- The unusual animals found in this week's episode of the List Show are all inspired by Chicago's Field Museum. The List Show is a weekly show where knowledge junkies get their fix of trivia-tastic information. This week, we're on location at The Field Museum in Chicago with Emily Graslie of The Brain Scoop ( / thebrainscoop ) who looks at some rather odd animals.

Emily should be on mental floss more often
Emily definitely falls under the superorder of adorable.
Totally agree, super adorable
Very true! Adorable and knowledgeable, great combo!
Maybe date?
I'd ask her out in a date, but she would just freeze up.
Emily is funny and fun to listen to. Hope to see more of her on here.
WHY SPIDERS?!?!? WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN A WEIRD LOOKING BUTTERFLY?!?!?
There actually WAS a weird looking butterfly
STOP IT! Can't you see its bothering him? STOP IT
Why did they have to bring up whip spiders? I don't mind most spiders but whip spiders just freak me out, especially since I've seen them up close and alive ):
Well done Emily - love this sort of List! Love the injection of humor too!
Emily's so cool. I want to see more Emily.
Finally! Someone explains Remoras. Since the age of 10, 20 years ago, when I began to watch nature documentaries, I've always wondered "What on earth are those fish doing under the sharks?! Are they her children? Her hostages? And why doesn't the narrator mention them? Doesn't he see those fishes? Isn't that crazy?" xD xD 20 years I'm telling you. 20 years!
That's hilarious

I'm very late here, but for anyone else, if there's something you're wondering about, we have the internet. I know it's a new thing, and not well known, but you can investigate anything you want to! Cool, huh?
A spider warning would have been nice...
Not being a pussy would be nice :3
Phobias are irrational an unwanted, like you. :)
I have a phobia of lizards, but I'm not gonna whine cuz someone puts a picture of one on a video (: Nor should I expect them to put a warning incase one of their 5 million viewers is scared of a tiny and harmless critter :)
Arachnophobia is the most common phobia.
And spiders are for the most part harmless, as creepy as you think they are. I just hope you don't kill them for no reason, because if you do, I'll put one up yer shirt when you least expect it >:)
This girl sounds like Jenna Marbles's classy sister
Jenna Marble's classy smart sister.
Jenna Marbles's classy, smart, and attractive sister
Emily should do more biology-related mental floss videos! This one is definitely one of the best.
I love Emily's enthusiasm. Also, I appreciate the tip about not using feces to decorate one's house. I think that's a tip we can all benefit from.
I was all fine watching this until the spider.
Lala....lala....OH MY GOD( fasts forwards) whew
You didn't bring up the platypus.
What about the dickdick
***** I thought most people knew about the Kiwi.. They seriously don't? Lol.
I'm usually a bird person, but I love the whip spider if only for the reason that I love telling Harry Potter fans that the thing "Moody" demonstrates the unforgivable curses on in the 4th movie is a real creature.
I know some viewers don't really like when the mental floss videos aren't of John, but I really like Emily! She's so inspiring; she reminds me that it's totally okay for girls to get excited about science.
You did an awesome job!
I had a caruncle once, he was a Buick.
I got so excited when I saw the title of this video because I LOVE zoology and when I realized you were hosting Emily I got even more excited! I love this show and the brainscoop :) Great episode. Those first couple mammals were so adorable. Can superorder adorable be a thing?
So, I'm just saying that we need more Mental Floss with her hosting.... She's my favorite.
The host of this video looks like she would be a perfect match for Hank Green
She reminds me of Amy from the Big Bang Theory...
This video was awesome and I really love mental floss. Emily was really cool and I started following her stuff over at brain scoop :).
Started slow, but ended up laughing a lot at the humorous one liners. You should do more episodes with Emily!
The pitohui is another unusual animal. It's the only poisonous bird.
Uh oh... someone please, for the love of arachnophobic people, tell me when the spider is?!?!
Rest assured, it is number 16
Whew, thank you so much! :)
I hope to see more of Emily on Mental Floss! And I bet she had the hardest time picking just a small sample of unique animals with all the information knowledge from all the specimens at the Field.
That was the best episode so far.
"Here's something you probably would have been fine knowing about...."
Me: Hmm?
"The WHIP SPIDER!"
Me: *looks up* HOLY SHIIIIIIIII----!!!
The first time I saw one was in a video where it had her babies crawling off of her. I still have nightmares.
Am I the only one who wishes that there were more female regulars? I feel like there are male regulars, and female guests. I sort of wish there were more female regulars, more women who showed up in multiple shows, and more men who showed up only once. Maybe Jonathan Frakes. I want Jonathan Frakes to do an episode.
+SilentBudgie You guys might want to check out the "A Mighty Girl" page on Facebook. That's where I learned about Heddy Lamarr's contributions to science & technology. Their website has a ton of books for girls about women role models, and they regularly post an entry about a particular woman on their FB page. That might be a good starting source for Mental Floss to do a series on women scientists and inventors. The new Cosmos series w/ Neil DeGrasse Tyson also features some of the contributions of women to astrophysics and other sciences. I highly recommend that series.
*swoon* Hedy Lamarr is my all time historical crush.
This was such a great episode! Emily is so fun.
I love Emily. Thank God for this!
isn't pikachu based off of a pika
She's a lot prettier than that John Green bloke!
I love that Emily hosted Mental Floss today!
Love the Chicago Field Museum! Thanks !
Pika = Pikachu
On that same note Remora = Remoraid the pokemon that attaches to Mantine.
Dugong= Dewgong
The Evil Taco o yeah
seel=seal
Mankey=monkey
+Geenee M, Pikachu is not based on a Pika. It is a mouse, its name comes from "pika-pika" the japanese word for sparkling or sparks, and "chu" the japanese slang for mouse. So yeah, the more you know....
Rhinogradentian Thanks for the info. Now I know more.
I'd ask her out. Just saying. There's something about an intelligent woman who knows a lot about really weird things that's attention-grabbing.
Honestly I just think their cadence is infectious. If I watch too many of there videos in one day I end up talking like Hank all week.
I really loved this episode.
This was such a good episode!
This really was awesome!
Glad the Bower Bird made the list! It's one of my faves!
That giant spider legit scared the ever loving crap out of me
If EVER you get even close to a chance to see the Field Museum and Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago then make it a MUST DO event. I remember things I saw 60 years ago that are STILL there today.
I didn't expect to see Emily on here, but it was a nice surprise! All of those animals were really interesting and I hadn't heard about most of them, so thanks for informing me! :)
Emily is awesome! Love to see her on scishow and now on mental floss! :)
I think it's awesome how John and Hank have a little "empire" going, where they're involved with different projects, but they all somehow relate and kind of overlap sometimes. Like I wasn't surprised at all to see Emily on Mental Floss. And I'm not surprised when I see her on SciShow. It's like a big family where relatives go to visit each other's shows every once in a while and no one thinks anything of it.
Emily Graslie and John Green are my favorites!!!! Also, here's my question, is your dominant hand (left or right) biological? Or is it a trait you subconsciously choose?
Its nice to have an expert for this topic :)
A lot of these are very weird animals...so weird.
Also excellent job Emily, you were amazing :)
Shoebill: I think we found the crocaduck!
You work at the Chicago Field Museum!!?!?!? I used to got there all the time as a kid! I love that place.
Emily so rocks! I LOVE her humour!
I am in love with Emily and her personality. Awesome.
THIS VIDEO IS A COMBINATION OF ALL THE MOST LOVELY THINGS!
Wow...I think I'm in love with Emily.
Emily is so awesome, I loved this! Gonna have to start watching brain scoop...
Yes! I love Emily!
I am still freaking out about the fact that Emily Graslie was on Mental Floss. I can't even.
You're wonderfully funny and nerdy, Emily. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Emily!
i really enjoyed this episode, she's fun :D
i adore Emily. So geeky and funny. But a lot of these animals scared the crap out of me. *shivers*
The world needs more Emily Graslie's. Such a cool chick.
I like Emily. She's got a great comedic delivery. Great episode! More animal related things please!
Emily ROCKS!!!!
Great vid! :)
love that show
I love the Field Museum, I've gone there a couple of times when I've visited my relatives in Chicago.
Awesome presentation, really well done, keep up the great work
I knew about the remora because of The Weekenders...Thanks Tish!
Great show! Brain Scoop here I come.
I live knowing what the next episode is. Gives me something to look forward to. :)
I like the occasional guest hosts to one of my favorite video channels!
I think Dugongs are adorable!
That comment about the shoebill selling your babies....I can't stop laughing.
I was at the field in late august after having an ornithology class in college and that shoebill fascinated me!
Oh when I saw the title last week I was hoping it would be Emily! YAY! :D
Emily rocks! And this video is going to give me nightmares. Thanks.
Okay, I am in love! Emily is awesome!!!
Hey cool, my favorite local museum. Didn't know you guys had a Chicago base.
I'm glad I read the comments first. I was onguard the whole video. Thanks again :]
VISCACHA!! I visited Peru earlier this year and there was a family of them climbing around the ruins of Machu Picchu.
I would argue that Emily falls under the super-order adorable as well.
So cute & informative.
I get so exited when Chicago is mentioned on tv shows and series i watch (im from chicago)
Well that was confusing!!! This was under my BrainScoop subscription and I thought I had clicked on that!
Anyone else pleasantly surprised when they saw that Emily was doing this episode?
Every week, as a joke, I have purposefully disabled 3D (instead of leaving it at the default setting of "no preference")...mainly because I thought it was funny that on mobile it showed up as "3D"...a small amusement, but I'll take what I can get. Are you telling me that you're unable to watch the videos when it shows up as "3D"? If so...sorry!! -mark
Actually, I'm quite glad the Vlogbrothers have an empire in UA-cam rather than some others who may not use their powers for good.
Really well done Emily
Emily, you are awesome.
I paused my screen at the Hero Shrew, and my sister walked in to read it as "Harro, Shrew." My body convulsed into laughter for about 5 minutes.
"why what a long middle finger you have uncle eye-eye"
"all the better to flip you off my dear"
You go, girl!
"You cussing with me?" was my first thought when you brought up the Cuscus.
i was hoping to see the searabbit in this. it's a native only to coney island, at least that's how much my school project group found. it is almost extinct, with i think one or two belonging to a taxidermist, not sure if any are around after sandy hit, but basically it's a rabbit that lives in the water. it was hunted because of it's tasty meat by the dutch settlers so that's why it's nearly extinct, but can also be considered extinct. a little trivia, coney island was named coney (dutch for rabbit) because of the amount of these rabbits that resided there. you should look it up, it's looks so cute!
Love your work Emily. And if I can make my point known cryptically, I would like to quote Charles Coleb Corlton. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".
I just met you and this is crazy but omg! I love you!!
