in the rain and snow you can't be homeless, The one who asked for the night himself will better understand the other" - Children's poem "Cat's House", as an example of the Hulk woman.
The rules of modern writing: 1) a woman cannot lose a fight to a man 2) a woman cannot be evil for its own sake. She must be sympathetic and, for best results, turn good because female protagonist exists 3) True power does not come from training or skill. True power comes from ignoring everyone else and focusing on your own wants and desires. As Voldemort said, "There is only power and those too weak to seek it."
You know, I happen to come across Dire's video regarding Lily Orchard's dreadful writing tips, as well as his video about actual writing tips. Those were the only two videos I frequently watch because I genuinely found his tips helpful and I started admiring him and I saw him as inspiration for me to continue my dreams of becoming a writer. But after seeing this video and seeing how problematic he really was, throughout his video he twisted what you say, making up stuff, and cut out context, really hurt. Still, I have other role models that inspire me to write. I wish you well and hope you keep being awesome!
In those cases, you have to wonder if he's just regurgitating what he read from some actual author. Or maybe not; maybe he can write well, but he's too ideologically blind to argue honestly, or just a dick. Like you said, plenty of other people to learn from without those flaws.
Tbf, with Maleficent, she wasn't evil just to be evil. She was evil because her wings were stolen from her. (Apparently it symbolizes R***) The king did that to her. As revenge, she decided to take away something he loved.
The prequels inclusion is so weird because for someone who hates how the prequels treated the turn to the Dark Side by Anakin, he doesn't seem to remember those movies all that well. Anakin Skywalker constantly disobeyed Qui Gon in Episode 1 (something that he would get more whiny and extreme with in Episode 2), and in Episode 2 he not only advocates literal Fascism to Padme on that one Naboo scene that became a meme a while back - but he then goes on to murder a bunch of kids like 10 minutes later in the movie, and then yells at Padme about him committing "mass-unaliving" on that village and how he sees them as both beneath them and nothing but mindless, evil animals. Not to mention the whole "dying in childbirth" thing in Episode 3 was *heavily* implied to be Palpatine fucking with him to get him to do something stupid that'll ex-communicate him from the Order, thereby making his grooming of Anakin much easier. Which did happen, because Mace Windu was executing his friend in cold blood and therefore acting like a massive hypocrite & soon-to-be murderer (in Anakin's eyes). Like, yeah, Episodes 1 & 2 aren't particularly great films, but the actual plot itself (ignoring clunky dialogue, over-reliance on CGI, and pacing issues) is one of the best villain origin stories in film history - and both informs and expands on the character of Darth Vader flawlessly.
Well, the Clone Wars handled Anakin much, MUCH better, giving him stronger motivations to turn against the Jedi and possibly even to the Dark Side. Such as Ahsoka being accused of something that would get her a death sentence, only for the Jedi Council to basically downplay the whole experience once she is proven innocent. Or, to a lesser extent, the Jedi Council not telling Anakin that actually, his master is actually alive and is now disguised as the bounty hunter that supposedly killed him. That kind of crap would CERTAINLY at least DAMAGE ones' trust in an organisation like that.
Also in Arcane when they pull off super human feats it is because they have literal magical gear or are enhanced with (maybe magical?) drugs. Punching the goon and knocking him out wasn't super human, she had metal (bracers?) and people have been knocked out with much softer boxing gloves

The whole "WOman beating up a man is a Mary Sue" connection he tries to make is a good example of reverseing cause and effect. See a Mary Sue will often beat up supossedly powerful men. Not because beating up a man makes you a Mary Sue. But because in these cases the man was put there to get beaten up to proove the girl's superiority. It's generally a guy used as a punching bag as it's a common theme that mary Sues msut "Fight against the Patriarchy" and so oviously to prove she's the best she has to beat up the ones above her AKA men. But again it's not beating up the men that makes her a Mary Sue. To break it down to it's more basic elements what's happening is she's beating up someone established as more powerful than everyone else. Thus by defeating said person the Mary Sue prooves in a single moment she's even more better than everyone else. This applies regardless of the gender of the other party. But of course just beating up someone strong doens't instantly make them a Mary Sue either so even if you ingnored that point the act alone doesn't define a Mary Sue. If I had to summarize a Mary sue in my own words it would be "A female character that is the best at everything with minimal to no training, suffers little to no consequences or obstacles, and is just generally awesome simply because the story declares them as such".
A lot of words, but they all seem necessary. I'd summarize thus: if a character is portrayed as better than they have any reason to be, they approach the Mary Sue/Gary Stu state. Even if you state a "reason", if it strikes the viewer as insufficient it approaches that state. Examples: Wesley Crusher gets praised as smart and clever despite doing nothing of the kind. Everything he does works out, even if the writers aren't sure how to make it do so. Rey has more Force juju than Luke Skywalker and Vader combined despite zero training. People like her despite her doing nothing particularly charismatic or charming. Everyone wants Korra, despite her extremely abrasive personality. She can bend 3 elements as a toddler with no training, despite Aang's prodigious skill still needing training just to start bending.
@@robertbeisert3315 The most fundamental trait of a Sue I can think of is this: the plot, world, and universe revolve around them. That is, the Sue is the most important being in the setting to the point that reality warps around them to accommodate them. For instance, the Sue can never be wrong. When they're the hotshot maverick, their reckless actions never fail. No matter how bad the odds, they always succeed and prove everybody who doubted them to be foolish. No one is allowed to dislike the Sue. Everyone falls in love with the Sue given enough exposure, and any who dare to hate the Sue suffer horrifying fates, as if the universe itself is consipring to destroy them for the crime of not liking the Sue. The Sue can never fail. Whatever flaws they have, whatever mistakes they make, it always works out. They are never allowed to fuck up with tangible consequences that aren't either tiny and meaningless, or immediately fixed. Sues also typically have "flaws" that aren't real flaws, like "He/She's clumsy, but in a cute way, lol", or "He's too nice, UwU". The Sue also typically has a really weird morality where "good" and "evil" are irrelevant. All things are good when done by the Sue. Protagonist-centered morality is one thing, but it's generally done when the narrative takes an objective stance on what happened and lets you make your own judgement. A Sue story is assured to tell you that what happened was objectively morally good, because the Sue said so.

What exactly has Diregentleman even worked on to where he can call himself a "professional writer?" Has he ever written any books that got published or screenplays that were made into anything?
He's one of the writers of a podcast "Less is Morgue", it's a horror comedy about a ghost & a ghoul who begin a podcast together after the ghost starts haunting the ghoul & they become best friends. I ended up as a fan of the podcast, though that & his channel is all I'm aware of so far, and while I enjoy the podcast (which was discontinued while s2 was releasing because the group behind it disbanded) it still has it's flaws.

The creator of the work is the ultimate decider on whether it's their magnum opus or not, not the creator's subpar critics. This isn't very important to bring focus to, but it bugged me the most about Diregentleman's opening.
His video was so childish and unprofessional at so many points, it was embarrassing. I think the thing that immediately made me realise why he made his video was the ending. The way he so mockingly disrespects JAR at the very end just told me he only did the video because he didn’t like you. And his video was pretty lazy in all honesty, some of the villains he brought up I don’t even think were that good. Not to mention majority of his arguments and comparisons were complete booty fudge.
Jeez. I felt a bit of relief when you said that you watched this guy, too and felt "Wow. Clearly, I watched only his good videos." I mainly watched the Troper Tales and Monster Girl Safari series' along with a couple other things, which I thought were all funny. Still, I thought a channel where writers talked about writing and gave advice on writing was valuable to me. But now I'm really questioning if this is the guy I should be listening to (especially due to what I am reading from this video's comment section). I watched both your video and DG's video on female villain's 10 months ago when DG's came out. I found things to agree with on both sides and the main thing that stuck with me on DG's video was to expand your horizons on media, which I personally felt I was lacking. But, man he dug into you so much in that video and those digs barely have any stance. Those digs were dug with a plastic spoon he himself painted with silver paint, even though there's a perfectly fine silver spoon next to him. Honestly, I started to waver on my stance on DG when he made his "Helluva Boss is actually bad?" video after his "Helluva Boss is actually good?" video. Of course, that's more do to with how I just don't like the show that much. This video definitely gives me a more concrete stance on this guy. How did I not realize how condescending he was? A hard thing for me to recognize, I guess. Lesson learned: don't think people have a small pool of media to take from just because they didn't talk about every fucking thing they've all their life. Of course, I always knew that.
Wow JAR, I actually had a similar experience of Diregentlemen too. I found their early Helluva Boss videos and really enjoyed them, and I saw their Lily Peet "rules of Writing" or whatever video and got a good laugh too. Overall was left with a very good impression of them. Then I saw some other odd video or another and changed my mind. This just put them on my shit list, though.
Another point to bring up about the "don't Like, Don't Watch" argument is that I knew it as "Don't Like, Don't Read" in fan fiction circles, but there at least fan fictions have tags so like, if you don't want to see Light and L from Death Note having gay sex or something, BOOM there's a tag for that and you can avoid it instead of reading it. So there, the argument makes sense. For just diving blind into a TV series, not so much.

it is actually a really good plot point if the 'villain' and protagonist are the same, since most media does not focus on the villain, it makes a quite unique experience

Yeah... I am not sure one can "forgive" a brain-washed individual. Not because they are unforgivable, but because there's nothing to forgive.
@@Darkgun231 You clearly don't have a good understanding of Snape.

Like...

Plus you know, she did the equivalent of hitting someone with a pipe with the force of a punch

The saddest part of this all is that looking through the comments, everybody is too lazy to look at the video he’s chopping up to make you look worse.

Also busting someone’s chin will allways knock them out if not daze the hell out of them with a concussion

*Names his channel Diregentlemen.

How ironic - Emperor Palpatine
It's very fitting that he plays Clown Man's theme through most of his video.
Also in Arcane when they pull off super human feats it is because they have literal magical gear or are enhanced with (maybe magical?) drugs.
Punching the goon and knocking him out wasn't super human, she had metal (bracers?) and people have been knocked out with much softer boxing gloves
Ok JAR got around to most of that point like......a minute after I posted it, guess this comment is for the algorithm
And?

Unfortunate
glad to see Dire finally getting called out. I watched it forever ago and it was annoying the hell out of me. Almost made a critique of my own even though I barely have a channel
I cannot begin to imagine the amount of hot air trapped in that man's head. Seriously it's amazing how he considers himself capable of "analysis" in the first place
It probably cooked his brain how well do you think it is
It feels like Diregentleman never got over the roasting he got from Cartoonshi and he's just taking it out on you. Also, I find it funny how he calls you a mediocre UA-camr when he's just that.
Keep in mind this supposed professional writer's only impactful work was writing a podcast,
you know the one medium that doesn't need a script.
No it wasn’t?
@@Dragonage2ftw Yes it was his only noteworthy piece of media is associated is Less is Morgue and Heads of Sierra Blanca.

@@thedarkmasterthedarkmaster Exactly, also there is no proof that that was something that they got paid for or that they write for a living. What is DG's actual job that provides the bulk of their income because that fact there isn't more work of theirs that I can easily find online tells me that writing is NOT IT.
I really hate these people: the guys who think anything sci-fi/fantasy, any shows not live action, anything with too much action, and any games besides sports are for children and you should just grow up. Like them: spending all of their time on Twitter, in Starbucks or the club trying to get laid, and watching football or whatever sit-com/reality TV show is popular now.
I’m struggling to grasp your argument. I mean, I agree with the first half; Liking any of those things doesn’t make you childish, but what’s the second half supposed to mean?
@@robymammon610 sorry, never have been good with words. At least not consistently.
I meant that there are certain things that people attach to being an adult (and other things) that have nothing to do with it, but people treat it like it’s part of the definition. The inverse of “you can’t do that, it’s for kids”: the “your a child if you don’t do this”.
Like, how people will say that you need to drink to be an adult, or get laid, or have a car, etc (I know those don’t apply everywhere).
I never watched any of the drama videos and when I try to watch them I don't have any clue who are half of the youtubers mentioned and I get lost. So I approve more videos like this

"You didn't talk about all that other stuff"
When people use this kind of argument they aways ignore the fact you can't consume every piece of media out there, it's literally impossible and even then I don't think it's that big of a deal.

The guy is more worried about insulting you in many areas of his video from what I'm gathering. I think that by default makes his critique invalid.
What exactly has Diregentleman even worked on to where he can call himself a "professional writer?" Has he ever written any books that got published or screenplays that were made into anything?
A podcast about a nb oc that vores dead people. Idk, never watch it since I didn't give a damn about it a enough to care about hearing it
@@rayannasmith2336 that sounds disturbing 😳
Mostly Horror/Comedy or Normal Horror stuff.
I was wondering if you would ever tackle these videos. Dude really does make a lot of strawman points and spread misinformation but that's typical whenever someone tries to respond to JAR. Also better deal with what Cartoonshi said otherwise another drama's gonna be on your hands.

Oh that TOTALLY was his point he attempted to make here, knowing this is the same guy who tried to argue in his SVTFOE video that just because Infinity War had the same issue the ending did, its A-OK because "popular thing does x therefore its OK for others to do it even if it's a very serious flaw in writing".
Vi got beaten by Dicker, who turned into a monster because of shimmer, and she got beaten by Savica (in Act 2), who has a mechanic arm which was powered by shimmer itself.
24:42 you know he has no argument when be complains about lusting over Lady Dimitrescu.
Does he even know who that character is? I still remember all the memes of people wanting to be stepped on by her 😂
Beautiful. Thanks Mr. Robot :). (Believe it or not, but I'm pretty sure your channel was a part of the reason I started considering weather or not I had autism. Got an official diagnosis recently... So another toast 🥂.)
Guess the best writers have the shortest fuses.
Never heard of this guy before but damn, he sounds like he has a lot to prove. Putting it lightly.
Me too.

Also DireGentleman, just because IMDB exists, doesn't mean someone like JAR is immediately Nostalgia Critic or Cinema Snob, and can pull that information out of a hat.

Also, if i were to identify your magnim opus, it would be your "All Versions of Goku vs All versions of Superman" video series.
Woah, woah, woah. Did he seriously say that Revenge of the Sith is one of the worst movies of all time? Even being hyperbolic, that’s a molten hot take.
