Lego reveals are getting less exciting because Lego seems to be dropping a $250 set every month. And rumors 3+ months before the release of a set never help make reveals more exciting.

      @nooneofimportance1734 Рік тому +4

I would disagree that rumors hurt the reveals. For example, sets such as the Venator, Gringotts, and Avengers tower, for example, have extreme amounts of hype around them due to inherent fan desire.
The issue is really oversaturation. It's no longer an exciting event to see what the big D2C is for the month/next two months, but rather it's seeing the 3 D2Cs releasing in the first five days of each month, all usually priced at a minimum of $200.

@@nooneofimportance1734 the more the hype, the higher the expectation.

They are ramming sets down our throats. They are ramming so many sets, that the novelty is wearing off.

I think the term D2C has involved into 18+ as the new term because as you say a lot of retailers sell the special big sets. Also I get excited bout these sets then see the price tag like Gringotts I want it but £370! Seriously I can’t justify buying everything I want because it’s just to much money these days I have to be super picky

The only exciting reveals now are the sets that dont get leaked

I think a big way they could fix this issue is to just reveal things earlier. They always wait until the very last minute and then they always get leaked by someone on the internet. Also making less D2C’s to make them feel more special

Lego is a mass-market company. Focusing on the super fans who actively seek out rumors isn't a smart strategy.
For the larger market, announcing the set closer to its release makes much more sense. You want the hype to be at its highest when people can actually make a purchase, not months earlier.

I definitely think it’s the over saturation. It’s hard to be excited about something that happens over and over and over again, with very little breathing room in between

I tend to respond "Oh, great. Another Lego set that I'll never be able to afford."

I think a lot is fans having high expectations and their own desires of what rumored set should be. When I heard The Lord of the Rings was coming back and it was going to be a big set, my brain instantly went to it being a detailed Helms Deep or Minas Tirith. So when I finally heard it was Rivendell, all of my excitement just washed away. And when the pictures were finally revealed I still didn’t have much hype. Now I still bought the set because I love The Lord of the Rings but I waited a few months and I still haven’t built it because my mind keeps going “This could have been Minas Tirith.” I don’t blame LEGO for that but it is something that contributes to the lack of hype.

There has been a very similar pattern of oversaturation and diminishing hype in the Magic the Gathering products over the last few years too. Something about the last few years has seen so many of the so called "hobby products" going all out and overstimulating their fans ability to care.

I'm so glad you brought that up. I, personally, am invested in Transformers toys as well, and that whole issue is affecting things over there too.
      I appreciate the insight.

I'm not sure much LEGO would be able to keep this up, otherwise.

Lego has become like Hollywood in being lazy and doing too many remakes. Make new great castle & pirate sets or something else instead of remakes of past sets.

The short and simple, there is too much product at too high of a price point. I used to buy sets under 200.- (I've never nabbed anything over), now I rarely buy anything over 50.- and usually just buy loose parts, to be fair I'm mostly a MOC maker and don't keep sets around for long but regardless there is nothing I've been excited about, the last thing was the Lion Knights Castle which for 200.- or less I Would have bought, emphasis on WOULD.

My two cents: aside from the often unjustified price increase that has affected almost all sets, I think another important factor is the lack of classic Lego themes.
There is an overabundance of licensed themes, or original but decidedly stranger themes (and even these overpriced, like the recent dreamzz).
Couldn't there be room for a rotational return of themes such as Pirates, Castle, Space, but which goes beyond the large set costing more than 70 euros? Couldn't we go back to having small, medium and big sets, as happened 20 years ago? Like, a Castle line with 4-5 small sets (battlepack with knights, sets with villagers and a small themed building, like a well, etc.), some medium ones (a small inn, a small-sized fortress) and a castle.

    1. Rumors are a HUGE factor. If you don't follow the rumors, you're delightfully surprised by sets that align with your interests. Lord of the Rings fans who weren't expecting Rivendell lost their minds when it was announced.
    2. Along these lines are sets that we've come to expect, with or without rumors. Lego Ideas sets, by their nature, are pre-announced to the Lego community. Once Ninjago Gardens was announced (a surprise!), additional Ninjago City sets are much more expected. Modular Buildings, Creator Expert cars, etc. are expected on a more or less annual basis. The Nintendo console reduces the surprise of the Atari console, the Roller Coaster reduces the surprise of the Loop Coaster, and the life-sized typewriter reduces the surprise of the life-sized globe. Lego has done so many amazing sets in recent years that it's become difficult to surprise us with ambitious designs or build techniques.
But I think the biggest factor is the rumors. A set name and a projected price leaks months ahead of time, and the community rushes to give their opinions before even seeing the set yet. Then it happens again when we get more details (piece count, # of minifigs, etc.) and again when the first blurry image leaks. Is it any wonder that the eventual set reveal isn't a big surprise?

To be honest, what starts to kill my desire to get these 18+ sets is the box art
Black background looks """serious""" and that's my problem with it- box like that doesn't catch my attention, they are boring, sterile and are just missing the magic- just compare the set 10312 and 10232, the later one looks way better and makes me want to grab my wallet immediately

If you really want something, and it really excites you, knowing that it's coming, shouldn't have no effect on you. Over the years I saw Ninjago leaks, I got surprised by some things, I even got to know what's coming before anyone else in the world, and each time, getting the sets made me equally happy.

Launches are spoiled for me by LAN influencers that flaunt everything sent to them early. I watch the content because I'm interested in the products, but then they wear out all the novelty and excitement. I wish Lego would block hands-on reviews until launch week
