Neil Breen's Green Screen

- There's only one Neil Breen.
We can learn a lot from independent filmmakers because they show us what we can do without money. So I wanted to study green screens, but not how to make the effect look flawless; instead I'm looking at perspective.

It's called a breen screen. Get it right.
This is perhaps the most seriously someone will take neil breen for a long time
Comparing Stanley Kubrick and Neil Breen is a waste of time. One makes master pieces that challenge and subvert your expectations and the other made 2001 a space odyssey.
Jacob Haight Ba dumm tsssss.
Perfect subversion my friend.
Neil Breen, Shia Labeouff, Kubrik and The Office all in one video, it shouldnt work but it does, congrats.
Finally a video about our Lord
“The room actually gets this right”
I never thought I’d hear that
The Room is not badly shot, as there was a professional film crew involved for the most part of it. Its problems are elsewhere. Compared to Bi(r)demic The Room is Citizen Kane, if we talk about camera work, effects etc. Then again, compared to Birdemic anything could be Citizen Kane (except perhaps - The Amazing Bulk)
I didn't even know that the rooftop scenes were shot on green screen the first time I saw The Room. It's pulled off pretty well for the time.
Neil Breen and Stanley Kubrick mentioned in the same video.
Finally!
haha
Kubrick should be honored
Honestly is it weird it makes me happy that Neil Breen is in a film analysis video that doesn’t technically shit on him? Like it’s weird, I want him to succeed in some way. Like he may never make a conventionally good movie but I admire his work ethic and commitment to the craft. He seems cool and isn’t like Derek Savage or other film makers who fight back against their reputation, he just shrugs and keeps making movies which makes me think of anything he’s doing it for the love of it and that’s fucking great if you ask me.
Well, from RLM's reviews of Neil Breen's movies, I always get a comedic aspect to the review about how bad the movies are. Yet, there are a few kernels of actual film-making knowledge that they share from time to time as well, so it is more than comedic at some points.
I wouldn't say his stuff is a amazing or that I think he'll have a breakout hit or anything, but the reason I'll say I'm glad to see an actual analysis of his work is so that other people can learn from what not to do and take some tips from it. Even if they aren't film makers or film students or anything, just getting the general knowledge out there is a good thing, I believe.

Actually this is a false claim by Neil Breen, he’s actually a real-estate agent
Also his real name is Cornelius
Have you never heard of people shortening their names?
@EliT nothing so exciting, simply a reference to The Witcher 2
He's a licensed architect, you can find his membership info in American Institute of Architects brochures.
Holy shit, I've learned more about perspective here than I did in art school.
I'm so glad you gave _I Am Here....Now_ the correct number of periods when crediting it. It's not the same without the 4th dot.
There's another aspect of Neil Breen's green screen that deserves mention, and that's his lighting - or lack thereof. He doesn't bother matching the lighting on his actors to that of the plate, so they stick out even worse. The Washington DC plate at the end of Fateful Findings is brightly lit from the side, with blue fill light throughout. The actors are all lit from the front with colorless lights. He also flips the plate left to right in some shots, so the direction of the key light flops back and forth.
It's a mess.
I always knew there was something missing from UA-cam. I didn't know what it was, it compelled me to create videos to try to fill the niche, but now with a great analysis of the best independent filmmaker I think the search is over. Thanks for completing UA-cam
This is magnificent. I thought it would just be a video essay parody, but it's actually insightful, great job
Neal Breen's works are a deep dive are an exact description of what the autistic mind makes of the world.
Everything he omits, adds in and manufactures is how his level of autistic sees and replicates the world.
It's an amazing case study for anyone willing to do the work to write a white paper.
A couple of dudes who live in Milwaukee may want to hang out with you. Never thought I'd hear anyone mention Neal Breen other than those guys.
Jokes aside, can't believe it took me so long to discover this channel. You know you are gonna love a guy when you look at his channel like list and it matches yours almost exactly.
Great editing, great points, you definitely know what you are talking about. Keep it up man, love the channel.
"What separates Neil Breen from Stankey Kubrick is..-"
Holy shit xD
You have truly breen blessed by his films.
That's an interesting angle to look from at Neil's movies. Thank you!
So funny i found this in my thread. I was an extra in his movie 'Fateful Findings'. I made $175 in 2 days out in the Nevada desert heat! Neil is a character i tell you! I was so embarrassed when i finally watched the movie i was in (even though you can't even see me because his cuts were so fast and he didn't even use a piece i was in huhu). It was SOOO bad my stomach felt weird when i watch it back for the first time. It's funny, the amount of seriousness he has when filming down to every detail and micro management, DOES NOT SHOW IN THE FINAL PRODUCT! His movies are AWFULL!!!
I was so glad to get a start in anything having to do with film, and it had to be this! I really don't like to tear him down, but, OMG, have you seen his stuff? I mean, the edits!? I swear it looks like a 5th grader was given an extra credit assignment and this is how it ended up. He had a Ferrari like the one in Magnum P.I. at the time. I don't get that he has a following. Well, i guess William Hung has one too. Sorry Neil.
I think that Max Landis put it best that, if given millions of dollars, _Birdemic_ and _The Room_ would look completely different... but no amount of budget could ever change how Breen's micromanaging looks. Despite his many other faults, Max Landis is an expert on having a consistent level of quality. Were you one of the black-hooded guys with the book out in the desert? If so, then... what? Just what even? I can imagine you being given instructions to stumble backwards out of frame, brushing away the footprints to sell that you're ethereal beings.
One of my favorite details is how Drunk Jim clearly wasn't allowed to touch the Ferrari that he's "working" on (stolen with a flip-phone in _Double Down_ iirc), which is carefully parked on top of sheet plastic to keep fake blood off of the floor, but with the garage door slammed against the fender. If it makes you feel better, I read a comment from someone who worked tech support at Breen's day job and they were in physical pain from watching the hacking montages (saying that they were constantly avoiding calls from him to deal with malware). Also, you probably didn't have to kiss him, snuggle in front of a wall of garbage bags, or see his bait & tackle.
Granted, the craft services credit was fake, so that must have been awful. Especially, if lunch was a pot of collard breens.
For me, the appeal is the sincerity of his, uh, let's call it artistic vision. You could see the dollar signs flash in William Hung's eyes, and trying to sound even worse, when that record deal came his way. However, Breen just makes the same movie over and over again, in different genres, and sees the notoriety as a happy accident to help spread his message. Whatever that is.
@@futonrevolution7671 Yes i was one of the black hooded 'people' in the desert for a half of a second. I was also one of the crew from the ambulance . I think you can see my wrist for 1/10 of a second. My foot was seen walking off of the curb close to the beginning.
Heeeey, wait a minute, humble bragger. Had to revisit your work, and those are the same shoes, as the EMT who gently rests the phone on his chest, like a bouquet of flowers. I don't know, for sure, if handling props upgrades an extra to a full actor, but I'm going to pretend that it does, and you were robbed of a demo reel highlight. As the first one to step off of the curb, your rolled-up cuffs are a clear and obvious metaphor (in Breen's mind) to, uh, something? The other EMT with their feet hidden represent... okay, I can do this... they represent, when the protagonist looks back, at the darkest moment of his life, to see only one set of footprints.
@@futonrevolution7671 I don't remember how the scenes looked at the moment it was a long time ago. Either that or there isn't any reason for my brain to retain that amount of confused knowledge when i watched it. All i know is that i was there and i didn't get to see more than 2 seconds of any of my anatomy and was glad my face wasn't shown after watching it and wondering what it was i had just saw.
Definitely the latter. Your channel's super-adorable, by the way.
I came for the comments, I stayed for the strangely informative video. I was not disappointed.
I love how you used the Comic Sans font as a way to mimic Breen's "creative process".
this is the best anyone has ever explained the basics of greenscreen compositing ive seen, thanks for this
I've seen a lot of BreenTube and just wanted to say great job on picking a unique angle to contribute.
Very well done, cap'n.
I was a little worried at the start of that video but by the end, I saw where you were going. A great lesson on perspective and compositing (something I see a lot of mistakes being made with, all the time. It's not easy to eyeball it, which most FX artists try to.) and having a "can-do" attitude towards your work.
Neil Breen aside, this is a very well made refresher on perspective with straight forward, interesting examples. This has been helpful to me as an illustrator... nice work!
Who would have thought Neil Breen would provide for such a great learning experience!
I must suddenly watch every film this master of cinema, gifts the world.
Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
Your videos are always so interesting! Thank you for covering the legend himself.
Man oh man, this is just what I needed to improve my own green screen footage. THANK YOU so much!
No laptops were hurt during this recording.
Thanks for using Freesound Music!
My poor unsuspecting puritan eyes! I saw a woman, whom I wasn't married to, as she was when she doesn't have clothes on! Now, because of you, I'll never be allowed in heaven! Thanks Jesse, you've damned me to eternal torment in a fiery abyss. Though, upon consideration, this does free me up to enjoy my life a lot more... I now rescind my previous sarcasm. Thanks Jesse!
You've given us another great video! I like the work you did with graphics and they really taught me a lot about perspective and the use of green screens, with just the right touch of humor ;)
I had honestly never heard of Neil Breen, but I love The Prestige reference and it does make you wonder...Thanks and keep them coming!
Comparing Kubrick to Breen is really cruel. I love it!
Breen screen.
Do you mean Breen Screen .
Shboom shboom
Life could be a Breen sweetheart
Send Neil This Video!
What a mean green screen Breen machine
neil green's breen screen
The Green screen in Room is surprisingly great
That's a great video to watch at 4AM
One thing is impossible: Neil Breen making a competent movie
Those aren't green screens, those are breen screens.
That greyed out version of Neil Breen actually makes him look a lot younger, btw. It's kinda unnerving.
Your channel is so amazing and your so talented, You deserve way more support and subscribers!
I expected a video about solely neil and got a really good informational video on shot types and compositing footage thanks
I gotta know if Neil has seen this video
Neil Breen’s Breen Breen
Nice positive message at the end:)
that clip from The Prestige is perfect
I’ve learned from this but still can’t fully wrap my head around it. I’ll try when I’m less tired.
And oh my god when Breen uses two horizon lines it’s weirdly almost like one of those shots where you’re looking at a young/old woman and your mind flips between the two or did I just stare too long? Or have I watched too much Neil Breen? Help. :/
Thanks for the informative video. I’ll never need any of it but thanks.
I was saying he’s pure satire but yeah putting it that way I think Breen and Wiseau are performance artists and the scene you chose (from a favorite movie of mine) to explain this was perfect.
Your channel is amazing
This is the video I didn't know I needed
I would love for Tommy Wiseau and Neil Breen to make a movie together.
Great video, almost made me pee my pants laughing.
Would not work, too much ego
I never noticed Shia had a ponytail over his shoulder before this video :0
Nobody could possibly outdo Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room” for sheer entertainment value!
Neil Breen “Hold my Chardonnay”.
Great
the part between 10:00 and 10:05 was a nice touch with the scene selection haha
OH SHIT I LOVE NEIL BREEN THANK YOU
And the Oscar goes to...
Neil Breen for Twisted Pair 👍🏻
I think you meant, "This is Neil Breen, he is God"
1:16 Yikes indeed. Completely forgot about that
Neil Breen is a perfect human bean.
Very informative and entertaining!
There is no god but god, and his name is Breen (peace be upon his name).
Wow. That’s a lot of words; one after the other...
Shia LaBeouf didn't release a motivational video. That video was made by the students of Central Saint Martins art school in London and is a part of the students' final projects.
This guy? Oh no, oh man.
Great video, 3:12 was definitely the highlight for me.
This was a quality youtube video. Good work yo.
Catering: Neil Breen.
Oh god that green screen in the office nearly gave me cancer
Sorry, nitpick: 3:46 - no its not another horizon line, its one point. No normal building-lines will converge to any other point on this "another horizon"
#EyesOnBreen
Jesse, it's not April 1 yet...
The Oscars is beneath this real human breen.
We should all coin the term Neil Breen screen
The Breen screen
3:12 I see London I see France I see lady with no pants
You son of a bitch this is brilliant
Hollywood: we’re not going to put Shia LaBeouf into anymore movies.
Internet: …so you want us to?
i LIKE HIM. hE'S A GOOD ACTOR.
There seems to be a lot more you can learn from studying bad examples than good ones
The breen screen
3:13 man really just snuck this in there
This video is just a very long setup for a Shia Labeouf meme joke
nobody gonna talk about the full nude part?
Who am i?
What am i?
Who's there?!
LOL
Why am I?
You are now cured of PTSD
I thought for a sec this Neil guy was in the you know what industry and I was really worried on about what I was going to watch but no this dude just makes shit "movies"
How did you find the horizon line on some of the shots? Like the one in front of the open gate. I see the hline for the gate, but where is the other hline coming from
For that shot, like you said, the gate in the foreground leads to one horizon line. The second line comes the house, mainly those columns on the roof.
It's an image that continues to baffle me. He looks so tall compared to the house that he would have to duck to get into the front door. (It's possible the house is below ground level but...it doesn't look like it.)
The color of the foreground plants doesn't match the background plants. That big two-pronged tree on the lawn looks like it's matted into the shot. The lanterns on the gate look like they were pasted in.
I guess that's the Breenius of it all.
Are you a film major?
I have a degree in Sequential Art (a fancy word for comics) but there's a lot of crossover with film. Thanks for asking!
Jesse Tribble I’m thinking about minoring in Film. Do you think it’s worth it?
@@aboxintheblack9530 If you love it, and can handle the debt ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Every parallel line will meet... Um... What?
Breen Screen

Breen Screen TM
YOU GUYS DON'T GET IT. It is a stylistic choice made by our Lord and Saviour. It's pure BREENIUS.
3:12 Do you want to get demonitized? Because *that's* how you get demonitized!
Wait.. Neil Breen is an architect?
Love your video & i just subscribed. Thanks for the tutorial. I want to be a film maker & i want to use a small budget in order to make OK movies. My favorite film maker is John Carpenter.
