Cutting pineapples in half with wooden swords. Shit, those RPGs I've been playing all my life lied to me. That shit should be cleaving the heads off goblins.
A few observations (uhm akshuallys) from a sword collecting nerd who watches channels such as skallagrim, scholagladiatoria, etc.: From the look of it, Joerg, the handle seems to actually fit your hand pretty well for a viking style sword, but you would certainly know the size of your own hands better than I. As for the "blood line", that's a fuller, which is a structural and weight reducing construction, nothing to do with bloodletting or vacuum reducing, as is often incorrectly stated. It was good of you to compare the swords, showing the difference between a modern Cold Steel brand reproduction and the real historical dimensions. Another advantage of the plywood is that it gives a pseudo damascus look (not exactly historical, as i understand it, but certainly adds to the "cooliness" factor). All in all, great build! I may have to try to copy it one day in my own workshop! I'd be interested to discover the impact resistance of the crossguard and pommel sections when made with plywood.
Joerg, why not simply remind your audience about your patreon. This time don’t promise goals that will cost a huge amount of money, but simply state you need it to carry on making videos. We all love your videos and don't want to see you stop, also it would give you the freedom to work on projects YOU want. Edit: Great to see loads of people agree, and I'm sorry about the grammar I was very drunk!
Joerg you're an inspiration to young and old people everywhere keep up the great educational vids, hope this year is a prosperous one for you! Best of luck.
Wear a respirator Jorg! My grandpa is currently having life-threatening complications due to doing woodwork and painting in his younger years without one.
Baba Yaga It largely depends on what kinds of woods are used. Stuff like Bloodwood, Purpleheart, Ebony, et cetera can be seriously harmful, but something like pine or oak is harmless.
I just imagine him getting mugged and being like "this is the double barrel slingshot Annihilator 3000, Let me show u it's features!" *mugger gets sent flying*
Thank you Vikings for being great sponsors. You stepped up when Joerg was unfairly demonetized and kept his great channel alive. Plus your game is pretty good.
Wood hardener or wood petrifier would be perfect for that project. I used it on some knife handles before shaping and I couldn't believe how MUCH harder it made the wood...I know it's in the name but I wasn't expecting the degree of hardness that it achieved
I've never seen a man that happy destroying his own hard work. Such time and care he puts into everything he makes and enjoys every part of it with a warm, broad smile on his face. The world needs more people like Joerg. I always smile when I watch his videos no matter what mood I am in. Good show.
The sword looks amazing! Very detailed, very precise, looks like you nailed the dimensions head on! The layers in the plywood also look absolutely beautiful! And way sharper than I thought a wooden sword could be!!
I like how you are honest about your sponsors. Unlike other channels i love to download your sponsored content because i don´t feel like I´m scammed :-)
Guten Morgen mein Freund. Danke, Herb
JoergSprave make new Zealand tribes patu I has its great for cutting its made from hard wood and stone you has a two handed version and single handed version is awesome fun chopping things with it awesome videos dude the ply wood gas it nice pattern like welding Damascus steel too💕👌🐺
Omg omg, JoergSprave answered to me! I don't know what to do!!! All joke aside, keep the great videos coming, you're one of the few you tubers where I purposely disable addblock for you! Cheers!
"Blood groove" is a nickname for a fuller. I am fairly certain that Jörg understands a fuller's purpose, as he mentioned it when talking about the sword weight.
You know you enjoy watching something when it starts off with a sponsor support call but turns out to showcase great craftsmanship, fun, and surprising results.
You could burnish the edges by rubbing along them very hard with polished metal such as a screw driver shaft, or socket wrench shaft, compressing the wood fibres and making a harder edge.
Jorge, the groove in the center is called a Fuller, it is meant to reduce the weight of the material so the user is not swinging around many pounds of sword.
I think you should sell some of your products at an auction, us fans would LOVE to have some of your old projects that weren't keep worthy for you. Consider having the auction open to online community as some cannot travel across the wold to pay $50 for a quality german slinghot
You my good sir deserve what i'm going to say. You are a really great person, I have been watching this channel for awhile now and i noticed a couple of things. First i really admire your dedication to this channel, you loved what you do and you always find ways to make this channel interesting. Secondly, i noticed that you have never once give a bad review of anything. You always sees the good thing in every inventions and i find that is quite admirable. Lastly, you are one of the most honest and humble you-tuber i've seen and oh god that laughter. Please continue to be you and bring us great entertainment and inspiration to be creative. sincerely thank you. ps: Pardon my bad English.
Blood groove does sound cooler. Though I find the name "Fuller" interesting as well, simply because a sword with a fuller is the precise opposite of fuller
Historical Viking era swords had short handles. From what I understand this is because they were used in a specific way and the hilt shape and size lends itself to that. So the original owner of this sword might not have had small hands at all as the handle is designed for the users hand to take up all the space. Also, its a fuller, not a blood groove. Blood grooves are not an actual thing. Fullers serve two main functions; they reduce weight, and they increase the stiffness of the blade thereby making the sword better for thrusting. Having said that its a great looking piece and the craftsmanship is top notch as always!
The sword on the pineapple was awesome ! So much fun watching ya Joerg Sprave ya got to be the most interesting person on your neighborhood block ! Love the builds !
Interesting fact - viking swords were not used for stabbing, authentic ones are almost round at tip. Stabbing techniques (and weapons specialized on it) came to be when slashing weapons (first swords - against low armored enemy, than fashions against enemies in mail) were countered by early versions of plate armor, like brigantines.
I have never once downloaded an actually sponsored thing but this actually will be my first the game looked alright and I wanted to help him out if I could so why not.
Short handles are very common on early medieval swords. (9-8cm) It's not because they had smaller hands but the swords should ideally lock into your hand. Plus in my opinion, clenching a sword in a hammer grip is not the best. The pommel should provide a lock for your pinkie when holding it more in a sabre grip. You get extended reach when thrusting and the sword also more agile in the hand.
I agree it is partially provocation we use among knifemakers because some weapon nerds would kill for this term :D we don't wanna spread the fault definition further thats all. Keep a your channel going may no regulations fall upon this channel :)
Hello Jörg, I know it is a bit of nitpicking but that is not a 'blood groove' but a fuller. I am sure you already know that, but it feels so cringy on such a nice project... Keep up the great work!
The groove is called a fuller. When a blade like that was forged the fuller was pounded in using a bar in order to flatten out the sword and to provide extra strength to the blade.

JoergSprave - First of all, great work on this! Second, I think you would enjoy learning fire hardening and fire straightening techniques. In ancient times, before stone-hafted spears were invented, the end of a long staff was put into a fire until it started to smoke, at which point it would be scraped on a rough rock to remove the burnt and burning parts and put back into the fire for another round. This was done until the staff had a point and the remaining wood would then be much denser and stronger than it would have been. The whole shaft would be put over the fire until very hot, but not burning, which makes it much more pliable and able to take the bend you give to it. A rock that had a hole drilled into it was used as a tool for straightening the heated wood. This straightening technique was also done with arrows and the reverse (giving a bend) was done to make boomerang-like weapons
Love that Damascus Plywood Pattern :D Great job my friend :))

With wood and metal quality today, you might as well just make a wooden sword with steel edge inserts. Wonder how that would go?
Probably would have decent performance, i just fear about the wood's durability after much use.
Steven Boelke That’s actually a really good idea
Steven Boelke search "Maquahuitl"
Steven Boelke it would float too which could be handy
THAT WAS MY IDEA GOD DAMN IT JUST

"My fists are like supermarket chickens"
it's not a bloodgrove, it's a fuller...
i was seeking for someone to comment this. i forgot what the purpose was of these grooves though. do you know?
john pardon don't quote me not a swordsman but, it would successfully break a vacuum in a wound making getting the weapon out again easier.
it makes the sword lighter, more user friendly
"Blood groove" is a nickname for a fuller. I am fairly certain that Jörg understands a fuller's purpose, as he mentioned it when talking about the sword weight.
john pardon 2 purpouses: removes weight from the blade, making it quicker. Also the H shape of a fullered blade makes it stiffer.
You know you enjoy watching something when it starts off with a sponsor support call but turns out to showcase great craftsmanship, fun, and surprising results.

Jeff of Taofledermaus could really use some of that new ballistic gelatin, lol.

THICC!
I like how you always stomp your right foot during a sword strike. I'm sure it adds a shockwave effect to the poise of the opponent.
Joerg, can we get a ridiculously large sword made of wood please ?
Dude, you have childs?
You have a "father feeling" and thats awesome.
Love tour vídeos, and Im having fun playing vikings thanks for the shield!
I have added "supermarket chickens" to my vocabulary.
This wooden replica is truer to the original than most blacksmiths can come up with. Great work!
Joerg with the way your elbows look, I'm starting to think that a backhand swing from anything will cleanly cut a pineapple lol.
It's cool to watch the layers of plywood come out while you're making the sword.
you should really wear a mask when you are sanding
"My hands are like super market chickens" cracked me up😂😂😂
Would you consider doing a tour of the JoergSprave rubber band armory? and maybe a test shot or two of each of your creations?
I don't have an armory. I have a heap of things. Once a year or so I get a garbage container here and throw most of the stuff in it.
I think you should sell some of your products at an auction, us fans would LOVE to have some of your old projects that weren't keep worthy for you. Consider having the auction open to online community as some cannot travel across the wold to pay $50 for a quality german slinghot
I don't have product liability insurance - and many if not all of my contraptions are unsafe prototypes.
Sad that some of these laws exist. In Austalia, you need a liscence for a crossbow and airsoft is illegal. I Kinda wish laws would relax a little
And the plywood's layered nature gives it a Damascus look. Nicely done sir!!
When it's 4 am but you just saw that Joerg uploaded a video
Dude you are one of my favorite youtubers there is you should keep on doing your weapons because there is no one like you!!!
And.... half the community get triggered to "facepalm" at the mention of a "blood groove".

Fuller* not blood line/groove. A fuller maintains strength while lowering the blades weight. nothing to do with blood or sticking
I prefer blood groove. Sounds so much cooler.
that is very true
Blood groove does sound cooler. Though I find the name "Fuller" interesting as well, simply because a sword with a fuller is the precise opposite of fuller
Great job and it works way better than some people would think cause that cut on the ballistics gel is impressive
But can you end them rightly?
Historical Viking era swords had short handles. From what I understand this is because they were used in a specific way and the hilt shape and size lends itself to that. So the original owner of this sword might not have had small hands at all as the handle is designed for the users hand to take up all the space.
Also, its a fuller, not a blood groove. Blood grooves are not an actual thing. Fullers serve two main functions; they reduce weight, and they increase the stiffness of the blade thereby making the sword better for thrusting.
Having said that its a great looking piece and the craftsmanship is top notch as always!

No rubber :(
Zarock no ruber
The groove down the middle is called a fuller and not bloodgroove. It was simply for making the sword lighter, not for having blood run through it.
Editing is much better
That is such a beautiful sword; the wood grain layers of the plywood were perfect for this project.
So who wants to be the first to make a joke about Jeorg having trouble with "staying straight?"
What part of "no raunchy jokes" did you NOT understand? :)
What? I wasn't paying attention. The features you showed me must of been too interesting. It's your fault. Shame on you.
Joerg can show me his features anytime ;)

Hi Joerg, there is no such like BLOODLINE nor BLOODGROOVE :D this is used only to keep blade relatively strong with reduced weight ;)
I know, it is a fuller. Blood groove sounds so much better though.
Although it’s not a “blood channel”, sometimes a blodwarp or blood eddy image would form in the pattern weld along the fuller.

The patterning from the plywood layers looks kinda cool! Must make it a little easier to shape too, having a built in 'guide.'

Please don’t call those blood grooves because they are totally unrelated to blood. The purpose of the grooves is to make the sword lighter.
