I messed up my Schumachers lol
Modern Lego DC is so sad. Lego’s negligence has really ruined what used to be one of their best themes
It was the best because it felt like all their other in-house action themes and that is why it was good
Could say the same with Warner Brothers ruining the live action movies.
(Hot take) I kinda wish that we never got marvel sets so lego would focus on dc instead they were always so much better back then
you mean Lego Batman?
This sounds like someone who can't afford the big 18+ sets.
LEGO turned me into a big DC fan as a kid-
This is so real
While I’m loving getting some firsts with Batman Returns last year or Batman the Animated Series this year. And would love a Forever set next year for the anniversary.
They need to remake the 2006 / 2012 wave. Make new sets for the modern era. Chuck in a few characters we’ve never gotten. I’d be ecstatic
I think about the build quality of themes like Friends and Creator, and I just get lost in the wonderment of a DC theme with that perspective of design. Would be incredible.
@ashnflash Hush, Mad Hatter, Ra’s Al Ghul with the old Wolverine hair, clayface MINIFIG
And 2016-2018
@@velvetstarlings we don't even have a proper Raven minifigure yet just a TTG variant and we need the other sidekicks.
@@dero_oan your comment reminded me I didn’t own the TTG Raven fig - u cost me $50 LOL
Forrestfire single-handedly got me into Batman
I have no doubt that his influence is credit to so many DC fans in general.
I was watching him when I was 5, forgot about him for a decade and then came back to him. Honestly it’s funnier now than it was before
So true, I didn’t speak English when I was 8 but I enjoyed his content so much and I still do to this day
Dang, this video made me realize just how cool the old Batman stuff was. The point about the 2006-2008 being better because it was designed more like an in-house theme too is something I had never realized before, but it makes so much sense now that you point it out. Themes are always better when they just give the designers free reign and allow them to do what they want, rather than sticking to a specific script.
The MCU obviously overshadowed the DC product line ups from late 2016 to 2020(ish). But now mcu hype is at an all time low, Lego are in the perfect position to release comic-based and older-movie/show based DC comics sets. They are admittedly doing that, for Batman and Batmobiles, but there's a vocal demand for other DC sets. Here's hoping that with the BTAS sets, we can eventually get some Justice League unlimited sets or something - or at least a more consistent run of varied Lego BTAS sets.
I’ll also gladly take Batman sets that have Justice League members included as well. Just so we can get some character variety going
@@PenPlays yeah, at this point, I’d just take a new version of Superman…
I think part of why LEGO DC sets felt so much more like aj original theme is also how much wild variety and high concept characters there are in it, given how much longer it's been around than it's competition. These characters have all had a million bizzare adventures and vehicles that of course a Joker trike or a Cyborg helicopter fit right in. Also it has so many weird and wacky characters like Lobo or Polka dot man who don't feel out of place with Ultra agents characters
I first got into Lego DC and Lego as a whole by watching the Lego Batman 2 movie endlessly as a kid. Even if DC was technically a licensed theme at the time, Lego made it feel like an original theme like Ninjago but just featuring DC’s characters. I feel like Lego is having a bit of identity crisis with licensed themes because they only depend on movie tie ins and nostalgia. I do appreciate having my favorite Marvel movies and scenes having sets, but it’s gotten to such a degree that these themes have no originality and feel they’re only aimed for nostalgia based adults. I desperately hope that for James Gunn’s Superman film we’ll get sets for it and the new DC movie verse, but I honestly doubt it
It’s amazing just how many folks name LEGO Batman 2 as the source of their DC fandom. Despite the prevalence of the original LEGO Batman Videogame, I feel it was the sequel that had the most influence. Especially since you could buy the minifigs from the game in actual sets out at the time.
They better bring back LEGO dc in the future like especially next year
Technically it isn’t gone, but it is all Batman currently, so I get what you mean
@@PenPlays we got the start of the new DCU next year
I really hope for James Gunn’s Superman to have sets, but I doubt it with how Lego ignored 2023’s 4DC films
@@user-dv7ls2st1i that’s because they were DCEU and nothing really that big
@@griffinholmes8024 Still, there is zero way a Shazam, Flash, Blue Beetle or Aquaman set wouldn't have sold. Straight up none. Even if the films underperform, the characters are still superheroes. Also, most sets coming out for Marvel and DC are 18+ now.
A true no one talks about. I'm from 2005 and my first actual contact with superheroes was with Batman in The Lego Movie, and after that his cartoon, then Iron Man, then the MCU. From 10 years ago to this date my love for DC, Marvel, Comics and now even Manga just keeps expanding and what's always following it are legos, which I still collect here and there. It all began with Batman, not any Batman, Lego Batman, The Goat.
Lego Star Wars and Batman got me into both of their franchises.
I would not have been as huge as a fan of DC as I am without LEGO DC.
So many people feel the same as you. It’s so influential
Something I really liked about that first generation of batman sets, is even though a lot of design is inspired by the animated series or the Burton/schumacher films, they still felt like original designs. A lot of current Batman/DC sets are directly basing their designs on the pre-exiting sources material, but in that first generation, it felt like LEGO own unique vision.
I for one wish someone in a position of power at Lego is a big fan of your works.
I hope so too. I’d love for this to be reaching their eyes and ears.
Glad brickfilmers got a moment in the limelight. Usually our community doesn't get much traction outside if our own circles, so it's much appreciated
I just don’t understand why they don’t make Batman sets with other justice league members in the set. Does LEGO think a Batmobile with Superman in the set will sell worse than a Batmobile with only Batman in it.
Hopefully Lego Does something for James Gunn's DC universe when Superman legacy releases
I am not hopeful, sadly
I think there should be a mix of original DC sets and DC sets based on older movies.
I can agree with this, Lego was a huge part of my childhood, especially Lego Batman, when I learned about BTaS I would reenact some of the scenes with my legos
I have always preferred LEGO's in-house themes, so I hadn't really considered that some of LEGO's licensed themes had elements of their in-house themes. You're absolutely right; DC sets from the mid 20000s and 2010s had a unique appeal to them that direct movie tie-in sets don't have. LEGO's licensed themes have definitely lost some of their charm in their attempts to appear as screen-accurate as possible.
I wonder if we'll ever see a return to this style of in-house licensed sets. Both LEGO Star Wars and Marvel have tried out those small mechs, and I believe we'll be getting a small Batman mech soon. Hopefully they are a sign of things getting a little more creative for LEGO's licensed themes in the future.
they 2006/ 2007 and the 2012 Line Ups are my absolute favourites and i have lots ofthose sets and minifigures
It’s wild to me that Superman was last released in a CMF series back in 2019 which most people might have never found sad times please bring other heroes back to DC 😢😊
This is so true for me I was given a dsi when I was 5 and I only had a few games one of which was lego Batman 1 and because of that game I am now the Batman fan I am today
4:18 is that a dig at Indiana Jones? If so, how dare you!
I won’t stand for this blasphemy. Lego Indiana jones is S tier and the game was fantastic.
i couldnt agree more Lego Batman 1 and the villains origin texts in the levels turned me in a major Batman and DC Fan
its funny seeing these pictuees/stills when I own a decent chunk of them, cant tell you how much i love the vid. Nice work with your research and perspective 🙏
Thank you very much
that game Lego Batman also shaped my viev of favourite characters it turned in a big fan of the evil trinity ... Joker , Penguin and Riddler
I’m proud to say that the first wave of Batman sets in 2012 and the LEGO Batman 2 movie is what made me branch out into DC when I was 6. Now it makes me depressed that there r barely any actual sets anymore how we’re just getting constant buildable figures, mechs and Batmobiles
Bro this is so good
Thank you. I appreciate it
It’s true. I was introduced to Batman as a young young kid but Lego Batman one was the game that cemented passion for this character. Batman is and always will be the best.
Agree. Also, I would say that LEGO has done something similar for Star Wars. People have been leaving the franchise for sure, but LEGO has done A LOT to mitigate the shrinkage of the fan base. LEGO has absolutely helped Disney retain fans for a Star Wars franchise that looks like it is slowing losing evergreen status. And by evergreen, I don't mean evergreen for LEGO, but retailers have been dropping Star Wars toys/merch. The only thing that is selling right now that is Star Wars is Black Series, and LEGO (LEGO even moreso).
The thing with LEGO Star Wars is that they focus on ensuring features are there still, as well as demanded characters, even if they might not be as relevant as they would like.
For DC, we’re lucky if the Batmobile has a hinged cockpit.
I started collecting when Covid-19, a little bit late for DC good times, anyways I'm trying to focus currently on getting DC minifigures, still so many to find! Hope Lego get back to the golden days :(
Great to hear how Lego got you into DC... I was a DC fan first and foremost, after getting into the comics in the mid-late 1970s, so all LEGO DC sets always get my attention... and I wish Lego would have explored the comics a bit more.
This gonna be a good one 🫡
I hope it delivers!
Lego batman was my first batman media
Kinda wish we had gotten more bigfigs from the DC side like Grundy and especially Doomsday. The designs for those characters from LEGO Batman 3 were so good and unique. I know would've probably cost a lot more to produce those compared to the ones we saw in LEGO DC Super-Villains, but even that game had some decent bigfig designs I wish were translated physically.
Great video!!
Thank you so much!
Great point! I never thought of it like this, but much like your experience, I actually got into DC and Marvel and many other franchise because of their LEGO sets. I hope LEGO sees your video and takes notes!
I hope they do too. Thank you for sharing your experience
Yeah. As a LEGO fan I miss stuff like the TIE Crawler. Though to be fair, Star Wars constantly had a wealth of must adapt material with all the content they push out. I with they’d also make stuff like Visions sets but they just don’t have the slots
I swear Lego Batman the videogame shaped an entire generation of Batman fans. I never cared about Batman or DC but after playing it and seeing all those cool villains with their crazy vehicles and reading their backstorys I became so invested. This theme could be such a goldmine if they just made sets around the villains, even following their current way of only using the Joker. Jokerland, the funhouse, the steamroller, Jokers Helicopter, etc were insane and theres so much cool stuff you could do. I honestly feel really sorry for kids these days that they grow up so boring.
I’ve been saying this about Marvel for years. LEGO abandoned making OG sets other than the occasional Spider-Man one, and DC has just disappeared almost all together.
Cool point.
I miss the old sets
I swear you made a really good history/retrospect of Lego DC a while back. Why was it removed? It was so good! Glad you made this one.
It was taken down due to more facts becoming available to us. Not good to spread misinformation. I’m glad you like this one all the same!
My first exposure to dc was that movie made of the cutscenes from lego Batman 2. After watching that I began watching all the movies and shows from dc. You are completely right
As much as I was initially opposed to James Gunn being at the helm of the new DC, now I am fully on board. I’m still somewhat skeptical, but I’m excited to see what a fresh new DC cinematic universe take can look like, and hope that these movies are good enough for LEGO to stop making excuses and start making DC sets.
that 2007 batmobile and forrestfire literally made me a dc fan.
I’m subbing
Thank you, I appreciate it
As a Teen who loves DC and lego, they only thing you can really get is a Batmobile or a Batplane that stays common, but you know what else stays common…the Minifigures it’s always Batman, joker, and maybe a Harley if where lucky. There’s no other options, I just want something like a Superman, Robin, or anything to that matter that isn’t Batman or joker.
its insane how i never really acknowledged this connection until now lol ive always said im a lego DC fan not really the biggest lego fan
I completely agree. It was thanks to the LEGO's own version of DC universe that I came to love the real DC characters, as well as the introduction to it itself. Though it may be controversial, I still love the LEGO's DC a lot more than the DCEU universe and wish the original theme would be reborn, along with their own LEGO DC movies...
“These adults and their wives!?”… lol.. excellent video overall!!!!
It is ashame that we don't get legos version of batman anymore
If Lego Juniors Defend the Batcave didn’t exist, I would not be a DC fan. Or a Lego fan. Crazy how one set is able to destroy my bank account.
When was the last time we had a lego set with ANY other justice league members!!!
love that you made this video. getting frustrated with lego dc as they dont put any efffort into sets. they have lots of marvel content which i am happy for but i keep on waiting for not only batman but also his batfamily and the justice league.
Exactly how I turned into a DC fan too lol
Growing up in 2000s to early 2010s it was pretty hard to not be a fan of Star Wars or dc especially with clone wars and teen titans ruling over those decades. But now things are kinda dead especially with dc recently from movies, toys, and shows. Kinda sad how that turned out
I’m also someone who got into dc because of the sets. I know some other people who also love dc and often wonder what happened to the amount of dc sets made. I really do hope there’s a change eventually but I don’t know if that will happen
I’m, personally, am worried and am contemplating and idea of a LEGO without DC. I guess if it continues for years to come, I’ll be happy that it’s here
You make some very good points. I got interested in Batman because of LEGO. And not just in Batman. I got into Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lone Ranger, and whatnot thanks to the respective themes, even though sets from these lines were arguably less original than those from Batman and early DC themes.
I also noticed that I am not really interested in new Batman sets. Although I like Burton films, 2023 Batmobile and Batwing just don't feel right. They lack that wackiness and comic style which 2012-2013 sets had. I find more enjoyment in buying those older toys. Funhouse escape, Arkham Asylum, and Arctic Batman vs. Mr. Freeze sets remain my favourite ones to this day. They are so much more inventive and colourful and they are not just "collectible items" we see today.
15:50 Lego did have the 89 Batmobile as a The Flash set but due to Ezra Miller being Ezra Miller, lego refused to make any sets based off the film and changed the Batmobile into a Batman 89 set last minute
It also doesn’t help that the Lego games have been on a hiatus since 2019 with the only release in between being Lego Star Wars the Skywalker saga and, I guess LEGO 2K Drive but that doesn’t really tie into anything specifically. The Lego games were a great platform to tie in people to become fans of the franchises and also the Lego sets they were made to tie in with. Star Wars, marvel, and D.C were all franchises I may have had surface level familiarity before but their Lego tie ins really showed off the specific and interesting parts of the franchises which led to me getting into the other parts of it such as the cartoons. And even the video games themselves had their own universe for fans to get invested in like the Lego Batman trilogy being the same universe that’s used in Lego dimensions and also having voice actors carryover to other projects. And now we don’t even know what the next TT Lego game is going to be let alone when it’s releasing.
DC is the Lego franchise that I think is the most depressing especially right now, and it would be impossible for me to put all my thoughts about the theme into a single comment, but it just makes me long for the area of 2012 to 2018.
18+ sets are everywhere
They need to make another lego Batman game
And then selfishly betrayed them
Welcome to growing up
im a DC fan, buy every set, and yet i also buy Marvel sets due to the lack of DC sets.
I miss those whacky vehicle bat sets and villian lairs. the theme still has so mucb potential, im greatful we are still getting sets and hopefully theh do release suoerman sets next yeaf to give the theme hope!
This was me 100%. I loved the original Batman run in 2008, but it wasnt until I was a little older when the 2012 run made me dive into the comic books. I now have 2 full shelves of graphic novels and a closet full of almost all the LEGO Batman sets ever made. I've actually lost a lot of interest in comics lately. Theres a possibility that theres a connection with the current state of LEGO DC, though the state of writing in modern comics has also largely alienated me.
They really need to get back to making DC sets, not just Batman and movie tie ins. This is so infuriating how they don't get that.
2006 batman will never be topped🔥
Nothing quite like it
Is that FF7 music I hear? Under the Rotting Pizza?
The whole video is all FFVIIR music. I had just finished Rebirth when I started editing this video so it was all stuck in my head
Why can’t we get the 2018(ish) DC theme again
I still mad that lego never made Arrowverse sets!!
Heck, during the hype of The Flash (the CW one) they didn’t have a single version of The Flash from any story available. So crazy
Lego DC really is wh a t got me into it the most over the films. I used to love the DC animated films it's just sad what lego dc has become
I felt this mindset shift a little late when Lego fortnight came out.... It didn't feel that Epic games and the Lego grioup were equals but lego was the underodog getting help from the bigger company... This makes no sense as Fortnight is the most popular game at the moment and Lego the most popular toy company. Also I persoanlly I believe we need both IP made into legos and a lego theme made by lego for that veryity and is just fun.
It should be said. LEGO invested $1Billion into EPIC games, and that lead to LEGO Fortnite. So even if LEGO might be the gaming underdog, they aren't exactly small fry either. 1 billion dollars is 1 billion dollars
Michael Schumacher lol
I have made that mistake SO MANY TIMES AND NOW ITS IMMORTALIZED.
Lego has changed its marketing strategies for all of its themes across the board. Adults are being targeted more than ever, even for sets that are seemingly intended for children. There’s no reason for builds in the Monkey Kid theme to be as complex and as detailed as they are for instance. The fact is that DC Comics largely stopped marketing to children as well after 2008. Their biggest movies are all rated PG-13, and they mostly ceased production of cartoons and comics for kids/ general audiences. Lego could definitely do better with their DC theme, but I don’t know if there’s actually a child audience there for it.
Lego DC really lost its soul in the last few years. It makes me really sad because I grew up with the Lego Batman games and all the sets, so to remember a time when the theme was flourishing makes it hurt even more when I look at the current waves. No variety, even though some of the sets are really good. Its just become so stale and overly safe.
I'm all for the revival of Lego DC Superheroes, but I'll always be Marvel first and DC second. I think for the success of both themes it's best if they split into 2 separate themes with their own budgets so we don't have to deal with one overshadowing the other and taking sets away from them.
I agree. Marvel has a lot of struggles to work out rn, however.
Growing up, I never watched any of the animated Batman TV shows for the longest time. When I eventually did I could only find shows like Batman Brave and Bold and Batman Beyond. I also watched through the Burton and Schumacher movies. But for me, I felt it never lived up to the expectations I had from the Lego Batman franchise.
For me, Lego Batman was (and still is) the definitive Batman. I share Penplays experience full heartedly.
What a terrible fucking opinion
@@Therealones745 You didn't plan to elaborate?
The title of the video was "How Lego Created DC Fans." While my personal experience is unusual, it's not f****** stupid in the context of this video.
People like myself were first exposed to Batman because of LEGO sets and games for a large period of time before exploring the other forms of Batman media.
For example, as annoyed as some people have been about shows like Teen Titans GO, which is a spinoff shoe of the original Teen Titans show, you can't get mad at someone who grew up with Teen Titans GO and has more of a personal attachment to it than the original Teen Titans.
You can argue about the quality of art, but you can't argue with someone's personal experience and opinion of art.
I didnt like the lego batman movie sets because none of the builds or minifigures matched with the rest of the dc line
the sets based on the movies were lame and bad ... the last good sets i bought were from Lego Batman Movie ...and a tim burton like batmobile
This vid blows my mind bc I thought me and my brother were the only ones… we got into Lego Batman, then we watched the forestfire101 vids on UA-cam and played the Lego Batman video game - and THEN watched the movies - to this day I own every Lego DC minifig released and that’s all bc of the 2006 wave 🫢
