I just roasted some blue corn this weekend and mashed in......had a really nice popcorn scent to it. Hopefully be ready to run this weekend! Going to have to try to smoke some corn next time!
just mashed in my own version of calvados/ distilled apple cider I added some spice and carawheat malt. tasted good going for an apple pie shine/ brandy for the fall . first time using the carawheat . but it gave the mash a deeper flavor.
I made a Smokey bourbon by using two pounds of heavy pleated malt in my grain bill. Love it. It’s more than a slight smoke taste. Look forward to seeing how this turns out.
Hay, Randy. Great video! Just one thing, with the brew house efficiency adjustment. 648 gp with an eff. of 80% is 518.4 gp! An easier way to calculate is 540/0.80= 675. Or (540/80)*100=675. For the rest, love your content.
Quick question. Ive been experimenting with making bourbon. I used 6row barley malted wheat and corn. So far ive done about 4 batches but every batch has a smell and taste that i cant explain and have never smelled or tasted in any other bourbon. Does the 6row do that? What would you recommend to fix it?
@@stillworksandbrewing ok gotcha. Im currently trying an experiment with just a corn mash so i can isolate the taste i am also trying it with oats instead and a peated malted barley. I guess ill have some answers hopefully in another week or so. I’ll definitely look into the wheat and see if that was it.
Great video, but could you please explain why you chose the percentages of each grain? It seems so random but I’m sure you have a reason. It would be nice to know why you chose those amounts
I just finished a white king corn run with soft red wheat malted rye and I used smoked honey malted barley I smoked half of the red wheat about 100 lb in my smoker gently the whole thing has come out absolutely outstanding we filled a 30 gallon barrel see you in 4 years lol
Amazon has these little submersible 110 heaters I don't submerge them all the way just the stainless steel part you can hang it from your ceiling I had my water up to 240° no problem and quick too I used two heaters cheap $28 unplug them before you touch the water for safety reasons but they definitely brought the water up over 200 for me to drop my corn in and then the two barrel heaters on each side could keep up at that point with the thick corn mash. I one time used two stainless steel 1500 w heaters submersible and warmed up 150 gallons no problem to 178°
Also, please explain how you got the pounds for each grain. I didn’t see the math that you used to get those amounts I could be wrong, but I don’t feel like that was covered in here. Could you please explain
On your worksheet, you have Brew house efficieny. It should be Brew house efficiency. Also, to calculate the target points the formula is (Sg - 1) X 1000. You make the calculation correctly but your worksheet leaves off the multiplication by 1000. I enjoy your videos - keep up the good work!
I guess making a mash bill was useless...after adding all that water you could start eyeballing it from the start and whatever comes out on the other side, right?

Absoutly love a nice smoked whiskey.. Keep uo the great work on this series if videos... I guss there will be more smoked grains...

im looking for a light smoke taste
Pretty cool that your corn picked up the smoke. Did you cold smoke it. Great idea!
no I used a smoker pellet grill plus a smoke tube
Randy, you are always great to watch. I really like your water management setup! Do you filter your water before it hits your brew/still house?
no I have one line i filter if it is used to in anything i drink
@@stillworksandbrewing Thank you for your response. I guess filtration would reduce the whole terroir thing.
Love the breakdown of your mashbill.
cheers

I dont have a answer for you i use a lot of 6 row neve had a problem i would lean more on the wheat maybe

Could you please explain how you were smoking your corn what you used etc.
I have a pellet smoker grill and i used a smoke tube filled with wood pellets and smoked for 4 hours
@@stillworksandbrewing nice thank you. What kind of wood pellets did you use?

it is a recipe that works for my taste everyones can be different

cool
What is that orange thing you have on your mash tun?
that is a heating belt to help maintain temp.
@@stillworksandbrewing nice. Can you use that to heat the mash tun and cook vs using a hot plate?
what if you ran through mill and did a basic mill for a real coarse grind and then smoked it?
thats a great idea I might have to try that next time and see how it turns out thanks

have to check out thanks
can you post a link to your sheet?
send me a email to stillworksandbrewing@gmail.com and ill get it to you

in the ingredient section adjusted target points divide by ang. PPG = pounds needed

Lucky you noticed that spelling mistake, it could have ruined the brew.....😅
cheers
@@stephendilworth It’s a hazard of being a teacher.
Can I smoke cracked corn or does it have to be whole corn?
Hi Dave I dont know but i am going to try it next time to see how it turns out Cheers
What pH meter are you using? Calibration?
it was a cheap one i got many years ago and yes you have to cal. once in a wile
Is there a place where I can order a brew sheet tablet.
I was so going to smoke my corn like tis but you beat me too it lol
LOL
question.... you think it would be possible to smoke steamed rolled corn? I think thats what it is.. I know it is steamed and rolled
I don’t see why not sounds good
@stillworksandbrewing meant steamed and flaked
I guess making a mash bill was useless...after adding all that water you could start eyeballing it from the start and whatever comes out on the other side, right?

21.6 pounds in 6 gallons is more than I use. I usually go for 3 pounds per gallon on an all-grain mash, looking for 1.060s.g. and 7% ABV.
cheers
