I love the car chase. - How 'bout a demonstration, boy? - Certainly, sir. - What the hell is goin' on?! - Now... l know you. - Oh, no. - You're that secret agent. - That English secret agent from England. - You're chasin' somebody. - Who are you after this time, boy? - Commies? - Let's go get 'em! l'm with you all the way. - Uh-oh. l think we've got trouble. - Pull your cars over, you little brown pointy-heads! - l'm a peace officer! James? Are you still there? James! Can you hear me? James! - All right, Goodnight. Don't panic. - Who's that? - lt's, er... - lt's Headquarters. - Let me talk to 'em. - Hello. This is Sheriff JW Pepper, Louisiana State Police. - You call my wife at the Narai Hotel and tell her I'm on a mission. - I've been deputized. Right? - Right. - Which car are we all chasin', boy? - Move it! Move it! - Get that piece of junk off of the road. - They went left, boy. - Press that pedal, boy. - Where the hell have they got to? - You goofed, boy. - Nearest bridge is two miles back. - Goddamn! What the... - What's goin' on? - What the hell are you doin' now, boy? - The bridge is that way! - You're not thinkin' of...? - I sure am, boy! - Ever heard of Evil Knievel? - Wowee! - I ain't never done that before! - Neither have l, actually. - Let's go get 'em, boy! - You stay put, boy. - This is my department. - Glad to see you boys on the ball! - Sheriff JW Pepper, Louisiana State Police. - Here's my identification. - Law Enforcement Association, American Legion. - Me and my partner here; we're on a secret mission. - What the hell are you doing? - Give me my wallet back.
This is one of my favorite Bond movies and the non-verbal Roger Moore moments you spoke of are a big reason why. It's like Harpo in a Marx Brothers movie: There are so many amazing subtle things going on with his performance and you have to constantly keep your eye on him to catch all of them. Great discussion!
Golden Gun is a great film. It reignited my love for Bond when I watched it on a whim earlier this year. I have so much nostalgia for it, but I also respect how the cast and crew made the most of what they had to work with
The poster, Golden Gun, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, , Kung Fu exploitation, the music, Christopher lee, the island, Maud Adams, Britt Ekland, Nik Nak, Sherrif Pepper,Car barrel roll, car with wings, bottoms up, laser gun,i cant get enough of this movie.
Early christmas present with two of my favorite Bond youtubers. Great video. I love Ryan's channel, he is clearly a very smart guy with some heavyweight analysis in his videos. Would be killer to see a Zaritsky, Dyson, and Holt discussion someday.
Hi David and Ryan a great and interesting discussion over The Man with the Golden Gun which is getting a lot of love with the 50th Anversery great video and great safari jackets would have made Roger Moore proud
My favorite James Bond movie regardless what anyone says. It has Christopher Lee, Ian Fleming's cousin and Soon Tek Oh, a Korean actor playing an Hong Kong Intelligence agent rivaling Felix Leiter's CiA., the orchestrated James Bond theme instead of the solo guitar and Lulu's singing, and my favorite Roger Moore's tailor Cyril Castle.
Across 40 years of fandom various Bond films have held the top spot as my favorite, and for the last few years that spot’s been held by TMWTGG, for many of the reasons mentioned here.
I thought you were going to debate mano e mano but it seems you both find the film quite titillating. I concur, it hasn't lost its charm from where I'm standing
I enjoy "The Man With the Golden Gun" MORE in recent rewatches than I ever did before. Anyway, your lucky! I hope you enjoy your trip. I'd love to see Thailand up close and personal.
A big goof in that movie when Lt. Hip says they're going to "Kowloon side", when they just left there. Apparently the Bottoms Up Club was actually a real place, because it also appeared in the 1994 Cantonese movie, Chungking Express.
Proof Safari jackets aren't for everyone. TMWGG has genuinely one of...the most bombastic theme songs in the series & i love it. I've seen Lulu herself perform the title track twice.
I recently discovered the Moore films for the first time since i was a kid, and i was really surprised to learn a lot of people don't like it. I think it is pretty strong, and is no sillier or more uneven than any other Roger Moore Bond film. I love Lee, i love the humor, i think Goodnight makes for a fun, dynamic between her and Bond. Plus it has that really rich, gorgeous 70s looking cinematography, which i really am a sucker for. I even love the fun Kung Fu stuff. Its not the best of the era, but i prefer it to fan favorite The Spy Who Loved Me by a long way
Footnote: There's an odd mistake. J.W. Pepper introduces himself as "Sheriff J.W. Pepper of the Louisiana State Police." Sheriffs are local officials, not statewide. That was depicted in Live And Let Die. I have no idea how that goof occurred.
Bill, I think you and I are probably the only ones who have ever caught that! As one who is retired after 30 years from a Sheriff’s Office in the US, I pegged it many years ago! Most Sheriffs are elected officials and the office itself is older than the presidency, being established in Common Law and descended from the reeves of the shires (tax collectors) from England. All Sheriff’s deputies (like myself) are political appointees and must be re-appointed every four years. Although they don’t collect taxes now, Sheriffs enforce civil court orders and levy on defendants’ assets to satisfy judgments. No other office is empowered to do that. It’s quite difficult to imagine ANYONE voting for Sheriff Pepper!! 😂😂😂
This happens in “Lone Wolf McQuade” as well, in the opening of the film a man announces himself as Deputy Sheriff Garcia with the State Police! The film takes place in Texas and stars Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger, and partially inspired his future as Walker, Texas Ranger
The only Bond movie with American Motors Corp. supplying the main cars. In 2002, I interviewed Gerald Meyers (1928-2023). He was the CEO of American Motors at the time this movie was made. He said AMC was quite pleased with the exposure for its vehicles. At the time I interviewed him, Meyers was on the faculty of the University of Michigan business school. The story I worked on concerned the return of Ford Motor Co. to the Bond series for Die Another Day.
Love Scaramanga - he’s bond unleashed. Chip on his shoulder bigger than Bond. Yet hes somewhat short on direction and maybe a little bored. They might have been mates.
Roger Moore is great, he just got too old by the end of his run. I also give him a lot of credit cause I believe he likes the Bond character Moore than the other actors who played him
I love Mary Goodnight. I think she remains rather consistent (character wise) throughout. I don't see a major shift. She has moments of "efficiency" throughout the film and moments of flakiness throughout the film. Even in the final act, both sides of her are present. When Bond says, "I hope you can swim..." she says, "This way!" and leads him to Scaramanga's boat. Similar to the Rolls Royce scene from the first act, Bond is about to make things harder than they need to be and Goodnight quickly, efficiently solves the problem. But, yes, those moments of efficiency are flanked by moments of flakiness. That's Mary Goodnight! Love her or hate her, that's the character. I happen to love her. Anyway, I don't judge Bond girls by their IQ or by how much they "kick ass." I just want them to be fun and memorable. Goodnight is both of those. And, frankly, she looks GREAT in that bikini! (I mean, if we're allowed to point out when James Bond looks great, why not when the ladies look great?)
0:18 I'm somewhat shaken, not stirred. How you can say something like this mere days after talking with dear sweet Calvin Dyson about this movie? That is cold, man. Cold! My heart is breaking. I hope Calvin is okay.
Sorry, but Casino Royale is about as realistic as TMWTGG. Sure it was a gritty movie at certain times, but also that Bond was more humanist than before. Gritty should never be misinterpreted as 'realistic'.
Honestly my favourite part of the film is how much of a bastard Roger is - Goodnight in the wardrobe being the prime example. So terrible yet hilarious!
David, I love your channel. I love and breathe James Bond. I admire that you have so much James Bond memorablia. Quick question, do you know any tailor that can make the double breasted suits that Roger Moore wears similiar to Cyril Castle's. and I would love to get a hand on the Daniel Craig's Tom Ford 3-piece Windsor suit that he wears in Spectre. I just bought the Crockett & Jones Camberley boots and slightly disappointed because the stitches on the straps or coming off after a couple of wears, but the customer service at Crockett & Jones is excellent. Thank you.
Well, I'm not Robinson Crusoe in marking this one waaay down on my list. It just hits my "cringe" response too many times. It is totally silly how Hip keeps Bond in suspense for so long. It is totally ridiculous that MI6 would build a field HQ in an unstable wrecked ship. It makes no sense the way the whole scene at and outside the kick-boxing goes pear-shaped for the MI6 team. It cannot be explained why Sheriff Pepper on holiday in Thailand would be looking at buying a new sports car. It is a deux-et-machina supreme that Scaramanga has the one-time-use-only flying car in Bangkok when his lair is way to the north on a Chinese island - and did he get to Bangkok in his junk? So how did it get back home? Okay, I'm done. It's just a series of set pieces linked by a very shaky plot.
I've browsed car showrooms in foreign countries when I've been on holidays there. It's just something I've done to pass the time and for interest. So the scene of an American tourist in a car showroom in Thailand, didn't seem implausible to me. But yeah, the idea of an MI6 HQ on the foundered Queen Elizabeth, thet was stupid.
I can’t believe I missed this video. Probably the first bond film I ever watched and I was a bond fan eternally. What a fantastic nostalgia trip!
I love the car chase.

The two duels in the fun house are epic.

No knock on Calvin, but I like this conversation better than the one David had with him
Roger is the best Bond!

Love this collaboration with each other. This movie ranks 7 on my list of favorite bond films
I love this film David. It's my favourite. It's fun and has all the tropes that I love. Yes it's silly but that's part it's charm.
Hi David and Ryan a great and interesting discussion over The Man with the Golden Gun which is getting a lot of love with the 50th Anversery great video and great safari jackets would have made Roger Moore proud
Great channel, so positive and exciting. Yes great movie, one of my favourites too.

Need to watch it again. Got a trip planned to Thailand next year, I have to visit the island
I enjoy "The Man With the Golden Gun" MORE in recent rewatches than I ever did before.
Anyway, your lucky! I hope you enjoy your trip. I'd love to see Thailand up close and personal.
Thanks! My second time visiting, but this time I need to see the island since I will be base closeby

Despite the goof, Clifton James was actually a highly decorated WW2 vet - Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
British scriptwriters not knowing how law enforcement in the US works.
Both Mankiewicz and Maibaum were Americans -- and Mankiewicz got it correct in Live And Let Die.
Guy Hamiltons Bond movies are my favourites.

This film has a soft spot in my heart, for some reason.
Dave can't get enough MWTGG 😂 Good man 👏 👌
Nice to see you fellas together. Analyze This, Bond Experience. 👍👍
As a Brit setting part of the film in a early 1970s Hong Kong was for me a highlight of the film
both remind me of roger moore here, u guys look great. 💯. ive always loved roger Moores fashion
It was a pleasure joining you for this convo, David!
Many happy returns to THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN!
I hope we get some news next year for a new Bond movie
Me too! And I hope Bond smokes cigars as he did in Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun. :)
Love the soundtrack apart from the infamous slide whistle. Wasn't quite prepared to pay over AU$100 for the anniversary CD though 😮
This was a decent Bond flik. But the one following was the best Roger Moore Bond flik.
My favourite Bond movie! Many great outfits and „Bond is an complete asshole“ moments
Sir Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. And Sir Timothy Dalton after him. 🌟
Love Scaramanga - he’s bond unleashed. Chip on his shoulder bigger than Bond. Yet hes somewhat short on direction and maybe a little bored. They might have been mates.
Scaramanga, Scaramanga, will you do the fandango?
Roger Moore is great, he just got too old by the end of his run. I also give him a lot of credit cause I believe he likes the Bond character Moore than the other actors who played him
This one doesn't rank very high for me but I do admit its fun Bond and very re-watchable.
Worked with Clifton James. Nice guy.

James bond movies are the best
Sorry, but Casino Royale is about as realistic as TMWTGG. Sure it was a gritty movie at certain times, but also that Bond was more humanist than before.
Gritty should never be misinterpreted as 'realistic'.
Here is an interesting fact, the film has the lowest body count in the bond film series. bond has 1 kill, and there are 5 other kills in the movie.
Honestly my favourite part of the film is how much of a bastard Roger is - Goodnight in the wardrobe being the prime example. So terrible yet hilarious!
There is definitely a humor to Roger's a**hole performance. And it's not just with the ladies. He's that way with Q and everyone else too.
David, I love your channel. I love and breathe James Bond. I admire that you have so much James Bond memorablia. My favorite Moore’s James Bond Movie and top5 of all time
You have good taste.
It was the worst Bond film at the time of release, but it is far better than many of the films that came later on.
I'm missing Calvin.........😢
He did his discussion with Calvin on Calvin's channel. It's a good one!

I thought this was one of the worst of all time
I’m not a fan of any of the Moore films
It's a very poor Bond film. And I've seen it dozens of times. Says a lot 😂
