He's put so much thought into the weapons of the game and the synergies you can pull off with the variety of guns although being a smaller arsenal compared to games it's compared with "DOOM Eternal" I'd say Ultrakill handles its weapons great as the crazy shit you can do with a single gun is just mindbogglingly creative. He adds goofy little easter eggs into his game like paying one of the bosses a coin to let you through, sacrificing a hamster to a "demon" that crashes your game, or just putting a head on a headless skeleton and calling him Hank. Plus his interactions with his audience or spheres outside the game is pretty neat. Notable moments are when he explained why he made Ultrakills weapons the way they are after a certain Mayonnaise DOOM Enthusiast wrote one of the most horrendous reviews ever conceived, and when Hakita responded to someone posting about "Pirating ULTRAKILL" and Hakita just dropping one of the hardest lines of the century.
2 indie game developers that I absolutely love are Dan Salvato who created Doki Doki Literature Club and Ben Esposito who created Tattletail, Neon White, Donut County and What Remains of Edith Flinch. Both developers created games and when they got insanely popular (DDLC and Tattletail) both didn't milk them. Dan made some merch and a new version of DDLC with new side stories and console ports and Ben made free DLC for Tattletail and that was it. I love it when game developers as soon as one of their games go viral, they don't exploit it and instead make the game better for the fans because it shows that these people truly care about the community surrounding their work.
Technically, DDLC doesn't really have much to milk tbh. The only cool thing about the game is the 4th wall concept. But, even then, that has existed before DDLC
Best game developers imo: Robtop (The only developer of Geometry dash, does everything by himself) Re-Logic (Terraria dev team) Ninja Kiwi (Responsible for all Bloons tower defense games) Edit: Also add your favorite game developers/teams in the replies too
2:01 fun fact: this guy voted against Edmund mcmillen (creator of meat boy series and binding of Isaac) in the competition, and later, Edmund would add the character “Judas” (inspired by the evil guy from the bible) to the binding of Isaac, wearing a red fez, which some people think could potentially be his way of making fun of him. I would say another most loved game developer (more like game development team) is Re-Logic, the creators of Terraria. Terraria is one of my most favorite games of all time, learning about it ever since I was a little kid and playing it on Xbox 360. They listen to the community, adding content the fans ask for and kept polishing and updating the game to make it an amazing survival RPG.
@@Twistedcraptain Essentially to my understanding, it was supposed to be like Terraria but more so in space with many different planets, randomly generated monsters and creatures, unique races and dungeons, villages, and many bosses. There wasn't any real story, you just crash land on a planet and go about doing whatever you wanted, there were mysteries and strange occurences, but you never really found anything besides clues. It was theoretically infinite. Then the full game came out and took majority of everything out back to be murdered, instilling a singular bog standard story you have to follow with getting these bunch of macguffins before an evil cult does and like you avenge humanity after an evil squid monster just killed all of them earlier that week. All of the bosses were gone except like one in a random side quest, basic dungeons, basic towns, and generally a major downgrade for making a plain "stop the bad guys" sorta deal. You could do whatever you wanted before, but now, you get told to do everything with that Terraria stuff barely mattering anymore.
Phil Fish was funny since his game isn’t talked about anymore and he hasn’t made anything afterwards. Bro literally caught lightning in a bottle and hasn’t and will never catch it again.

So you've mentioned Toby Fox, eh...? If you ever make a sequel, you should absolutely look into "Jun'ya Ōta" aka. "ZUN" aka. sole creator behind Touhou Project game series - rather big inspiration for Undertale. 19 games, some 6-7 official spin-offs, close to 10 official mangas by now... and countless fanworks that exist thanks to the fact, that ZUN's copyright policies boild down to "don't repost my games", "don't show endings to my games", "mention characters are from me" and "if you want to monetize your fangame, ask me first (and maybe buy me a beer)". You can do pretty much anything as long as you credit the creator and this created community so deep and wide, that it's close to a miracle.
Careful with that suggestion. You'll drop someone into a massive rabbit hole filled with a truly insane level of fan works and spinoffs, third party merchandise, memes, lore, and the like. Diving headfirst into Touhou is not for the faint of heart, or the faint of butt.
Oh yes how could i forget the dev of the pilgrims progress who has nothing but love for his community that somehow attracts more porn artists than zootopia ever did. And they really tried to cancel him for donating money-
@@ScribbledJel From what I recall, he donated to politicians that are very anti-LGBT and right leaning. His fanbase has quite a bit of LGBT and are younger, left-leaning.

The situation with Notch is interesting. I think back in 2017 he was at the peak of his depression, at that point being the definition of "Money doesn't buy happiness." In the years since, he's made more of a comeback, getting reinvolved with the community, and now people are excited about an upcoming game he's working on.

Just another fun fact about Toby Fox (For anyone who didn’t know) Toby worked on the soundtrack of Pokémon scarlet and violet. As a fan of both series, I am just so happy that he worked on some of my favourite songs in the entire series, and genuinely give them the time. You don’t even have to buy Pokémon, just listen to his songs. He made a surreal game into a surreal experience.
the craziest part about toby's contribution to pokemon is that one of the battle themes is a remix of a homestuck shitpost song he made in 2013 about the main character getting pregnant
He also produced the enitre soundtrack for another game that gamefreak made (the game flopped tho) and he has composed music for multiple vtubers (2 songs for houshou marine, 1 song for amane kanata, both of hololive)
The creators of Hollow Knight and Cuphead are both amazing groups aswell, they spent hours and hours making their games and listen to their communities. (Hollow knight also released multiple DLC’s for free)
I feel we should also shout out Scott Cawthon, the creator of the FNaF franchise. He's got a lot of similar qualities to Toby Fox when it comes to how he treats his community and fans.
No. Scott made massive donations to Conservative projects that actively hurt his community, the majority of the FNaF community are Queer or Non-white, and Scott gave money to Conservative politicians who have tried to make life worse for both groups.
As a sensitive guy myself, I can understand Phil's grief and stress but where I lose my sympathy is that dude will not shut up. Like bro, game development is not a "safe space" sort of job, it's an entertainment business, people could give less of a toss what you're going through. You'd think after years he'd understand that logic already.
there's actually a lot more behind him cancelling the game, and it has to do with money laundering and fraud. Look it up, should be some videos on youtube about it.
Somebody HAS to mention Edmund Mcmillen. Super Meat Boy did huge things for the 2D Platformer genre and The Binding Of Isaac did huge things for the Roguelike genre. Once there was a huge, very well made mod for one of his games (binding of isaac) so he basically hired the dev team behind that mod to make it into an official DLC that also included HEAPS of new content where they just let the team run wild.
My favorite indie dev has to be Kay Yu (Holo Cure). Bro made a well made Vampire Survivors clone that, imo, surpasses the original game it was based on. And bro made it free for everyone. There's even an inside joke with the fans of Kay Yu that they want to give him money for a job well done, but he himseld doesn't want any.
i’d say he’s loved but not the most loved if loved is measured with numbers. he works for the fans and with the fans, he’s nit the game dev everybody follows but the game dev with the most to give.
Eric Barone is amazing. The latest major Stardew update (1.6) started out as a “small modding update”; let’s pause there and consider the fact the base of this update was to make creating mods for Stardew easier. The update that started out small became huge and added content that expanded late game play.
I think Edmund mcmillan is one of the best indie game developer. He created so many amazing games like the binding of isaac, suped meat boy (only the first one), the end is nigh and the legend of bumbo.
He also spread the misconception that The Lead designer of PvZ was fired from Popcap/EA because he didn't want microtransactions in PvZ2, when in reality he just wasn't fond of mobile game development
A few other big game developers are Robtop, the creator of Geometry Dash, and Maddy Thorson, the creator of Celeste, which is my favourite game of all time

That is the most insane thing to me about this whole interaction. None of them for a SECOND considered telling Phil to stand down and correct himself for being a massive asshole.
I feel like you should've mentioned Team Cherry for the good devs. They're a 3 people indie studio wjo made Hollow Knight (AKA one of the most beloved games ever) and they even went as far as to impliment stuff that their kickstarter campaign didn't reach AS WELL as adding 4 free content updates/DLCs, all of which were amazing. The best part is that the game only costs 15 euros/dollars. They have also listened to their fan ideas way more than the average devs AND are making a sequel for over 6 years now (AKA SilkSong, which is, I believe the most wishlisted game on steam). Also Hollow Knight merch is amazing.
fans are not entitled to a person's time. yes they can say nice things to to them and comment nice stuff and befriend them (as good as comment section fans get) but they are not entitled to their time. stop harrasing them and going after them, a person is not forced to reply to you. devs take time. wait like a good boy and let them do their thing. they will come when they come
Eric Barone is genuinely a game creator that I actually genuinely like. He is one of the rare cases of a game creator that doesn’t just care about his fans, he respects the MOD community. Which is another reason why he is so well loved by the SV community. Especially since during one of the game updates, he accidentally made a code that broke all of the MODs for the game. When he found out, he quickly redid the code, told the fans that he was sorry, and explained that he had only just found out about the MOD breaking update. If I remember correctly he rolled that update out within a day or two. Another thing about him and the relationship he has with the MOD community is that he actually uses some. He has commented on Twitter that his two favorites are Stardew Valley Expanded, which is an in depth MOD that adds a few more bachelors and bachelorettes, quests, items, more dialogue, etc. and the CBJ MOD which is hilarious since that particular MOD not only allows you to acquire items earlier in the game, there are many aspects that are just straight cheats. Stardew Valley is also one of the only games that I am aware of that reminds on multiple Top 20 downloaded games even to this day. Note: Yes, I’m a major fan. I own it on my laptop, my Switch, and my iPad (the iPad version is the only “free” one that I own 😂)
one of my favorite indie devs is robtop, the creator of geometry dash. he always interacts with the community hes built up and sometimes posts memes on twitter and all that about his work.
i appreciate how well paced the video and its sections are. Instead of drawing it out for view time you made sure the parts were as long as they needed to be
Not really a popular studio so don't know if it should go here, but Pigeon Games is really nice too. They really made this mobile rhythm game called Phigros, made it completely absolutely free, and kept it free forever, still making updates and collaborating with other rhythm games and artists too. And only recently they made another game that they work on in parallel called Rizline, also a huge mobile rhythm game, and one of its purposes is being paid so people can provide financial support to Pigeon Games. But guess what, Rizline only costs 1 dollar, that's it. No matter how much they need financial support, they still prefer to make their games as accessible as possible
I've recently played through all chapters of Phigros. Holy shit those anomaly animations. Although I will say that the story is eh (mostly because some of the lore is still untranslated and the rest is in poems or now-inaccessible sites), Phigros is an amazing game gameplay-wise for a rhythm game. Go check it out.
I wanna shout out my fav dev rn Hammish Dunn, dude is super transparent with the entire Sprocket community about how long updates could take, if an update takes longer than they anticipated he tells us why and holds himself accountable and gives us a new timeline and each update is such an improvement over the last.
No Scott Cawthon and Dan Salvato in most loved is crazy work both go without saying but Scott created the biggest indie horror franchise ever and Dan created a cult classic game that traumatized an entire generation that was at one time the best rated game ever on steam and is the best selling Visual Novel ever.
He didn’t give up, he never tried in the first place. Dude wants to be a streamer but is in denial and needs the volunteer money so he half asses the “game.”
Another beloved indie game studio is Ghost Ship Games since they never charge for additional content or a season pass, the only thing they charge for is cosmetic DLC which everyone happily buys to support them
My favourite indie developers are Supergiant Games, their games are just so good and they started as like 5 people in someone's living room and their sound designer/composer in a closet. Wait sorry the closet was the upgrade I think he started in his room actually and blocked off the sound with bedsheets. It is a bigger team now but still small, Hades 2 is still in early access and it contains more content than Hades the full game. I bought Pyre during the summer sale and I own both Hades games and I am just obsessed with the way they tell stories and they're very genuine people. Also they have this dude running around with the official title of creative director basically he comes up with the story ideas, he made an entire language for Pyre because if the voice acting is in another language no one can really tell if it was bad. I think the team did the voice acting for Pyre including some friends and family and the only fully voiced character in English is done by Logan Cunningham that does all their narrators. Literally they have a saying for hiring voice actors, the first thing they ask themselves is: "can Logan do it?"
A couple of honorable mentions in the good category: Mike Bithell has made some really awesome games and he is always interesting to listen to. He has given a couple of keynotes at developer conferences and he had a podcast at one point with his business partner. And that gave a really awesome insight into the thoughts that goes into developing games. And Jeff Vogel from Spiderweb Software is the most awesome grumpy old dad in the industry. He has also given a few talks and is very willing to share his views on how to do game dev as a sustainable business. His games are somewhat old school. But they do have a lot of charm especially in the writing. I'd say the Geneforge games are probably the most interesting ones due to some very innovative mechanics. All of them are old school CRPGs in the vein of the Ultima games.
Okay I'm still watching the video as this is the first one of yours recommended to me. And good sir, so far I have to say: 1. Editing is on point! Well put together no random cuts (yet) and overall just well done 2. Audio is also spot on, doesn't feel to bassy or like I'm going to go deaf from you speaking into the mic. 3. Facts not fiction. So far into the video everything I've watched has been very factual and even taught me something (like what's happened with Dani that I had no idea). 4. Holy crap you are handsome like dude were you a model or something in a past life cause DAMNNNNNN Overall this is fantastic and will defs be subbing with the bell on for more.
I cant be upset at Notch. He's experienced one of the worst things someone of his money can experience (imo). Isolation from the people you were previously close to. He used to be able to relate to those who constantly struggled but he couldnt anymore. His past friends and him drifted apart and those that surrounded him had malicious intent due to his money. He didn't start a bad person(he was actually pretty inclusive) he was molded into one and that can happen to all game devs that get big. Its depressingly common. I hope I got my point across well, great video!
real, people dont know how much the media and the world around you affects the way you think and act..... i mean compare the average child raised in a good family to a child raised in an abusive family. which one is more violent/depressed/antisocial? Monsoon from Metal Gear Rising made an extremely good argument about human emotions and beliefs, and that is why he is one of if not my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE video game character of all time
The scary thing is, the bigger and more isolated that these guys get, the more likely bad people will be able to fill their head with or reinforce propaganda. Notch got weird by speaking up about trans people at one point, but he never got to, say, JKRowling's insane current state. He certainly could have made it there though, if more people cared to prey on him and he cared to continue speaking out for attention. I don't think I've heard anything from him in at least half a decade.

An indie studio I'd add to this list is Ghost Ship Games (the devs behind Deep Rock Galactic). They've always been transparent with their community, releasing free updates with lots of content, and the only thing they charge extra for are the small handful of optional cosmetic packs they've added over the years. Even two of said packs (The Supporter I and II packs), the funds generated from those, it goes directly back into the game, funding even more future content.
8:16 I don’t think people realize how unbelievably difficult No Man’s Sky was to think about it 18 *QUINTILIAN* unique solar systems every single aspect is a roll of the dice for whatever you might get it still continues to be my favorite game. Period
Out of the five "most hated" I would say Notch shouldn't be on this list, for two key reasons. 1, he made Minecraft, bestselling of all time and played by millions to this day who love it. 2, only really just said crazy things on twitter after becoming not very significant and didn't scam anyone or pull a MCUA-camr moment. One other less significant reason would be that a decent amount of people, including me, would rather Notch have not sold Minecraft off to Microsoft given the current state of the game on consoles and the mod-unfriendly nature of Bedrock edition.
Just want to add that I wrote this while incredibly tired, but also that Bedrock is very buggy, as I just played it with a few of my friends earlier and kept taking fall damage randomly with nothing around nor actually falling, despite me being host. Mobs also just didn’t spawn around me either.
@@LM-nb7rj I know, and unlike Fez guy he didn’t cancel a game numerous people were excited for after being a douche, as he no longer was involved in the development of Minecraft at that point and not that many people were paying attention to him at that point anyway

But, even then, that has existed before DDLC
don't forget that Dan also was in the Project M (a great mod for Brawl) team
Yeah. In Neon White, Violet's gift is a Tattletail as a easter egg
I forgot he also worked on Project M
Dan also made maps in Mario Maker, for some reason.
If I could’ve said anything to Dani, I would’ve simply said “take your time. Being a 1-man dev team is always difficult.”

Not really a popular studio so don't know if it should go here, but Pigeon Games is really nice too. They really made this mobile rhythm game called Phigros, made it completely absolutely free, and kept it free forever, still making updates and collaborating with other rhythm games and artists too.
It was such a missed opportunity to not include Re-Logic in this video.

3:20 WAR THUNDER RAHHHHHHHHHA 🔫🔥🔥💥🦅🦅💥🦅🔫🔫🔫🔥🔥💥🦅🔥🦅🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Two of my favourite indie devs are melos han-tani and marina kittaka, both making up Analgesic Productions (Anodyne 1+2, Even the Ocean, Sephonie, and others). They make some really special stuff and they’re very cool and friendly with their fanbase, I wish they were more known
1:31 I'll do you one better: WHY's Dani?
Honorable Mention: Zeekers, creator of Lethal Company… I dunno he seems chill and I like his game.
Dang I just realized that we're getting gta6 before yandere simulator
Having War Thunder as your sponsor for THIS video couldn't have been an accident, bro knows what he's doing
3:13 "But do you know what's even more catastrophic than that?"
The fact that it wasn't 'a Japanese game dev', but _Makato Goto,_ a dev who has worked on games like the Final Fantasy series, the Armored Core series and AI: The Somnium Files?
"War Thunder"
oh.
okay.
I love ConcernedApe!! He is so nice while interacting with the stardew valley fans on Twitter and it's just really nice to see :)
No ZUN? Absolutely criminal.
I think Zun (Creator of Touhou) should also be on this list for most loved indie game devs, everyone loves that guy
@@DMGSL the only bad thing notch did was being an asshole on twitter
@@LM-nb7rj I know, and unlike Fez guy he didn’t cancel a game numerous people were excited for after being a douche, as he no longer was involved in the development of Minecraft at that point and not that many people were paying attention to him at that point anyway
the game would be dead lol
@@AugAug989 I’d honestly prefer that rather than what we got: Microsoft forcing micro-transactions into Bedrock and being generally of a substantially lower quality than anything on Java. The modding community is also basically the main reason Minecraft is as big as it is anyway, they would’ve kept it alive.
Another game developer you could add to list of good faith is Davey Wreden, known for Stanley parable. The guy has made two video games and both of them have been equality successful in their own regards.
He also just happens to be brothers with DougDoug.
9:56 'Near perfect reputation' oh no, you didn't find his archived mspa forum posts(his account name was Fwug Radiation), 'The Baby is You' is a terrifying thing that he unleashed upon this world(positive)
my favorite indie game devs :]

"No mans sky was the most infamous gane launch of all time"
*Sonic 06 has entered the chat*
Yeah. Not to downplay No Man Sky but it also had the benefit of being released at a point in time where releasing patches to fix bugs and such became common which is something you couldn't really say for Sonic 06.
Cyberpunk would also be up there
